Game Changers

May 7, 2012
by

What is a game changer? Well, essentially, it’s a bold and risky initiative that fundamentally alters the strategic landscape, creating new possibilities and forcing others to rethink their own positions.

2012 is proving to be a busy year in politics. Already this year we have seen some big shakeups on the political scene. In Korea, national elections kept conservative politicians in power, while in the meantime there appears to be another shakeup over the imports of U.S. Beef orchestrated by the left. In Europe, things are changing also. In France, the recently elected François Hollande of France plans to turn against the steps towards austerity imposed by his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy. Greece, which has been ground zero in the battle against the debt crisis, has also seen a sharp change in the political lie of the land.

Will this man be a game changer in the European debt crisis?

In the coming months, the battle for power will affect us further when Korea engages in its presidential elections, and also the much talked about U.S. presidential battle between Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney will finally take place. Surely the way our planet functions is about to change, or is it? Will 2012 really be the game changer some people are hoping it will be? Well, you can think about that in your own time.

The landing of UN troops at Incheon during the Korean War was a definite game changer.

A game changer is a term we use to describe an action, event, or person, who changes the way things operate and function. We encounter game changers all the time, be they in sports, politics, or even just every-day life, and often there is little we can do about them, we just have to continue living our lives. Game changers can just happen, or we can expect actions, events or people to turn out to be one.

One game changer that comes to mind is the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, which changed many of the ways we lived our lives. However in contrast, many people expected Barrack Obama to be the political game changer in US politics, however he turned out to disappoint many of the people who had laid so much trust in him.

The completion of the duomo on the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence was a game changer in early-modern engineering and construction.

Your assignment is as follows

Choose an event, action, or person from the past 10 years that has been a game changer, and analyse this example. You can do this one of two ways:

  1. You can choose to approach the cause or effects of this event, action, or person, and its importance to the world we live today.
  2. You can compare and contrast the differences between before the event, action, or arrival (ascendancy) of person and the situation in the world today.
Rules
  1. You cannot choose an event, action, or person, that another student has already chosen.
  2. Your choice of an event, action, or person, must come from the past 10 years – if you choose a person, what they have done to make a difference (or not as the case may be) must have happened in the past 10 years.
  3. Try to think up your own example.

Remember to use plenty of supporting information, transitions, connectors, signals, and the more specific your example is the better a response it will get. Also, try to be diverse and unique. The event, action, or person doesn’t need to be famous, but its effect should be recognisable as a game changer that effected the way we live today!

Here are a few links that might give you some examples of what you can consider a game changers

(please don’t copy straight from the list as it defeats the purpose of the exercise)

I read the article of the ‘The Mighty Eagle of Angry Birds’ in the ‘Time’s 2012 list of game changers!’.

In the subway, most people gazed into the screen of smart phone. And they tried to hard gain three stars. This addictied game is Angry Birds. In the game, we can touch the screen, red or another birds fly to the various structures and hit the hogs. After that, score is calculating and we get the star. Angry Birds was developed by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Mobile. Now, this amazing game is the most popular mobile game in the Apple’s AppStore and Google’s Android Market. Also, this game had a great influence over the not only mobile application market but also many terms of our life.

For that reasons, chief marketing officer at Rovio, Peter Vesterbacka is one of the game changers in recent time.

First, before the Angry Birds was developed, most smart phone games was not creative. Most games has simply transformation or imitation of previous feature phones game. But after the Angry Birds developed, many game developer tried to benchmarking this game, and they could developed many creative games in the smart phone application markets.

Another aspect of this innovation is very amazing. Angry Birds, greatly influenced size of the market for mobile application. Before this developed, market size of application was not huge. But after that, Angry Birds become big hits. In terms of profitability, Angry Birds prove that money in application market is potentially big, so many other game developers tried to into the mobile game market. For example, game times of Angry Birds in every day was 330-million times.

Last changes was not related to the mobile market. Angry Birds had a large infulence over the our life.
Before the developed this game, world chracter market was very limited, but after developed and hit it, Rovio Mobile entered characters markets. And this choose was succeeded. People have had enough of old characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, etc, so they welcomed the new character. Angry Birds character T-shirts are being sold in the world, and it had been sold one million copies each month.

Angry Birds potential is still an unknown quantity. A new series of Angry Birds is comes out regularly seasons, and many of character product is comes out. I think, this amazing game is best game changers in whole of the mobile world.

In June 2007, epiphany of Iphone has astounded the whole world. It was rather a small computer than a mere cell phone. Appearance of Iphone was a major game changer for all of cell phone companies, and to the users of Iphone in many ways.

Before Iphone was invented, we had to carry several electronic devices for our conveniences. For example, we carried electronic dictionaries to search for vocabulary, MP3 for music, cellphone to contact with others, laptop to search internet, ipod or PSP to watch movies. Nevertheless we are now able to do all things listed above, just with Iphone.

The invention was game changer for smartphone manufacturing companies, too. Entrance of Iphone was like a natural disaster. Apple company has kept the secret so well that other companies did not knew the hammer was right above their head until Steve Jobs has made the legendary presentation of Iphone. After customers have seen the Iphone, other smartphones were just not good enough. They had to suffer severe loss of customers, and start imitating the Iphone.

In 2011, cumulative number of Iphone sales has exceeded one hundred million. Apple became a seriously major company, – even more than it was before – and Steve Jobs has become one of the most influential people in the world, – condolences to the deceased – due to the very invention of Iphone. World has changed by Iphone, as much as light of Edison did once.

I totally agree with you. Many people think that Iphone is the revolution of mobile. I can see clear differences between before the invention and after the invention.

In November 2010, G20 summit was held in Seoul, Korea. It is marvelous event that Korea, which dod not participate in UN after WW2, became a chairman country of G20. It proved Korea’s soared position in 21st century. It was the first summit to be held in newly industrializing economics. Korea had a leading role in the process from setting subjects from deduction of a joint declaration.

In fact, Republic of Korea overcame the colonial period of Japan(60 years before) and IMF economic crisis quickly. And it was growing rapidly. But, we could not be treated like our position from the world. Also, we could not exercise our right to speak. Korea was covered with the United States. Before 2010 G20, our position was increasing smoothly through 1988 Olympics and 2002 World Cup.

After G20, Korea can join at the line of world leader. It had contributed to increase the status of Korea. It is a big accomplishment of the Korea diplomacy history. G20 gave an opportunity to grow into leading country at the world stage. In addition, we can enlarge international network, such as politics and economics, based on the chairman country.

I would say the movie ‘Dogani’ if someone asked me about what is the game changer which acually had influnced to real life as a movie. ‘Dogani’ has influnced not only the trend of movie but also actual the law for disabled people. This movie straightfowardly shows the sexual harassment and abuse of young disabled student by immoral teacher. We didn’t think much about how was disabled student school life. But after this movie, the interest of disabled people and their policy spiked up so high that it changed the law of protecting disabled student more safer and clearer. And the trend of movie that divulges the absurdity of society concerned about the weak comes a lot. Before ‘Dogani’, people tended to be reluctant to say about the absurdity of society. But after this happened, people talked a lot about what the world should be.

I would like to pick ‘Jasmine Revolution’ (also called Tunisian Revolution, 18 December 2010~ March 2011) as one of the most notable game changers in world politics.

‘Jasmine Revolution’ was sparked by a young man’s self-immolation in protest of police corruption and ill treatment in Tunisia on 18 December 2010 and named after Tunisia’s national flower, Jasmine.

The democratic uprisings resulted from a Tunisian people’s rage against high unemployment, food inflation, corruption, a lack of political freedoms and poor living conditions in Tunisia.

Many protesters had been killed or injured by the authorities while claminig a thorough democratization of the country and free and democratic elections. As a result, a series of demonstrations eventually led to the outsting of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011 ending his 23 years of his regime.

With the success of the protests in Tunisia, this democratic wave spread to other countries in Arab world, where longtime autocracy has been rooted so deeply.

In Egypt, President Hosni Nubarak resigned on 11 February 2011 after 18 days of massive protests ending his 20-year presidency. Also, the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed by an armed civil army after 42 years of his reign. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh signed the power-transfer after his 22-year rule to avoid prosecution.

In addition, numerous major and minor protests have occured in Bahrain, Syria , Yemen, Algeria, Jordan, Morocco and Iraq, which is called ‘Arab Spring’.

I personally was thrilled to witness the democratic movement in those countries because I missed our own country’s. Other countries such as China, is wary of the aftermath of Arab Spring. I definitely think Jasmine Revolution is an important game changer, which has become the outset of Arab Spring.

The revolution that Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press brought about is as great as today’s Internet revolution. It’s safe to say that today, most things have been affected by Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press both directly and indirectly.

Before the invention of the printing press, only the upper class could enjoy literature because most of the lower classes couldn’t afford to purchase even necessaries. However, the invention of the printing press brought many changes not only to the life of the low class but also to science and globalization.

First, mass production and distribution of book became possible, so anyone, even the poor, could broaden one’s knowledge and exchange information. In addition, information sharing and conservation improved people’s intellectual level dramatically. This allowed us to read a book and enjoy a cultural life today.

Also, the invention of the printing press had an effect on science. By information conservation, people could learn a great of scientific knowledge. As people got scientific knowledge, marine navigation systems were advanced more and more. As a result, people were able to move to parts of the world, which contributed to the economic growth and globalization.

It’s really amazing that only the printing press had a lot of effects on our lives. Due to the invention of the printing press, we are able to take classes and learn many things. Therefore, it’s no doubt that Johannes Gutenberg’s the printing press is one of the best game changers.

    • May 10, 2012 9:54 pm

Sorry but your choice should have been from the past 10 years. I believe the Gutenberg press is a bit older than this…

You don’t have to rewrite it, but please pay full attention the task’s requirements in future.

I would like to pick Gabrielle Chanel(19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971) as a game changer who was an influential French fashion designer and founder of the famous brand Chanel. She acquired the name ‘coco’, possibly derived from a popular song she sang, or allusion to the French word for kept woman: cocotte. Actually she is the person who made women free from the corset.
Gabrielle started her industry of hat in 1910. Expanding the industry into the clothes, she made pants for women and made skirt shorter. In expanding campaign for women, she made practical and at the same time elegant clothes for women. In short, she designed clothes that worked with the body for the modern woman. Her influence on passion industry was really huge and she said that there is no need for time except time for loving or working. Until now, the name Chanel became a byword for elegance.
In sum, she is one of the influencial game changer.

I was in Hongkong for exchange student programme last year. Around March of last year, I was asked many times by my foreign friends,
“How about Korea? Is everything okay there?”. I didn’t know what they were talking about and I just said stupidly. “yes, everything is okay.” After too many questions during two or three days, I wondered the reason and finally I found it was about Tsunami.
I think the Tsunami is the biggest game changer. That’s because it alerted to human beings that the globe is not ours but we are just tiny creatures belong to nature. The 9.11 event was the disaster by the cruel and ruthless people but this event ‘Tsunami’ was the warning of nature that we acted high-handlely that the globe was like one of our stuff. I think that people realized we are belong to the universe not on the top after the tragic event which brought out hundreds people’s death, unrecoverable collapse of the infras.
So the Tsunami which attacked Japan at March. 11 was the game changer that people recognized we could die anytime at anywhere by horrible nature disasters.

Recently, we are all big fan of one person. She is now one of the greatest influential person in the world. ‘Time’ magazine has chosen her several times. She is not a politician but has an significant influence on our society. What she does and What she prefers effect us very much. I am talking about Yuna Kim, who got gold medal in skating in recent Olympics. Before her debut, skating was not a popular sports among Koreans. There were only few ice-rinks and few players. However, since Yuna Kim did great in international competitions, ice skating became very popular. Many people were interested in this sport and many people tried it. Now, there are many ice-rinks near by, and infras are progressed quite much. Also, she became very influential. She is now trying to be an ambassador of Olympics, and member of International Olympics Committee(IOC). Sports players now involved in not only their plays but in political, social categories.

I think Kim Yu-Na is one of the world’s most influential people. She caused a change in figure skating of the world, and she shows possibility of a Korean figure skating. She began skating at the age of 7 and shone as a junior. At that time, the condition of South Korean figure skating was the worst. The number of figure skaters is less than a hundred, and even there was not an ice link only for figure skaters. She also suffered financial hardship and lots of injuries. Despite these difficulties, she built a successful career. In 2010 Vancouver Olympic, she set a new world record for the free skate and won the gold medal. Her victory gave hope to Korean, and many young people start to dream of becoming figure skating. She changed not only the condition of Korean figure skating but also the status of South Korea in figure skating of the world.

I read the Digital Policy which is by using such websites as Twitter; Facebook, and Youtube, as well as electronic devices like cell phones, politicians could find out citizens’ opinions and use the information to reflect upon current government policy. In addition, using Digital Policy could make each country a beneficiary country as well as an aid country economically. Who made it possible for this to happen? Alec Ross, a senior adviser for innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, made Digital Policy. He mentioned that “smart power” could cause various effects to support national policy. I think using the digital equipments could have enough power to change the policy flow, therefore it to be a good policy to take in effect. In case of Korea, voting rate for younger generation is currently increasing due to using Social Network Service (SNS). SNS’s affect on the voting rate is caused when someone famous uploads a picture as a proof of voting. Additionally, citizens could against government policy like Free Trade Agreement. They could gather the people within a day or even one hour. And then they demonstrate to show opposite view about government policy. Lastly, digital devices allow the user to freely upload their ideas and give opinions to others’ ideas. If you have a smart phone, you could post their opinion real-time. You are able to share your ideas and your ideas might become issues online. As enforced Digital Policy, it has given people the power to express themselves as well as get information from people all around the world. But since it is a powerful tool, it should be used with caution.

Recently, I have lost my pleasure of watching a TV on Saturday. Maybe many people will be waiting for it like me. It is just the Infinite Challenge (무한도전) has aired on MBC for 8 years. I think it is one of the many game changers. Before the Infinite Challenge appeared, many other entertainment shows was usually not real. But the Infinite Challenge is a real variety show. Thus, It is difficult to divide into real and unreal. This new trend caught many people’s attentions. After this TV program succeeded, other similar programs showed such as 1박2일. Even though many similar programs appeared, the Infinite Challenge is still gaining many viewers’s affection. In addition, this famous program has affected diverse fields. Lately, posters about Korean food ‘Bibimbap’ were stuck in New York. 2 years ago, they did this project to inform Korean foods. I think the Infinite Challenge made a concept that TV entertainment shows can give an impression and a lesson as well as a pleasure.

I guess this subject is a little bit difficult.
I thought about Lee Jasmine who is the first foreign politicain.
Even though she is not politicain yet, It could be a hope of all foreigners especially South-East Asians. It means that Koreans have changed their recognition about foriengers.
Since long time ago, Koreans have regarded Korean blood as important thing, so they didn’t like other bloody people. As the world became closer, lots of foreigners came to Korea. However many Koreans thought them lower class than Korean, thus Koreans treated them with discrimination. The employers did like that they gave salary less than Korean, sweared, and beat. If the employee is illigal foreigner, he or she would be sweated. But they could not insist their rights.
However, as time went by, the more foreigners increase, the more Koreans have taken interest in the problem, began to fight with the poor foreigners. Because pretty Koreans got married them and quite foreigners are working many factories. So the foreign policy has been changed and new organizations came up.
As a result, Korea needs a person who represent foreigners rights, and now Lee Jasmine became a politician. Although she has some scandal which is fake dipolma, she will be a game changer in Korean society.
Both Koreans and foreigners expect that this events will combine them to a better Korea.

Many people would agree  that attempting to redirect the principle ways of our life flow existed for a long period of time have been the most difficult and risky challenge through out the human history. Back in the days when our ancestors lived, these actions had demanded  huge sacrifications in a form of blood-sheding death through the wars such as French Revolution and American Civil War  Even in modern days, we have seen  noncountable events and people who unprecedently have exercised great influence in changing the world. The 2001 September 11 attack on World Trade Center in New York was one of the most noticable and shocking game changers that enabled the world to be aware of the life threatening influence of the terrorists. This event surely have  changed the attitude of United States towars the world, especially the Islamic countries by enacted and revised laws, putting the issue of national security on top of every other importance. As a result of this, the congress passed the PATRIOT act as a means to prevent and fight against terrorism that is threatening the homeland security. However, many humanist groups and civilians expressed strong opposition and criticised agains this law because it invades  privacy of people and eventually violate the founding ideas of the Constitution which embraces the freedom and rights of individual people.
Another game changer that noticably out stands in the twenty first century is the first African-American US president, Burrak Obama. In shock, he defeated the Republican nominee John McCain won the 2008 election. This surely had affected American politics in a tremandously way not only be cause he was the first black president ever to be elected through out the globe, but also becuase as a member of social minority, he was the first person to    go beyond the racial glass-ceiling in the US politics. Futher to this, his unprecedent achievement as the representative of the black society paved a way and opened up a hope of possibilities and opportunities in the fields other than sports and entertainments to black people. Moreover, even with strong criticism and opposition from the Conservatives, Obama also is the first American president to publicly support and embrace the same-sex marriage by reaffirming that the land of American was founded under the idea of equal rights. He indeed, stirred up the social and political spheres of American people in a way that no other former presidents could by putting out his actions to change the world where diversity is recognized and respected.

Oops. I think I made a mistake and I want to apologize for it. I thought I just had to pick an event or a person that influenced the world hugely. But I realized I had to find an event that has an effect on world TODAY and my topic, Iraq War, doesn’t affect our present lives a lot. T.T I should have been more careful T.T I’m so sorry for this.

I’d like to consider Iraq War (also called Gulf War 2) as a game changer. There are several combined factors that can be referred to as the causes of the war between The United States and Iraq.
First, America wanted to eliminate weapons of mass destruction that Iraq had. After Gulf War(1990~1991), America found that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and renounced some of them. Since then, America had kept inferring that there were more weapons left in Iraq. Finally, America declared the war to take the weapons away from Iraq.
Secondly, America wanted to prevent further possibilities of terrorism. America thought that Iraq was maneuvering at the bottom of terrorism and harboring the leader of 9/11 attacks, bin Laden.
Thirdly, America wanted to destroy dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and spread democratism not only in Iraq but also in other Middle Eastern countries around Iraq. America argued that Iraq and other countries needed Democracy to solve their problems such as poverty, terrorism and so on.
To sum up, America started the war for national security of the U.S. and world peace.
However, some people believe that the reasons mentioned above are just justifications for the war and America started the war to secure petroleum resources of Iraq. At that time, the president, George W. Bush and many chief executives were supported and subsidized by oil companies. Therefore, America decided to have the war for the benefit of well-known oil companies. Some people also say that America launched the war to test new weapons and to show off their army power.
The war broke out in 2003 so it doesn’t affect our present lives a lot. However, the war was a shocking and striking event and thus affect the lives of people and world economy hugely at that time.
While the war was going on, oil prices fell rapidly and the price of a stock rose because many people expected that world economy would be recovered by the war. However, the result of the war was quite different from many people’s presupposition. After the war, oil prices surged. Therefore, Countries which imported oil from Iraq such as Japan were badly affected by this situation. In addition to that, Korea also was influenced by the war. The war and the U.S.’s foreign policy had an effect on the nuclear problem of North Korea. For this reason, many analysts conjectured that the possibility of a war between South Korea and North Korea was really high at that time. As a result, foreign investment capital flowed out of South Korea and the exchange rate suddenly soared.

I would like to introduce Ban Ki-moon as a game changer who is the eighth and current Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was elected to be the eighth Secretary-General by the United Nations General Assembly On 11 October 2006. Ban has been repected from not only Koreans, but also many other countries’ people because he has well led several major reforms regarding peacekeeping and UN employment practices.
Also, a few days ago, he was awarded the Distinguished International Leadership.
As these show, Ban Ki-moon is one of the most influential persons in the world. Especially, to Korean, he gave much of self-respect and pride to Korean since he showed that not only just Westerners but Korean can be the leader of the world. How suprising and pleased this is! In addition, although he can not speak English fluently, he has been doing all of the things very well. I really feel moved by this. He also makes students like me ,who can not pronunciate English well, get motivated.
As one of memebers of Koreans, I really proud of and respect him.

Literature can cause a effet on a society. For example, recently, Gong Ji young’s novel named DOGANI which is written about real incedent turns into a movie. It deals with young children sexual violence. First, Korean man actor Gongyu read that novel and impressed this reality. So he sugeested director and invested making this movie. The outcome was successed. People want to rethink this incident. Public prosecutors are reinvestigate these incedent and find out real fact. Therefore, offenders went a prison. It means one person’s thinking spreads society. It changes society bettter place. In this case, I realize the pen is mightier than the sword.

Do you remember Daegu subway tragedy? This happened in February 18th, 2003 at Daegu subway line 1. Because of this, the biggest casualties have come about since ‘Sampoong department store collapse.’ 192 people were killed and 148 people were wounded from this incident. This tragic accident would have not occurred if appropriate action had taken. Daehan Kim, who was 56 at that time, had intellectual disability. He suffered from severe depression. He ignited at train no.1079 and a conflagration came into force. This fire shifted to train no.1080. As a consequence, two trains were completely burned and a number of people died and injured from this event.
This incident could not have happened if someone in the cab had stopped Daehan Kim earlier. When he did the first try, the old snarled at him. Therefore, it was restrained. Surprisingly, after the first attempt of arson, station side didn`t take measures. Moreover, people in the cab looked on this. 1~2 people took steps when Daehan Kim did the second ignition but it was too late. A big fire broke out in an instant. However, no one tried to use fire extinguisher in this situation.
The most amazing thing was the action of locomotive engineers. When train no.1079 was burning, engineer sensed the blaze and ran away. After escaping, he even didn`t report to duty office. As the duty officer didn`t got the report from engineer, he ignored a fire alarm. Thus, when train no.1080 arrived, a fire shifted to it. Duty officer realized the seriousness of situation belatedly. He announced train no.1080 to leave the station but the train was already stopped. This was because the supply of electricity stopped due to fire. All lights were turned off as well. Duty officer commanded the engineer no.1080 to evacuate passengers. However, he bunged off with master keys. On that account, 142 passengers were locked in the burning cab. The most shocking thing was engineers, who evacuated from train, gathered at restaurant and ate food calmly when passengers were dying in the cab. They just tried to make excuses rather than save passengers. Despite everything, it was fortunate that a Korail staff was there. He activated emergency equipments at the risk of his life. Accordingly, few passengers could escape from there.
In addition, there were technical problems. If fire-fighting tools and equipments were plentiful, the toll of casualties might be reduced. Furthermore, sheets and interior materials were combustible. Particularly, when sheets were burnt down, a fatal poisonous gas was released.
Because of all these factors, this terrible tragedy happened. Daegu subway tragedy will mark the 10th anniversary next year. I hope this kind of tragic event would never take place.

After this incident, subway shutter was installed. Sheet were changed into stainless steel. A fire drill and other training are take effect now. Fire-fighting equipments are furnished every stations. The safefy of using subway is increasing as the time goes by. As a result, I think Daegu subway tragedy is game changer.

I think the most magnificant changes of these day’s is Internet computergames.
it’s first success is in Korea, game called 바람의 나라. and Linege. and starcraft. it’s success convinced to game maker’s that it’s market will be grown up. so they make hundreds genres of many Internet game.
Now the game market had grown 1trillion Won. the most biggest company is nexon. their asset size is 50billion won. and next biggest one is NC Soft. today this both company import many countries such as China and Japan and Spain and U,S.
their success also inspired Blizzard. so Blizzard make their computer game that can play with other people.
the reason why people playing this game can be found on failure of real world. because real society cannot satisfy people. this is because of neo liberalism I think, it’s inordinate competition usually does not take care of loser’s. it mean loser’s cannot find where they can stand. so they find something to find. and they choose Internet computer game.

It is quiet similiar with case of hollywood film. hollywood film became popular when intellectual people lose their job when Great depression so they goes to hollywood and make it better.

I’d like to choose a person called Jeremy Lin, who is a famous basketball player. He’s been selected as one of the world’s most influential people by Times in this year. One significant point is that he is an Asian player who are in general, drooped by White players owing to their physical disadvantages. He is also considered an outstanding player unlike normal basketball players in that he graduated Harvard University and he majored in not sport but Economics.
At first, he didn’t get much chance to play in NBA because there was a prevalent stereotype that Asian players can’t take an active role in the games. But when the time NBA need a new player they hired Jeremy Lin. No one expected that this man could make a remarkable outcome to the team Knicks. But unlike people’s expectations, he brought about series victories to the team. He’s plays were enough to be a ‘gust’ and worldwide medias started to pay attention to this small but gigantic Tiwanese American player.
Based on his talent, he led other players and made the team won many games even including the game which matched with Kobe Bryant who is the best player among American national basketball teams. Actually, he could make a good social status by what he’d done in his study but he chose to be a player because of his fervor for basketball. In spite of lots of difficulties he didn’t give up and continued to make an effort,
His popularity is becoming more large across races and social positions all over the world. People call his emergence as a yellow sensation. And there were formed lots of neologism like Linsanity(Lin+insanity), Linderella story(Lin+incredible), Lincredible (Lin+incredible), Lin on me(Lin+Lin on me) and so on.
He overturned people’s insights that Asians can’t survive in the basketball leagues and showed a new possibility.

From on March 15th, Korea&USA FTA became effective. FTA between two countries was big issue on Korea society because it can shift the system of Korea economic direction in general. Conservatives and progressives went into a fierce argument, but despite of the intense objection to FTA, Korea finally began to act on Korea&USA FTA.

Korea&USA FTA is a huge game changer on Korea society. By making FTA association, Korea economic direction has gradually aimed to more free market economic. In other word, the Korea government more and more has rejected protectionist policy, but tried to develop global capitalism. This social phenomenon has become increasingly strong.

After making this contract with USA which is the most powerful economic country in the world, the Korea government has pushed ahead to make FTAs such EU and China. We can guess that the government is committed to further effort on aiming at carrying out far open-door policy.

To add information about Korea&USA FTA, the advantages that Korea can obtain are able to be summarized into two. Most of all, the tax of automobiles will be getting decreased. Therefore, in the stance of consumer, they can buy cars with lower price. Also, consumers benefit car’s maintenance cost by reducing registration tax and so on. Another advantage is that 350 thousand will be created, so it may contribute to solve youth problem partly. However, FTA also has disadvantages. Because USA’s big market will advance to Korea, it can threaten the lives of poor merchant. In addition, there are diverse poison pills such as ratchet (can’t return to original state) which jeopardize not only Korea’s economy but also policy, culture

As Korean who was in Korea, 2002, nobody forgot the moment of deep impression, because 2002 was the first time that Korean national soccer team advanced the semifinals in World Cup. It was the first in Korean history but also in Asian history. I was deeply moved, and cried watching the soccer game. All Korean enjoyed the unprecedented victory. I think it was the important event, because the public’s attention for sports increased after the 2002 World Cup.
Because of the event in 2002, several changes took place in diverse aspects. First of all, soccer game became the national sports. Unlike nowadays, Most of Korean ignored or didn’t trust the abilities of national soccer team before the 2002World Cup. Through that event, however, Korean national team showed that they were talented enough as they can reached the international level.
Second, the environment or infrastructure became better. Korea did not have good infra structure for soccer team or players. Thanks to the event in 2002, a lot of facilities like soccer center in Mokpo-si were built , so soccer players can train up and practice using that infra structure now. As a result, many promising players were produced. Above all, through the 2002 World Cup, many players grew and became popular thanks to Hiddink who was the first director of Korean national team. He chose members of national team considering the awareness of player but also more focusing on real abilities for game and without concerns about academic ability or personal relationship. The very members of the national team in 2002 are now very influential in Korean Sports.
Comparing with before the 2002 World Cup, some cultural phenomena happened like a culture of cheering on the street. People usually watched sports game at their house, but these days a lot of people come out, gather and watch the soccer game together on the street like Gwanghwamoon, Cityhall in Seoul. And people care about the soccer game whenever it takes place. Therefore, if there is a soccer game tonight, many people consider that game and try to watch the soccer game as far as possible, and they not only watch the game but enjoy the game with beer or delicious food such as fried chicken and pizza or something like that. This is also a kind of culture related with soccer game born in 2002.

Korea has been one of the winter sports powerhouses and has won many medals in many fields such as short track and speed skating. Therefore, our country and people focused support and attention on these sports. On the other hand, figure skating didn’t get attention and even was not known to the public. About 6 years ago, Kim Yu-na achieved good results at international competition. Since then, figure skating has got attention and has gained popularity. She developed the sport that had been wasteland. In 2010 the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, she won a gold medal by setting a new world record at the world figure skating. It was Korea’s first medal in figure skating in the Winter Olympic. After then, she has accomplished a lot and she was chosen as one of the world’s most influential people. Kim Yu-na broke new ground in figure skating because her influence lead many people to interest in the sport and made national support to the sport. Then, many young children to practice and young talents has been trained.
She accomplished a monumental work in figure skating. She made an unpopular figure skating to gain popularity and improve the sport condition.

What do you imagine that what if I ask you who Korean Bill Gates is?
Do you think who is the most influence person amongst on 20’s and 30’s in Korea now?
I think that people have no hesitation in answering who is ‘Ahn cheol-soo’.

According to the public opinion, Ahn cheol-soo especially popular with the youth. I’d like to talk about Ahn cheol-soo as a game changer now more than ever. Whenever he gaves some opinion which becomes a big issue easily, though he try not to play the meida. As you know well, He has set up an ‘Ahnlab’ which is the first company of curing computer virus, and has created highly effective anti-virus programs at the first time in the world.
Ahn cheol-soo has the support of the general public with his focus and incredible drive, an entrepreneurial spirit, morality and modest attitude.

    Ahn cheol-soo said 3 things which are the most important things for him when he try to take an adventure like below;

    (1)What makes me motivated?
(2)Can I keep trying to do with passion?
(3)Could I offer benefit to people through working with professionality.

He aims to get rid of virus in Korea by presidential election as he handed out free anti-virus software for people who need it.
He is expected that he will strive for economic welfare with all the endeavors to help for patients as a doctor (actually, he was a doctor but he quit the job for R&D of anti-virus vaccine), know-how gaind from the past CEO experiences will be the basis of his new career as a leader of Korea.
He, the first game changer who developed anti-virus vaccine for the first time in Korea, is going to start to change the grossing system of korea as a second game changer.

I’m gonna talk about Jamie Oliver who is a chef from England.

As you know, England is know for terrible food.

And there is no famous food.

However, Jamie is one of the world’s best-loved television personalities and one of Britain’s most famous chefs.

In 2001 Jamie needed a new challenge.

He wanted to give something back to the society, so he decided to open a training restaurant for young people who were not in full time education or employment.

That was “Fifteen restaurant” and it was success.

In 2004, motivated by the poor state of school dinners in UK schools, he went back to school with the aim of educating and motivating the kids and dinner ladies to enjoy cooking and eating healthy, nutritious lunches rather than the processed foods that they were used to.

As a result, the government pledged an extra £280 million to improve the standard of school meals.

In a nutshell, he motivated many people in the world. And he is a role model for everybody.

I would talk about cosmetic surgery. Korea is well known about this surgery. so all of the world’s women come to our country for their beauty. How cosmetic surgery changes our society ? The answer is women’s face. Before the invention of this surgery , people, especially women have their special face. Face represented their character. However because of plastic surgery, all of women’s face becomes similar. Like a androids or robots, now women’s face is pressed by doctor. For this reason , lots of social opinion’s from people are changing between 10 years before and now or 10 years after. First is standard of beauty. Since invention of cosmetic surgery, all of women who got the surgery has same appearance. So when people said about standard of beauty, they said about not appearance but natural mind or mentality . This is ideal world, where the person who got a gorgeous mind is respected . Our society has been changed , especially a view point for person. I think this plastic surgery changed one of social problem that people evaluate one person just their appearance. So I Think It’s Game Changer.

    • May 12, 2012 8:52 pm

      I have a question……
I cannot agree that cosmetic suegery is making a “mind-priority world.”
What if a person doesn’t have enough money to take the surgery?
Isn’t cosmetic surgery a product of severe favorism of appearance?
I understood your point, but it seems to me very much like sophistry.

    • May 12, 2012 8:55 pm

Plus, do you think women do cosmetic surgery, just to be evaluated by their inner beauty?
Your writing just caused me a mental destruction…… 😦

Lately, I have been watching videos from the website ‘Ted’. Few days ago, I watched the speech of Jimmy Wales “Jimmy Wales on the birth of Wikipedia”. I use Wikipedia in a lot of ways. I think almost everyone does. He said “Wikipedia begins with a very radical idea, and that’s for all of us to imagine a world in which every single person on the planets given free access to the sum of all human knowledge” Isn’t it surprising and creative? they are even achieving the idea, actually we are doing. They have only one employee and they just give the chances that whoever internet user can edit the informations. And surprisingly, internet users who want to edit and give some information do it for free. Other remarkable thing is that We have two million total articles across many different languages. He said “But only around one-third of all of our traffic to our webclusters to the English Wikipedia, which is surprising to a lot of people.A lot of people think in a very English-centric way on the Internet, but for us, we’re truly global.” I love this because we can learn English form this website still gaining informations what we need. past encyclopedia or other ways we get information asked us some money and time to seek information. Wikipedia is free and you can find what we need by only typing and clicking. The total monthly cost for Wikipedia’s bandwidth is about 5,000 dollars because those are managed by volunteer system administrators who are online. Wikipedia have changed many streams of seeking information and it will make a lot of changes of our online life and even real life.
i would like to recommend using wikipedia. Once you use it, you will be surprized that how it works and how it is effective. But at last, i just remind you that you need be use the information on Wikipedia selectly and carefully. They said that it’s almost perfect though.

I’d talk about Steve job’s death.
He died in October fifth, 2011. He was almost perfect person in this world. and He also changed world with corporate apple. Steve job’s effort to change life was very vast thing. His attitude for treating life was very distinct.
We have lost a genius, a revolutionary man. Steve was the greatest visionary the world had. Now, the world has lost him. With him, we were one step closer. Now, with his death, we have taken that step back. Steve Jobs was not only a person, but the representation of a whole idea: originality and perfection. Something most of us are far from achieving.Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. Your ideal will not be forgotten.Alberto, in tribute to Steve Paul Jobs.

In 1990s korean music industries were not big and tent to think old fashioned music. This was wrong I think. 90s music was good though the marketing system was bad enough to support it. However, in early 2000s the singer Boa made a huge success in Japan at that time Japan was the biggest market in Asia no one would expect that she could success in there. After that it is now easily found korean singers
not only in Japan but also from other countries including in Europe. She struggled so hard to be a star. With her efforts now the K Pop is becomming huge industry and we should respect what she have done

About one or two years ago, there was a competition about cooking in the TV variety show. At that time, among the comedians, who are attended that show, kyung gyu Lee made very a unique food especially in Korea. It’s common in other countries but in Korea people don’t want to eat the white soup with Ramen. However, the kyung gyu Lee thought specially about the subject of cooking competition and won through the creative thinking. It is making vast income to him and changed the style and market of Ramen.
First, people started to believe about the taste of white soup. Korean usually wants to eat the spicy foods so they would like to choose red foods. Moreover, they even not try to eat white Ramen soup before Kyung gyu Lee’s Ramen. However, after watching TV show, they saw the process of the competition and the scene of professional’s advice about the Ramen. In the result, people wanted to try it. Following this trend many companies made white soup Ramen on their own, and it made new trend about white shop Ramen.
Also, because of the ingredient of Kyung gyu Lee’s Ramen, the price was high than others. Even though the price was so high, purchase quantity was better than others. In the result, other products started to drop their purchase quantity. This trend leads to increase of the Ramen’s price. Still now, the price is improving because of the Kyung gyu Lee’s Ramen. It makes the resource about increasing price in Ramen market.
In conclusion, not only the style but also the price of Ramen changed because of the Kyung gyu Lee’s Ramen. In other words, Kyung gyu Lee is the game changer in Ramen companies market. He made the new trend and many different factors about Ramen.

In 2009, a lot of people in Korea were fanatical about a TV program. Even it was not regular broadcast, viewer’s rating was closely upon 14%. It was amazing rate that Cable TV program could achieve. The program’s name was ‘Superstar K’.
It was an audition program which was similar to foreign famous TV program such as ‘American Idol’, ‘X factor’.
These kinds of survival audition were familiar in US, Europe, but these were unusual in Korea. It was successful. Every Friday night, people were sitting in front of their TV to watch the Superstar-K. This program’s catchphrase ‘you everyone can be a superstar’ made people excited as they are really challenging to the TV show. After that, season 2 and 3 followed. Besides so many other audition programs were on broadcast. Most of them were successful.
Maybe these programs have given to people hope that ordinary people can be a special. People seem getting vicarious satisfaction by watching these programs. From the Superstar-K, audition programs have been sprung up like mushrooms after a rain. Somebody called this phenomenon ‘the audition syndrome’. And producers expect no fail on these programs.
It seems like they are right and It’s clear that these changed the spectrum of broadcasts. But nobody knows how long will it last.

First, I figure it just as the ersatz American Idol, looking so shallow. I knew it was going to be huge considering Korea’s passion for following “trends” and being celebrities and famous. Well, I guess, in some aspects, the audition itself might have given youngsters the false hope again, actually in a bigger scale now, and also provided a narrower view of career variety. Teenagers don’t have dreams these days, and singers are extremely factory-tuned. Sorry for being so pessimistic.

I would say Nintendo Wii was a game changer all over the world. Also, this has changed not only for young but even for adults. Especially, the ad from TV really gave a big impact on most people. Before, if it’s a product it made the viewers think “I want to try that on” or “I want to buy that” but in Nintendo Wii commercial it made the buyer think differently. It really made the buyer think “I want to have a fun JUST like that with my FAMILY”. By starting of a simple commercial, this simply viewed our next door neighbors. As for us, we want to have a perfect family time and this ad showed us how we can with Nintendo Wii. Also, Nintendo Wii basically made the game more realistic and active. Like I said before, from a pre-school kid to 80-years-old granny and play the game together. This “together” it makes a big change in our lives.

Wi-Fi is a game challenger that makes us convenient. Wherever you can see many people use internet using their notebook, smartphone but it was hard to do until LG introduced Wi-Fi phone service in 2007. Surely, there was wireless communication before 2007. However it has not only limited to send lots of data also cost too much expense if people want to use it.

Introduction of Wi-Fi became a catalyst that spread Wireless device like Smartphone and it leads to cost reduction. Moreover Wi-Fi gives us accessibility if there is Wi-Fi router it helps people use fast internet for free.

Considering the fact that Wi-Fi raises the number of smartphone users, we cannot too highly estimated role of Wi-Fi as a game challenger.

I think an application ‘KaKao Talk’ is the game changer.
Before we use this application, we have to pay money per message. For this reason, we didn’t talk with others freely in the past. We send only important things or informations to others except simple chat. However, after the emergence of KaKao Talk, we don’t have to pay for each messages, so we always chat with the KaKao Talk. We feel more close to each other through using KaKao Talk, Also, It’s easier to contact to friends who did not talk for a long time. Furthermore, we can make a group chatting. Me and my friends always talk at there. In addition, we can send pictures and movies for free. We can share our material easily.
Like this, KaKao Talk make lots of differences in our life, so I think the KaKao Talk is the game changer.

I’d like to introduce a game changer in the field of music. Actually, it starts with the development of the Internet. Well, the prevalence of one PC per a household had stricken as the efficiency in office work once, then the Internet, of course, took another importance in every part of daily life. But, ‘hey, this is too general!’ Okay, let me narrow down the topic and show you how the Internet also brought convenience for making music amongst commoners. Well, the older generations of musicians may remember how they worked to compose music was much based on using analogue racks of instruments, which also cost awful lot of money and space. So, the song-making process was wholly depended upon professional musicians who sold songs with commercial viability. However, the later development of composing softwares and Internet made it possible for general public to reach the realm of musical composition, although the majority of routes for getting programs were illegal – as how Koreans describe it, through the “path of darkness.” Softwares like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, Logic, and Pro tools (though some of them only work on Apple) enabled the amateur musicians to record multitrack songs only within a computer, thus the title “home recording studio” came to show mores closely. Another major impact that brought efficiency was the invention of VSTis, or Virtual Studio Technology Instruments. As mentioned above, the sound sources for recording music was much done through analogue racks and synthesizers, but VSTis which are just like other computer software could be downloaded and installed easily, but also effectively provided the sounds of instruments. This meant, yes, you don’t need to buy all those piles of machineries. All you need is a master keyboard to put MIDI data onto your computer, and then uploading proper VSTis instead of hooking up cables to the real instruments. There are a number of online clubs about musical composition on computer and netizens may share their music and knowhow. Oftentimes, the new way of making music doesn’t necessarily connect an amateur to actual being as a professional musician, but it sure broadened the opportunity of having a nice piece of hobby.

One of the greatest game changer in education field is Internet education. Especially, online private academies are quite popular in Korea. Even though some people might say it makes parents spend higher expenses for their kids’ private education, I personally believe that Internet based education system has several benefits such as giving equal opportunities, lower cost, and less time and space constraints.

First of all, Internet education system gives an equal opportunity to take a lesson from popular teacher. Therefore, students who live in rural area can also learn English from native teachers. They can choose to take popular lectures and learn equally as urban students.

In addition, online education cost is a lot lower than offline education system since it records once and replays many times. When students go to some high-end academies which have famous teachers, it costs the earth. However, students can take same lessons at affordable price when they take internet lessons.

Finally, Internet education system does not have any limitation for time and space. High school students in Korea usually do not have enough time to go to several different academies. They even do not have enough time to sleep. However, they can save their time using Internet service. For example, they could listen to a lecture through their pmp players or smart phones in the bus on their way back home.

For these reasons, Internet education system totally changed educational culture and had strong influence on many students.

One of the greatest game changer in the field of the ways of college admission. In 10 years ago, there were only a few way to enter a college; taking the entarance exam, high school scores, or being specialized in sports, dance, and painting. For this reason, high school students, who didn’t have any special talent at that time should have only concetrated on their school works. They just studied mid-term and final exam in high school and studied for the college entarance exam in third-grade in high school. There was no way to be accepted college without focusing on their school studies, some times they got a private lesson from tutor. However, students now have a lot of ways to go university. There are an essay-test, a aptitude test, personality test, and the admission officer system. So, students can choose the way what they are assured of. Also, through these method, many of the students can find their hidden nature talent. That’s why I think the variation of college entarance is the one of the greatest game changer.

The biggest video site ‘Youtube’ was founded in 2005. I would like to say a ripid increase of that site’s users is a game changer that has made ‘Hallyu(Hanryu)’ spread all over the world. It has been developed with the increase of users in the world and diversify of contents, and it plays a role of introducing various cultures to each country. Among the various cultures, Hallyu is a main beneficiary. Large agencies inside the country such as SM, JYP, and YG chose Youtube whose global users are increasing stadily to promote their artists. It was successful strategy. With the dramatical growth of Hallyu’s popularity, the media all over the world started to pay attention to it. Moreover, Youtube made K-pop channel, and it was the first time to designate the specific country’s music genre as a seperate genre. In addition, Korean idol pop stars’-Girls’generation, Woder Girls, 2NE1, Super Junior, and so on- video got millions of hits. In other words, Hallyu which got attention only in Asia is spreading rapidly to the western countries such as France, US, and Austrailia.

Beginning from K-pop, K-drama is now getting popularity through Youtube. A number of K-pop fans all over the world have started to find their favorite pop-star’s works, and they finally find the works through Youtube. The drama ‘Playful Kiss’ is the representative example of that. Famous Hallyu star Kim Hyuns Joong appeared on Playful Kiss, and this drama gained huge love from Overseas fans although the drama was failed in Korea.

Ensuring the promoting effect of various contents, Youtube has made exportation of the contents more actively. Hallyu is growing its power by Youtube, and Youtube plays the important role to develop overall Korean cultural industry.

Before to start writing, i’m really sorry about being late. I know it is already late, I put this assignment on here.

I would like to talk about ‘Titanic’. I think everybody know the ‘Titanic’ because it is one of the most famous movie that people ever had. It is made from a real story. At 1912, April 15th, Titanic that went from Southhampton in UK from Newyork in US crashed with iceberg, so it sank. This made 1,513 sacrificer and is the biggest marine accident in the world. The movie is about the love story between two different class man and woman based on the real accident story. Before the movie came out, lots of movie experts said the movie will be failed to be succeed because it has too long to be played. It has about 3 hours long time.
However, after the movie came out, it became the best movie in the movie history. It had the most numerous number of audience. It made people feel the sadness of sacrificer from that accident again. Although it had too long time, it gave a big impression to audience. It touches people’s heart, and people love this movie even now. I think it is the most important thing to live with the heart, I mean it affects us for the feeling. The movie with 3D came out nowadays ,so it affects our lives.

In recent years, ‘Hallyu’ is the biggest event in Asia.
At the beginning from Japan, Korean wave is sweeping Asia.
Even the western press reports widely on the korean wave. They are showing that korean wave is not a flash in the pan. The Korean wave has sparked a fad for Korean movies, dramas and pop music. In addition to entertainments, korean fashion, food and even way of make-up are also becoming popular. I think these social phenomenons are positive. Through various media contents, hallyu has taken the lead in exporting korea’s culture. Furthermore, hallyu is presenting a good image of korea to another countries. However, carelessness is our greatest enemy. We always need to worry that Hallyu would be dying whenever. I hope Korean wave last for a long time if possible.
