Finishing an introduction…

March 19, 2012
by

Hello everyone, Conor here. This is my first blogging assignment of the semester so strap yourself in and get ready for the ride!

This week we are working on essay introductions, so I thought I’d give you some practice! Your assignment is to write the introduction to follow one of the hooks written below. I’ve given you five hooks and each one is a different kind of hook – a question, an interesting observation, a unique scenario, a famous quote, or a shocking or surprising statistic.

  1. What would you do if one morning you woke up to find you had turned into a duck?
  2. Have you noticed that the summers and winters seem to been getting longer, but the springs and falls seem to be shortening?
  3. Traveling around the world alone is not something everyone is capable of.
  4. Henry Ford, the great automobile pioneer, once wisely said “don’t find fault, find a remedy”.
  5. In 2002 Korea and Japan were both the first Asian countries to host the FIFA World Cup, and also the first countries to co-host the international event.

Remember to include the hook in your post.

About Hooks

One thing you need to know about a hook is that it is only part of an important process of attracting your readers attention and maintaining their interest in what you are writing. Think of a fishing hook; if a fish bites the hook, it doesn’t automatically end up in the boat, does it? No. You have have to carefully fight and reel the fish in, making sure that you can keep the fish latched on to the hook at all times, until you can land the fish in your boat.

Writing an essay is exactly the same. If you have a good hook, the reader can still loose interest, so you need to have a good introduction that keeps the reader interested. So remember, try to not present the reading with anything boring, or even worse anything that is so general that the reader already knows plenty about the topic and doesn’t need to read what you have to say. A great way of keeping a reader hooked is to keep them guessing what is going to happen next, and always leaving questions that the reader is looking to answer, and the answers they’re looking for can only be found in the next line you’ve written.

What would you do if one morning you woke up to find you had turned into a duck? No one can understand your feelings. Even though you try to say something to others, they would hear only the “quack-quack” sound. You are not able to communicate with anyone. That is how students who are being bullied, feel in school. They are outsiders among students. some even commit suicide due to solitude and agony they endure. Let’s find out why bullying exists, and how we can prevent school harassment.

Hi 🙂 i write only the introduction, don’t i? Okay let me start it, i’m not sure what i’m starting to write though. i will use No.2-an interesting observation hook to write my post

Have you noticed that the summers and winters seem to been getting longer, but the springs and falls seem to be shortening? Probably you have felt that the summer are getting colder and winters are getting warmer. That phenomenon is caused by Global Warming. Here are more results of Global Warming. Basically all of them caused by Global Warming are related to together but we need to look at each by each and find solutions. It can raise the problems of climate changes, ecosystem changes, and melting glacier.

I don’t think my post is good but at least I’ve tried it. So if there are any problems, could you point it out please. Thank you.

I read your postig well 🙂
BTW the first sentence is talking about the length of seasons, but second one is about the temperature. So I think it is little wired. Are the first and second sentences examples of Global Warming? If they are, you’d better use word ‘phenomena’ instead of ‘phenomenon’ and also verd should be changed. Hope this comment be good for you!

Some people said it was able to make better games than former games. But others said it had a lot of problems as hosting the Big event with two countries. Many experts conduct researches about this first and last international event so far, especially when it comes to games, use of facilities, cost, and the environment.

It is difficult to come up with or imagine the next story. By the way, I tried to write a good introduction! See you tomorrow, Conor 🙂

The countries of East Africa have many problems to cope with. They are all poor. Out of a population of 18 millions, Uganda has 1.5 million children who have been orphaned by AIDS. There have been mass killing in Rwanda’s tribal war. Yet, there countries also hold some of the world’s greatest and rarest animal populations. This means that there is a conflict over the use of the land. Do people come first, or animals?

Traveling around the world alone is not something everyone is capable of.

Considering the number of the accidents of travelers, we know there are major some reasons why it is difficult for travelers to go abroad without company.

We usually condense some reason to roughly 3 reasons: One is difference of language, two is culture acceptance problem, and three is lack of information about relevant nations.

If we regard to those factors, we can go to abroad by ourselves without troubles and even if we face some kinds of problems en route, we’ll handle it wisely if we ruminate 4 reasons.

But it is clear that going abroad alone is not easy.

As Francis Bacon said “scientia est potentia”, Knowing about the reasons of the difficulty of traveling alone cannot stress too much and it will help us solve the problems.

It’s already March, but I am still wearing a coat because of the last cold snap. A chill breeze, sometiems snow, our skin has difficulty in adjusting to new but different enviroment. You can easily find out that your skin is not good enough compared to the last year. If your skin is getting worse because of weather change, there are 3 tips that you can do. The first thing is to stay out from Sun and always beware to wear sunscreen. Another is to apply moisturizing cream and, the last thing is to keep your skin clean using soap that is perfectly suitable for you.

However there is still trouble between these two countries, Korea and Japan. Japan has not yet apologized officially about their cruel behavior during the colonial period yet and they stick their opinion that Dokdo is their own territory. If two countries hope to be real friends among the lots of the country, they would better solve the these problem as soon as possible.

Because of the success movie ‘Once’ led people to keep their eyes on his group ‘The Frames’ however what is the reason of its success even if it was not a major movie just small indi movie. The quality of its own movie and music is the key of their success. In these days markets are led by big company while small companies are keep sinking. That is why the success of this movie is surprising and showed people that if their quality is good enough they can turn consumers eyes to them and be competitive enough to big companies.

While doing this, people think themselves that they are doing good for their company.
Unfortunately, it is wrong. Blaming for faults without remedy just raises a discord in their group.

Then, how could you talk to other people? Flapping the wings or using facial expressions could be possible. These are called nonverbal communication. According to Wikipedia, it is the process of communication through sending and receiving wordless (mostly visual) messages between people. To make effective nonverbal communications, these three keys are required; posture, gesture, and facial expression.

According to the research, 60 percent of people who participated in the survey answered that winter starts on november and continues until march of next year. Also, you should not fight with other ducks unless it is reasonable. In other words, you should follow what other ducks do. Traveling around the world alone is not something everyone is capable of. This is because of the diversity of this world. Each country has their own unique culture and language. Although some countries may share similar cultures and languages, this doesn’t mean that everyone can enjoy themselves at another country where they aren’t familiar with. Once you’re out of the comfort zone, it is very easy for the person to get nervous and be afraid of the things around them. However travelling around the world takes a lot of courage as well as some knowledge for the person to adapt to the new setting in which their in. So it can be hard for some people to travel around when they aren’t good with organising routes, lack of communication skills, fear of changes due to new environment and inability to accept and understand new culture.

Besides, they tend to find only their defect, not to a solution about the situation. However, if people keep going on like this, they not only couldn’t become successful in any fields, but would get depressed easily. However, I’ve noticed a few students, mine and Todds, have not really given an thesis statement. Remember this is probably the most important aspect of introduction, especially considering your entire essay will be designed around it.

For a lengthy description on thesis statements please visit this page provided by the UNC Chapel Hill: http://writingcenter.unc.edu/resources/handouts-demos/writing-the-paper/thesis-statements

Most of cases, this suggests the importance of a positive mindset toward failures, encouraging those who have made a mistake to move on to the next step. However, occasionally there are times when a remedy won’t work or even if it works, things will never be the same as before. Thus, Ford’s spirited saying sometimes misleads people to being infinitely easygoing and thinking there will always be a remedy. So, if you want to be wise truly enough, please keep in mind that some mistakes cannot be undone, such as ruined health, thoughtlessly uttered remarks, and wasted time.

However, It seems to be the time that they have to teach their children the exact truth. It’s been a long time that springs and falls have been shortend. In addition, It appears as if springs and falls currently have only one month each. This climate change is not the problem only Korea has, but countries all over the world share, though.
