Sewol Accident

April 28, 2014

“Life ends but love remains eternal.”

Almost two weeks have passed since the sinking of the MV Sewol ferry with roughly 476 passengers on board, most of them secondary school students from Danwon High School on a field trip to Jeju Island. An incredibly tragic event, the victims’ family and friends, as well as fellow Koreans, must be deeply saddened and no words can assuage such feelings of grief. However, I am sure all of us extend our condolences to those in their time of loss and can only hope that the family and friends find comfort in their memories and love, which is very much alive.

Task: Choose a topic to write about from the list below. Try to choose a topic on which other students have not written.

    9. Overcoming the loss of a loved one

The families of Dae gu subway accident victims visited to Jindo for consoling the victims and their families and friends of Sewol Accident and giving a contribution. They told their experiences of Dae gu subway accident, and gave advice to the families and friends of Sewol Accident. I think they could do it because they are the families of Dae gu subway accident victims. Of course, it must be hard time to the families of Dae gu subway accident because the accident was too sad and tragic to remind. However, they know how the families and friends of Sewol Accident are distressed so they did like that. Although Sewol Accident is bleak, they are sharing and overcoming this hard time. After I heard this new, I thought about what I can help them. I decided to do from small things to large things like the families of Dae gu subway accident victims. I always pray for them or us. I wish we can get a hope.

The actions of the families of the Daegu subway accident are morally praiseworthy and a good example of humanity. Likely, they can provide valuable advice on how to overcome such a devastating loss that no others can.

First of all, I pray for the bliss of the departed with all my heart. I hope this kind of accident never happens again.

During the tragic sinking of the ferry, there were heroes who were trying to save the others. While the ferry was leaning to one side, Hongkyung Kim, a plumber who was supposed to head to Jeju to work, took off curtains and knotted them together. With the momentary idea he saved 20 people from 7 meters below with the long knotted curtains. Another hero, a lorry driver, Dongsoo Kim also saved about 10 students with a fire hose. He was taken in the video Hongkyung Kim recorded, in which he pulled up the students with the hose almost leaning on the bottom of the ferry when it almost tilted vertically. Thanks to these two brave men many people could survive in the hazardous situation. However, despite of the heroism they did willing to risk their own life, they now feel guilty for people who they couldn’t save. On an news interview Dongsoo Kim cried, saying ‘the students asked me to wait a little more…’
I am so saddened about this accident, and I feel so helpless. Would I have done that like them if I had been there? I don’t know. What they did is saving lives, an extremely valuable work. But sadly they might feel guilty for a long time, not being able to forget that terrible day, even though who really should feel guilty are others. I feel so sorry for the souls, and the survivors, and I believe we shouldn’t forget what the heroes showed us.

I agree. While some people showed cowardice, others demonstrated real heroism and should be held in esteem.

    4. Government response.

Firstly, I want to say I am really sorry for the loss to the family. This kind of disaster should never have happened.

Let’s talk about how the government reacted to this tragic accident. For the record, I am not a critic of the current government. However, the actions the government showed to the public after this accident were very disappointing. Above all, I believe that the president should have showed more leadership in terms of the responsibility. As all we know, all actions, especially in this kind of accident, are connected to responsibility, including costs. And, the president is in the position that can hold all the responsibilities in such urgent circumstances. However, what the president said and instructed was to punish the related people who did not do their jobs properly. In that situation, what if something goes wrong in the rescuing process? Who is going to take responsibilities for the mistakes and the cost? Who is going to aggressively trying to save those victims? Yes. NO ONE. What i am trying to say is that the president should have made the conditions that people can do their best in saving victims without worrying about the responsibility. Of course, someone should take a responsibility after all, but it is not late we do it after saving a number of lives. Every time I see the news showing grief of the family, it just made me so sad. If this kind of accidents happen in the future, i expect to see more strong leadership from the government. Again, I am really sorry for the losses.

    • April 29, 2014 4:21 pm

I am so sorry about the rescuing process too. However I hope to believe they are the same mind with us. Like us, they must hope that the whole people are rescued safely. I am so sad the fact that things I could is just praying for the victims. I hope this kind of accident never happens again.

I agree that a good leader must take ultimate responsibility. However, when a leader has excessive power, few subordinates want to take responsibility for decision-making for fear of losing their jobs. Therefore, a good leader hires good subordinates and trusts their decision-making skills. IMO, Korea needs a good disaster response team with experts who have the authority to make necessary and timely decisions without fear of becoming unemployed.

    8. Ship design

One of the Sewol Accident’s cause is ship design. Sewol ferry was constructed in Japan about 20 years ago. In 2012, Chonghaejin Marine Co., Ltd bought battered Sewol ferry from Japan and refurbished it. To increase profitability, this company remodeled ferry boat by constraint. When Sewol ferry was built in japan, Sewol ferry’s gross tonnage was 5997t. After impractical remodeling, this ferry’s gross tonnage rose to 6825t. During the remodeling process, right side lamp which make for boarding freight was eliminated and remodeling process make ferry’s center of gravity higher(center of gravity was higher than in 2012 by 51cm). As a result the elevated center of gravity cause a fatal accident. Sewol accident is not a natural disaster but a man-made one. this accident must not occur in the future. I hope missing person in the Sewol ferry will be returned safely.

I have read similar information, but we will have to wait for confirmation of the exact cause(s). I suspect corporate greed and the need to maximize profits may have played a role in the ship’s allegedly poor re-design.

I agree to professor Todd. Not only the structure of the ship but the company’s ignorance toward safety and lack of education in safety instructions might have offset to occur this tragedy.

    government response //

People cannot help but ask who is in charge as they see agencies passing the responsibility to one another and making serious mistakes over people such as the number of missing passengers and deaths. Also, the administration of Park never shows any apologize to the victims’ families. They merely seek for suspects. Was it right action which the head of one country should take? In addition to that, I have fairly often heard a great deal of contentions such as “the victims was so insensitive to their safety” or “this disaster was the result from the safety consciousness” in the sake of the ferry’s sinking. But I can surely say theses opinions never see the truth of the matter. I firmly believe this miserable case is highly connected with social corruption and irregularities. In other words, it is the problem of money. The crack is created between the two circumstances; the one is to observe rules and the other is to break rules. Then, I think, because the profit is much more in the case of the latter, corruptions appear from this crack. The word, safety ignorance, has often been used to cover up the previous many other fatal accidents by authorities who want to keep their power. In this manner, people in charge always have utilized this method to turn public’s eyes to the victims. How could anybody just stand and let themselves dying in the ship? When we see the government react in this standpoint, Park’s government surely manifested condolence, prosecuted crew members, investigated financial transactions between Semo Group chairman and Chonghaejin Marine Co. However, the government did not show the most important react, which is very appropriate action and attitude. As Park is the one who is located in the Top position in Korea, commanding such society’s irrationality and corruptions, she should have expressed some apologize. If Park Geun-hye do not want to hear criticize, she can withdraw from the crown and become general person as one of the numerous citizens in Korea.

Actually she apologized yesterday for the government’s poor response and she pledged to form a new safety agency. Also, Prime Minister Chung Hong-won resigned several days ago because of the government’s ineptitude at recovery operations. However, this may simply be political damage control to save face. I expect most Koreans to pay close attention to how PGH’s government tries to resolve the systemic problems of corruption and cronyism, as well as implementing and enforcing laws and regulations to protect individual citizen’s welfare.

    1. Personal stories
I experienced a similar happening that about my friend’s loss. One summer day before the summer vacation, I was middle school student. I gathered with friends, and one friend told us he will go to Southeast Asia for missionary works. Actually we didn’t like him because he was a sanguine and egocentric person. So we ignored his talk and made sarcastic responses. After that, we couldn’t see him, and can only possible through his picture. At that time, we didn’t sympthize with his family’s grief. Rather, we played with friends at a funeral hall since we met after a long vacation. But now, I can sympathize not just my friend’s tragedy but also Sewol ferry’s tragedy. Last tuesday, I went to group memorial altar for them at Seoul City Hall, and I saw many memoes to mourn them. Only just 4 years old child wrote this too. I was so shamed my past experience, so now I am trying to help them with a donation.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident

First of all, there should be a perfectly systemized emergency manual not only for ferries but for all the facilities that contain massive number of passengers. One of the biggest causes to Sewol Ferry tragedy was that none of the emergency procedures were done appropriately. A standardized instruction set by the goverment and an effective education based on such manual among the companies will give a guideline to such urgent situations.
In addition, safety of every single facilities should be examined thoroughly. Few days ago, I read an article about the dangerousness in the 2nd Lotte World that is now under construction in Jamsil, Seoul. According to the article, the underground water beneath the construction site is now being depleted, weakening the ground solidity, which can lead to a tremendous disaster when it gets completed. Therefore, in order to eliminate the possibilites, even small ones, the government should take its responsibility to place people’s safety in the top priority when examining such constructions.
I feel so sorry for everyone’s loss. I hope the families left behind could stay tight and all the passengers rest in peace.

In addition to updated training manuals, there needs to be regular mandatory safety training sessions because the manuals are meaningless if employees are not fully trained and ready for any potential emergencies. And I agree that government needs to prioritize people’s safety.

    6.crime and punishment
In this disaster captain and crews who were rescued by maritime police escaped firstly and they didn’t try to rescue passengers. President Park Geun-hye has condemned the conduct of some of the crew of the ferry that sank, calling it akin to murder. Her comments come as authorities confirm four members of the crew have been arrested for leaving the ship before the evacuation was complete. The captain has already been arrested. Investigation headquarters also arrested two people of cheonghaejin shipping company for overloading. Investigation department thinks that overloading is the one of the causes of the sinking. In addition department is investigating about the testimony that cheonghaejin shipping company even knew the risk of overloading and one of the crews in sewol ferry brought up the problem on the day of departure but they ignored.
I think there are more crimes which are related with this but not turn out yet. Everyone who was concerned with this disaster has to be punished hard.

In Western common law, murder requires intention or mens rea (a guilty mind). There is no evidence of a clear intention to kill, so we would probably refer to it as negligent homicide, criminal negligence which allows someone to die.

I do not know how to express this sadness for both victims and their families. It must be the hardest time in thier life and other people cannot imagine how hard this is. The only thing we can do is understanding them and praying for them. However, we should take care of them and share their pain for a while. Compared to happiness, sadness is something that has to be dealt with many people. When people talk about some say story, they need some listeners. Saying and Sharing those story itself is a process of overcoming the pain. Of course victims will be sad when they talk because telling story will remind them of this terrible disaster. On the other hand, the more people listen carefully for them, they will be able to get over their pain. I do not think they are able to forget this accident and overcome perfectly. But they need us. That is why victims from other accident came to visit to share their emotion. Therefore people in general should not forget this accident and be able to listen their story very carefully.

    4. Government response

After a ‘Sewol accident’, a person who was pointed out as a cause of the trouble is a ‘captain’ in a Sewol vessel. And the ruling party said that the captain’s behavior was no better than a murder not to take criticism from the opposition party. However, the French press which heard about the government’s statement showed a title of an article something like ‘a government seems like not to be responsible with this accident’.

Of course, a captain’s unresponsible action is one of the element which leads this situation. However, in this accident, the government’s effort on recovering a situation, being from a reckless captain’s decision, was strongly important. Despite a significance of this endeavor, a rigid system which shows a top-down organization of ‘work’ in Korea would be a barrier or obstacle preventing many volunteers to rescue the victims.

The rigid system has a role to organizationally lead a society well. However, if this system has to be skipped in the urgent situation, the government should get rid of the conservative structure and just focus on solving the problem. This accident is the consequence incurring because of an inflexible response.

I think a captain’s action was too wrong thing but he is not a murder. He just damaged passengers’ body and they were bleeding. Therefore, the government should have to give stitches in their wound. However, according to the present the responses, the government’s response is just like locking up the victims in a cold water.

The captain’s actions may not amount to murder, but they probably do amount to negligent homicide. Instead of having the passengers wait in their cabins, the captain and crew – once the chance of sinking was reasonably foreseeable – should have followed safety protocols and had everyone assemble at muster stations with life jackets on. This would have greatly mitigated against any loss of life. Yes, the government response could have been better, but the main culprit, IMO, was the action by the captain and crew. For the government’s part, Park Geun Hee has vowed to set up a emergency response team. Unfortunately, it is a little too late for the Sewol victims and their families.

    6. crime and punishment
At first, I merely thought that the criminals of this disaster are captain and crews who avoid their responsibilities. However, after seeing many news and articles, I was wrong. Although some news article reported only the tip of the iceberg, we can know the truth about the capacity of management on disaster. This tragic accident was not just a problem of personal carelessness, but it was a problem of a whole society. At first, there was not exist unified countermeasure headquarter, so it intensify the confusion between the victim’s family and government. Moreover, as time goes by, we can find the ‘cartels’, connection with company, maritime police, and high-ranking officials in the government. It was really shocking. They are another offenders and a source of potential danger. In these circumstances, although the investigation is going on, it can’t gain people’s trust. So, the investigation team should make a thorough investigation and punish to root out corruptions.

Actually the ‘revolving door’ appointments, where high-level government employees become private industry workers/consultants, shouldn’t be shocking. It has been going on for years. America also has big problems with revolving door appointments which benefit corporations to the detriment of everyone else. It is important for citizens to remain vigilant to this corruption and voice our opinions against it.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident
    (1) The company of shipment have to allow rule on design of shipment. The company of Sewol ship made the ship bigger too much, and that’s one reason of this accident. Also, this company violated the rule that they have to fasten transportation vehicle each other. Therefore, if the company violate the rule, they have to be punished.
    (2) Educate about safety rules to passengers and captain and crews. Especially, captain and crews had poor safety precautions so they led the ship so quickly even thought they were in dangerous course. If captain or crews violate or overlook safety rules, they have to be punished because it leads to huge disaster like Sewol accident.
    (3) We need organized system on rescue operation. The true was revealed that the connection between the maritime police and the company that own Sewol ship. That made rescue operation fool also their connection made private divers and company who want to give help go back without any rescue operations. Rescue operation had to be quickly, but they are obsessed with their connection instead of right and rapid rescue operation. So government have to run independent organization without any relationship with company.
    (4) Avoid reports on groundless rumors or unsubstantiated information. At first, press wrote their articles that everyone salvaged by maritime police, but it was wrong report and their report kept changing over and over. That intensified the confusion of people. Therefore, if media gave wrong informations, they have to be punished also.

I agree with your ideas. I hope all citizens take safety more seriously and I hope corporations and government become more accountable for accidents. Moreover, I think the best way to make corporations care about safety is to have a more robust legal system. Corporations are by nature amoral (so shaming them won’t suffice), but they respond to costs that affect their bottom line profits. Therefore, in cases such as this, civil lawsuits with high payouts can serve as a warning to other corporations that society prioritizes safety.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident
Korea had several big accidents which claimed many innocent life. From collapse of department store building in 1995, which made 500 innocent people dead, to recent collapse of resort building which caused about 120 deaths. We went through several disastrous accidents, but our society didn’t changed anything. However, from now on, we should be changed to prevent such accidents
First thing I found one point in common in those accidents, is that people who are in responsibility ran out first, and survived. I think this is the first thing to be changed in our society. People who are in higher position, should take more responsibility. That’s why they are in their position. However, in Korea’s system, the position goes higher, the less their responsibility takes. For example, in this accident, the captain of the ship escaped first, didn’t even tried to save passengers. It is not right at all.
Next thing is the prevention. As the investigation keep goes, reasons of this accident come out one by one. Main reasons were illegal extension of ship, lack of safety gears and instruction, delay and confusion in rescuing process. All of them could be prevented in advance, and if it could, many lives could be saved. Prevention is the most important.
For the last, people should not be swayed by the SNS. SNS has lots of positive effects, but not everybody uses it as a good purpose. Some Facebook page managers use this tragedy as their business. They are not accurate information givers, so people should distinguish what is true and what is wrong information.
It was such a tragedy, and I hope every souls rest in peace.

    2. Stories of heroism

There are few heroes in this tragedy but several people made a great effort to save lives. One of them is Ji Young Park who was a crew member. Unlike other regular crew members, she was a casual employee. Hence, she had no legal responsibility to rescue passengers. However as soon as the ferry was tilted, she tried to find some life vests which was on the third floor and she herself delivered life jackets even when the water level was high – almost reaching up to her chest. However, she didn’t give up rescuing other people. If I were a her, I might show my heels because I’m afraid of death. Oppositely, Ji Young Park was so brave that she didn’t stop her valiant decision to help. She even took her life vest off and gave it to one of the students. Then the student asked in astonishment, “Why don’t you go with us?” Ji Young Park replied, ” I will go after saving others. Please go and save yourself.”
The student escaped safely because of her help but Ji Young Park was found dead. if she escaped at the moment, she would be alive like the student but she sacrificed for others. I think her behavior was so incredible because if she wanted to abandon students, she could do and saved herself but she chose sacrificing herself. Therefore I think she is real hero in this tragedy.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident

Incident which should not happen is occured. 17days have passed, but it still not resolve yet. 221 people are dead, 81 people is still missing, and 179 people are rescued. It is dreadful incident. Korea went through many affair like Sewol for a long time. Although korea experienced those incidents, korea never show improvement. Korea need to change.
First, we should realize we are not safe at every moment. There is widespread public apathy toward everything in this country. It is called safety frigidity. Korean never agnize danger near them. We should have a perception of hazard. Sewol ferry is old which is over 10 years. Also, it is originally abandoned ship from Japan and it was remodeled to take hundreds people. This indifference about safety occurs those incident. we should change our thought.
second, we have to keep basic regulation. Sewol ferry overloaded and didn’t fix freights. It is basic thing which all vessels have to obey. Also, captain and crew ought to save passengers when they run into danger. It is specified in the captain law. But, they disobeyed this fundamental things and run away first time. Like this, ignoring basic occurs worse result.

    9. Overcoming the loss of a loved me
Before writing about topic that I chose, I need to set a basic premise that I have not been experienced loosing closed someone such as family, friend and so on. For this reason, I do not know exactly how to react when I lose precious people. Finally I decided to change my stance into victim of Sewol virtually so that I could find methods to overcome the loss of a loved me.
If my valued friends or families were in the Sewol ship at that moment, and they died by drown, I might feel that the world is caving. Imagine loosing parents, sister or future baby of mine at once, first of all, I cannot help crying. Second, express my anger, rage to others. Third, I do not anything just breathing and watching the sky all day. In short, it is totally impossible to overcome the situation by myself. What I am going to suggest is divided into two categories. One is government’s act the other is public’s one. The government has to make plan to rescue all people day and night. Moreover they need to organize disaster control tower and showing their effort to victim’s people in real time. Then the most suitable support countermeasure is established as soon as possible for them. In the field of public act is included do not making rumor, unconfirmed information, giving idle words and so on. All these kind of acts could make them in a bad mood and it seems like kill them twice. In addition, we need to encourage, caress, cheer them up again and again for changing their sadness.
The time goes by, someday or not it will be alright though, if it is possible, all of us should pray for them, care them from bottom of the heart by sharing their feeling or providing them with useful stuff.

    8. Ship design Because of the Sewol ferry accident, the safety of Ro-Ro ship was surrounded by controversy. Ro-Ro ships are vessels designed to carry wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, and trailers that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels. The ship has more narrow width than a common cargo ship. When accident happens, water flows into the crack of inclination plate and weight of the ship leans to one side because of this structure when the ship turns sharply. In history of ship accident, it has been known that ships which had horrible accident were usually Ro-Ro ship. Actually, the worst accidents that include the ship of Herald of Free Enterprise, MS Estonia and Alsalam Boccaccio 98 were caused by all Ro-Ro ship.
The government provisionally concludes that the sinking cause is sharp turn of the course. It explained the Sewol ferry was turned sharply and the center of gravity lost, so the ferry was sunk. However, International Maritime Organization had already warned dangerousness of Ro-Ro ship. But Sewol ferry was not applied the regulation because the ferry was the domestic passenger ship.
An awful accident happened when fault was not reviewed, corrected and also principle was broken. Even though similar accidents had already happened, Sewol ferry was not prepared for safety of passengers. This time, it should not pass the fault and surely the fault will have to be corrected.

    2. Stories of heroism

This spring in Korea is in deep sorrow after sinking of the MV Sewol ferry with about 476 passengers on board. Most of passengers are secondary school students from Danwon High School on a field trip to Jeju Island. It is real tragic. The grief of parents who have lost a child has no parallel. The captain and the crew must pay for what they did incorrectly and be punished. Compare to them who did not their duty, there are heros of this accident. The heros did their best and save many lifes at the danger of death. Jiyoung Park is one of the hero who sacrificed herself to save students. She was a collage student on a leave of absence and was a stewardess for part-time job. In the sinking ferry that even the captain abandoned from, she handed life vest to students even if she was just a part-timer. She was in third floor of the ship that are out of life vest, so she bring it from fourth floor and gave it to students in third floor. In addition, she cannot swim but did not take air jacket herself until the water came up to her chest. To the end she rescued students, and could not escape. “Why do not wear air jacket?” “I’ll get out of here after all of you escape.”. She is a real hero in our society. Pray for the bliss of her.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident

The sinking of the MV Sewol ferry shows us there are we have high necessity to change in many parts. After the subway disaster that occurred in Daegu, there were many changes. First, the government changed all the body of the subway to the material that is strong in fire. Second, after the accident, government try to promote that how we should act in an emergency situation in everywhere, also citizens try to think much about the possibility of an accident. Third, the governmnet gave a training to all the staffs of the subway station a lot.
In my opinion all of these changes were needed in this Sewol ferry disaster case.
First, they should be more safe fundamentally. For example, they should use safer material to make ferry, and have to check the safety everytime. Also, we need some systems of checking the safety. Second, the governmenet should make citizens let them know about the possible situations in many different cases, and what do we have to act like. If they promote this well, even though the accident occur, there will be less loss of people. In other words, by promote a lot, they should change people’s mind and background knowledge. Third, the government must train, educate the staffs. Maybe it is akward that government give training to every transportation institutes, so government can makes some regulations to educate staffs. For example, the rules like, they must give employees about some specific lecture about safety for every week.

    9. Overcoming the loss of a loved one

Four years ago, there was a tragic accident at sea, the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan, which was carrying 104 crew members, went down. Because of the accident, my friend’s brother was sacrificed, only a month short of his discharge from military service. After the accident, I saw and experienced that his families, friends, and many acquaintances were overwhelmed with grief. And now, in this Sewol Ferry tragedy, many people are shocked and saddened. No words can assuage such feelings of grief. General word of consolation doesn’t help for victims. And depending on the victim’s situation, some consolations might hurt them. But we should stay with them and lend them a helping hand, trying our best to comfort them and reduce their pain. Above all things, we try not to let such tragedy happen again. Because repeating a similar accident will remind victims about the loss of a loved one. I really hope that this kind of disaster never happens again.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident

This accident was caused from carelessness. For captain, crews, government employees, and even me, carelessness dominates our mind and the way of thinking in our lives. We must be careful. I’m sure that If everyone doesn’t do own’s duty, this kinds of tragedy will happen again.
Government makes a right rule and the person who it may concern follows the rule faithfully. We need to start again at this point. Korean tend to break rules easily when it’s routine works. This tendency made this tragic accident. Needs to change not only go for the people who was related to this accident, all Korean have to feel responsibility for this accident and learn from this accident. Get out of the mannerism and do our duty. Students do study, workers do work, teachers do teach. This is all we have to and can do now.

    1. Personal Stories

When I was young, I used to live in Wa-dong, Ansan and still my aunt is living in Ansan. Most of my childhood memories were in Ansan but they were almost faded away. Thus, when I heard the news, I didn’t know where a group memorial altar and a high school are. It was just a vague sympathy. Last week, however, my aunt and I went to a group memorial altar. When I arrived at the altar, I was so shocked. I could literally see my old house at there. Going to that high school from my old place only takes about 7 minutes on foot, and my younger sister is exactly the same age with them. It means that my family could have been suffered from this accident. I was crying before I acknowledge that fact, but after I cried more. They are actually my sister’s friends. We went to the same elementary school and we were living in the same town. Since then, it is not some kind of headline news to me but rather a reality. Inside the memorial altar, I saw the pictures of people who were sacrificed. But I couldn’t see them straightforwardly. I was so young when I was in Ansan, but I might be able to suddenly think of their faces. And I was so afraid of me being second-hand-victim. Ansan, the whole city, is blue and quite these days. To some citizens like me, it is not just an accident. I promise to never forget this Sewol accident. It is so sad that all I can do right now is just wishing all the victims to rest in peace. RIP to all.

    7. Changes that should result from this accident

When the news came about the ferry and victims, people who lives in korea shocked. In my case, I have sister and the her school trip is planed the day after accident happened. It hard for me to let her go so I said she shouldn’t go there. Because I worried about her. The problem is that there are thousands of people in Korea and they are not safe as they think and now we realize that we are not safe thorugh accident as I did.
People need to be protected and that is the reason lots of laws are made. Laws are made but they are barely effective because they exist but not regulated meticulously. overloading and remodeling ship which is one of main causes of the tragidy could be caught if the law worked effectively.
Education is also need for emergency situation. If someone educaed weel about safty rules, they could come out instead of stucking themselves in the ship. And most important thing is education for captain and crews. If captain orders escaping then they all could alive.
People who has job should be responsible for their works. few days ago, two train crashed and during the invastigation people who check up the train said he knew that there was some problem. For them it is works for do daily but for users, if they just pass the problem with unsolved, they can be badly wounded or even death.
So many innocents people died. And it’s hurting me. I cannot dare imagine how beleaved feel. If changed are not made, tragidies can happen tommorow or even today. It’s the very time we start to make difference.

    8. ship design

First, before I start this essay, I have to say a word for them. Rest in peace. So sorry for all of you that we didn’t protect you from the disaster. R.I.P.
Everyday when I wake up in the morning, I always check up the articles about sewol accident, with a big sigh. Among the articles, I found some articles which make me furious. It was about some guessing about the causes. One of the causes of the accident was the changes of the ship design. The ship was imported from japan on October in 2012. Then the ship company extended the ship levels from 4 levels to 5 levels for amplifying the rooms. The capacity of the Sewol ship increased to 956. In addition the center of the gravity rose 15cm surprisingly. In a common sense, to cover rise of the center of the gravity, Sewol company shoud have taken some proper actions for those behavior. However they did not properly acted for that. Just for the profits and gains which come back immediately triggered enormous victims which no longer can come back. Just a simple change in ship design victimized the hundreds of people who are innocent. Also, this shows the exact side of the Korea’s regulation about ship design and safety.

    9. Overcoming the loss of a loved one

I made a phone call to my mother after I watched some breaking news about Sewol ferry. And I got a shocking news that one of the missing people is an acquaintance’s only son. I heard that his parents lost their consciousness, unable to overcome the grief. Immediately they came to their senses and tried to conceal their grief. Other parents and they started to depend on each other and shared their sorrow deeply. A few days later, their son’s body was discovered. The family accepted his death and held a funeral for him. I heared they remained aloof at the funeral. However, I think human beings can never remain indifferent in the face of death especially children gone before. I cannot understand whole feelings of the parents in Jindo because obviously the proof of the pudding is in the eating. But I really feel sad that teenagers who were full of dreams and hopes for the future lost their lives by this unfortunate accident. I hope many parents get their strength as soon as possible because maybe it is the one that their children want to do in heaven.

    9. Overcoming the loss of a loved one
First, I really sorry for victims and family of that accident and hope them to overcome this tragic experience.
I think that there is no consolation for them.
The most important thing is that we must cheer them in any ways. For example, Internet comments, letters, or funding money, any method can be a little help for them. We should not forget this miserable experience. The one thing we can do is that we always remember this accident and keep cheering victim’s family and other related people. I try to think one specific overcoming these experience but there is nothing special method. Just being with them together and crying togehter sharing the grief are the thing we can do for them.
Again, I hope a lot of victims’ family have energy to live yesterday wouldn’t be too soon.

When I was 15 years old, I lost my friend by medical accident. When I first heard the news by phone call, I was in school. I couldn’t believe the news that my friend had gone so I made a phone call to the friend. But of course she didn’t answer. After the phone call, I broke down in tear even though I was in school and many students were watching me. All of the emotions that I felt then were too much for me. My friend and I was only 15 years old but she had gone because of the medical accident. And I was too young to do something. I couldn’t do anything for her wrongful death. I felt so sorry for my friend. I should have be nice to her. At her funeral, I couldn’t cry in front of her parents. But in my way home after visiting the funeral, I cried too much and fainted.
I didn’t know how to let her go. Everything confused me. Since that time, I had had religion. I know that having religion is a kind of self-contentment. By believing next life or heaven, I could relax myself. “Maybe she would be happy in heaven.”
However, the best way for healing is time. As time goes by, the hurt gets healed. Of course I can’t forget her. I remind her every year, and love her. But I become stronger than before. Nothing can heal the person who lost his or her love but only time, can be the way.

    7. changes that should result from this accident.

Why did we have again such a terrible accident after Chun-an accident?
Why did not we do anything that we learned from the Chun-an accident?
Why do we have to lose a lot of our still young people..

After deep investigations, It turned out that the one of the causes was from the private cooperate, 청해진. The company only pursued its profits. It ignored the important regulations on ships and its passengers’ safety, blinded by the lure of big earning. In addition, this was possible because the punishment on violation of the law was not that severe so far. The government also did not manage related laws and did not practice and monitor it.

We, Korea should learn something from this sorrowful accident and make a move.
The government must inspect and redesign the current safety systems. furthermore, the punishment on breaking regulations must be strict than now.

Personally for me, it is really difficult to say something about this accident.
I just pray that the victims will be never forgotten from many people.

    2. Stories of heroism

There was one crew member in the Sewol ferry with hundreds of students and she is the absolute heroin of this accident. Even Obama know of her and he explained why we need a hero like her in our society during one speech.
In that terrible situation that Ferry was sinking toward the bottom of sea, she helped the passengers especially young high school students escape and tended to the injured. students those who survived said that she refused to leave the ship while there were still passengers to be rescued. Finally she found dead.

As knowing her personal life, she had a economic difficulty in her family and this is why she became the crew member as a part time job. She lives with her grandmother and siblings. She was playing a role of mother and father to her sister. She tried to live with her best effort, however, she is gone now and never come back.

Sometimes, life is unfair when I read this kind of tragedy and hero. She was hero, but could not be able to hero forever, since she was killed by weak Korean government who did not try to rescue their citizens. It is so sad and should not be forgotten for ever and ever.

    3. Rescue efforts

One of most furious thing about Sewol accident was the irrationality during rescuing victims. Telling the conclusion first of all, no one are rescued alive after the first day. All of the survivors are who went outside of ferry when right after the accident. During the first few days, bad weather, fast tide and diving rules seemed to be main obstructions of rescue, also major broadcasting stations and main newspapers reported that. However more few days after, I could not repress my astonishment when numerous news about the true reason were issued by the press. The truth is that with the support of the maritime police, the salvage company “Undin” disturbed the navy, UDT, and especially many of professional private divers, for monopolize right of rescue. They wanted to make more financial profit because they earn money by rescuing each people dead or alive. This company also be confirmed on close link with the maritime police and big business. If all of manpower were put into rescue mission right after the accident, at least even only one person who is inside of ferry could be survived. I despaired about that human life was measured with money and neglected by calculating material interest.

Sewol Ferry with around 500 passengers sank in 16, April. Because of this accident, 290 people passed away and 14 victims are still missing. The cause of this tragedy is still being investigated, but the clear thing is that the distorted greed towards money and corruption of bureaucracy have affected to this tragedy.

Jin-do gym near the sea have been filled with grieves of the families who cannot help but wait only the news from the rescue team. When I volunteered at the funeral of one of the victims, I felt the family’s sadness can never been expressed in words. The victim was a young student of Danwon high school. Every time his friends in other school uniform condoled, his parents wailed miserably in front of his portrait. The grief in their words “Enjoy the meals because it is his last treat.” is beyond the reckoning.

Nevertheless, we are forgetting this sadness while hearing sorrowful soliloquy of victims’ family. Now comedies and dramas are being televised, and in SNS there are funny pictures and videos between the news of Sewol ferry. Even some people leave brutal comments toward bereaved families on a web. The tears of President Park have been spotlighted and drawn social sympathy but the painful cry of the bereaved families has been disappeared in media. After whirls of sadness and rage, there leaved only formal apology and oblivion, not detailed investigation or self-reflection. Rally for asserting truth ascertainment of Sewol tragedy is being banned and some people are trying to use this tragedy for their political success.

If just because we are not related to the victims directly, we forget the sadness, someday this miserable soliloquy may be ours. Although the tragically brief candle went out, there are still the scent and warmth. The candle dripping which does not harden yet is telling us that we should make effort to prevent tragedy like this from happening again.
