Comparing Interpretations

May 7, 2014

After the loooooooong weekend, I thought I’d keep it a little easy for you.

This week’s blogging assignment has a cultural element, and as we are cultural studies students this shouldn’t be too difficult a task.

What you have to do is compare two cultural products of the same subject matter.

What this means is choose something like a book, movie, song, play, painting, or anything cultural, and then compare it with a different interpretation.

Exampes include…

A book and a film made of the book e.g. Harry Potter etc.

A song and a painting or photograph about a song or the song being performed, or an event you saw the song being performed at.

Bob Dylan, live in Seoul. April 2010

A film and a musical interpretation of the  and film of the play e.g. The Lion King

An original film and a later adaptation e.g. Old Boy

You can choose anything you like though, and these are just hints so that you can understand the task. There are a lot of different options you can choose from here, and I encourage you to be creative and thoughtful.

Choose one of the following options to focus on:

  1. The differences and/or similarities
  2. What made it better/ or worse
  3. How did the reproduction affect your interpretation of the original work
  4. How is this a good example of why we should/should not reproduce cultural and artistic creations
  5. What is the value of cultural reproduction?
  6. How might you have done this reproduction differently?
  7. Discuss your subject in relation to this quotation by German theorist Walter Benjamin:
In even the most perfect reproduction, one thing is lacking: the here and now of the work of art-its unique existence in a particular place. It is this unique existence-and nothing else-that bears the mark of the history to which the work has been subject.
Benjamin, Walter. The Work of Art in the age of Mechanical Reproduction. 1935.
  8. If you could reproduce a cultural product (a novel, film, play, artwork, poem, or anything else) that has not been reproduced before, what would it be? Why would you choose this? Would you make it different from its original, or would you try to echo it as much as possible?

Good luck!

P.S. As this is arriving late online here, you have until Sunday midnight to complete this assignment.

Both film version and musical version of Le miserable are based on the novel Le miserable written by Victor Hugo.
And film version Le miserable is based on the novel and also its many elements come from West End Musical by Cameron Mackintosh.
I think that film version is better than former musical version. Because there are so many superstars in the film. And Star-casting is one of the most important thing in cultural aspect.
Because anyway a lot of cultural productions need many audiences. In other words they need popularity. In this regard, film version Le miserable drew hundreds of moviegoers two years ago. It succeeded.
And in its storyline, I think that the film version Le miserable much more covers the love episodes among the characters than original musical version Le miserable. So, we could feel more romantic mood in the film version.
For these reasons, film version Le miserable is better than that of musical version.

“Seen by more than 65 million people in 42 countries and in 22 languages around the globe, it is still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 29th year”

Which film version of Les Miserables are you talking about by the way?

Have you heard the song, “Running(달리기)” by SES? Many people are encouraged from this song. Rhythm of this song is lilting and the lines are cheerful. When people listen to this song, usually they think that the song gives a possitive power to live hardly again. They consider the story of this song like that even if life has great deal of trouble, it is not the time to give up. For this reason, a lot of peole love this song and listen when they need cheer. However, actually the origin of the song comes from suicide. After recognition of the fact, many people are surprized. The image from the song and the fact have contrasting meaning. Maybe the origin story of this song suggests that it is the time to give up because this is hard time. A softer interpretation is that the story represents the someone’s feeling who wants to kill oneself. It shows us different interpretations from same origin. The differences can be just an interesting one. On the other hand, we can catch the necessity of accurate interpretation because the interpretations make different images although using similar words and having the same origin.

    5. What is the value of cultural reproduction?

A lot of great works have been made for centuries, and currently, with better skills and devices, far more works are being made at this moment. There are so many various culture products in the society, but people usually tend to look for the things at the top of the accumulation, new ones. Fascinated by new and fresh things we usually forget what we loved a long time ago, or even a month ago. In this regard, cultural reproduction can be a reminder. For examples, recently there was a popular audition show, in which one of the applicants remade Sting’s song, Englishman in New York, and the new version got very popular. It reminded some people the old famous song they had forgotten, and it also gave the young people a chance to encounter the old song they had never heard before. In that way, the old culture products can come to life again and become a creature which is new and old at the same time.

If I can reproduce a book, I want to reproduce the book “23 things they don’t tell you about capitalism.” This is one of my favorite books because this made me think a lot about the current capitalism system and lots of possible wrong facts about capitalism. I want to make this book into a documentary so that more people can find out about the history of capitalism and a number of stereotypes about developed and developing countries. For example, many people think developed countries became such rich countries by opening their countries to the trade. In other words, people think free trade always makes country more affluent. However, those countries always protected their central industries, using many trade barriers. Besides this, this book deals with a lot of interesting economic facts. Therefore, I thought it would be great to make this book into a documentary with some fun elements in order to let more people know about it. Well, I think I can try for real in the future! 🙂

    1. The differences and/or similarities

Have you ever watched drama “Queen’s classroom(여왕의 교실)”? If so, do you know that this original work is japanese drama? There are difference and similarities between two drama. Two drama are similar to overall story line. This drama has story unfolded after fastidious schoolmistress start for her new post as homeroom teacher in elementary school. Besides a subtle distinction like clothes and props, there is not a great deal of the difference between two drama’s story line. However, there are difference between main character‘s acting ability. main character “Maya” in the original is character like robot that speaks thrillingly and constantly. On the other hand, heroine “Teacher Ma” in the remake doesn’t look as fear and offhand. I think that these difference come from actor’s ability.

The movie ‘The devil wears Prada’ is rare case in the way that almost movie can not receive accomplishments from audiences than the original novel. Almost audience can not satisfied movie, because movie can not bring details and subtle emotions and feelings of characters enough. In contrast, the original of the devil wears the prada is quite simple style in writings so it can not bring any interest to me. But, the movie version is so stylish and story telling is more better than books. Also, there are excellent movie stars who is talent. In case of movie, casting is so important and the movie worked that greatly, therefore, the movie did well at the box office. If directors of flim are so engrossed in following every plots, eventually it will be boring and it can be a target easily which is compared with the original. However, If directors make the movie by organized flow and own style, it can be a masterpiece than the original.

The play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ was more interesting compared with original version written by Shakespeare. Story is the same in both play and text version but play is more lively and easy to understand because Shakespeare use many difficult words in his writing. The play I watched was different with other play because in this play performers didn’t wear special customs or make-up. In addition there was not special background but there was no difficulty to be immersed in play and I can enjoy the play fully. Performer just used small props when they were acting. I think this play was completed perfectly with audience’s imagination. Imagination filled the insufficient parts in play and complete the characters and background. I like this play because it offered opportunity to audiences to imagine and think freely about the play. This play reproduced Shakespeare’s written version well and newly and I think it was worth seeing.

Hmmm I think that a performance of the play and the actual written play are the same thing, unless the script was adapted for modern audiences.

    The differences and/or similarities

I picked ‘Total messed family'(오빠가 돌아왔다). This movie stems from the original novel. In my case, I read the book before watching the movie. So, It’s easy to see evident differences.
The biggest one is amount. The running-time of the movie is only 94 mins while the book has more than 270 pages. It is hard to see detail contents in movies because movies are usually permitted shorter time than other product. This movie is also allowed to show only simple plot, not specific dialogues and lines. This simplicity makes the movie as a comedy genre even though the origin was aimed at showing a wrong family values. The content is about immorality. In the movie, however, only funny parts have being stand out. For this reason, personally I prefer readable things to watchable things.

    The differences

Many reporductive arts usually make less popularity than orginal arts. However, ‘Life of pie’ which  was mady by Lee Ang in hollywood, made much popularity and interest and it was prasied by many film critics saying that It express various fantastic scene in a effective way through film. In the movie, there are many differences from the novel.

At first In novel’s beginning, the writer mainly tell the story about religious. Pie, protagonist, have many curiosity about religious and have belief with going Hindu, Islam, Chrisianity temple. Especially, these three priests fight each other arguing about their religious belief.

Secondly, amid of sailing the ocean, Pie has a conversation with other castaway with losing a sight for a minute. Although these parts have many meaning in the novel and the writer make much efforts to emphsize this, the film maker did not include this parts. I think this is because this was made based on hollywood so the maker, at the very first time, wanted to show many people around the world not in the singular culture. Moreover, In respect of medium, the film initially has the power of making image.

    3. How did the reproduction affect your interpretation of the original work

It is said that the reproductions of original works are limiting one’s imagination. And I totally agree with that. When I was in middle school, Twilight Sega was released. My friends and I were so into this book; I even read this series in Korean, in English and saw all the recreated movies. To talk about my feelings first, the original which was written in English was the best and the movie was the worst. When I read books, the characters, their personalities, backgrounds, and other things all suit my appetite. However, reproduced movie was different; it was already designed. The producers cast the actors and actresses whom they think matching the character. However, it is their perspective, not mine. In other words, it was not like my imagination; they rather limited my imagination. Since I watched that movies, I can’t recall my own Edward and Bella. Their originality which I made was all gone. To sum up, reproductions often limit one’s imagination.

What I want to say about this topic is Harry Poter even though it is an example of this blogging assingment on this week. Actually, many people may say that Harry Potter movie was not as good as the novel or some said movie was terrible comapared to the novel. Well, I somehow agree those arguments because the novel was excellent. This novel was the first book that made me pass night without sleep. Moreover it was my first book that I had an interest in reading books. That is why the novel was way better than the movie although the movie was not that bad. When I first had watched the first Harry Poter movie, I was so disappointed but this movie series had some power that made me watch every series. So, I watched all movies. In the movies, there were many scenes skipped and I barely saw Harry’s scar on his forehead. After first movie, actors and actress grew so fast that there were some part we could not focus on scenes. However, Emma Watson was still cute, this is the most important. Anyway, the movie was not that bad but the novel was so fantastic.

I would complare between the book name of and it’s reproduction movie . The book is about a young teenage girl and an old man who loves the girl. It seems like wierd but the text itself is very serious. The book makes people to think how sad that a human becomes old but he or she is still young at heart. In thr book, the old man can’t expose his mind to the young girl for the young girl. The love is so pity and sorrowful. However the movie completly ruined the original mieaning of the book. It just focused on the sexual love between the two people. The advertisement also emphasized the sexual content. In the movie, the old man always glances the girl’s skin. Also the girl looks mad because she doesn’t take care of her clothes in front of him even though her clothes crwaled up. I was so disappointed at the movie. It just focused on gathering people and emphasized the sexual contents. It was terrible for me.

      What was the book/movie?

    • May 11, 2014 9:33 pm

It’s worth noting that a film adaptation of a novel is always an artistic interpretation of the book. You’re not supposed to like it any more than you’re supposed to like the book. Of coruse, if Hollywood is involved it’s likely you will dislike it.

    The differences and/or similarities

I have ever read a script of ‘Death of a Salesman’. A structure of plays script is organized by ‘instructions’ and ‘lines’. Players have to behave by following instructions and speak by reading lines. When I saw a script of the play, I enough felt Willy Lowman’s emotion feeling a separation between him and the community he lives in(‘Willy’ is one of the heroes and have lived in the America society with having a ‘American dream’ but his reality often go to the complete opposite of the goal.) By reading a script, I could imagine many scenes and enjoy drawing a situation according to what I like. Even in my head, I casted suitable actors and actresses and thought them portraying characters. It was so fun thing.

However, in a movie of the play, I didn’t think that this medium, a movie, is better than a script. Because, when I saw an expression in the movie, I was continually disappointed by many things which had been made in my head following my way. For example, Willy’s emotion was excessively expressed in movie like over-action. And the American society which made Willy be crazy was a little bit peaceful, not to coincide with his mind. If I were a director of the play, I would shape an environment of society being barren and desolate.

After finishing the movie, I thought that I had rather leave my imagination alone than limit free-form thoughts. I still didn’t be stained with a modern technology, digital things.

Do you know ‘The Palace’? It is originally a romantic comedy comics. As comics gained more popularity, it was recreated as drama. It was broadcast in 2006, at MBC. Basic setting is that Korea is a constitutional monarchy. Meanwhile, ordinary high school girl married crowm prince by ancester’s engagement. It is the brief story. However, many people who read the comics are unsatisfactory the drama. Because the characters’ feature is not revealed well. In drama version, PD might not understand the characters’ feature and concentrated to show their filming site and props which cost high to prepare. Although filming site and image beauty are also important, drama version was considered that it was too different from original comics. In addition, the actors and actresses’ acting abillity became issue. Many viewers complained their fool acting abillity which obstruct immersion to drama.

When I was in Washington D.C., the Korean Embassy held a festival to introduce the Korean culture to the local Americans. They designed special programs such as traditional games, cooking, movies, and plays. They tried to reproduct the cultural aspects of Korea to an easy concept so that people go through a smooth understanding. I was partially satisfied to the structure of the program and know that the people participating the festival had a lot of fun, however, there was not enough time to communicate. Since the people in the embassy tried to promote diverse aspects of Korea, there were too much of them leading to a bit of a confusion. Thus, if I was the designer of such program, I would set a Q&A session in order to communicate with people who eager to know more about Korea. In addition, I would set the festival into a monthly project, so that the ones participated in the former event could continuously keep their interest on the upcoming events.

Usually, most movies based on books couldn’t surpass the quality of the original book. Since it is extremely hard to put all stories and contents of the original book into a 2 hour(maybe more or less) movie, most directors tried to but failed. However, I think one did survived. It is the Lord of the Rings. I think this movie greatly depicted the story, and also the visual things of original novel, and furthermore, it gained more popularity worldwide.
Thanks to computer graphic and many special effects, the movie successfully illustrated the creatures, scenery, and many other things. Through books, people only could imagine how Hobbits or Dwarfs looks like, but in the movie, by representing the characteristics of every single thing, the creatures and characters in the book actually visualized.
Also, the plot of the movie was great. The movie successfully contained every important scenes and characters. When I was young, I watched movie fist, and then read the book. However, I couldn’t found much difference between book and the movie.
Furthermore, additional cultural contents helped to get more fame of the movie. Characters of the movie made lots of merchandises, and actors of the movie got their reputation.
To sum up, despite most of movies failed to overcome the original, the Lord of the Rings made it. Through compact plot, computer graphic, and additional advertisement made movie even more famous than book.

    2. What made it worse

I chose the movie ‘용의자 X의 헌신’ (Dedication of the suspect X). This movie was first made in 2008 in japan. I usually do not watch japan movies because of some wierd atmosphere (there are some ‘japan’ ‘s atmosphere in all japanese movies). However I encountered this movie by chance. The genre of this movie is criminal and drama. These genres are my favorite.
In 2012, in Korea, a movie director 방은진 remade this movie into 용의자 X (the suspect X). As I was really touched by prior movie in 2008, I was interested in this movie. So I decided to watch this movie without hesitation. The point is I felt wistful feeling about the latter.
First, in 2012 movie the suspect x expressed their messages straightforwardly. I was touched by some silent expressing method (ex. just showing the accident in screen without dialogues between the actors) in prior movie. They implied much more in screen than dialogues. However in korean version, they just exploded the emotion of the actors and accidents.
Second, casting was not appropriate. How dare I could say this ;)! In comparison between 2008 and 2012, I was wistful about casting. In 2012 version, the main actors were 류승범 이요원 조진웅. They are all famous actors in Korea. However, 류승범 was too young for the role in the movie in my private opinion. In movie, 류승범 loves 이요원 very purely and contiunously. In addition, 류승범 does not reveal his love in front of 이요원, but 류승범 ‘s images are too bright and nasty which are located in my mind deeply. Also 이요원’s acting wasn’t that nice to absorb in the movie.

    1. differences
I would like to compare the famous fairy tale made by Walt Disney and by Grimm’s brothers. Its first creator were the Grimm’s brothers in Germany, and then Disney grabbed into his animation film.
    1. First, the price have little importance in Grimm’s brothers. As he appeared in Disney’s, he got the love connection with Snow white. He is playing the most important role in Disney’s, which is saving the dead snow white by a kiss. Somehow, it implies the male’s power that can save female, family, and even the world as it made in 1937.

    2. The seven dwarfs in Grimm’s have no name and just work for live. Also, because they only work without the time to clean their house, they ask Snow white to clean their place. However in Disney’s, Once they got each’s name, they are more likely to communicate each other. Moreover, Snow white first begin cleaning those seven dwarf’s house, washing the dishes and doing their laundries. It means that Disney want to emphasize “working as a housewife” of female.

3.How did the reproduction affect your interpretation of the original work.

“Midnight Summer’s Dream” is the play originally written by shake sphere. The play I saw is directed by Tom Morris with Handspring Puppet Company which is based on South Africa Cape Town. It was first time for me to see using Puppet in the play.
When I entered the theater I expected it to be boring because the play interpreted in my mind through reading was quite normal. When the paly began, it stunning moment for me. For example, the Scene Titania fall a sleep before fall In love with bottom, all actors comes up to stage and they held wood stick and make some shape of Titania which is seemed like wing of Titania for me. When they make the shape of Puck, They used other small pieces and made it seems like dog. I thought this is the special thing in this play and it would never make without joining of Puppet Company. For me it was really unexpected directing skill because when i went in to the theater I expected one actor assigned for one character. But there was no actor and the materials around the stage became the living creatures.
When we read the play, we visualize the play by our imagination. For me, what I imagined and how the play directed was wholly different. It was really stunning experience to compare both works.

Based on features of novel and movie or drama, both of them have advantage and disadvantage. In case of novel, describing subjects and storyline is easier than movie. On contrary, it is easy to recognize the mood, looks, action and so on in the movie than novel.
In this sense, I would like to think about the best way to appreciate the drama and book so called ‘The Game of Thrones’. Generally speaking, it is too difficult to contain all stories, background information of book into drama. When I read it, I had to focus on for a long time to catch up the stories and relationships between characters. Sometimes, I even used to turn over pages front and back in order to keep track of plot. However, watching a series of ‘The Game if Thrones’ in a week, I did not need to extremely concentrate on it. What I did was that watching it with beer or snacks with comfortable pose. Because of development of film making skills, various sub-effects and so on, visualizing contents of book into drama is much easier than before. For examples, fight scene, make love scene were described in the novel, it was not effective. Thanks to film making high tech skills, directors could illustrate actions, background scenes vividly.
In short, I thought that watching ‘The Game of Thrones’ drama is better than reading the novel.

“In even the most perfect reproduction, one thing is lacking: the here and now of the work of art-its unique existence in a particular place. It is this unique existence-and nothing else-that bears the mark of the history to which the work has been subject.”
Benjamin, Walter. The Work of Art in the age of Mechanical Reproduction. 1935.

In most Disney’s films, original works, fairy tales, is not viewed as a important factor. As Benjamin said, each original fairy tale would have a unique existence. However, Disney has created his own world by producing animations with entirely different subject. For instance, in Puss in Boots(1922), we can see how he grasped the literary fairy tale and used it as self-figuration. He basically did not care whether spectators knew the original “Puss in Boots”. Instead, his cartoons consist of autobiographical elements. At first, Perrault, who wrote original work, wanted to represent 1679’s time. In his tale, cat means his own class, bourgeois, who comprised the administrative class of court and who meditators between the peasantry and aristocracy. And by tricking a king and ogre, cat succeed to solving problem among people. There are might be different view on this theme, but it is predominant approach, which most of the viewers have. However, this is not the case in animation “Puss in Boots”. The hero is a young man, who is in love with the king’s daughter. Although cat is crucial in this film too, Disney simply focused most of his attention on the young man who wants to succeed at all costs. It is entirely contrast to the traditional fairy tale. And there are no theme worthy of the name of theme. Rather, Disney wanted to boast his developed technical expression skill on screen by removing any original subject, and there become to remain only images.

The Japanese novel Hwa Cha has two versions. One of them is korean movie and the other is Japanese drama.

    1. Similarity
First, The main plot is alike. One day, a female character disappear without trace. Hence, the male character whose fiance of the female looks for her. To find her, he asks detective for help and the detective reveals shocking fact that she has two identities. It means that she has different name and goes out with many guys and she’s been married in the past.

    2. Differences

First, japanese drama includes social problem. The background of drama is Bubble Economy so it deals with the loss of humanity. On the other hand korean movie only focus on personal love so we can empathize with him while we watch.

Second, Male character of drama searches for disappeared woman but when he knows identity of her- she has a experience of marriage and she has two different name, he gives up finding her.
On the other hand, Korean movie’s male character, Lee sun guen whose fiance of female character, Sun Young, looks for her all over the place. He comes to know Sun Young is actually Kyung Sun and she has experience of marriage. However he still loves her and want to find her. In other words, movie emphasize personal feeling of love.

Have you ever watched the movie ‘Twilight’? It was released in 2008 and ranked 13th of Box office records. As its reputation showed, many people watched the movie. However, the movie was actually a reproduction made by novel. The novel was written by Stephanie Meyer. The reproduction was usually rated low but I think it expressed the original work well. In Reproductive process, director of the movie and writer of the original work tried to be true to the original work. Therefore, as I mentioned earlier, ‘Twilight’ could be a box office hit. And there are two aspects that the movie made better than the novel.
First, the movie arranged characters well. In the novel, many characters were appeared but it quite confused because characters had complex relationships with each other. So it was difficult to understand the relationships of characters. On the other hand, the movie showed relationships among characters clearly through the image. Therefore, it was easy to understand relationships.
Second, scene direction of the movie expressed the imagination of the novel well. The scene to express power of vampire was quite interesting. Director tried to show the amazing ability of vampire, so the director used the wire action to express their speed and used computer graphics to improve it. Furthermore, the scene that human changed to wolf received attention. It was also made by computer graphics. The scene showed the changing process meticulously and the action dynamically. Thus, audiences were under the illusion that it was a reality.
In conclusion, arrangement of characters and scene direction of the movie made better than the novel. Recently, many reproductions have released. However, some reproductions are rated high and some are rated low because of many elements. Above all, the most important thing is expressing the main points of the original work well. It is the key to success of reproduction like ‘Twilight’.

5.What is the value of cultural reproduction?

I have analyzed about ‘Romeo and Juliet’, which is released as a movie in 1936, 1972, and 1996. Actually the version of 1936 was too old and it looked like a play. So I will introduce differences between the 1972 and 1996.
Most of all, we should know that where these two films made. one thing which is released in 1972, was made in England, and the other thing was made in Hollywood. We may think that this can’t be effect on because it is based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. I think 1972’s film tried to reproduce Shakespeare’s tragedy completely. Conversely, 1996’s film tried to show a dynamic scenery such as gunfighting, and car explosion. Also characters of 1972’s movie speak to an old English, so I had a difficulty to analyze their discourse. However, 1996’s movie also use an old English, but they didn’t speak too much. Rather, they use a modern English, and a dynamic scenery is used more. The last difference between the two is a scenery. The background of 1972’s film shows in Shakespeare tragedy’s time. The character wears a traditional costume, and walk around the old street. 1996’s film denied this. They wear a hawaiian shirts and drive on the modern street with drink.
In sum, I found a different code between the two. Usually, 1972’s feature was concentrated on traditional code in England, because they might think that Shakespeare’s product is their spirit. But 1996’s feature film shows more dynamic action scene because it made in Hollywood, which pursue a commercial benefit. Therefore, these two things are similar but have different cultural code, so it was funny to me.

(2010) is a horror film about the love story between a lonely boy and vampire girl. This film is a remake of the film of (2008) by Tomas Alfredson in Sweden. In fact, the movies is based on a book by the same title and both of them were close to the original novel in popularity. But many people say that the original movie version by swedish director is better than the Hollywood version by Matt Reeves, because gloomy atmosphere of the movie in the original one is the best. I agree with it in a degree. I love the tone of the swedish film too, however, I love the Hollywood version better than the original. by hollywood has a tight plot to keep the audience in suspense. In aspect of horror film, it is better than , I think. And I like the heroine in the , Chloe Moretz, who plays a role “Abby”, the vampire girl. She makes the character “Abby” more attractive and her “Abby” expresses the relationship with her guardian well. Most of all, the CG in hollywood version makes the film look like real, so I can absorb well. In addition, it makes the vampire look dangerous. So I like the (2010) by Matt Reeves better than another film and even the original novel. But I love all of them!!

The movie titles followed by the year are not seen. I do not know how to fix it….

    Introduction of Starbucks.

When it comes to modern people and modern life, coffee became a necessity in their daily life. As a result, coffee industries and café culture are growing rapidly. In growing coffee industries, there was Starbucks at the head of these coffee industries and café culture. Started from Starbucks, many cafés are being established in our country steadily.

I am going to compare this introduction of Starbucks in Korea and China. Both countries brought Starbucks in each country but the way they introduced was different.

Menus, ingredients of coffee, and interiors are mostly same. However the exterior of a building shows big difference. When I visit a Starbucks of NYC last year, I was very surprised because I could not feel any differences in comparison with our Starbucks. In Korea wherever we go, we can see same Starbucks in other words, we see only one Starbucks. But in some big cities of China such as Beijing and Shanghai, people can see Starbucks harmonizing with China’s traditional structure. To me, these buildings give good impression that culture of the US and culture of China was mixed well. And they give more freshness and uniqueness. Even though in China, the Starbucks is being accused by reason of they were ruined its traditional culture and their market, but in my opinion when we adopt other culture, it is better to fuse each country’s cultural characters as much as possible rather to introduce other country’s original character itself.

As another student discussed about coffee culture, I would like to compare Korean culture with European culture regarding coffee.

I just heard that European people have a long mealtime. They talk a lot while eating meals. After the long mealtime, they move to a cafe and drink a cup of espresso at once. Then, they say goodbye. European usually have very short coffee time.
In contrast, Korean usually have relatively short mealtime. Instead, we have fairly long talking time in a cafe after eating meals. It’s very normal to spend over 2 hours in a cafe while talking with people.

When I heard this, it was very interesting. I, as a real Korean, also usually follow the pattern of Korean. Comparing time of the two, time in a cafe is usually longer. While drinking coffee, I have a long talk with my friends and spend a lot of time at one seat.

In my opinion, it is because we Korean consider that it is not courtesy to talk a lot to others while eating something. However, we still have a lot of things to talk to others, so we need to other places to do this. Then, a cafe can be the best place!

2.What made it better/ or worse

is a famous Japanese drama. This drama is consist of only 9 episodes but it is considered one of the most successful drama by actress and actors’ outstanding performance. Also it’s psychological description of the main characters received a lot of praise from the viewers. After a few years, Korean version of this drama was broadcasted. It was a largescale drama than the original drama and following all the latest trends. Moreover, it had a star-studded cast.
Both of them always got high viewer ratings, however, I think the Japanese version is much better. Because Korean version had terrible acting and terrible dialogue. In my opinion, fancy as other things might be, acting skills are the most important. The drama in Korea recorded the 30 percent viewer ratings but it was because of fans from a member of idol group who was a supporting role in there.

    2. What made it better / or worse
If I ask to somebody a question, “Do you know 식객?” Some people will answer like “Yes, it is a famous movie, isn’t it?” However, some people will answer like “Yes, it is a famous cartoon, isn’t it?” As both cartoon and film are famous, I watched the film, and I read the cartoon. Many people said that they prefer cartoon rather than movie. There are several reasons why they treat cartoon better. For example, cartoons stimulate our imagination so we could read it creatively. People who prefer cartoon more say that movies interrupt us to imagine some scenes. However, I have an opposite idea. I prefer movie than books and cartoons. Movies provide us a specific and vivid image and pictures. As 식객 is a story about cooking cuisines, I really enjoyed vivid scenes that shows cuisines. When we see the cartoon, we can’t see the vivid color, clear features of every dish, but movie shows us every picture specifically, so it pleased my eyes with many great scenes. That is why I think films are better than cartoons in this case.

    5. What is the value of cultural reproduction?

Director Bong Junho’s the latest movie, The Snowpiercer (2013) is based on the original french comic book, “Le Transperceneige”. However, this movie just bring setting that eternal-engined train races world-circulate railroad, and a broad outline that people who are in the tail section advance to the engine room. Characters, details of plot ware made by Director Bong in his own style. I think this movie is well made remake version. Reproduction don’t need to reproduce original plot intactly. If people who reproduce something instill their value and style, the work would not only be considered of reproduction, but also have another originality itself. In my opinion, good reproduced work is what is well added interpreter’s individuality. Expression of interpreter’s originality is the most important value of cultural reproduction and the reason why people enjoy reproduced works.
