Looking Closer at Art

May 21, 2013

Last week Todd asked you to choose your favourite film and comment on it. Well, I’d like to continue looking at films, but also books, drama, poetry, or art even, and I would like to analyse things a little more closely.

Choose a film, book, play, or work of art (include a link to the cover of the book, or artwork, or even a youtube link to a scene from the film) which you consider important. It doesn’t have to be your favourite, or the best thing you’ve ever seen or heard, but it should be something which you think everyone else should appreciate.

Your job is to explain to people what this, and it is important.

Here are some themes and issues which you could choose, although if you want to suggest something else please do:

  • Gender
  • Family
  • Identity
  • Love
  • The role of family
  • The changes in modern/contemporary society
  • Government control/oppresion
  • Death
  • Struggle
  • Freedom

Remember, include the name of the piece, the author/director and main actors/artists name at the start.

Good luck!

    ‘The Great Gatsby’
    The author: F.Scott Fitzgerald
The main characters: Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Nick Carraway

‘The Great Gatsby’ is the American novel published in 1925. This book is one of the greatest works of American literature, and many people have read it. In addition, it describes 1920s’ American society very well, so readers can understand of American culture at that time by reading it. Recently, most people are interested in this book because of the movie, ‘The Great Gatsby’. This movie was filmed based on the book, and its content is almost same as the book.
This novel is deeply related to ‘LOVE’. The main character of this novel is a rich man whose name is ‘Jay Gatsby’. He was so rich and famous so all the people knew his name and were curious about him. Also, he hold huge and fabulous parties every week, and all the people enjoyed them.
In the past, Gatsby fell in love with a girl whose name was Daisy, and she felt the same feeling with Gatsby. However, they were apart because of the war and could not meet for years. After the war, Gatsby tried to meet Daisy, but he found out the she was already married to another guy. Then Gastby bought his house near daisy’s and kept trying to meet her. Finally, Gatsby could meet Daisy with the help of her cousin, who was one of the Gatsby’s neighbor. It seemed that they fell in love with each other again, but Daisy actually couldn’t say to her husband that she never loved him. Gatsby waited for Daisy to come back to himself, but Daisy didn’t. Later, Nick found out that Gatsby bought the huge house and hold parties because he wanted to meet Daisy. Unfortunately, Gatsby was killed by someone who thought that Gatsby was the murderer of his wife.
Gatsby’s life could be stable, but he actually forgave everything because of his love. I think that this novel shows that how great love is and can change one man’s life. Even though Gatsby couldn’t live with Daisy, he kept his love with her forever, and it made the Gatsby be the great man in Nick’s view. I think that the reason why many people still read and like it is that it describes one guy’s life influenced by his love very well.

(A poignant moment in the last scene/ the film version)

    「Romeo & Juliet」
    The author- William Shakespeare
The main characters- Romeo Montague, Juliet Capulet.

Romeo & Juliet is one of the four greatest tragedies by Shakespeare in Western history. Its plot is based on the play, and it has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera. I believe everybody must have heard about this famous love story once. Studying original text of the play version in class, I thought that impressive lines for true love and beautiful scenes are really awesome.
It concerns the fate of two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. They fall deeply in love, but their families were bitter enemies. Since they would do anything to be together, nobody can stop their love. However, in the end, Romeo see Juliet sleeping and think that she is dead, so he kills himself. Juliet wakes up and also commit suicide by Romeo’s knife. What a tragedy!
Could you risk your life for your loved one? It could become a valuable experience to love someone like the main characters struggling to keep their love. It is clear that Romeo & Juliet was ended in tragedy, but their passionate love deserves much praise. When they all die, it broke my heart to feel that the ending is rather breathtakingly beautiful. Nothing else can be better than this story. That is why this sorrowful but beautiful work is loved by people all over the world.

The director =Lana Wachowski & Andy Wachowski
    The main character = Neo
The main actor = Keanu Reeves

This scene is very popular scene from the movie. This is the moment to choose whether to stay in comfortable, but suspicious fake reality, or to get out of the fake one and know the harsh truth.

I think this is a common problem most educated people face at least once in their lives.
When one is young, everything looks nice, the world seems to be a happy place to be.
(except for the special cases where kids are abused and violated). However, as one grows up, he or she gradually realizes that the world is not as kind as one though it was.
People come to choose from 2 choices. Ignore what is seen, and fake oneself and act like the world is still happy place, OR, one chooses to fight against unfair reality.

This scene is very alike in the respect of choosing their attitudes towards the world.
In the movie, Neo chooses to know the truth, and fight against the world. However, on the other hand, another character named, cypher, chooses to go back to the matrix, the world that is more comfortable, but fake.

I think the director wanted to say that even though the reality may be harsh, people should try to know the truth, and overcome the hard situation.
For unmature people like me, it is really hard to choose any sides. However, this is very important matter for people who live in the world where lies and hypocrisy prevails.

The film name is “The Sound of Music(1965)” and the director is Robert Wise. The main actor’s name is Julia Elizabeth Wells who acted as Maria. One of the scene in the film I chose was Maria teaches the ‘Do-Re-Mi Song’ to the 7 children. I thought this scene is quite important since I believe it really reflects the film’s theme ‘The Sound of Music’ well. It is the very first time the 7 children learn the notes and from it, they could sing more various songs. So I think this picture give the 7 children to get to know what the sound of music is. Also, it is my favorite scene in the film. I used to listen the song when I was elementary student and I could remind my primary rememberance through it. Overall, I think it is the great masterpiece and the song would remain forever in my mind.

    The movie title
This movie is released last year. It could not bring up a big hit, but I think the movie deal with diverse themes. The time setting is in 1980. Therefore the movie uses cloths, indoor settings, equipment and hairstyles in 1980.
I’ll briefly introduce the plot of this movie. Dae-O is a main character. He works in chinese-delivery restaurant, and usually deliver some food. Everyday, he delivers black-bean-sauce noodles for one girl, whose name is Ye-lin, who lived in a dormitory. He falls in love with her. But she doesn’t know about his love. To achieve his love, he goes to her school and waits for her. Actually, she was a girl who prepares for democracy revolution. He pretends to a revolutionist and tries to be close with Ye-lin. Specifically, audience can see many comedy happenings and situations by the process of a revolutionary movement. However, Ye-lin already has a boy friend who is leader of that movement. Finally, the student movement is blocked by police and the leader must be arrested. At that time, Dae-O said to police that he is the leader who is professional revolutionist and lead that movement instead of Ye-lin’s boy friend. He is arrested but he is very happy at last scene, because he sacrifice for the girl who he loves.
I think the story is dealing with many themes, like “The changes in modern/contemporary society”, “Government control”, “Struggle for freedom” and “love”. Audience can observe the changes in modern and contemporary society not only for surface backgrounds (environments) but also for democratic backgrounds. For me, it was shocking that government cruelly used violence and prohibit many activities that is available in now. Also, they struggle for freedom, freedom of democracy, speech and sovereignty, so it gave me insight. Lastly, the love that main character shows also gives me good feeling of that movie. I was sad when he was arrested, but also felt subtle when he expresses his happiness at last scene.
This is short preview for the movie.

    Main actor: T.J. Thyne

This is one of short films. I would like everyone who is feeling down to watch it, because it is so great for lifting the spirits.
This still makes me smile, However down I’m feeling, I always finish watching this with a smile upon my face. This has saved my life on multiple occasions and I am so thankful. it teaches how important validation is for each and every person on this planet.
So if you really want to bond with someone or make a person feel good, doesn’t it make perfect sense to acknowledge that person in some way? Give someone a compliment and make them smile today. Or say… ‘I see you. I hear you. And what you say matters to me.’ Oh and remember, YOU are AWESOME!

    ‘I Am Sam’
    Director: Jessie Nelson
    Theme: Love(family)

This movie is one of my favorite movies. I think almost people know this movie. This movie is the story about love between father and daughter. ‘Sean Penn’ and ‘Dakota Fanning’ appeared in this movie. Sean Penn is the father, called ‘Sam’ and Dakota Fanning is daughter, called ‘Lucy’. Sam is an adult with intellectual disabilities. Although his I.Q was the same as child, 7 years old, his love for Lucy was not different compared to other parents. Then one day, Lucy realized that her father was different from other fathers and she told her friend that she was an adopted child. Because of she said, other people think that Sam had no abilities to take care of Lucy. So Sam was apart from his daughter, Lucy by force. Lucy was adopted to other parents. In order to regain her, Sam started to look for a lawyer and fought with them in the court.
I think parents’s love to their children is the greatest love. Parents do not any reward for their love and parents’s love never change. I can feel the greatest love of parents through this movie.

‘The descent’ is a scary movie and thriller. The reason why I like thriller is I can relieve my stress and feel thrilled, but the most important reason is I can experience nameless horrors by watching the scenes that can’t be experienced in real life. We cannot feel the emotion in normal situations. By watching horror movies, we can feel the emotions that have been hidden in our mind.

The scene which starts at 1’10” in the attached video is the best scence in the movie ‘The descent’, I think. The scene is about the first meeting of the main characters and monsters. When I watched the scene in first, I was really nervous because I was feeling same emotions like the main characters.

Actually, I think this indirect experience related emotions is very important because modern people are used to veiling their emotions, so they are poor at showing their true feelings. That’s why modern people are suffering from illness of the mind. Although I wasn’t in the moive, my mind and emotions was in there. Although quite a few people don’t like the horror movie and thrillers, I ask them to know they can experience extreme fear and express their hidden feelings by crying and screaming through the movies.

    Title: Notting Hill (1999)
    Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
    Director: Roger Michell
    Writer: Richard Curtis
Stars: Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, Richard McCabe
Outline: The life of a simple bookshop owner changes when he meets the most famous film star in the world.

I think that almost people already know about this movie. The movie is very famous as romantic comedy. ‘Notting hill’ is the title of this movie and the kind of places in British. Julia Roberts (heroine) and Hugh Grant (hero) met by some chance and became to fall for each other in movie.
I recommend to people who want to soften a hardened heart. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are both very attractive. If you watched this, you would be a couple.
Attached video is She(Elvis Costello) from Notting hill, O.S.T. This music is also famous and it make a little more emotional resonance, I think.

Title of the artwork: Execution of the Defenders of Madrid, 3rd May, 1808
Name of the artist: Francisco Goya
    Theme: Government Oppresion/Freedom/Death/Struggle

Though this work is not my favorite one, I think it’s worth to introduce this painting because it reminds me of Japanese invasion and colonial rule. Both Korea and Spain are amazingly resemble each other. They are peninsular state. The people of both countries are kind, passionate. The personal network is one of most important value. However, above all, both countries have history of innumerable invasion and experience of colonial rule.

About 400 years ago, Japan was united by a shogun, Toyotomi Hideyosi. He thought that the more peace lasted, the more his subordinates and forces had complaints, disunited and disputed each other. He scapegoated China and requested to Korea Japanese forces’ permission to enter the Korean territory to conquer China. Considering the intimate relationship between Korea and China, it was unacceptable. Korea denied it, the war begun in 1592.

After 200 years later, Something similar happened in Spain. Napoleon I requested permission of their military forces being stationed in Spain for expedition to Portugal and suggested joint rule of it. Charles IV, the king of Spain, accepted it. At first, there was no opposition, no conflict between French forces and citizens. But, suddenly, French forces occupied Madrid, and Joseph Bonaparte, a brother of Napoleon I was crowned. The citizens of Madrid started a riot against French army. French soldiers were sent to suppress the riot, they killed thousands of innocent people.

When Goya painted it, he chose the real incident to describe the violence of human. In this painting, there is sharp contrast. The citizens of Madrid are on the left side of the painting, French soldiers are on the right side. The left side is more brighter than the right side. One man wearing white clothes opens his arms while French soldiers with dark uniform are pointing their rifle at the citizens. I think Goya tried to describe the innocence of victims and bloody cruelness of French soldiers by contrast of color.

Recently, there is a rightward shift in Japan. Japanese prime minister has made a few remarks to distort history and many Korean including myself, were pissed off. When I saw this painting and learned the meaning for the first time, I realized that I should care the history of my country rather than swear them. I think it’s worth to appreciate this artwork.

    “Les Miserables”(1998)
    The director : Bille August
The main characters: Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson), Javert (Geoffrey Rush), Fantine (Uma Thurman), Cosette (Claire Danes).

You are maybe unfamiliar with this video clip “Les Miserables” i attached because of its different version from recent huge box-office hit movie “Les Miserables”.
Although the film of Hugh Jackman in December 2012 has many dramatic scenes and lines, the reason why I particularly choose this old version is due to this last scene in which Javert has just died. Javert was an inspector who ran after the criminal Jean Valjean for many years to judge him by the law. However, this man became indebted to Jean Valjean who spared his life in spite of a lifelong enemy.
So, in this last part when Javert caught Jean Valjean at last, he set him free and took his own life by falling down into the water with handcuff on his hand.
It seems to be in vain or could be considered as happy ending in Jean Valjean’s. However, What we have to note here is Javert’s “righteousness” and “forgiveness” towards Jean Valjean. He could satisfy the both side as a police inspector and an individual person at the same time since he atoned for Jean Valjean’s indelible sin with suicide. So It was remarkable and very touching scene to me. I was so anxious about the chase scene, but It’s a good thing the trustful mind of Jean Valjean could be transmitted into Javert in the end. In other words, this relationship in the movie shows how people do humanly love each other.

The name of the piece: Mamma Mia
    Director: Phyllida Lloyd
Writers: Catherine Johnson (screenplay), Catherine Johnson (musical book)
Main actors: Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan|

The main story is Sophie’s wedding. Sophie, actress is Amanda Seyfried, didn’t have father. She just have mom. So, she wanted to be married with her boyfriend and have family. But she really wondered her father. And she invited three men who were thought as her father in diary of her mother at her wedding. Next three men really come at her house. Her mother knew the fact and is surprised. At last she didn’t know her father of three men. But Sam, actor is Pierce Brosnan, who is one of the men fall in love again with her mother and her mother was married with Sam instead of her wedding. She thought about wedding again and leaved her house to find out her dream with her boyfriend, Petros.

When I watched the movie, I felt deep love between families, in the movie three men didn’t accept Sophie at first, but all of them thought her as their daughter at last scene. And they take care of her by themselves. I felt really impressive and I could see their deep love in the movie. So, a big love between her families is the reason .

the name of the piece: Norwegian wood (film)
      the director: Tran Anh Hung
main actors: Ken’ichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara
      Theme: Death, Identity, Love
Toru Watanabe is a quiet and serious young man in 1960s Tokyo whose personal life is in tumult, having lost his best friend Kizuki after he inexplicably commits suicide. Seeking an escape, Toru enters a university in Tokyo. By chance, during a walk in a park, Toru meets Kizuki’s ex-girlfriend Naoko, and they grow close. Naoko is devastated by the loss of Kizuki and spirals into a deep depression.
After Naoko’s 20th birthday, which she shares with Toru, she withdraws from the world and leaves for a sanitarium in a remote forest setting near Kyoto. Toru is anguished by the situation, as he still has deep feelings for Naoko, but she is unable to reciprocate. He also lives with the influence of death everywhere, while Naoko feels as if some integral part of her has been permanently lost. He continues with his studies, and during the spring semester meets an attractive girl and fellow student Midori, who is everything that Naoko isn’t — outgoing, vivacious, and supremely self-confident. The story then follows Toru as he is torn between the two women in his life, and choosing between his past and his future.

My opinion: This film’s original is Haruki Murakami’s novel of the same name. Superficially, it presents love story and confusion of main character, Watanabe and story development take the pace of melodrama and tragedy. After watched ‘Norwegian wood’, I was confused because I did neither know what the film is about nor how to comprehend all the plots and suggestions in the movie even if I read the original novel written by Haruki. However, among chaos, first thing I concentrated on was the reason two main character, Watanabe and Naoko, are attracted each other. I think it is a desperate movement to fill empty space in their mind made by Kizuki who was closest friend of Watanabe and also ex-boyfriend of Naoko and commited suicide unexpectedly. They are trying to forget injuries by meeting and sharing each other. The important point is that people indentify themselves by others, in this film, a friend. That is why main characters are feeling frustration after friend’s death and eager to indentify their presence by satisfyiing hollow space in the mind. It is not wholely different from us who live in the age of frustration and absence.

Have you ever imagine that you are given a few months? What do you want to do? And what do you think of it? The main plot follows two terminally ill men on their road trip with a wish list of things to do before they “kick the bucket”.
Blue-collar mechanic Cater Chambers and billionaire hospital magnate Edward Cole meet for the first time in the hospital after both have been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Cater begins writing a “bucket list” for all, or things to do before he “kick the bucket”. After hearing he has than a year, Cater discards list. Edward finds it the next morning and urges Cater to do everything on the list, and offers to finance the trip for the both of them. Then Cater and Edward begin an around-the-world vacation.
Before they know that they can live only few months, nobody can judge their life and there are no standard that can evaluate them. However, they live successful life in a regard to happiness of life at least. This movie gives many lessons about family, death, life, dream and so on. If you feel pressure of living, I recommend watching it and write own your bucket list!

    Title of drama: Ugly Betty
    Genre : comedy-drama
    Created by: Fernando Gaitán
    Main actor: America Ferrera(Betty)

This is a famous U.S. drama which deals with Betty’s life. Betty is a smart but ugly girl who graduated from well-known university. Actually, she wanted to be a journalist but she got a job as a secretary for chief editor of fashion magazine. It’s very similar situation with “Devil wears Prada”. The differences from the movie are, Betty is ugly and her boss, Daniel, is incompetent.
I want to recommend this drama for several reasons. This drama give us a message about Lookism(or appearance-oriented society). Betty works at fashion magazine which is full of Lookism. Everyone is judged and judge by one’s appearance, fashion, and body. In that place, Betty is treated as an odd and strange person because she is ugly, fat and not fashionable. However Betty doesn’t care others other’s view and tries to keep her values and love herself. As time passed, people noticed Betty’s attractiveness. You can feel how lovely she is. Maybe that is inner beauty which we really have to pursue.
Secondly, this drama reflects well the modern U.S. society. Do you know “Friends” and “Sex and the city”? These dramas are also famous and considered as dramas that reflects modern U.S. city life. But their main actors were all white people. Although U.S. is full of variety of races and especially NY is one of the multi-ethnic societies, there are no black and Asian main characters. On the other hand, In Ugly Betty, many people from several ethnic groups appeared. First of all, Betty is a Mexican-American. One of the episodes dealt with difficulties of life as an unpermitted immigrant because Betty’s father didn’t have a permanent residency. And in the company, one of the bosses is an African-American and Betty’s best friend is from Scotland. I think it described well the modern America city life.

    Title : Bonni and Clyde(1967)
    Director : Authur Penn
Main actors : Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway

The film is fictional film but based on a true characters and a true story. The film is about the two notorious young gangsters of the 1930’s. Bonnie and Clyde started to rob banks and killed people. After several gun fights, Bonnie and Clyde eventually got killed by police. This film shows us “love”, “death”, “desire” and human’s “life”. Bonnie and Clyde had a same desire. They had a strong desire to be a famous robber and wealthy. So, they became one team and kept going to achieve their goal. However, the method was not good. Robbery and Murder were the things stepping over the bounds. Because of their flaw, mistake and wrong decision drive them into catastrophe. Our life is same with Bonnie and Clyde’s. If we are greedy and excessively desire something, we will be destroyed by ourselves. I think moderation is the moral of this tragic film.

The name of the piece: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
    Director: Hosoda Mamoru
    Writers: Okudera Satoko
Main actors: Naka Riisa, Takuya Ishida

I will introduce a movie that is the most memorable and interesting one I’ve ever seen. The title of the movie is “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”.
Let me tell you the story of the movie briefly. There was a common girl who acquires a magic ability of running against the time by chance while enjoying her school life. Whenever she uses the ability, people around her get damaged because of her. So, she makes up her mind to live a normal life after using the ability till the limited number. However, there will be an accident in which her friend will lose her life at that moment. However as the limited number was over, she isn’t able to do anything to save her friend’s life. The person who stops her ability is the friend of hers. As her friend disappears, saying she came from the future world, the number that she can use the ability extends one more time.
After returning the time to the first, she tells her friend everything and promises her to meet again in the future world. At the end of the movie, she parts with her friend. This is the whole story of the movie.
Though this movie was released a long time ago, I still remember lots of things from the movie. At the last moment, when she turns the time back, I was impressed by the original sound track in the movie. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I recommend you to see it.

Film name: The Legend of Ip Man
    Main Character: Donnie Yen Ji-Dan
    Genre: Action&Drama
    Setting: the 1930s, China

Ip Man fights with 10 Japanese soldiers and defeats them in this scene. Someone who doesn’t like action scenes will be impressed by this scene, not because the fight of the scene is wonderful but because the final word of Ip Man – “I am just Chinese.” – is impressive. Before the scene, a Chinese martial artist fought with 3 Japanese soldiers for rice, but he was defeated by them and killed by a gun. Ip Man was furious and defeats 10 Japanese soldiers, not for rice but for a revenge of the man who was killed and a pride of Chinese people. The important point of the scene is that the bravery and patriotism of Ip Man influence on Chinese people. His final word means, not that only can he defeat Japanese soldiers because he is hero, but that every Chinese people can defeat Japanese soldiers. What Ip Man does is eventually what awakens a pride of Chinese people. He was a true hero and patriot for China.

    – Modern Family
    directed by Jason Winner
actors : Ariel Winter, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Sarah Hyland, Ed
O’Neill, Rico Rodriguez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson

I choose American comedy drama “Modern Family” which shows daily life of modern American family and this is the short story line of “Modern Family”
Jay Pritchett sits at the head of a large and unconventional family. Now in his second marriage to his gorgeous young wife, Gloria, Jay has been given something of a second chance. Still, old habits are hard to break, and it’s trial by fire as he tries to adapt to life with the same passion and vigor that Gloria exhibits, which are matched by her precocious 12-year-old son, Manny. There are some culture clashes, a few misunderstandings, but also plenty of sweet victories along the way. Jay’s grown daughter, Claire, and her husband, Phil, are the proud parents of three kids with whom they want that open, healthy, honest relationship. It’s not always easy, especially when you have Haley, a teenage daughter who’s growing up a little fast, Alex, a too-smart-for-her-own-good middle daughter and Luke, a scatterbrained boy. Add to this that Phil is just a big kid himself, even if he does always have the best intentions.
I really like this drama because it is not just funny but gives moral lessons which can be related our daily life that can occurs from our family. Every actor and actress has different characteristics and all of them are really charming! Episodes shows conflicts or various situation though our lives but after all, it always come to happy ending and heart-warming story. If someone finds funny and warm hearted drama, I definitely recommend “Modern Family”

Don’t you think it is good that we can read someone’s dream and thought. It can be possible in ‘Inception’I am sure that many of you already watched this movie and considered it is the best for you guys. ‘Inception’ is also one of my favorite movies which I’ve ever watched.

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief who can steal someone’s idea trespassing their dream. He is asked to put an information which is considered an impossible task.

Most impressive scene in “Inception” is the last scene of the movie. If it is a reality, a totem will be stopped. but if it is a dream, it will be continued. After finishing the last task, Cobb had a good time with his family. He wanted to check he was in a reality or not, he spined the totem.
But as you can see, director doesn’t show us that totem will be stop or not. It is an open closure. The end of the story is open and leaves you to come up with an end of your own. I hope that Cobb is in a reality.

Few days ago, I saw one movie by chance flicking through the channels in my house. The movie contains somewhat light contents, but I think that it delivered its intended message to audiences very exactly. The movei title is ‘shallow hal’ and in our country, it is known as ‘내겐 너무 가벼운 그녀’.
A short summary of movie is that Hal is a playboy and he is always concerned with only women`s appearance. He really likes only beautiful women who have a great figure. Also he judges people by the way they look, so the movie title is ” Shallow Hal”. One day in an elevator, he meets one guy who is famous for hypnotism. By his hypnosis, hal just can see inner beauty not out looking when he meets someone. He eventually fell in love with one women who is not beautiful but more beautiful on the inside.
As you know, lookism is rampant in our society so lots of Korean children as young as 10years are ready targets for the plastic surgery surgeons. After I saw this movie, I thought about what is inner beauty. Just kind? or smart? I don’t know exactly. But one thing I realized is that DON’T be like hal. And someday, I want to listen that your inner side is much more beautiful!

    The film title is ‘Braveheart’
    Director : Mel Gibson
Main Director : Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau
    Theme : Freedom

It may be well known movie around the world. Braveheart was awarded in five fileds at the 68th annual Academy Awards. The background of the film is the end of the 13th century in the island of Great Britain. At that time, England tried to control and oppress Scotland after death of a king of Scotland. The main chacter, William Wallace lost his family and lover by England’s tyranny. Because of this, he struggled to England for freedom of Scotland, his country and people.
One important thing makes the film great is spectacle battle scene. Unlike current wars, battle scenes have serried ranks of soldiers that seem to be very crowded and exciting. Futhermore, Wallace’s leadership stands out in battles. He and his soldiers fight fiercely for obtaining freedom of Scotland. However, finally, betrayal of Scottish nobles, he is captuerd and sent to London to be publicly executed, The moment he is going to die, he shouts ‘Freedom!’. This is famous and reamrkable line of this movie.
The film shows us conflicts among different nations which are united in one Kingdom nowadays. Usually, conflicts still exist and they sometimes cause problems based on historical events among them. Also, struggle and fight of Wallace and his solider against England provide us exciting scenes.

    the author: 신경숙

    theme: family. love

The book is very impressive for me. The story of the book is that one family lost their mother in the subway station. After they lost mother, they strived to find mother but they could not find mothers over the one weekend. The daughter, son perceived existence of their mother largely. In this book, the author want to tell mother’s existence is very precious and mother’s sacrifice and love to her sons and daughters is very enormous. After I read this book, I dropped tears too much and think deeply my mother’s love and sacrifice. I regretted my behavior to my mother. I always get angry to my mother but my mother always love me and understand my behavior. However, after I read this book impressively, I feel my mother’s love and sacrifice and think that it is not too late to be dutiful to my parents. For this reason, I think this book is very important, so I hope to recommend this book to my classmates. This book give our to perceive that existence of mother is very precious.

    I am sam
    Director : Jessie Nelson
Main actors : Sean Penn, Dakota Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianne Wiest
All people would see this film, and they might be moved by enthusiastic performance of actors. This film is about the father’s love. As a devoted father, Sam (performed by Sean Penn) who fights for the right to raise his daughter is showing us the essential of father’s instinctive love.

Sam is a character who has an intellectual disability character. So, most people who can’t understand his love for daughter try to send Lucy (Performed by Dakota Fanning) to ordinary family. However, Sam who never waives his right is the most wonderful father of the world though he is undergoing intellectual disability.

The love for his 7 year old daughter is evident in many sweet scenes. In the beginning, Sam awake from his sleep because of daughter’s crying and he tries to put her to comfortable sleep. Audiences would realize that the disability isn’t related to the love.
And at the last scene, finally Sam gets the right to raise his daughter and defeats prejudice that disabled person couldn’t raise one’s child.

Dakota Fanning playing Sam’s daughter appears to be gifted. At the scene that she screaming “I wouldn’t want any other Daddy but him” to people who are going to take Lucy from Sam, I was completely immersed in the emotion of love expressed by the two superb actors.
This movie gives us when we love the important thing is a love itself, not an ability.

    Language Gibberish

This is short movie from Pixar.
I saw this before watching ‘Brave’ in the theater.
There are three people on the boat, grand father and father and son.
Grand father and father love their son so they want son to be like them. Grand father want son to wear hat up-way but father want downway. Son tries to do what grand father does and what father do. When it gets dark, the moon comes up. Their work is cleaning up full moon to make the sickle moon. The full moon is full of shining stars. While cleaning up, son doesn’t know what tool to use for himself because grand father suggest the bloom but father farming tool. Suddenly the big star falls from sky and gets stuck in the ground. Grand father and father couldn’t do anything with that but son climbs up to the big star and strikes it with hammer. That big star scatters with hundres of shining stars.
After that son finds his own identity, not from grand father and father. His hat is backward and his tool is different from his grand father and father.
I think this is really good art work. The idea that shows how the moon changes its shape from full moon to the sickle moon is really brilliant and how son finds his identity is short but impact. Most thing I like in this movie is the color of it. It is really beautiful.

I`d like to tell you the last battle scene in ‘Frontier’. South and North Koreas arrived at a cease-fire agreement. However, before its effect started, the two Koreas decided to fight to occupy more territory. The soldiers of the two thought that they did not have to fight any more and felt happy, but they should engage in the last battle. In the battle, almost two Koreas` soldiers died. It is very tragic ending. I think the director of this film might want to show audiences the pain and tragedy of Korean War. This war resulted in the many people`s death and separated families. Thus, this film, especially this scene, can remind audiences of the tragedy. It also gives us a lesson to have an interest about the history and try to solve the problem.

    “Eat Pray Love” (2010)
    Director:Ryan Murphy
Writers:Ryan Murphy (screenplay), Jennifer Salt (screenplay), 1 more credit »
Stars:Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, Richard Jenkins | See full cast and crew

We are living with so much studies, works and other things.
So we often forget why we live in the world, how we get happiness and
what is the most important thing.

The movie “Eat,Pray,Love” gives us the main answers about this questions. As you can assume in the title,it is saying that by eating, praying and loving we can pursue happiness in our life.

At the beginning of the movie, the main actress got tired of a relationship between she and her husband. For her, marrige was just a social rule that surpresses her freedom, happiness.

So she divorced and went to Italy, where a lot of delicious food is.
There, she learned to be satisfied with a flavor of delicious food.
After, she went to India and she learned to pray to calm down her emotion and find herself.
Finally, she went to Volley. Even though she could learn the improtance of eating, praying, she was not happy enough. She concetrated on praying but still felt unsatisfied.
However, in Volley she happened to find a nice guy and fell in love with him. She finally became satisfied with her life, full of happiness.

    How about our life?

We (especially women) often surpress our appetitie and deny eating delicous food such as pizza, pasta, meat. It is good not to eat much, but nowadays, many of women are too thin because they take care of other’s attention to them too much. However, this movie suggests eating is very important thing and we can enjoy eating for our happiness!

Also, because of a lot of works, many people cannot think of their own emotions and minds. But this movie is saying that by praying, meditating and concentrating on our mind, we can relax and calm down.

Finally, this movie makes an emphasis on ‘love’. It symbolizes a mental factor is so important thing for happy life and showing ‘love’ makes us so happy!!

Maybe these things might be so simple,”Eat,Pray,Love”.
However, maintaining these things in our mind and pursuing them is more important for our happiness! ^^

    Theme : Death

    The Starry Night
    – Vincent Van Gogh

Van Goh painted the sky in the night that seen through his window in nursing home. However, actually he mixed the scenary of the village that he spent his youth, and a place maned ‘Saint Rémy’. When we see the work, it’s rather lonely and depressed than calm or beautiful. This is because it represents Gogh’s inner side. For a year right before he died, he worked on the painting while he struggling with mental illness. The cypress tree on the paining traditionally is a symbol of the tomb, death, and sorrow. The orange-colored moon represents both the sun and the moon, and shining stars show Gogh’s feeling about the death drawn to himself. Analysis upon this is devided into two ways. The first one says that Gogh didn’t think his death unlucky and sad and considered it as the stars in the sky. The other one says the stars in the painting shining in the sky but they don’t shine on Saint Rémy and Cypress tree. Therefore it means he had many fear of the death.

I would like to choose the poet. I read this poet from one of my book. when I read this poet first, I was so impressed with this. the writter is mary R. Hartman.

the title is: Life is made up of little things.

Life is made up of little things

    no great sacrifice of duty.

but smiles and many a cheerful word

fill up our lives with beauty.

The heartaches, as they come and go

    are but blessings in disgises,

for time will trun the pages o`er

    and snow us great surprises.

I like this poet a lot because I think it makes me feel thank to the little things I have.
we do not know how important the little things we have. but this poet indicates the beauty of little things that compose our life. and this also encourage to be consoled when I suffered from something hard in my life. so I use to read this poet when I feel difficulties to something. and I re- decide to get through all the difficulties I have. because I belive the last part of the poet. I belive that I can make great surprises if I pass the hardships I faced.

    Film name: 신세계
    The director: Park Hoon-jungMain
    actors: Choi Min-sik Hwang, Jeong-min, Lee Jung-jae

I will introduce a movie that is the most memorable and interesting one recently.
Park Hoon-jung’s New World a large truck barrels down an empty street and crashes into a passing car. This single incident throws the inner workings of the Goldmoon crime syndicate into chaos, since the powerful boss of the group had been sitting in the car’s back seat. Hierarchies and power relations which had formerly been stable are now suddenly in flux.
A conflict seems likely between the gang’s unpredictable
Korea has no shortage of gangster movies. There are gangster comedies, gangster romances, gangster coming-of-age dramas, gangster horror, and run-of-the-mill gangster films about well-intentioned young men who get pulled into crime and end up in the midst of ugly gang battles. Despite the diverse settings and variations in tone that you see among this group of films, they are all essentially melodramatic in the sense that we are made to identify with one or two victim-heroes who are up against forces much stronger than they are. Sometimes they win and sometimes they lose, but in the course of fighting their struggle, their inner goodness or sense of honor is revealed to the audience.I particularly enthused by the performances of the lead actors.

When we think about ‘changing somebody’s life’, we tend to think that we need to be very influential people to do that. However, after watching the movie ‘Seven Pounds’, I realised that we can change other people’s life in so many ways that we could not think of, and we do not have to be a man with a lot of fortune or knowledge.
The movie, Seven Pounds, is directed by Gabriele Muccino in 2008. The main character decides to change seven people’s life, and he begins to meet many people in order to choose who he is going to help.
Without knowing the storyline before watching the movie, what I found out later and got a huge shock is that the main character uses his body organs to help those people. In order to keep his organs as fresh as possible, he chooses to kill himself with the electricity of jellyfish. Since I did not expect the main character’s suicide, it came to me as a great shock.
The next thing that came to my mind simultaneously was a question. ‘Would I be able to sacrefice myself to help others, even if it is not the way to give up my life’. And another question. ‘Is killing oneself be justified for saving many others’ lives?’.
Before watching this movie, I always believed that people who kill themselves are making the biggest sin and such act was ununderstandable. However, watching the movie, I could start to undertand one’s decision of death, and the decision to allocate the organs for saving others’ lives whom he thought desire the most was such a deep thinking.
I would not give up my life because I will always try to fight the difficulties and agonies that might encounter me, but if I am put in a situation when I need to die, I would definitely like to use every bits of me to save other people, like the main character did.
This movie made me think deeply about death and appreciate that I have endless of joyful things happening around me everyday so that I never think about dying.

    Theme : History, Detective Story

This novel tells the serial murder incidents of the scholars of Jiphyeonjeon during 7 days at Gyeongbok Palace before King Sejong proclaimed Hanguel. This book describes mortal Reformation Project of King Sejong under the serial killings and confrontation with the opposite side who try to disturb the project. The main character is 강채윤(Kang Chae Yun) who takes the serial murder incidents. The clues of the incidents are mystery picture, the tattoo on the bodies and cursed documents. However, the murder was continuously occurred before 채윤(Chae Yun) solved the first incident. Whenever 채윤(Chae Yun) found the other clues or facts about serial murder cases, the incidents became more complicated and the trace of criminal became increasingly blurred.
I read this book before it is made as drama in 2011. The most attractive part of this book is that the story is fiction, but it based on the history related to King Sejong. This aspect made me think as if the story treats true story, not fictional one. More I read, more I fell into the story. So, I can entirely concentrate on the book. Whenever the main character gradually solved incidents, I also felt nervous because I identified with the character. Furthermore, this story has mystery, deduction, action, confrontation, and romance a little bit. When I read this book, I had to consider all of these factors and I had to concentrate on the contents. For this reason, I could fall into the story and extremely enjoyed this book. I love finding good lines in many other films I watch. My favorite one is from OLDBOY the korean film. In the film, the main character gaze at the portrait with contains the simple scribbles,
“Laugh and the worlds will laugh with you
    Weep, and you weep alone”
This some kind of poetry made me think a lot. I figured out that this lines were from the long poetry of Ella Wheeler Wilcox. The title of the poet is Solitude. Here’s the original.
“Laugh and the worlds will laugh with you
    Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it’s mirth,
But has trouble enough of it’s own.
    Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
    But shrink from voicing care.

    Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
    Be glad, and you frends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

    Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure.
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on.
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

Ella wilcox had expressed so well how the solitude feels like.
I look at this poet many times after having trouble in relationship. It calms me down.
Another lines I like is from the film, V for Vendetta. In the scene when V saved Evey, one of main character who fall in love with V later on, V introduce himself to Evey using a play on words. Here’s what he said.
“Voila! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villian by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished, as the once vital voice of the verisimilitude now venerates what they once vilified. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, geld as a votive, not in vain, for the valure and veracity of such shall one day vis-a-vis and introduction, so it is my very good honor to meet you. And you may call me V.”
This line of V, was real fasinating. Though I have to look on the dictionary many times, It’s must be real hard to make a play on words by words starting with “V” which are mostly related to the justice.
