CRW 2 Moral Dilemmas

March 30, 2015

The source of morality varies among individuals, particularly in a pluralist society. For some people, it comes from religion; for others, it comes from a particular philosophy. In Western society, philosophers have debated for thousands of years whether an objective moral standard exists, but without agreement. When faced with a dilemma that tests our moral reasoning, how can we decide what is the right thing to do? Below are three moral dilemmas.

Task: Choose ONE of them and tell us what you would do? Explain your reasoning.

Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report*

You are head of a student council at a high school, and are faced with a difficult decision regarding a grade-twelve girl’s risky, last-resort choice. This girl is an honor student. All through her academic years, she has obtained straight A’s, has many friends and has never been disciplined by the principal. However, near the end of her grade twelve year, she fell ill with the flu and fell way behind in her school work. She missed three weeks of class, which resulted in her having to rush a report that would be worth 40% of English, a required graduation subject in her curriculum. She was so desperate about the report that she went online and passed off a report she found on that subject as her own. Her English teacher caught her and has referred her to you. If you enter on her academic record that she plagiarized, she will likely not be eligible to be accepted into St. Steven’s University, a school she has dreamed of attending all through high school and needs in order to fulfill her academic and future dreams.

Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber*

A madman who has threatened to explode several bombs in crowded areas has been apprehended. Unfortunately, he has already planted the bombs and they are scheduled to go off in a short time. It is possible that hundreds of people may die. The authorities cannot make him divulge the location of the bombs by conventional methods. He refuses to say anything and requests a lawyer to protect his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination. In exasperation, some high level official suggests torture. This would be illegal, of course, but the official thinks that it is nevertheless the right thing to do in this desperate situation. Do you agree? If you do, would it also be morally justifiable to torture the mad bomber’s innocent wife if that is the only way to make him talk? Why?

Scenario 3: The Pregnant Women*

A pregnant woman leading a group of people out of a cave on a coast is stuck in the mouth of that cave. In a short time high tide will be upon them, and unless she is unstuck, they will all be drowned except the woman, whose head is out of the cave. Fortunately, (or unfortunately,) someone has with him a stick of dynamite. There seems no way to get the pregnant woman loose without using the dynamite which will inevitably kill her; but if they do not use it everyone will drown. What should they do?

    # Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber
This episode is similar to a movie ‘Unthinkable’. And in this movie most of the citizens are agreed about torture him and even his family. The movie director asks about a question ‘what would you pick if you are in this situation. Torture or humanity?’ I think this mad bomber should be tortured as same as a movie for safe a lot of people’s life even if his wife’s innocence. Because, if the mad bomber didn’t tell anything bomb destinations, many innocent people would be died. Although some people who disagree with my opinion will say that his wife is also innocent too and I agree what they want to say. But we should take into considerate of how many people will be died because of one person’s action. Who will take a responsibility for many innocent people? Maybe nobody won’t take a responsibility even that saying you will be the same. However I didn’t make sure that his wife has pretty much related with husband who is mad bomber. So before torturing, prosecutor should take some information about their relationship and then take some action what torture would be progressed or not.

A few questions: How much torture is acceptable, how severe can it be, and who are we permitted to torture? If prosecutors are unable to extract the information after a short period of mild torture, would they then be permitted to increase the length and severity of the torture? Say one hour of moderate torture? Still if no information, would they be permitted to continue to increase the time and severity? Say several hours of intense torture? Still if nothing, could prosecutors torture the wife? The suspect’s children? The grandparents?

The most difficult question comes after society allows torture to become morally acceptable: Where are the permissible boundaries of torture?

Additionally, can we trust prosecutors to draw acceptable boundaries knowing what we do about the past abuses by government?

I totally know what you ask. It is always hard to discuss about your few questions. However I also cannot say the answer of those questions because I’m not a prosecutor and also judge.
But In my morality standard, government should use any kind of torture to secure another citizen’s happiness and wealth. I also don’t want to except minorities’ life since they weren’t do any bad thing (mad bomber’s wife & his children or grandparents).
But that’s what government do that secure citizen’s life and wealth.

    Scenario 3: The Pregnant Women

I would not kill the pregnant woman even though it could save much more people. My logical basis is as follows: doing the righteous thing is not a matter of counting the cost and the benefits. In other words, morality is not a matter of the result, but a matter of the process. Whatever the reason, killing people is a murder, a high sin. A person’s sacrifice without his or her consent is definitely violence and injustice. And I don’t think that lives of the majority are more valuable than lives of the minority. We can’t compare the value of human lives in terms of quantity. Otherwise, totalitarianism such as fascism can be justified. So we should not force the minority to sacrifice for the majority.

In Western law, necessity is not a justification for murder. But isn’t there a primitive animal instinct to survive? If you were in this situation with no alternatives and you felt certain you would die, would you honestly accept you fate and not do everything possible, including blowing her up with dynamite?

        April 2, 2015 11:13 am

If I were in this situation, I will desperately search an alternative way. But if there are really no alternative, I would have no choice but to accept my fate. We are human beings. I believe that humans are different from animals in that they have moral obligations and conscience. We have to do our best to keep humanity. Additionally, it is a clearly different matter from self-defense because she is innocent and have no intention to kill others. If the society permits a forced sacrifice of minorities who are innocent, I could be the next sacrifice.

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report*

In my opinion, sadly, the right thing is to follow the rules. Personal feelings should not come into play when one makes a decision. We have to keep in mind that anyone can be visited by misfortune. There are many people who cannot make their dreams come true for different reasons. For example, if a man who dedicated his life to helping the poor was reduced to beggary and tried to rob something, he will be punished without exception. Crime cannot be justified under any reasons and plagiarism undoubtedly constitutes a crime. Moreover, if the girl is accepted to the university she wanted to go, another student who wanted to go to the same university as her will fail to enter the university. Therefore, if I have to make this decision, I will abide by the rules of the school because I believe it is better for her to accept the fate and try to overcome it.

I chose this one but i have a different opinion with you. I have a question about yours. ‘After we follow the rules and the decision makes her let down to go to the university, if she is too pessimistic and call off everything, is it not the screw her future up?

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report

I think it is obvious that she is in a bad situation. However, I’ll enter the record that she plagiraized. If I don’t record the fact that she plagiarized, another problem will be happened such as accusation. Also, I think this is the chance to instill moral convictions to her. If I overlook her plagiarism, I should do the same thing to other students. Even if I don’t tell her the fact that plagiarism is illegal, she cannot understand the seriousness of plagiarism and can do it again. Instead of overlooking her plagiarism, I would like to explain her why plagiarism is wrong and the differences between plagiarism and quotation.

    Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber

Every behavior has some reasons. Maybe there are also some reasons for mad bomber’s behavior. At a guess, he has a strong dissatisfaction with the policy or has a requirment to government. However, no matter what the reason is, his behavior cannot be justified because he is demanding sacrifice of innocent majority to achievement of individual goal. So I think he should be tortured. At this moment, human right of the criminal come to question. Some people says human right of the criminal is also important. But if the criminal doesn’t respect other people’s human right, why we should respect criminal’s? And if torturing the mad bomber’s wife is the only way to make him talk, I will use that way. Although she is innocent, if minority will not sacrifice for majority, finally majority will be sacrified for minority. Of course, it doesn’t mean that minority should always sacrifice for majority. But in this case, majority is numerous innocent people and minority is mad bomber and his family. It is true that torturing is illegal but if people were in this situation and they or their family were in danger of death, how many people can show humanity to mad bomber and his family? I think torturing is a necessary evil in this case.

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report*

I will enter on her academic record that she plagiarized. It is too bad for her, but it just makes sense. The purpose can never justify the means. So her behavior can never be justified although it is essential for her future. Also, if I enter on her academic record that she plagiarized, she will keep on plagiarizing in the university. It is because she obtains a result without an effort. So she cannot do something herself because of being accustomed to plagiarism. As a result, ignoring her plagiarism is negatively influenced her future. If she is punished for plagiarizing other report, she can find enlightenment and it will be helpful her life. So I will point out her fault and lead to reflection. And then, I will help her devote herself to study.

I agree that punishing by recording can be helpful to notice the student’s fault. But I have a question about the thing you mentioned in line 7. Do you mean.. not entering record means Ignoring her plagiarism? or..just to make sure punishment should be given?

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report

If I were head of a student council at high school, I would not enter on her academic record that she plagiarized. Instead of leaving one young student’s fault as a persistent record, I would choose other ways such as voluntarty service or continuous face-to-face talk that can lead to an introspection. I know plagiarism is a serious issue of morality which is right next to the boundary of crime. But on the other hand, considering moral issue is not directly related to legal punishment, It is still not a crime that formal punishment is inevitable but a morality problem. So I would rather give him an enough room to self-reflect for himself than punish by recording. The biggest component in my decision is the place, school, this issue happened. Regarding school exists for education and the young student had no impure intention, there should be a chance to correct a mistake. So, educator need to start with teaching the magnitude of the problem and making the student realize that he’s not supposed to do this again. It is more than true that everyone should take responsibility for his own fault. But entering on record is not the only way of giving resposibility especially for the student whose record can be a big obstacle to start his new social life. Therefore, showing flexibility of school, I will give him other kinds of not easy activity such as counseling and volunteering.

    • proftodd permalink*
      April 3, 2015 9:32 pm

“young student had no impure intention…” I disagree as she knew exactly what she was doing. However, I agree that high school exists to educate the ‘whole’ student and looking at the totality of the circumstances is important. In this case, the magnitude of the transgression was high, i.e. 40% of the final English grade, but she had a legitimate excuse for missing three weeks of class. In the West, we are usually more lenient with first offenders if they have a clean record and were in difficult circumstances.
Having said that, she needs to be appropriately punished to prevent repeating the offence. Although I would be somewhat tempted to put this offense on her record, I might opt for alternative punishment if I knew a bit more information about her and whether she was the type of person who or would would not offend again. An alternative punishment could include having her re-write the report for a much lower score, a bit of physical labor at the school, and possibly a bit of shaming.

    Scenario 1 : Plagiarized Report

I will not enter on her academic record that she plagiarized. It is too severe to ruin her dream with the taglike record because of only one mistake. There is no one who does not make mistakes in their life. In particular, when people are in a hurry, the mistakes become much bigger and more serious. The situation she was in was so urgent that she could easily make a mistake. She had been sick and had to finish her report as soon as possible to graduate. In this pressing situation, she would lose her moment and copy the report without thinking what is right or wrong. Her behavior is not the one performed by her proper reason. In addition, she is only a grade-twelve girl who will start to step into the process of being an adult few months later. Her decision was likely to be unripe and immature even if she had been a diligent student getting straight A’s. Of course, though I admit she was in an urgent situation and young, I will not give her A. I gonna give her the lowest score in a class. Instead of having mercy on plagiarism, I will be strict in giving a score to evoke her not to do that kind of thing once again.

Do you mean you are not going to enter on her academic record that she plagiarized because it was mistake and she didn’t know what is wrong or right? I understand her feeling about losing her grade. She really tried hard on her academic records so far and did well. She must have frustrated because she might not be able to get an A. However, plagiarizing report was her decision and it was on purpose. She did plagiarized because she wanted to get a A! Didn’t she?

Your stand is interesting! That’s right, there is no one who does not make mistakes. But I think… well, if you do not enter her score, then what would you do in the same situation? You should get tolerant to another situation at that time, too. I think it’s unfair to other honest students.

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report
I think we need to let the mistake through only this time. All people know that the right thing is to follow the rules and punish her with letting down the university entrance. But, she has been a great student, studied hard, and tried to enter the university throughout her most school years. If she had not been sick, she would be a better student and still try to get into the university. As we overlook her mistakes, she will regret her wrongdoings and never repeat it again. If we understand her desperate feeling considering she must not have done like the behavior if she was not ill, she can be a better person with reflecting on herself. I think that mercy and tolerance to a young little girl is very important. When we give only one chance to reflect on what she had done, she would see her error and try to be a better person surely. To be honest, there are a lot of malicious crimes such as killing people or kidnapping. However, she did not commit the kind of crimes and I think she is able to come back to a moral person and never do it again.

  10. April 3, 2015 12:41 pm

Scenario 2 : The Mad Bomber

The first thing we should consider in this case is the intentionality of the madman. Through the context, we directly know that the mad bomber has intention to kill innocent people with no specific reason. It is kind of ‘hate crime’ and obviously, the mad bomber crossed a line. From the moment when the madman ignores the dignity of humanity, he also ignores his dignity and switches himself as animals by himself. So the solution of caring this type of criminals is tough punishment like torture and suppression. I agree with torturing the madman for saving innocent people, however, the text says that torturing madman’s innocent wife can be possible to this situation, and my answer is, absolutely no. Above all, we don’t know that the madman’s wife is connected with the madman’s crime plan, and even she does, we should struggle to reveal that the wife is forced by the madman or not. The process can be stuffy and difficult, but it is also the duty of the authorities. Even though torturing madman’s wife who is innocent in this case is the only way to solve this situation, it shouldn’t be accepted because there can be another option to deceive the madman like showing the screen of fake-torturing his wife.

    • Irin permalink

    # Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber

If I were a high level official, I will torture not only him but his innocent wife. This is because I believe that morality of commander is totally different with individual conscience. What I mean is that commander who is responsible for protecting nation or country needs to be dispassionate as well as cool-headed. So although he commits cruel behavior and violence, and if such behavior can be a way to protect nation, it can be justified. For example, a few years ago, I had watched a kind of war movie which was about Iraq war with America (I don’t remember the title exactly). At that movie, Iraq forces is camouflaging in a crowd to make it difficult for US forces to attack. Since US forces not only cannot figure out Iraq forces mixing in a crowd but cannot attack innocent people while many casualties of US forces occur. So commander unavoidably orders that shoots all people regardless of being killed to complete his mission and protect his soldiers. In this situation, can you criticize his decision? I don’t think so because like I said before, morality of commander fully differs from individual conscience and of course we must not force him to have morality like us. So if torturing mad bomber and his wife is necessary to find bomb, I will exert torture to him to find bomb.

In the West, we have something called ‘due process’ where an accused is considered innocent until proven guilty. We want a judge and jury to decide a suspects guilt or innocence after both sides have been given time to present the evidence. We do not want high level officials or prosecutors to decide guilt because when we look at human nature and history, we realize that some people have abused the justice system for their own benefit. In Korea’s not to distant past, prosecutors tortured innocent people who were then sometimes put in jail. Political opponents were put in jail. Do we want to return to this type of past.
Unfortunately, freedom isn’t free. It is built upon sacrifices. Benjamin Franklin said, ”People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.”
On a practical note, torture rarely leads to accurate information as the victim will say anything to stop the torture.

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report

The legislation must not allow no exceptions under in any circumstances. Likewise, it is also the same in school regulation. It is go against fairness if the exceptions are allowed. And, if the exceptions are allowed for some people, it can also cause some side-effects. I truly understand what a faithful student faces a difficulty. Everyone agrees that there is no one who does not make mistakes in their whole life. To give the latest example of this situation, Korean famous swimmer Park Tae Hwan have been accused of taking banned drugs. He has always excelled in self-management, and a faithful sportsman. However, nobody have never known what is factual about the happening, it is actually fact that he makes a big mistakes. For this reason, he may not participate in 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Someone say that there are some necessary exceptions for him because of considering his track record. But, before I mentioned, it must not allow no exception even though he said it is just a mistake. It also causes some opposition of other swimmers and loses public confidence and its authority. In four character idiom that said “Incurring a great loss by pursuing a small profit”. It is to say that allowing exceptions for some person or people pulls the trigger, which return to one’s head. In a word, it is really significant problem. Therefore, l feel like saying sorry for her situation, but it is a strong school regulation that make a school operate well. I also had experienced a similar mistake in past, so sincerely I want to say that she should regret her mistake and considers this situation as opportunity to do not make a similar mistake again.

Scenario 2 : The Mad Bomber

It is always difficult to make a decision about these kinds of problems. In my opinion, I can’t agree with that torture the mad bomber and his innocent wife. This opinion is not only in terms of humanity. I also understand and agree with that this madman is undoubtedly guilty and we don’t have to protect his right to endure many people’s sacrifices. But this is just one individual’s feeling and it should not be the authorities’ conclusion. Authorities have enough power to torture someone and this is one of the easiest and fastest way to solve the problem. But they also have enough power to use another ways to solve the problem, like sending bomb disposal units in doubtful areas, searching CCTV records and announcing to people to evacuate in advance. There is no only way, but it is just difficult to find another solutions. So, in position of authorities, they have to find another solution in full of degrees before to make a decision to torture someone. And also torturing madman’s innocent family to save other people, cannot be justified in any circumstances. Majorities’ right and minorities’ right are not the comparable things. I think we should not put prior to one of the two. So for these reasons, I think we have to find another solution to settle the problem instead of torturing someone.

    # Scenario 3: The Pregnant Women

If someone asks what ‘should’ they do according to the moral standards, I would say don’t kill her. Even though they have no other way except killing her to survive, murder is a highest level of sin. After all, it’s a question of ‘to kill or to be killed.’ But the problem is that the pregnant women has no intention to kill them. She was unfortunately in the way. So if they kill the women, they made her as a means to achieve a purpose. So it is totally against moral standards. However, on the perspective of the human nature, they should light a dynamite. In this case, it is acceptable to kill someone to save one’s life, because we all have an instinct for survival. Also, it is not sure whether the pregnant women will survive or not. If there is no way to get the women loose, it would be impossible for her to get out without others’ help. After everyone is dead, the possibility of her to survive diminishes. So it would be better to save someone than no one. Even though it is sure that she will survive if they don’t kill her, they also should light a dynamite. If we exclude highly strict moral standard that we must not do anything against our conscience, I think the next thing to consider is our instinct for survival because it’s all about life after all. Everything is no use after we die.

    Scenario 3: The Pregnant Women

I consider lots of thinking about scenario 3. In my opinion, if I choose one of situation, I will choose other people’s life. Because if I face the worst situation, I will act by instinct rather than doing rationality. Everyone think about importance of their own life. When people are placed in extreme situation, people will be in state of panic. For example, I heard a story about the experience of Japanese imperialism. The topic was how people can have mother’s affection when they were placed the limited situation. The result was shocking. Even thought they showed a little of mother’s affection, as time goes on, experimenters eventually choose their instinct rather than their mother’s affection. As reading the scenario 3, I thought lots of thing, but finally, I thought that when people faced the situation such as the scenario, most people ultimately cannot think other people except their own condition.

I think that I should write her record as truly as it was plagiarized even though there were no other special condition. It would be hard to do it and she would be so depressed of the result. However, I think that the condition that she experienced like catching a cold cannot be an exception. Everyone would have their own hardship when they wrote reports and even though they were able to plagiarize but not did it. She chose the way to plagiarize the report and it is her own responsibility to accept the bad result. In other words, she made the decision even if she could expected the dangerous consequence. Also, she cannot be passed only by her past diligent and sincere behavior. Imagine there was also another person who plagiarized the writing and that student was not a good student unlike the student above. It would be unfair if you pass the one who was good and not the other one who was bad. Maybe, I can suggest other alternative ways for the diligent student more and the lazy student less after giving bad record but still it is not accepted to make the decision unfairly. Therefore, although it would be very sad to her and also for me, but I think if a person do a thing that is illegible they should be paid by their responsibility.

I will enter her academic record that she plagiarized. It is so pitiful that she had a bad condition, but she should count her cost of plagiarizing. Even if she dreamed her entrance of university in her whole life, her decision is definitely wrong. She ought to have done her best to do report in right way. We, people, always try our best to keep our conscience. Our trying makes us moral person, and this trying should not wasted. So, it is unfair that she had same grade as other students that do reports in their own effort. Probably, I have personal sympathy to her, but sympathy should not get outdo fairness and conscience.

Before I go to tell my opinion, I want to let you know there is another solution that can make a madman talk without torturing his innocent wife. The way is that criminal investigator asks his wife to pretend to be painful by being tortured. It could delude a madman into thinking that his wife being tortured. If she refuses this suggestion, she will be not innocent person anymore. However, extremely, if they have to torture his wife practically to open his mouth, there is no choice but to do it.
Although torturing is illegal, a criminal investigator should be willing to torture his wife to save other people’s lives. There are reasons that I agree with the idea that illegal torturing should be allowed in this desperate situation. First, clearly, torturing and being killed is big different. Even if innocent woman be tortured, she may not dye whereas if not, hundreds people will be dead. Torturing people is illegal but terror, taking hundred’s people life is a way bigger crime.
Secondly, a number of people might be killed unless torturing a madman’s wife. Let’s suppose that a criminal investigator give up torturing innocent wife, because it’s illegal and immoral thing. As a result, bombs will be exploded and many people may die and be badly injured. If it’s happened, how could the investigator stand the emotional pressure that he drove hundred people to despair? The investigator may feel big guilty that he couldn’t save millions people and let them die, even though he could stop the disaster by torturing only one people.
Therefore, we should consider not only one innocent person, but also over millions innocent citizens and victim’s family losing people they love. Of course, we should not compel a personal sacrifice for the greatest number’s happiness unconditionally. Also we cannot tell that it is okay to use immoral method in order to just make better result. However, in this case (senario2), violence can be justified because it is only way to save millions people’s life which is irreplaceable primary value.

Do you know Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative? Kant’s first formulation of CI says: “Act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law.” CI insist that rather than see the results, to observe the moral law itself is right. I totally agree this. This utilitarian thinking can be dangerous.: it is fine take away one person’s right for more many people’s right. Let’s think about this situation. You are a subway station staff. But Metro has failed went off the track. There were a six workmen are doing. If subway did not stop, they all die. There is one way to train stops. the one huge and fat man standing next you. if you push him under train track, than the subway would be stop ( trip over him). in this situation, you can push him under train track? Do you have confidence that is right thing, without guilt? maybe you could not. The moral law is absolute. Anywhere, anytime. humans are not to be used as a means. It is wrong the wife to be used as a means to save the lives of others.

Though I agree with you, actually I can’t decide what is right. Every life of people is valuable, and no one can infringe it. And in this logic, the wife’s and the others’ lives are all important.. Umm..It’s too difficult to make a decision! I’m in real dilemma.

    Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber*

First, I’m agree to use torture. I’m going to talk about this, according to the utilitarianism. Before explaining my reasoning, I’m going to explain the utilitarianism meaning. John Stuart Mill said utilitarianism is good thing that maximizes satisfaction and a leader of utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham promote “the greatest good for the greatest number”.
In given situation, already planted the bombs are irreversible and they are supposed to go off and hundreds of people may die, if not he say anything. So I think that using extreme measures, torture, is better choice than hundreds of people be sacrificed. Because this choice make the death less, incomparably. Moreover, the hundreds of people are a just good citizen who have no reason to suffer a disadvantage, bombs and the mad man is already criminal and might be potential genocide. So, how the criminal dare to be in line with a good citizen, in the name of respect for man’s life and dignity.
In the same context, to torture the mad bomber’s innocent wife, if that is the only way to make him talk, can be done. Actually, while I’m saying this, it’s unsettling because ,as I mentioned before, sacrificing innocent person wouldn’t be right. It can’t be justified. But although this method won’t make society justice, I think ‘sacrifice for the many minority’ is currently best way.

I agree with your idea that “the greatest good for the greatest number”. This idea shares similar context with utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham.

Scenario 2 : The Mad Bomber

I agree torture which is in this kind of situation. If a number of person can survive by one’s sacrifice, it can be enough reason to accept this kind torture. It is similar to a question “Which one do you think more important, the rights of the many? or the rights of minority?”. I preferably think that it can be a problem about to sacrifice the many for the few. In the situation that the rights of the many is threatened, it is fair to sacrifice the rights of minority. but it is unfair to sacrifice the few themselves. In other word, the situation that the rights of minority is lost is unfair (it means that the few die) but the situation that the rights of minority is restricted is just. So I can agree to torture the mad bomber’s wife (but the torture should not make her dead) to save hundreds of people.

    Scenario 2: The Mad Bomber*

In my opinion, I agree with a high level official who argue that mad bomber or his wife be tortured to divulge the location. In this case, it is not totally justifiable to which action will be taken. Then, it is important to consider the benefits and the loss of each behavior. In order to protect the right of mad bomber and his wife, hundreds of people must be killed. On the other hand, if mad bomber reveal the location of the bombs by torturing him or his wife, many innocent people can be saved. According to utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham, he said “it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong”. He regarded the happiness of majority as important. In other words, individual dignity and value can be ignored only if the happiness of majority is endangered. Therefore, mad bomber or his wife has no choice but to be tortured to figure out the location so that hundreds of people are saved.

    Scenario 1: Plagiarized Report

Peronally, I will not pass plagriarized report because it is out of justice. Maybe, many people want to consider hers personal situation and give her a chance to recover this report. However, we have to think about what she really need to be as an university student. Althouth today’s college education is considered as a step of having perfect job, I want to believe university exist not for our future job, but for being muture civic awareness. Plagriarizing is a crime. When we stolen someone’s wallet, we are punished by name of law. She stolen someone’s effort. It means that she do not have the right for entering the University and she is not mature yet. So, I will give her F grade for her work.
