What Does Music Do To You?

April 16, 2012
by

It’s Monday…yippee…

Starting a new week early in the morning can be tough right? Especially when the exams are close and the sun is shining and the cherry blossoms are finally beginning to emerge, and dragging myself into work is not easy. It’s so frustrating, but there’s nothing I can do about it, usually because I’m too sleepy after the long weekend…

But one thing that makes me feel better, always, is when I turn on some music I like. I think it’s safe to say that music has a positive effect on everybody. Even people who don’t really listen to that much music enjoy music. Music has so many different effects on us, both good and bad – it can make us happy, angry, reminiscent, optimistic, depressed, and so many more emotions. And it does more!

Music is so diverse that it can effect us in so many ways. People are so diverse that we like to listen to music in different ways. I like to listen to music when I’m walking down the street where I can just shut off everything that is going on around me, sailing by all the usual nonsense that goes on in the street that doesn’t effect me! When I am at home I like to turn on my stereo, put a CD in (yes, I still use CDs) and turn up the volume, and then I dance around my apartment – of course I only do this when no one else is home!

Here is your assignment for the week:

Choose a song and find a link for it so that your fellow students can listen also (youtube is a good place to look as there are usually accompanying videos). Write down the name of the singer and the name of the song.

Then pick one of the tasks below:

1. How does this song make you feel and what is it about this song that makes you feel this way?

2. Where do you listen to this song the most and why do like to listen to this particular song in this particular place? Are there any other songs you like to listen to in different situations?

3. What do you imagine when you listen to this song?

4. Why do you dislike this song or kind of music?

To get you in the musical mood, I’m going to include three songs that I like.

This song is called Lonely Boy and it’s sang by the Black Keys, a band with only two members. Whenever I listen to this song, I just want to get up and go somewhere. This is the kind of music that really suits me when I’m walking into work on a Monday morning when I’m all sleepy and need some motivation. Just like the guy in the video, this is a real get up and move song. I love the wall of sound that comes throughout, and there’s so much going on with the guitars, drums, and vocals. But in the end it’s just a simple love song, which is what many of the best songs are if you ask me (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones… all their early hits were love songs).

The next song is (Night Time is) The Right Time by Ray Charles (of course). The thing that I love about soul music is the big band sound, but also the voices of the singers are so unique and enrapturing. These days so many singers seem to sound the same, but when you listen to guys like Ray Charles or (even better) Otis Redding, then you can really see that you don’t need to sound like everyone else to be a great singer, you just need to be able to sing with all your heart. I’m always listening to this kind of music – very loudly – whenever I’m home alone, maybe doing some cleaning or messing around on the computer over the weekend. It’s really hard to get work done (even write this assignment) when I turn on a song like this because all I can do is tap my foot and shake my shoulders and head to the sound of the music – but maybe I’m like this with all the music I listen to.

This song is from a band called The Stone Roses. It’s not one of their most famous songs but it’s one of my favourite, and it’s called What the World is Waiting For. When I was growing up, The Stone Roses were basically the band that got me really interested in music; before I used to listen to really bad chart music and wasn’t really impressed by what I heard. I think it’s safe to say that my world became a better place when I first heard these guys playing. Again this song is a really upbeat and positive sound that just encourages me to get up and get things done, and I can’t be anything but happy listening to it. Musically, the balance between the four members contribution just hits the perfect balance, and while this isn’t their best song by any stretch of the imagination, it’s definitely the one that I listen to the most because of the effect it has on my mood (already I’m happy writing about it). Oh, and more importantly, The Stone Roses are on a reunion tour and will be playing at the Jisan Rock Festival this summer along with another big favourite of mine, Radiohead!!!!

Have fun!

I would like to introduce ‘You & I’ sang by IU who is the most famous singer thesedays. I usually listen to this song in bus while commuting, and I set this song for an alarm. The reason I listen to this song is because it is very rhythmical and kind of dreamy especially in the introduction. If I listen it while sleeping, I always have brisk beginning of the day. It does help me getting up in the morning. Likewise, while in bus, I listen to ‘You & I’. I feel sick of riding a full jampacked bus. It really is a miserable time. However, Listening to ‘You & I’ makes me relaxed and lessens tension of morning sickness. I feel a bit calm and vigorous even those times could be horrible times. Also, I am a big fan of IU. I liked her and her music since her debut. Unlike other singers, she prefers acoustic music. Thesedays, electronic songs are pouring out, but I prefer listening to old style music.

Ah, really good! Such a soothing song for all oppas living this Daehanminguk society! They, along with the composer, put down so much money on this particular song too. Especially for the instrumental parts, all the renowned musicians were involved, such as the orchestral team Yung Strings, and Sam Lee the guitar player. That’s why the quality’s a lot higher than average songs. All those kinds components to which listeners usually don’t pay attention make a song sounds great.

While the standard is quite high, generally speaking I dislike producer driven songs like this. They lack that certain amount of ummph required to take them to the next level (and doesn’t it sound a little too much like the last song that this person released?)?

Yes, Mr. O’Reilly. Exactly, that’s the point! That’s the goal of this market. I’ll give you the interesting Korean term, “jaetang,” meaning if something had a great impact that drew awful lot of money in the past, why not give it a shot the same way again until it becomes not so effective?

      • April 21, 2012 5:43 pm

Well, to be honest, I think that it’s a big problem – whatever you want to say about the music business – because you can see it everwhere with over saturation especially in terms of restaurants (fried chicken and pizza – c’mon people only eat so much) coffee shops, mobile phone stores… Diversity encourages stronger and vibrant competition, which in turn benefits us, the consumers, we the economy, and the people who are involved are encouraged to have a better sense of purpose, rather than being just another number.

Yeah, Mr. O’Reilly. That’s exactly why I show my abhorrence to this currently music industry albeit still liking some of them. And that’s why I stopped writing songs to impress the companies, too. Ha-ha. It’s such a small, narrow-minded market.

I really like ‘You&I’ as well. IU`s acoustic music style is touching. I think IU changed her singing style little bit after her debut. But her new singing style is more attractive to me:)

This song is entitled “Why [Keep Your Head Down]” and from Dongbangki(Kor.)/東方神起(Chin.)/Tohoshinki(Jap.)’s 5th album released in January, 2011. This has been one of the songs working as the representatives figure of Korean pop and its vogue. I do not take much stock in the latest issue of “Korean Boom” or Korean Wave, though still affecting some parts of our society and other nations, because one’s favor for music is absolutely personal, and Korea is quite a small country who cannot influence a massive number of listeners worldwide like America or some western parts of Europe, and thus my assumption is only a small percentage out of people from the world are crazy about K-Pop just like the fans of Japanese animies (I know, I might be wrong though). However, I admit that K-Pop’s position in the world’s music industry has been changed considerably. A decade ago Korean pop music was much based on American pop songs, and taken as copied form. Now K-Pop has its peculiar style and fans who love it even though they cannot understand what the lyrics besides “yeah” and “baby.”
The reason why I like this particular song is that it is also composed by my idolized music producer Yoo Young-jin who is one of the current directors of SM Entertainment. Mr. Yoo has his own music crews, the Booming System, who have changed the standard of high-quality sound for K-pop in the late 90’s. Why [Keep Your Head Down] was also Mr. Yoo’s incomparable production and I could literally feel a shiver behind it. I did not focus much on the lyrics (mainly because it is dance music) or the traditional meaning of a song itself, but it was great enough to move me with its unique sound. (I like the choreography too!)

This is one funny video clip of American kids’ reactions to K-Pop.
No offense, but I totally understand their perspective of view too!

Let me add some context to this video. For some Westerners, especially music affectionados, pop music can be quite polarizing. Some will argue that music is subjective and depends on each person’s taste. Others might argue that, while some pop music is well-written and produced, most of it is manufactured – created by/for a corporation who’s interest is making more profits instead of expressing the soul and spirit of the artists. They might continue to say that like McDonalds food, it’s popular not for its quality, but for simplistic hooks, marketing, and non-music factors such as the appearance of the singers, their dancing skills and videos. However, to many people, debating the quality of music is not that important. If they like a song, they like it. If they don’t, they do not. Life goes on.
It would seem that the producer of the video above prefers kids who give exaggerated opinions because they are more interesting for TV; more interesting, more viewers, more profits. I would not take the kids reactions as a good sample of typical American kids, but a manufactured group of kids with strong opinions that create interest and sometimes controversy.

      • April 18, 2012 10:59 pm

Hmmmm that’s a nice way of describing that kind of music…

Yeah, ha-ha, I knew the reaction video was actually made by adults who wanted to get more viewers for their pages. I posted it just for fun too; but I had some experience back in the Sates that some kids would still act like that way and others not! By that time, the whole Asian pop music (meaning by the pops straight from Japan or Korea) wasn’t that prevalent either, as it is now. I never saw all (North) Americans were ego-minded patriots who only spoke English [I guess, this part wouldn’t apply to either Canadians and Irish folks since many of them are capable of speaking multiple languages] and thought their culture was the kick-ass above others. Like you mentioned, life goes on. Some folks live this way, and others live that way. But, anyway, I myself am often quite fascinated by the quality of a song, and I believe general people wouldn’t care so much about the quality as I do, but, but, but, it still affects people. Okay, this is again my case, but, out of all variety of K-Pop songs, I had specific songs I was fond of and LATER, they turned out to be the ones produced by my favorite song writer – I didn’t know the composer beforehand. Yeah, what I want to say is that all listeners might not be able to analyze songs in terms of quality and structure, but they’d still know which songs can stimulate their ears, like watching analogue TV and watching in HD quality. Again, it’s a different notion from the contents songs bear.

I think it should be noted that everyone has a different opinion and the kids in the video does not certainly mean that EVERYONE thinks the same way. People from different culture can and most likely will react different about the same thing. It’s just that in Korea, performance is considered more important than others. Additionally, we should realize the definition of K-pop, which wikipedia says it to be “a musical genre consisting of pop, dance, electropop, hip hop, rock, R&B, electronic music originating in South Korea” and some people just are not too fond of the styles of music that K-pop consists of since different people like different style of music. As much as I had fun watching this video, I think it’s a possibility some other Koreans were baffled by the kids’ reaction. I’m just trying to say that the kids in the video do not represent the majority of what kids in America would react. 🙂

Whenever I was doing my duty warrant officer come up with saying “Carry on” so when I saw first the title of this song, I was naturally interested in this song.People usually like the familiar thing.

This song makes me rise whenever I think that I want to give up something hard.
Scene of music video that one ping pong player experience painful situation but never stop overlaps my duration of imporatant exam. During the exam, My 6 comrades failed except only me. This music makes me melancholy but simultaneously galvanizes me to rise up.

The lyrics, “When your hope has been denied, I’ll walk beside you”, always gives me the courage to stand up. If I didn’t hear this music, I would not here.

I miss my comrades, my friends. Hoping they stand up again.

This music gives me one lesson: There is no loser. If you don’t give up and carry on your duty. Just Carry. It will prove your sweat.

I put up 2 version of this music. One is live version and the other thing is music video. I suggest you to watch both of them.

They create beautifully harmonizing voices and a romantic and relaxing melody.
This song isn’t well known to the public but it can help feel better.
This song is perfect for having a picnic or driving in these sunny spring days. It evokes the romance of travel. So, I am more excited and happier.
When I am depressed and feel heavy with worries, this song makes me feel cool, refreshed and better.
This song takes me to blue sea and wide green field and reminds me of last travel and beautiful memories.
When I can’t take a trip such as the exam period, I imagine that I am in a restful and beautiful place by listening to this music.
This beautiful melody like blooming flowers in spring could make you feel refreshed and happy.
Take a stroll or take a rest just listening to this fresh music!
Then, you can feel more comfortable and become lively.

I’ve always like music. I remember when I was young, we used to sit around the fire after killing a buffalo, banging sticks and rocks together to make beats, and hooting and howlering. My, how technology has changed instruments since then.
These days, I like this song…and the video is not too bad, either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrycA0S_NOI
But I wonder, shouldn’t those kids should be back home doing homework instead :). The artist’s name is Avicii, a 22 year old Swede who busted onto the electronic scene about 4 years ago and has since risen to #6 ranked DJ worldwide according to DJ Magazine. The song is called Levels, and the genre is progressive house. I like it because when I listen to it, “oh sometimes, I get a good feeling, yeah, a beautiful feeling that I never ever had before.” The breakdown has a beautiful vocal by gospel singer Etta Jame called “Something’s Got a Hold of Me”. BTW, Avicii commands $100,000 plus for a 2 hour DJ set. Not bad pocket money for a 22 year old.

I would like to introduce to you ‘somebody that I used to know’ sung by Canada band ‘Walk off the earth’.They are already famous through YouTube. But I recently got to know this group by my roommate. This band is comprised of five members. There are four men and one woman in the group. They have good voices. And they sang this song very well. But I was amazing because of their performance. I imagined how hard they played with one guitar together. This song makes me funny and happy. And I want to learn playing a guitar after listening this marvelous song. I usually listend to this song in my room. I like to introduce one of my favorite songs, which is “Live high” sang by Jason Mraz. I could not figure out fully the exact meaning of this song, but I love this song very much! (Frankly speaking, I really love all of Jason Mraz’s songs.) Whenever I listen to this song, I feel my mind becomes peaceful. With gentle the accompaniment of a his guitar and his soft voice, I feel much better in my busy life. And I got impressed with the lyrics, “Takin it easy~”. I think this means hectic people need to be calm in their busy life, just saying “Takin it easy~”.
Especially, I usually listen to this song when I study in library. In the library, sometimes, there is a time that I could not concentrate on only studying because of sleepiness, noisiness of people’s talking, or just lack of concentration. Then, I choose this song! And I also recommend this song for people who are in the situation in library.

After I heard it, I thought about what is the most important in my life. How can I estimate a year’s value. And I reflect on my attitude, the way how I live. I have to appreciate that there are many people who loves me and whom I love. I thanks to the truth that I can live with them , near them . I can walk with them. I can waich TV with them. I can laugh with them. I can share worry with them. This music give me energy.

I would like to introduce you one of the most hateful songs. This song is “Ringdingdong” sung by Shinee. As you can see and hear in the music video, There is no beautiful lyrics or poetric sentences. They just repeat same words over and over. Let me copy some of lyrics from this song.
    “Go rocka, rocka, rocka
    rocka, rocka, rock (so elastic)
    fantastic fantastic fantastic fantastic
    elastic elastic elastic elastic
Ring Ding Dong Ring Ding Dong“
I am not joking. this is actually a song. Koreans are fond of these hook songs lately. Nevertheless, I am quite concerned about this phenomenon. Back in 80s and 90s, there were such beautiful songs with authentic lyrics which made people nostalgic about something forgotten in their lives. Can you feel something while hearing “Ringdingdong”? I doubt that.

Have you ever gone fishing on a boat in rough water and the hook got stuck in your finger? That’s what I think about hooks. It frustrates me. There are so many great musical acts in the world, and especially in Korea, but so many places insist on playing the same tripe out loud and ruining my day. What bothers me more though is when I keep hearing that this kind of music, and in Korea especially (sorry guys), where it is being promoted as the greatest Korean export since Hyundai ships, when it is merely unimaginative and senseless. Well, we’ll see who’s laughing when we look back in several years and go “oh my god, did we really listen to that?” Music’s quality can really only be tested by its timelessness – if it still sounds good in twenty years, then it was good in the beginning.

I thought I’d share a few Irish songs with you (because I’m Irish and we love to sing too)

This ballad is called Scorn Not His Simplicity, and it’s sang by Luke Kelly of The Dubliners, a famous Dublin folk group (their last original member died recently). The song was written by another Irish musician called Phil Coulter, and he wrote the song about his son who was born down syndrome. The song is a deeply moving song where he calls for people to ignore the child’s obvious deformities and too love him like a person who has feelings, emotions, and especially love. This version is perhaps the most famous as Luke Kelly’s voice, which is deep and soulful, sends chills up your spine. Of course another thing that is noticeable about this video is the casual nature of the musicians who are sitting around chatting, and one member even walks and sits down with a pint of lager. This is reminiscent of a traditional Irish music session which would usually happen in a pub.

I listen to a lot of what most people would call rock music, and when people think of Irish rock they probably think of one band, U2. Well, I don’t like U2 (some of their old stuff is OK), and I wish people would listen to other Irish rock bands other than U2. A lot of people in Korea also seem to really like Glen Hansard’s work from the film Once (a film about street culture in Dublin), but I’m not a huge fan either, and please don’t mention Westlife… Maybe you’ve never heard of these people before but if you like rock, you should really like these. I’m not going to write any more about them, just let the music do the talking …. or singing…. eh…you get the idea, right?

Also, there’s a really funny video that I won’t post here as it has a lot of profanity which I think might be a little bit offensive…but if you really want to laugh and to get an inside look at Irish subculture, search youtube for Horse Outside….be warned it is for a mature and understanding and good natured audience 🙂

I love this topic. The problem is that it is too hard to pick only one song for this post.

These days, I ‘m watching an American tv drama ,’ Smash’. ‘Smash’ is a musical drama about how the musical ‘Marylin ( Monroe)’ is born. The sound track is so wonderful , not to mention the storyline. And a heroine of this show is Katharine Mcphee. I guess her name may sound familiar . She is a semi-finalist of ‘American Idol ‘. Anyway, I want to introduce one of her beautiful songs in ‘Smash’.

It is ‘ brighter than the sun’. This song particularly absorbed me. As soon as I heard the song, it evoked a bright and feathery feeling. making my heart flutter. Also her voice is so crystaline and fascinating . This song totally blew my mind.

I think this song is optimal for spring. It reminds me of a image that soft spring rain is tapping on the ground and flowers are blooming. This song does sound lively and hopeful .
To put it differently, when I listen to this song, I feel like stretching in the morning after a sound sleep.

I’m sorry that you have to click the link but I hope you try ^^*.

I’d like to introduce my favorite songs. The first song is Moves like Jagger by Maroon 5. This song was played on K-POP STAR, TV audition show, so I think that many people know this song well. Anyway, Every time I listen to this song, I feel happy and pleasant. So, I listen to this song when I’m on my way to school, and then my fatigue is gone. Honestly, I don’t know the lyrics well, but the melody makes me excited. Sometimes, I sing along this song and dance to the rhythm of this music when I’m walking on the street or when I’m alone at home.

This song is Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO. This music video can see people over the age of 19, but I hope you guys watch this music video for amusement. I think that it’s not too bad. Actually, I didn’t see this music video before and I just listened to the music. I found this music video because of this blogging. By the way, I first listened to this music at the club. At that time, I had such fun because of this song. Since then, I often listen to this song when I’m sad or sensitive. Moreover, all LMFAO’s songs are so lively, exciting and vibrant that I frequently enjoy listening to their music. When I listen to their music, I shake my shoulder and move my legs up and down by myself. I don’t want to listen to sad songs because it makes me feel sad.

I love this song, and this is my favorite song for now haha. The reason why I like song is that this song reminds me some memories. I have listened this song almost every day with my boyfriend. One time, I said that I like this song to my boy friend. He remembered what I said, so he turned on this song when he drove with me. We have sung along this song together. Both of us were not good at singing, so it was terrible though… One more reason why I like it is that I love the lyrics. Specially this part “We’re just having fun We don’t care who sees. So what, we go out That’s how it’s supposed to be. Living young and wild and free”. I really agree that words. I love ‘having fun’. I want you to enjoy this song with me. haha 🙂

The song I want to share with you is “Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity”.
This video looks pretty oldfashioned because it was hit the stand in 1996.
However, it is still one of my favorite songs.
The title of this album is “Travelling Without Moving”, but I sometimes walk outside or drive to suburbs with this song.
while I am listening this song, I can get rid of my stress. I sometimes play this song loudly before I start a mountain of work. It amazingly works and helps me calm.
The rhythm and groove makes my body move to the rhythm.
People said this is ACID Jazz genre but I do not know what it is.
Nevertheless, this genre and this band is so attractive that makes me keep listening their songs.

For example, a friend of mine listens nothing but underground hiphop. Back to this music, I used to listen and use this song for raise mood up. Electronica music has power of moving peaple up and down. This song makes atmosphere very exciting so that events which use this song, mostly party and competetion introduction, make more cool.

Welcome on my post, ladies and gentlemen. Let me introduce my favorite music to you. This song is “Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Extended Remix)” by Deadmau5. Now, Deadmau5 is one of the most popular DJ in the world. His music covers a wide range of genres from Electro house to Dubstep. Especially, this song was remixed by Madeon. This French boy is considered one of the influential geniuses in electropop producer in the world. Additionally, He is only 18 years old. This song has a dreamy atmosphere, so I imagine travelling into space when I listen to this song. In the music, I was became a astronaut, and I have explored the whole wide of space. And, it’s time was to escape from the long and hard school life. But the space travel came to a quick close. Only about four minutes.. Unfortunately, I would love to settle down this space but I do have to go back to Kyunghee University when finished this song.

First, you’ll have to excuse me because I don’t know how to post the video link. I wonder if it’s just fine to paste the address here. Anyway I’ll just go right ahead and start the assignment.

One of my favorite bands is a band called My Chemical Romance. They were an small independant band from New Jersey, first recording ther first album in the garage of the lead singer, Gerard Way. Their first album wasn’t very well known although, in my opinion, was very sublime. The song I’m going to introduce is a song called ‘Helena’. Helena is named after Gerard and Mikey Way’s (each the lead singer and lead guitar in the band) grandmother after she died. Even though it was dedicated to her, I felt a sort of gothic, dark, painful love story unfold. The first time I heard this song, i was genuinely shocked, for I’d never heard this kind of song before. It made me feel a longing for someone I’ve never lost, confused by the ambiguous lyrics, and litterally melt at the electric sounds of the lead and bass guitars. I think what made me unconditionally love this song was the reason that it what not the kind of music genre my peers in Korea listened to and so this made me feel a little special. After listening to this song, I imediately craved for more and thus, my love for My Chemical Romance had started to unfurl. I still like to listen to their songs, although Helena, being my first song to begin my infatuation for MCR. I hope I can find more fans somewhere in this school! Happy listening!

The title is ‘the wind is blowing’ and sung by Lee sora
This music, ‘the wind is blowing’, is realsed in 2004, and I accidently knew this music by K-pop star(audition program). First, the melody was really good, not complicated but clam. However, I was so impressed by the song’s lyric. The lyric is somewhat difficult to understand because each word has more than one meaning and it was descirbed abstractly, for example, “The wind blows like sad, and Blowing empty landscape”. When I listened to this song for the first time, I did not catch the meaning of the lyric. Eventhough, the liyric is talking about sadness after farewell with a lover, I was imaging my uncertain future while listening to the music. Because of many worries about my future thesedays, I was caught by some phrase, such as “If you notice yesterday the same time the world”. So, I can think a lot of things about myself when I listen to this song. Somethimes I get frustrarated after listening this song, but strangely I obtain courage from the song. Although its song expresses a sense of loss, but I believe the loss will ultimately bring up “somethings.

This song is I’m Alright by Neil Zaza. It’s instrumental music that consists of electric guitar, base guitar, and drum – no vocal sound. Despite of no lyrics, I feel promising. I don’t know specific reasons why I’m always impressed by the song again and again. Thanks to my friend who play the guitar very well, I knew this song first. His favorite musician is Neil Zaza, so he recommended the song to play for my rock band performance. Although my rock band didn’t perform the song, I still listen to the song I’m Alright. It might be unfamiliar and unusual to ordinary people, but for me, it’s always attractive that can feel something special.

Last year, I was stuck on the popular American soap opera Glee, which was a kind of musical soap opera. The characters in Glee remade a lot of famous pop songs with new styles. I liked these songs more than the plot of the soap opera. There are many songs I love but I like ‘Hey, Soul Sister’ most. Although I discovered this song in Glee, Train sang the original version of this song. Train is rock band from San Francisco, and they released this song in 2009. When I searched Train, I could hear the original version for the first time. Both the original version and Glee cast’s version have different attraction, but I like Glee’s version more. I usually listen to this song on my way to school. When I listen to this, I can refresh and ease my weary mind. I think this song make people pleasant and fresh.

I would like to share this song, ‘On the Road’ sung by Shinhwa.
These days, many kinds of idols’ music are popular in Korea under the name of Korean wave. However, most of the idol music are full of meaningless lyrics and electronic sound, which harasses my ears. In this situation, Shinhwa has come back recently who is the first generation idol. Shinhwa’s songs have different aspects with other idol music, and it makes me think of my school days. With its beautiful lyrics and bright melody and rhythm, this song helps me to enjoy the boring commuting time.

There are times when I just feel like listening to few songs without lyrics. This is because of the excessively repetitive and annoying lyrics in the songs that are released these days. I personally think that most of its lyrics are rubbish, but I do agree that some songs have very catchy tunes. Yet this doesn’t mean that I listen to it. I think the majority of those songs send meaningless message to us. So I rather choose to listen to songs without lyrics often. When I do, I usually open up the youtube page and watch live performances of people. Jazz is one of my favourite genre. I get fascinated by the way they perform, especially with the jazz pianists. I found this link recently, only about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and I was impressed by how the gospel song ‘Amazing grace’ can be played so cheerfully. Because, when we think of the word ‘gospel’ it sounds heavy and serious, yet this wasn’t! 🙂 Following is the link for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3eBavONwfY

Whenever i listen to this music, I sympathize with this lyrics. Everyone has an experience to part with someone you loved. I also had an experience to say good bye to my ex-boy friend because I don’t like him anymore. Even I said goodbye to him first, I felt so terrible. The parting is always heartbreaking. I have new boy friend now, but whenever I listen to this music, I always think about ‘what if we are breaking up?’. I am pretty sure everyone knows Stevie Wonder. To choose a song I would have to say all of Stevie Wonder’s music. When I was a girl, my dad always had music on everywhere he goes even there’s no one in the house. To bring back my memory, I remember that I used to listen to Stevie Wonder’s music and out of all his music, my favorite one is “Ribbon in the Sky”. This music makes my mind mellow and slow thing down whenever I need to think about something.
Also, it brings back the memories when our family went on a trip (which I can’t remember) and my dad used to sing along while everyone falls asleep. I remembered this because I woke up of his voice. Few years ago, I heard Stevie Wonder came to Korea for a concert. I was dying to go but I had to help my parents so I was very upset. If there is another chance, I would defiantly go for sure.

This song is an original sound track of “Rooftop Prince (옥탑방 왕세자”). The lyric of the song is not really relatable for me because it was about love and I don’t really have anyone in mind. However, I found the rhythm of the song to be very catchy and fun. I felt that the song was bouncy and energetic. I especially liked this song out of all the other songs from ”Rooftop Prince” because all the other songs sounded bit blue while this song felt happy. I especially liked Jay Park’s voice because he has this unique voice and Korean pronunciation. When he is singing the song, I imagine him having lots of fun. I’ve been feeling down lately due to midterms, but this song gives me positive attitude. It makes me want to do something and that’s why I like this song. I love music a lot and generally, i enjoy all kind of music. However, i love this song the most ‘lie(거짓말)’ from Biuret(뷰렛). Whenever I go to the song room, i always sing this song. The reason is that it takes me to the nostalgic mood. I deeply agree with the lyrics. It is about love story and says ‘I said I will forget you, but I can’t. It’s all lie.‘ I liked one boy when I was 20. We went out, watched movies and went on a picnic in spring weather like these day. However, it had not good ending. At that time, I listened this song, but I didn’t agree the lyric with all my heart. As time passed, I thought I didn’t miss him anymore. However, when I was in the sad mood, I found myself that I thought of him and missed him, and had an deep agreement with the lyrics. So, whenever I listen the song, I think of him because I don’t know how he is anymore. At that time, it was really painful to think of him because I couldn’t control myself. However, I know now that was a good memory. I don’t miss him anymore, but this song reminds me of him.

The reason that I like this song is .. when I was pretty exhausted, I wanted to give everything up. Then I talked it to my friend in the cafe and he recommend this song with well-made saying. ‘This song will be make you calm down cause both the lyrics and the voice of singer is good.’ Following his advice, I listend this song on my way to go home. And I felt the peace by his voice, then it cheered me up. It looks like saying the lyrics in my ears. It makes me think as he always be with me. So whenever I listen this song, I feel the same way like the first time when I listend it. If I have a routine day, I listen this song and make me comportable myself. This song give me various advantages in person! I like this song so much and want to recommend this! You also would feel the some mood with mine.

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
Berthold Auerbach quotes (German novelist, 1812-1882). Blog topics suddenly reminded me of a song. The music title is ‘출국‘ song by Harim ,which means “departure” (from a country). I’d like to introduce the narration of this song briefly. At the airport, a woman, leaving from Korea for many a long day, said good bye to her family but a man that fell in love her was just looking behind her unnoticeably. The man prayed that she would call him back when she arrived at somewhere and he would forget her forever and clearly even in his dream.
When it comes to ‘출국’, it contains three unique and deep meanings. Firstly, it is my first song that I sang it at karaoke, called Noraebang in Korea, since 1999 and it is still my favorite song. Secondly, melody captivated my ears as I heard the song for the first time at an outdoor cafe but, the lyrics made my heart even more flutter.
Last but not least, the lyric brought forth a bit of empathy for the writer’s experience which was same as mine. Like the man in the song, my lover left me 2 years ago and after that I never contacted with her again. It affected me to change my view of love. The song ‘출국’ has deeply meaningful to me and become part of my life.

This song always makes me melancholy and reminds me of childhood. Old sound of this song is so comfort to listen. And the flow of this song is so dramatic. Start with calm and quiet mood then it become passionate.

I listen to this song in my room not in street or in bus. In general I use my mp3 player to listen to the music while I’m outside. but when I’m listen to this song, I don’t want to be interruped by anything. So I listen to this song in my room with the original CD.
when I’m drunk little, I used to listen ‘Is this love’ sung by Whitesnake. It reminds me of my ex-love memories.

When I listen to this song, I imagine the Led zeppelin. they were the greatest band in 70.80’s I have watched their many videos and It makes me imagine their performances while I’m listenning to their songs.

I love all of the music in the world. But I tend not to listen to the electric-copied song with same rhythm, same melody…. seems like manufactured from the factory.

Whenver I listen to this song, I feel comfortable. The singer of this sonf has really pretty voice. This song was my favorite TV drama, Alone in Love(연애시대)’s OST, so I got to know it. Before I broke up with my first boyfriend, I liked this song because of its clear voice. However, after breaking up with him, I began to concentrate on its lyrics, also. She sang about her thoughts after breaking up. There is a sentence, “If we had met later, would we have loved longer?”. After I experienced break up, I could sympathize with that sentence. Since then, this song has been a remedy to every broken relationships not just, about a boy friend.

My favorite song, ‘Road’ is sung by ‘god’ which was one of the most famous and popular singer group in the late 1990`s in Korea. This is 4th album of god released in November, 2001. The song is about road. This road is not just a normal road but a use of figure of speech about life track.
How many people are sure about their life? I think almost no one. A number of people ask several questions about their life ceaselessly until they die. For example, ‘Am I on a right track?’ or ‘Where is the ultimate definition?’ In addition, we sometimes forget what we really want in our life because of busy working days. This song gives us time to think carefully about our life.
I listen to this song whenever I feel skeptical about my life. Anxiety about uncertain future and boring every day routine makes me become lethargic. So I constantly ask myself, ‘What am I living for?’, ‘Am I going right?’ and ‘What am I doing?’ This song always relieves my stress about the problems of living and makes me feel calm and comfortable. Additionally, it gives me some time for self-examination.
Therefore, I listen to this music whenever I get discouraged by something related to my dream and life. It cheers me up every time. I hope you would enjoy this song as well.

What an awesomely diverse mix of styles, songs and opinions so far. Great posts. I thought I might add one more (that might show my age, oops). I love this power ballad because it reminds me of a breakup with a previous girlfriend. When I was young, breakups were usually quite painful – naturally. Now that I’m older and can look back on them, I appreciate the lessons they taught me. I have few regrets, but understand that the low points in life are necessary to appreciate the good times and that (Warning: Cliche Alert –>) after every rain comes sunshine. Interestingly, when I just rewatched this video this time, “I Remember You,” I didn’t think of my old girlfriend, but just the hairstyles on the band members. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-VqhZXlPEc&feature=fvst

Actually this song is a famous one because it was introduced by a movie named ‘Dream Up’ and a Korean television commercial.
I like this song not only because of the melody but because of the lyrics as well. I usually listen it whenever I have a spare time especially when I get in a reminiscent mood. This song shows a feeling of a man who falls into a reminiscence and misses people he used to get along with. He mentions some group or single person he wants to meet again and expresses his longing for them. This song makes me feel almost same as him. Just like what he feels, when I listen this song I get started to look back on my old days and the people who I met in the past but still live in my memories. He asks them how to live now. Same as him I want to ask the people I miss how they are nowadays. And I hope to thank them for encouraging me and cheering me up. I think this song is really nice in the way that making people recall their cherishable days.

Wow. First of all, I want to thank you for giving me a chance to listen my favorite songs and take a break from my boring cramming for the midterm exam. It indeed relaxed me a lot. The song I want to introduce here is ‘The Voice Within’. This was sung by Christina Aguilera, a famous Hollywood singer. This song, The Voice Within, is one of my favorites among a number of songs in my music list. The time when I listened to this song for the first time, about 10 years ago, I was really amazed at her impressive vocal range. I was also impressed by her singing style and her voice. She has such a strong and powerful voice that whenever I listen to her songs, I feel myself being stronger and more confidence like a warrior. Actually, I didn’t care about the lyric of this song that much at that time. I just liked this song because of her voice and singing style as I mentioned above. However, I’ve just found that not only her musical techniques such as her voice or style of singing are awesome but also the lyric is really impressive and even touching. When I was young, I didn’t worry about many things as much as I do nowadays. Everything was smooth and worked out well. I don’t mean I’m unhappy or unlucky though. To be frank, before I listened to this song again today, I was just little bit worried that I’m not a child anymore which means I have to take care of myself and I’m responsible to every single thing I decide to do. I was little bit depressed because I wasn’t sure whether I was ready for that or not. This song, however, encouraged me. Whenever I feel afraid of confronting something new and want to hide in a place where nobody can find easily, I will trust myself as the lyric of the song says. Oops. I’m being too sentimental now. Anyway. the lyric of this song really touched my heart today. I recommend my classmates and the professors this song.

The song that I want to introduce is “The wind blows” sang by So Ra Lee. The song was shown on TV program “I am a singer.” which was sensational last year. Actually, I usually listen to light and cheerful music, so I didn’t know that music. Additionally, when I listen to that song, I just thought ” It is good. She sings well.” ,and I couldn’t know true value of the song. One sad day, however, I listened that song as seeing lyrics of the song. That day, I listened that song more than 10 times, and I was in tears.
A girl with bobbed-hair is standing there. Her tears fell in big drops. It rains in the sky, but she can’t feel that it rains because she’s so sad. As she sheds tears, she remind the time that she spent with the boy. She smiled sweetly beside the boy. The girl was so shy, but she tried talk to him. She gave her delicate but passionate love to him that she hadn’t done before. She jumped for joy because of his word of greeting and was sleepless in thinking of him. It was the time that will be remembered forever. But the girl was just a common little girl to the boy. She realize that the time that she was with him was like a sweet midsummer night’s dream to her, however, to him it was just a tedious everyday life. She cuts her hair to let him go. Finally, she shes tears to say goodbye to him and a gust of wind blows.

This is my favorite song titled “You raise me up”. It has lots of version and many artists have song this music but I prefer to listen this one which song by Westlife. It gives lots of meaning and encouregement when I depressed by something hard to solve. This song makes me confident because of lyrics that “I am strong when I am on your shoulder” As I listen this part of music I feel that I gain a power or energy that I can do everything. It is like a spring rain to my deserted mind and.

You may not know this but the reason Westlife got their name is because most of the group’s members were from Sligo on the west coast of Ireland. Sligo is also famous as it is the final resting place of W.B. Yeats, possibly the finest poet in the English language (and one of the few to rival Shakespeare to such a title).

Music has always been one of the most important parts of my life for many reasons. Thinking back over the times when i first went to America, music was my only companion who  comforts me whenever i feel depressed. it also was a means of communicating with my foreign friends at school when i could hardly speak English.

Okay. Now let me introduce the song called ‘bye bye bye’ by N Sync because it was the first English song i have ever mastered singing the lyric. It reminds me of the happiest days of my middle school years. Back then, i was one optimistic person who used to  appreciate every of my life with no worries about the future at all. It has already been about twelve years since i first encountered the song. But still, it remains to be my favorite song because it is full of the reminiscences of my adolescent years in the US.

I want to introduce a song, the title is “fly again” sung by Korean singer “Star”. It was the OST(Original Sound Track) of Korean drama “Two outs in the Ninth inning”. Therefore, whenever I listen this song, I imagine some scenes of the drama. The most impressive scene was in the last episode. All actors and actress were the friend from 20. In the last episode, they became 30, and they still were close and kept their relationships. They took each other by hand and walked a street by singing a song which they knew together. Moreover, they received a letter from themselves of 20. They wrote the letter 20 and decided to send all letters to each person after 10years by one of them. On the day of tenth year later, all friends were in adversities respectively. However, they were cheered up by reading the letter from themselves of past. Therefore, last episode was very impressive to me and the song always remind of me that scenes. In addition, the lyrics of the sone is cheerful, so when I have some troubles or adversities, I listen this song for refreshing myself. Sometimes I sing this sone in the Karaoke when I am stressful. While I sing this song, I can get the energy, and become excited. And then, I can do everything with positive mind. I strongly recommend thin song for someone who is in trouble. This song will give you affirmative energy.

Firstly, my favorite movie is Leon.
When the main character comes or does some important mission,
I can often hear this music. So i feel like I become a powerful man
‘ Leon ‘ . Second It can remind my teenager memories. When I was a
high school student, I used to watch this movie with my friend.
We admire Leon’s masculinity. I want you to listen this music at least
just one time in your life. This song ‘ Shape of my heart ‘ always give me impression whenever i listened . Actually the movie ‘ Leon ‘ is not a happy ending movie but a gloomy one. I think this song helps increasing the gloomy mood , so billons of people like this movie.

    Buskerbusker – Stop Station

When I watched an audition show, Super Star K3, I heard this song ‘ stop station’ sung by Korean band ‘ buskerbusker’. Actually, originally the song was sung by Korean singer ‘panic’ i liked and this song was remaked by buskerbusker. Even if panic was my favorite singer rather than buskerbusker, I liked this song sung by buskerbusker rather than the song sung by panic because buskerbusker sung for their mothers, actually a mainsinger sung for mother. I I felt the band didn’t play and sing this song as panic but a mainsinger sincerly sung for his mother. Hearing this song, I thought my mother and felt various feelings such as sorriness, gratitude, and longing for her. Sometimes, I would hear this song and call my mother. So, this song is significant for me becaumse it makes me think my mother.

I like songs.Everyday when I get home from school, I turn on my MP3 to enjoy them. But of all the songs,I like English classic songs best, especially the one “Take Me to Your Heart”.It’s really a nice thing to listen to it.Its melody is wonderful and its words are moving. The song is about the love between a boy and a girl, the boy loves the girl so deeply that he can even give his heart to the girl.Hower the girl seems not to understand him.How moving the story is! Whenever I hear the song,I am affected.I wish I were the boy in the song.

I choose the song Sixpence none the richer’s “kiss me.” The reason is similar with the professor’s reason. I think this song’s melody and the singer’s voice are really harmonize with the sun shine and cherry blossom. When I go to the bus stop in the morning, there are many chrry blossom trees on the road. At that time, I always listen this song nowadays. This song makes me feel really good.
