Overexposure

October 7, 2014

Last year, Korea’s “overexposure law” came into effect. The law defines overexposure as “anyone who shows their bare skin excessively in a public place or exposes parts of the body that should remain covered and gives feelings of embarrassment or discomfort to other people.” The fine is 50,000 won. At first, many K-pop celebrities, including Lee Hyo-ri, worried that their choice of outfits might get them in trouble with the law, particularly since revealing miniskirts and micro shorts are so popular. Until now, however, no celebrities have been fined. Police emphasize that the law is intended to prevent “public nudity and public indecency.”

Last week, the Busan Film Festival decided to implement a dress code to prevent overly revealing clothing. Previously, some actresses, including Oh In-hye, Han Su-Ah, and Kang Han-Na wore clothing that must have angered enough people to convince the film committee that a dress code was warranted. “We’ve decided to switch the atmosphere in order to shift the spotlight to the directors, actors and actresses instead of some female celebrities who are new and receive more attention because of their revealing dresses,” said BIFF public relations manager Kim Jung-yoon. In other words, too much skin is a sin, ladies.

Students: What do you think? Choose ONE of the following questions:

1. How do you feel about the Busan Film Festival committee’s decision?

2. Do some Kpop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

3. Should people be allowed to dress in any fashion they want, even if it is very sexually suggestive?

4. Why do you think some people want to dress in overly-revealing clothing?

5. What effect does skimpy clothing have, if any, on children who often see entertainers as role models?

6. If some people want to go naked, should government have the right to prohibit them? Why?

    1. How do you feel about the Busan Film Festival committee’s decision?

I agree with BIFF’s new policy. The origin purpose of red-carpet event is to inform audiences of both directors and actors of the mainly invited films by showing their appearances. Recently, however, the event has been a quite changed because of CEMA(Corea Entertainment Management Association). After BIFF’s committee cooperating with CEMA, jobs of casting the celebrities became all CEMA’s business. CEMA became inviting new celebrities who are not relevant to the mainly films. Therefore, the press angle the spotlights to some female celebrities who are new and receive more attention because of their revealing dresses rather than the main celebrities. Therefore, BIFF is not a fashion show but a huge movie festival. It must be for lots of the movies.

i agree with your opinion. Main purspose of BIFF is informing films and praising actors/actresses/directors for their hard working. BIFF is not a fasion show but a movie festival. BIFF should not spotlight some female celebrities who appeal their body and get spotlight by their sexually exposed fashion not their film.

    2. Do some K-pop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

Every month, there are many kinds of music born. And every when single is issued, many singers, especially girl group, wearing sexually clothes to perform their music. For example, a girl group which named ‘Spika’ wears strip fashion. Even more they dance with very sexually pose. In these days more and more girl groups wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive. The meaning sexually suggestive clothes have some standard. Expose their leg more than 80% and try to expose their chest or belly. There are several reasons that I think some K-pop stars wear clothing too sexually suggestive. First they tried to expose their legs. Especially they tried to expose their whole leg because it can be ‘Noise’. They wear sexually suggestive clothes to be famous. This is one of marketing strategy to use noise. People first see girl group’s apparel in their music video clip. They saw that girl group wear sexually suggestive apparel which is skinny and silky. And those clothes become internet issue. Not even Boy groups. Second, Apparel culture is changed. So they have to expose their body more extremely. Society wants girls to be sexier with their body line, apparel. This is not limited not only girls but also boy groups. Girl groups have to get some beautiful body shape and boy groups have to get some health body. So after they made their body shape, they showed their body shape into their garments. For instance ‘Spika’ wear stripped fashion which cannot wear on daily life. ‘2PM’ wear very short shirts which can exposed their abdominal muscle. For these reasons K-pop stars trying to wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive.

The debate over whether “sex sells” in advertising and entertainment continues. Even though some research concludes that is does not, a common belief is that it does and thus, the abundance of sex and sexually revealing outfits on some celebrities. The market – where money is king (or queen) – dominants society; entertainment companies want to maximize profits and celebrities want to maximize earnings.
Could it be, however, that part of the reason for focusing on a celebrities physical form may sometimes be due to a shortcoming in the celebrity, i.e., their acting or singing skills are subpar? Take Paris Hilton for example (and I mean take her, away preferably). Having said that, even Beyoncé, who is an amazing talent, occasionally strips down to her underwear to perform. It makes one wonder what the next generation of celebrities might be wearing.

I think freedom of fashion should be guaranteed. Though it is hurt others feeling, freedom of expression more important. Because everyone is different. If one think certain clothes are sexual, it is just his thinking not others. So that’s too much making law which regulated artist’s clothing. That’s law can daunted musician. In k-pop, most idol group are affected by title music. If it is sexual concept, clothes also should follow music concept. Theirs performance is one of the way that express music lyrics. Stage is workplace to them, so we should comprehend them. There is no necessity for people to blame wearing sexual clothes musician. It is just performance.

    6. If some people want to go naked, should government have the right to prohibit them? Why?

Though I respect the freedom of those who want to go naked, I also believe that the government has the right to prohibit them. It can be considered in three ways-as the other’s perspective, perspective of the one who wears overly revealing clothing, and as a social problem. On the first one, like the ‘overexposure law’ has defined, public nudity makes people frown. In other words, it takes away other people’s right of not to see those clothes. They also have their rights to pursue happiness but overly exposed clothes just give them uneasy or even unpleasant feelings and violate the rights. And government has its duty to guarantee the people’s basic rights so they have reason to restrict it. Next, people who show their bare skin excessively might be in danger because of their clothing. They might become a target of sex offenders or perverts, so to protect the people’s lives those kinds of restriction can be happened. And lastly, it can be a negative social trend. If the government officially allows sexually suggestive contents, a trend which treats sex lightly might prevalent. It can be lead to some kinds of collapse of moral sense and also, it might hinder spiritual development of individual and society. For those reasons, it seems right for government to restrain the people who want to go naked to balance between people who want overexposure and people who don’t want that.

I agree with your opinion, but also the government uses sexual contents to change concern of the public from sensitive political issues. It is because almost every people attend to sexual cases rather than socially serious problems.

    4. Why do you think some people want to dress in overly-revealing clothing?

Suggestive clothing will not disappear forever, because it is possible that any people show their own fashion code such as overly-revealing clothing to express distinct identity, firstly. In other words, some people hoping to be a unique person can become that person by taking advantage of sexual clothing. Likewise, they usually use their characteristic dress code to distinguish themselves from ordinary people, because it is a dress code that human beings see before anything else. Next, people can attract more attention from others by wearing sexy clothing. There is a sexual desire which is every people has and nobody can restrict. Thus, some person such as a celebrity, model who requires the interest of the public gets it easily through suggestive clothes. Besides, sexual clothing makes people change to another person who has different image from before. That is, an actress who wants to obtain role performing a sexy woman is able to attain her aim by wearing suggestive clothing, since the public will be attracted by her sexy image. Lastly, it is now common that celebrities such as K-Pop stars wear overly-revealing clothing. Accordingly, some people will follow this trend to be satisfied because of resemblance with their idol. For these reasons, there is a person who wants to wear sexual clothing.

    5. What effect does skimpy clothing have, if any, on children who often see entertainers as role models?

Children imitate someone who they think as a role model very easily. I think overexposure has many problems to children. First, it provides for children to think that is essential to be a star. For example, children always see the stars who wear a skimpy clothes. And they think the clothes is important things for becoming their role model. Next, this thinking makes the kids imitate the stars. Children will have a obsession about their figure must keep like their role model. It will give lots of damage when they grow up as an adult. Finally, it causes precocious puberty. Nowadays, many kids blindly copy the idol stars. Children wear clothes like an adult and put their makeup on the same way like a star. It makes serious social problem with children without precocious puberty. So I think less wearing skimpy clothing can reduce some problem about children.

2.Do some K-pop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

For the past few years, every girl group compete their value with not their musicality, but their sexual body or obscene lyrics. For instance Hyeon-Ah’s recently released song “빨개요” emphasis her sexuality all the time during her song . Furthermore, some parts of lyrics remind that she sells her sex with familiar children song . And here’s another example, Korean famous girl group ‘Girl’s day’ expose their underwear continuously during their interview in university’s festival. Like this, almost every girl group in Korea sell their sex with their music. But before criticizing, we should think back us. Recently, most of Korean are exposed to every sensational thing and also we have enjoyed it. And girl group’s agency wants to satisfy our demand. So they imprinted their group’s exist with intense sexuality, furthermore they use noise marketing to attract our attention. The more they expose their body, the more public wants more intensive thing. I think we should make an objection to them and evaluate them critically. By criticizing this issue continuously, We can stop pushing them in to brothel in TV show.

    1. How do you feel about the Busan Film Festival committee’s decision?

: I think the committee’s decision is not reasonable. Committee said that anyone who shows their bare skin excessively in a public place or exposes parts of the body that should remain covered gives feelings of embarrassment or discomfort to other people. It does happen to. But, all of citizens have their own right of the clothes. Even though, some people who expose parts of the body give discomfort feeling to other people, it is their choice. Moreover, they are not giving harmful things to others. They just expose their own style. For this reason, I don’t agree with committee’s decision. If committee starts a high-handed policy about exposure, Korea is not a democratic state ever.

I think your opinon and reasons are very rational. However, overexposure can be felt unpleasant to some people, so I think some restriction is needed. Of course, Korea is a democratic state so each should be respected on the way of wearing clothes, but there is not only the right to be respected but the responsibility to respect others. Each should also respect others’ feelings, because they also have the right to enjoy the healthy culture. To fairly protect people’ rights, some restriction is necessary.

    3. Should people be allowed to dress in any fashion they want, even if it is very sexually suggestive?

We have a freedom to take the clothes at our choice. But I think we should regulate the fashions which provoke uncomfortable feelings. Someone can assert his/her right to dress freely but it is able to infringe on other people’s rights. For example, if my friend puts on their clothes with overexposure, I can understand her fashion style but elderly people shouldn’t accept it. Rather, they’ll feel shame. There is no one who has a right to violate other’s right. If so, they would control.

2.Do some K-pop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

I think they wear clothing too sexually, especially in these days. I remember that a few years ago, sexuality in K-pop was not prevalent thing. Only few female stars used sexuality in their songs. However, nowdays, sexuality is the most general concept of K-pop stars, and even male K-pop stars use the sexual concept, too. I think competition is the reason of sexuality in K-pop. As some K-pop stars who wear sexual clothes become popular, other K-pop stars also wear sexual clothes. However, because the public was already accustomed to previous sexual clothes, they want more sexual things. So, other K-pop stars wear more sexual clothes. In a result, that phenomenon has been intensified. To young people, sexuality can be a serious problem. It is so bad educationally. I think we need specific regulations about sexual clothing of K-pop stars.

    4. Why do you think some people want to dress in overly-revealing clothing?

I care to explain about this with a case of women. The reason why some women want to dress in overly-revealing clothing is to get man’s attention at once.
So, the more they think that they need the opposite sex’s attention, the more they want to dress in overly-revealing clothing and reveal a sex apeal.
Interestingly, this kind of desire for a sex apeal affects not only man but also woman. They can be target of envy by the same sex.
that is, they can be a ONE which is recognized from the world. In sum, women who want to dress in overly-revealing clothing and sexy girl’s a state of mind is an urge to be recognized.
Also, we need to look at the fact that a woman who has this kind of behavior pattern is related to father.
If she get a positive physical contact and enough recognition from her father since she was young, she can’t feel the desire to be recognized when she becomes taller.
But there is a lack of that, It can affect this kind of behavior pattern which is to dress in overly-revealing clothing.

Is all the men wanted to see naked women? I’m surely not. There some types that men love. So just showing women’s or men’s naked body isn’t sex appeal. But it is quite interesting that women’s kind mind has affected by her father. I want to know it about more.

    6. If some people want to go naked, should government have the right to prohibit them? Why?

I think there is no right that government prohibit people to wear overexposure clothes.
Because people in democratic country have right to freedom of body. That is, freedom of body includes right to wear their clothes freely. On the other hand, there is viewer’s right who hate looking overexposures. So this issue is very controversary problem. However, to solve this problem, enactment of law that fine fee to exposure peoples is too simple estimation. Because it is too obscure to judge overexposure or not.
Therefore I think we should have citizenship that should think again before wearing overexposure clothes and do not give excessive interest to appealing sexsual image as wearing overexposure items.

    2. Do some Kpop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion

Recently a trend of kpop star’s clothing has become too sexually suggestive. In some aspect i understand fasion is a kind of freedom of expression. But i am worried about that women’s body has been commercialized. As kpop star has exposed their body to the puplic they got soptlight. The spotlight is so important thing for celebrities that they want to appeal their body too sexually. Because of some kpop star who want to be soptlighted by sex appeal the puplic has become exposed to these kinds of sexually exposed fasion. So a strength of exposing is is higher. The puplic have expected more exposing. Then women have to expose their body and fir to the public’s tastes. For this reason kpop stars has commercialized her bodies herself.

    6. If some people want to go naked, should government have the right to prohibit them? Why?

Government has the right to prohibit people who want to go naked. Excessive exposure cause many problems like making potential sex offenders to real sex offenders, increasing health problems and making harmful effects on children’s emotional well-being. So government has right to protect people from these problems and preserve the order of society. In our society, almost people frown and criticize excessive exposure. But there are also a small number of people who have desire to go naked for acceptable reasons like artistic purpose. So people can’t blame unconditionally and government also has a right to respect their desire. Accordingly even though it can be hard, government should preserve the order of society and respect minority’s desire. Therefore in my opinion government should establish the strict law for prohibit to go naked but also make freedom to go naked. For example, accept one day to expose their body.

After K-pop become famous that many people debut as K-pop singers. Many singers was successful or failed. Singers appeal to public that singers’ personal attraction. Particularly, many sexual singers was successful. So, K-pop singers’ clothing is more short and sexy. I think music or performance is genre of art. so, singers’ clothing can be sexual to some degree. Also, if a sex appeal is one side of attraction of a singer, It can be released to public. But, singers must fail who only wearing short clothing and appeal sexual things. It is not right to want to wear short clothing for popularity. that’s similar ‘populism’. Singers must have a music ability and many attractions. What I have seen on pop music programs and YouTube K-Pop channels for several years was a number of girl groups with skimpy clothes. Surely, there were several groups who did not wear so, but most of idol stars seemed to attract more attention by dressing with such embarrassing costumes. Some people would say that it is not that suggestive and viewers can filter it out by themselves, however, excessive exposure can cause several problems, indeed. First of all, it can have a bad impact on children and adolescents who are in period of mental growth. They should be protected from sexually suggestive programs or features of celebrities, since they do not have enough abilities to recognize what is right and wrong. Another matter is that Korea’s national image can be damaged when such suggestive features of K-Pop singers are broadcast throughout the world. Indeed, celebrities’ excessively skimpy dresses should be banned at proper level.

    3. Should people be allowed to dress in any fashion they want, even if it is very sexually suggestive?

In Korea, a lot of people, especially girls and women, overexpose their skin. Some people gonna say that it is their choice, so it should be respected. Of course, choosing what to wear is their freedom, but if it is very sexually suggestive, too much exposure should be restricted. First, overexposure makes a variety of people frown and feel unpleasant. Choosing what to wear is one of ways of expressing someone’s thoughts and feelings. However, no matter what kind of freedom, it should be pursued in a range of respecting others’ feelings. When people see almost naked girls walking down the street, they feel quite uncomfortable and frown. Also, on television, K-pop girl groups dance wearing miniskirts and micro shorts and actresses wear dresses which cover a little part of their bodies and those things make people feel unpleasant. Thus, those actions which make many people feel uncomfortable should be restricted. In addition, in Korea, overexposure is not thought as fashion, but as commercializing sex, so it should be really controlled for much healthier culture. Of course, for some people, overexposure is their fashion. However, in Korea, overexposure is treated as commercializing sex and not respected as fashion. Seriously, it is the problem of level of mass culture. The public only pay attention to suggestive issues, so K-pop girl groups and actresses wear suggestive clothes to attract attention. Then, it becomes the trend and normal girls and women follow that. The culture made through this way is unhealthy. To fix this, overexposure must be controlled and it is necessary for the public to try to form much healthier culture. Clearly, it is quite important for all people to consider once again when they choose suggestive clothes.

In my opinion, the idea that people should be allowed to dress in any fashion they want, even if it is very sexually suggestive is not appropriate. I cannot agree with tha idea. Because firstly, one’s freedom can only be allowed when it doesn’t violate the other’s freedom. Every people has their own freedom of wearing clothes they want, but also they have a social responsibility to aware other people. Second, socially well-knonwed people(especially in the case of celebrities in public space) should be more careful in their clothing because everyone is watching them. All public is watching them, so they have to be more careful in their behavior or appearance. Especially in these days, the media is so developed and everyone can wathch TV, which can probably have bad effect on growing children. What if the young children is watching almost naked actresses in daily channel and accept it as a common thing? So in conclusion, people should be aware of what they are wearing, especially in the case of socially responsible people.

One of the strategies to be popuplar is wearing such sexy clothing and it can help to get peoples’ attention. Also I think there’s no criterias about the sexually suggestive, because even people look the same dress, some of people maybe think it is quite sexually, and some of people may think quite the opposite. When we watch television, we can often see the people who have too much expose their body, also most recent songs are strange and ashamed. Since film festival is a pretty good chance for them to show themselves and get attention and famous, lots of actresses often wear overly-revealing clothing. For them, an official meeting like Busan Film Festival is a perfect place for them to show and advertise themselves with their clothes. For example, new actresses who are obscure to public usually wears revealing clothing just to advertise themselves. That is, wearing overly-revealing clothing is a kind of strategy for them to let people know about themselves. Also, they are wearing it because they want to show off themselves or their bodies. In conclusion, reasons why some people wear revealing clothing are to advertise or show off themselves.

    2. Do some Kpop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

I think, recently, K-pop stars wear clothes that is too sexually suggestive, but I don’t like this trend. There are two reasons why I hate it. First, it is not good for children. When we watch television, we can often see the people who have too much expose their body, also most recent songs are strange and ashamed. If children are watched these things, they will learn them because early childhood blindly imitate anything. Second, it makes lookism seriously. Because of too much exposing body, it produces exciting in word about exposure such as bagel woman and honey thigh. Therefore, excessive exposure have a negative effect on our society, so I want to decrease too much exposure.

    2. Do some Kpop stars wear clothing that is too sexually suggestive? Explain your opinion.

As the industry of entertainment had grown more tough, companies are making kpop stars to show more parts of their skin in order to get the attention of the consumers. What we see through music programs has become more like a’playboy’ magazine rather than art. It makes me sad that they can only get famous and attention through wearing clothes that show too much of their skin. Also it is not just their clothing that makes them sexually suggestive. The way some Kpop stars ‘dance’ is very sexually suggestive, which I think should be rated R. I think it is a matter of having respect for the singers or artists that the entertainment owns. Since lots of Kpop stars were not made, only by their talents and creativity, making them become more dependable and relied on the Entertainment’s decision rather than their own.
