CRW 2 Sewol Tragedy One Year On

April 13, 2015

The sinking of the MV Sewol ferry last year is a tragic event in Korean history. The loss of so many precious lives, many of them innocent youths, is a scar on the collective Korean heart that may not completely heal but will hopefully not be forgotten. Although the families and friends must endure an unimaginable pain, all citizens should reflect on the causes of the event and force government to affect the necessary changes to business and government supervision so that another similar tragedy does not occur.
This article in the New York Times “Legacy of a South Korean Ferry Sinking” by Choi Sang Hun is a good read.

    7. Changes that have resulted from this accident

It’s already passed a year since Sewol tragedy occurred. Sewol tragedy wasn’t just a simplistic accident but it was a complex incident that reminds our society’s problems more. Since this accident was so huge than any others, there are several changes that government tried to avoid second handed accident and compensate victims or family members. The most significant change was break up Korean national maritime police and make another institution for security. This was the first announcement of president Park decided after making recovery policy. Although maritime polices didn’t act perfectly in that time, but changing the security institution is too quick decision for many polices who are not related to this tragedy and also this can cause losing their job or their work. Another significant change was special law for victims. This issue was the hottest argument between conservative parties and progressive parties. This special law is for Dae Won High school students who was engaged in accident can get plus points or specific choices to enter University or can get a tax favor for victims. However this specific law didn’t legislate actually because of public opinion. Since this tragedy has occurred a year but still there are some mistakes that can’t solved yet. The government should restrict security policy and introspect the problem composedly so that never could happen this kind of miserable accident again.

“The government should…so that never could happen this kind of miserable accident again.”
While I hope this kind of tragedy never happens again, untangling the collusive ties between government and industry will be a real challenge since they are so deeply ingrained. Economic growth still trumps safety concerns, so not until human life becomes more valued will necessary changes be truly made and enforced.

Even if lots of things have been changed, there are still problems that we might solve. After this terrible event, I relized that the governmnet could not ensure people’s safety anymore and I felt its helplessness.

I wanted to say the special law for Danwon high school students was not the one suggested by the deceased family. It was from one party’s suggestion..! Many people misunderstood the deceased family asked for it. However, actually, they didn’t request it. They just wanted to know why their children had died terribly.. Because of this suggestion, their pure mind and wish were distorted and they were damaged from the public.I hope the public look at the fact with a clear view.

    2. Stories of heroism

The Sewol tragedy is one of the most tragic events in Korea, and caused many casualties because of the government’s wrong response at that time. Although there are lots of people who deserve to be criticized, there are also lots of heroes who saved others’ lives in the Sewol tragedy. One of those heroes is Jiyoung Park who was identified the first fatality. She was a 22-year-old woman, and worked as a crew member in Chunghaejin Company which owned the Sewol ferry to support her family. Even though other crewmembers including the caption of the ship escaped from the ship before sinking, she tried to save Danwon high school students who were left in the ship. Also, she found and passed life jackets to students who didn’t wear life jackets. Although she couldn’t swim, she didn’t wear life jacket and passes it to students. She rescued passengers continuously in the state of filled with water to the chest. A student asked, “Why don’t you wear a life jacket?” to her. Then, she said, “I’ll escape from this ship after all you guys out.” However, she didn’t escape from the ship, and was found dead. Thanks to her courage, many students could be rescued. I really respect her courageous behavior and want to be like her.

I’m also same thoughts with you that she was the hero in that time. If i were in that accident, i couldn’t do that for people who didn’t know me and even i knew somebody, i couldn’t volunteer to do. Also i know a fisherman who safe a lot of people at that time. The fisherman saved a lot of people while other polices were trying to rescue lefted passengers. However he didn’t happy for it because he thought he didn’t save many students as much as possible. But I think he is the real hero even he is ordinary person. And i regret myself to saw his work.

Out of the confusing situation, she completely showed responsibility as a crew of Sewol ferry. When I first heard about her action, I was so impressed at her bravery. Why do these nice ones always become the victims..? I really feel sad..

After hearing about her, I thought if I were in that situation, I couldn’t do like her. Maybe she was also scared when ferry was sinking. Although she was still young, she showed composure and bravery. Without any doubt, she is a hero in Sewol tragedy.

I always think that if I were a crew in this ferry, could I help passengers instead of saving myself? I cannot choose one easily. I also respect heroes of Sewol.

    6. Punishment of captain and crew

Recently, the trial result for the captain of the Sewol ferry, Lee Jun-seok, and its crew is a controversial issue. Prosecution charged them with murder through willful nonfeasance and asked for the death penalty. However, the judge just convicted the captain of failing to take the steps required to save passengers in an emergency so the captain Lee was sentenced to 36 years in prison for leaving the ship and its passengers in a fatal crisis and other crew members jailed for about 15~20 years. Rather, crew brought forward commutation and pardon requests. Furious victims’ family members are reacting against lenient sentences. They claimed that the judiciary has to punish them to ensure the tragic incident would never happen again. I personally think the captain and crew ought to be punished properly. I mean, they must not ask for a reduced sentence or pardon. They should accept any punishment Department of Justice gives them. Of course it is difficult for the captain and crew to make their judgments rationally in the tense situation. But most of the victims died after the crew repeatedly urged them to stay inside the vessel. They say they had to wait for further instructions from the superiors but I am not convinced. It cannot be justified that they deserting a sinking ferry leaving behind young lives in the ship. They betrayed their duty to protect other lives and sacrifice hundreds of people in order to save themselves. My heart bleeds for many lives when thinking of many lives counting on crew and waiting for the order to abandon ship. The judicature has to alert people who deal with other’s safety to the absence of their responsibility by passing sentence upon the captain and crew. It makes those people work hard with a sense of mission and can contribute to preventing such disaster.

I agree with you, but sometimes I think that penal servitude is not a great idea. Nowadays, it is the best penalty in Korea, so nobody can do the death penalty. As looking the news, I think that people have to get a death penalty, and apologize to the victims forever..

While I find the captain’s self-centered cowardice shocking, I think the punishment is actually excessive. The court case seemed like a bit of a farce to assuage the public and scapegoat the captain. The Sewol should never have been allowed to sail after its dangerous redesign and certification by government inspectors. How does a ship overturn from a sharp turn? It obviously wasn’t fit for service. Anyways, the captain will end up dying in prison after having spent the rest of his miserable life thinking about what incredibly poor decisions he made. Also, I think the prosecutors demand for the death penalty (for a non-murderous act) was probably an example of political grandstanding. No one has been executed in Korea since 1997. BTW, I admit to a Western cultural bias where we think justice is best decided by a disinterested third party who can reach a decision without being swayed by emotion.

I totally agree with you. I also think that the government intended to lay the blame on only the captain and Yoo Byung-eun, but not to take responsibility for the disaster.

    • April 17, 2015 12:55 pm

Same with you. Yoo Byung-eun are guilty, of course, but i think the one to blame the most is our government because although they should take responsibility for the accident, they avoid their duty and responsibility.

    10. Oryong 501 sinking (another similar tragedy)
The sinking of Oryong 501 happened in the Bering Sea on December 1, 2014. People felt more miserable about it because it is similar to the Sewol tragedy. Of the 60 people abroad, 27 people were dead and 26 people were missing. The exact cause of the sinking is still unclear. The shipping company argues that it was because of high waves and plugged drainage holes. But some experts assume that the ship was battered and dilapidated. The families of the deceased claim that the shipping company pushed ahead with sailing despite of bad weather. The captain of Oryong 501 and many of the ferry workers are unqualified like Sewol ferry. Even there were no chief wireless operator nor second engineer. Unfortunately, the search was abandoned too soon because of the floating ice, strong winds and high waves. The shipping company and the government have not taken responsibility for the accident and cared for the families of the deceased notwithstanding their demonstration.

Korean law requires a qualified engineer to be onboard fishing boats, but engineer’s salaries are high. Most ships still do not have a qualified engineer for if mechanical trouble occurs. Government is slow to enforce rules, so workers’ deaths may still continue to happen.

Right. The shipping company and the government have not taken responsibilty for the accident and just ignored, passed it. I don’t understand why they avoided the deceased family’s wish to know all the fact. What is the one they try to cover? What is the one they are scared of?

    9. Ferry workers on temporary contracts

A year ago today, a tragic event happened in korea. Because of Sewol tragedy, hundreds of people lost their lives. Most of victims were high school students. And there were ferry workers who contract temporarily. Three close friends were working on Sewol ferry as part timers. According to their family, when accident occur, three young man said that they should hand over life jackets to passengers. After that telephone conversation, family lost contact with them. Unfortunately, they were founded dead in water. They would try to rescue passengers until they were exhausted. But most people don’t know well about their death and even funeral expenses were not provided for them because they were not emplyees but just part-timers. However, they are also innocent victims so compensation for damage should be implemented. Above all, most important thing is that we should remember them as much as we should remember student victims and other victims. And we have to hope their happiness.

But the pain other victims are suffering would never less than student victims. we should also pay attention to the other victims as well.

    11. (my opinion) The Truth of This Disaster.

Personally, I think, we shoud think why this tragic accidend was happened. Some people insist that it is like car accident and many expert agree with. However, we have to consider essential factors of this accident. So, I want to talk about governmental role of public safety. On Constitution of Korea, goverment have to keep public from danger. But when we analyze the accident, we can easily see the fact that the Ship Safety Act didn’t work efficiently. the Sewol was too old to sail the ocean, especially in Yellow Sea where tidal current is the most fastest in Korea. The Seol was built in 1996 and sailed ocean about 18 years. Many expert said its lifespan as ship was over. However, Chung-Haejin comapany which was company of You Byung Un bought the ferry and reconstructed. It was already old but Government approved it as a new ferry. The fact was starting point of disaster. Before 2012, governmental standard banned this ship but after government change the law, the Sewol was approved as new ferry. It is very strange fact and our safety law for ships killed our people. I think its first responsibility is not on captain, but on Government. This is because they approved this ship for sailing even though they already knew that it can be very dangerous. Therefore, we should think about our governmental resposibility for safety.

    • April 17, 2015 12:52 pm

I agree with that the starting of this tragedy came from the government as they allowed the old ferry which should have been discarded to make a extended and new ferry. And i think the government also did not perform their duty for saving and guaranteeing safety as they had not have proper control tower. The absence of manage made gigantic accident.

I agree that the disaster is clearly from the government’s uncareful actions. Thus, when I see some people insisting that it is like a car accident, I quite feel upset. I am curious that why they don’t look at the covered fact. More thinking and more attention would be the light for the decased family..!

      11. Safety frigidity
Sewol Tragedy was a tragic accident and it still is. Not only people who are directly associated with this event such as friends and families, but also who just heard about it moaned in pain of losing precious lives. Although inspections and suppositions about cause of this tragedy have been arisen on the surface, it has not been clarified. Truly, one absolute cause does not exist in this kind of tragedy. Among many assumed causes, safety frigidity is one of the most severe one and it pervades in our society. When first report of the accident reached mass media, lives of passengers were most crucial issue. Despite the all concerns, however, over three hundred lives have been lost. Why? Firstly, even though Sewol ferry have been proved appropriate for sailing, it was not truly so. It was remodeled after being used 10 years and approved by the government, by the weak law. Also, overloading has not been on the question before sailing. In addition, according to the report of the survivor, the first announcement of captain after ominous sound was “Stay where you are.” And most of passengers stayed. Although they noticed that something went wrong, almost every person on the ferry including crew members was not truly aware of the situation and they couldn’t do anything. Some of the crew members were even unqualified. These facts show safety frigidity of our society. Everyone thinks that “Bad things are not going to happen to me!” And sometimes, people think raising doubts about safety is awkward. However, depreciation of safety is the most dangerous factor in some accident. The inspection of instruments and qualified members for work has to be ensured by law and citizens also must not depreciate safety issue even if it is not easy because sometimes they seem mundane things. If there were sufficient safety inspection of the ferry and crew, Sewol tragedy might not happen. Workers on the board of inspection might know that it was not safe enough. But they didn’t raise a question because they always did that. This custom is the biggest problem and has to be eliminated.

    3. Government response to disaster (at that time)

Even thought Sewol disaster had happened a year ago, Korean government has been harshly criticized for responding to the tragic event. There are several reasons why the government should be blamed for response to sinking of the ferry. When the first time this event happened, government announced that all passengers were rescued. However, after a few minutes later, this announcement turned out to be a lie. There were still over hundreds students in the ship just waiting relief workers. In addition, the government had made all media announce that hundreds of rescue workers and navies were mobilizing to save people. Desperately, this news was also a lie. Even if telling a lie is the way to relieve people’s mind, giving a false on pubic broad cast is obviously fault. Second, government didn’t try to save people’s life by all means. The primary subjective of government is to protect people. However, the government didn’t make possible solution promptly even if they received terrible news. In the act of investigating main cause of the event, lots of problems related with corruption had emerged on the surface. For this reason, the groups of government had been busy to continue evasion of responsibility instead of starting salvage work all the way. The government seemed to conceal the true story behind this tragic event. Therefore, people have considered the ways to deal with Sewol disaster as deceitful policy.

    • April 17, 2015 12:46 pm

It is so sad that nobody knows why the tragedy happened and how it has been and will treated. Corruption with government, with a leading enterprise, with related industry has came to the surface until now. As you said, the government should reveal the true story about the Sewol accident.

    11. My idea.

Elite panic: the concealed information or information manufacturing by elite so as not to throw people into confusion under the protection of national confusion.

This theory came out in the wash, in the sinking of the MV Sewol ferry last year which was a tragic event in Korean history. It is also conclusion that chairperson of the committee drew a decision about the recent nuclear power plant explosion in Fukushima, Japan. The report concluded by committee include not to publish the predicted data quickly from the radiation and never disclosed to the worst case scenario, forcing some victims and category.
Unfortunately, ‘the Korean elite’ often panic whenever tragedy occurred and then they avoid taking responsibility. The president of the nation must have ability to integrate people in particular in these tragedy. This is the leader. People do not want for them to save victims’ life or take full responsibility. But until now so called Korean leader make more scar on the collective Korean heart.

    • April 17, 2015 12:42 pm

I think that Korean government or people in charge are afraid of taking responsibility. i agree with your opinion. A great leader is a person who is responsible for a national sadness.

    1. Personal stories of victims and/or family members (Remember to be respectful)

It is been one year since the accident of Sewol ho was happened. So a memorial service was held yesterday to commemorate those who were sacrificed by the accident. And many people posted a message to a memorial service. It was a sad day for the entire nation. Meanwhile, we should never forget some heroes of Sewol ho. I want to tell about personal history of Park JI Young who saved many students in Sewol ho. In her childhood, her father died of cancer. So she had to earn a living alone and supported her mother and sister. She took a break off school and became a crew to owe them a living. And she had a plan to go back to school. However, her plan could not happen because of the accident. She could survive at the time of the accident. She did not go out a vessel to save students by having sense of responsibility. She took live vests from 4th floor and then gave them to students who were in 3th floor. She said “I got out of a vessel lately after you escape from the vessel.” She did her best to secure students and eventually she could not escape from the ship. Although she could think only about herself and get out of the ship alone, she tried to save students. Therefore, we have to remember her behavior and responsibility. And the accident like Sewol tragedy must not happen again.

    • April 17, 2015 12:39 pm

Whenever i get the news or videos, i still feel sad. Especially, if the initial countermeasure had been great, a lot of passengers such as young students would have been saved. I cannot imagine how they were afraid of and painful. Pray for them.

    11. My idea

‘Sewol tragedy’ is the sort of thing that was predicted as the tragedy was a complex of Korean chronic troubles such as overloading for efficiency and absence of control tower. Unfortunately, all things related to the tragedy had gone wrong from the beginning. First, there was a mechanical problem. Building an extension of the ferry was an impractical plan and it made the ferry’s stability weaker. I think this is clearly related with giving something a lick and a promise, which is Korean usually do. And, overloading which is rampant in Korean society as overlooking something for the more or most also led to the accident. Moreover, this shows us how selfishness makes a huge and irreversible accident. If the ferry crew had tried to save passengers, following the duty of cabin crew, and they had not escaped without any proper announcement, most passengers and students might have been still alive. I strongly believe Korean society should be changed into healthy and clean society. Pervading overlooking something or someone, selfishness neglecting own duty, evasion of responsibility, and making victims as attackers must be got right. We all know that our society is not healthy now. From this moment, we have a voice to make it out clear as the tragedy like Sewol could not happen again.

    11. An immature responses to Sewol Tragedy (My idea)

I want to talk about an immature response to Sewol Tragedy. Because of Korea’s rocky modern history, the harmony between peoples seems to week and dichotomous way of thinking is often observed in this kind of events. At the beginning of Sewol Tragedy, many Koreans were deeply frustrated about the reality of Korea society and were seriously worried about the safety of the people trapped in Sewol. However, because of the incoherent report between mass media and goverment, and more seriously, rescue operations meet with a difficulty so the situations doesn’t look like getting better, the families of the deceased were rage and they started to remonstrate about the goverment’s incompetent action.

During this time of chaos, some immature responses happened here and there. The rescue progress was changed to long-term plan, The substance of Sewol Tragedy was slowly overshadowed by mass media. In this situation, some people who cannot distinguish the real and self-will showed an immature responses to Sewol Tragedy. On September 4th, 2014, in 광화문, the part of 일간베스트 members were demonstrating by name of ‘Overeating Demonstration’, aganist the hunger strike of the bereaved family. They sit next to the bereaved camp, ordered the pizzas and hamburgers, and ate it with mockery to the bereaved. Why they do that? The members of 일간베스트 were just focused on political perspective, especially on the side of far-right, so they misunderstood why the bereaved family was doing that. This case showed plainly that In Korea, there are people who have little regard for the feeling of others and are just tried to make an ‘hater’ to solidify their own political view. The point is, that Sewol Tragedy is not a win&lose game, but a national disaster.

Moreover, On July, 2014, one blind-drunken man went to the police station. He entered the police station and started to say “you fucking useless, can’t save the victims of Sewol Tragedy!” with rampage. Finally he was put on stay of execution with obstruction of justice. This case symbolizes the distrust to the goverment, but It is not a actual solution, but the waste of individual and goverment’s power. Also, It is an another type of suffering the familes of the deceased. If this cases are spotlighted on the front pages of mass media, people could considered Sewol Tragedy as annoying and boring everyday’s problem and eventually the essence of the Sewol Tragedy could disapper with no change.

Although It has been one year since Sewol Tragedy happens, the problems are not solved and still it needs more time to recover the scars of the bereaved. Everyone knows that this tragedy cannot be handled in short-term, and Everyone recognizes that Korea society should be changed to happy, safe, and justice country. It is true that many Koreans are exhausted by arousing covers of mass media, but it is also true that Koreans never give up this situation. This is time to stand face to reality, understand the situation, and empathize with other’s pain. Do not deeply sink into the surface of cases, do not forget the essence of phenomenon.

I want to tell a touching story about the late Mr. Lee Da-woon who was one of the victims of Sewol tragedy. The late Mr. Lee Da-woon was a Danwon high school student and his dream was to be a singer-songwriter. When the family of the deceased got his mobile phone back, there was music recorded by the late Mr. Lee Da-woon. It was the unfinished song just over two minutes that he had made for himself and recorded playing a guitar. In order to achieve his unfinished dream, the bereaved family requested a famous singer, Shin Young Jae to complete the song which the late Mr. Lee Da-woon had liked most. Shin Young Jae tried hard to get his music done in the range of saving its original form. He gave a title, “My Dear” to the song and announced it. When the song was out, a lot of people felt sorry for the late Mr. Lee Da-woon’s unfinished dream and was deeply moved at the behind story. However, later, there happened the controversy that “My Dear” plagiarized Mint Boy’s “A Lullaby” When the family of the deceased knew the fact, they visited Mint Boy and said sorry to him. Finally, Mint Boy decided to donated the song for the late Mr. Lee Da-woon. Like this, in the song “My Dear”, many people’ mind to commemorate him and his precious dream is included. Whenever I listen to music, I feel sad and imagine how much the late Mr. Lee Da-woon felt happy if he knew that his incomplete music had been finished by his favorite singer. I hope more people listen to the song and remember his dream and Sewol tragedy.

    Punishment of captain and crew

It’s been a year since Sewol Ferry disaster. The trial of captain and crew of Sewol ferry is currently underway. Besides, many people point out that punishment about maritime police and officers who missed golden time to save casualties falls short of people’s expectation.

Captain, Lee jun seok who escaping at first, leaving passengers alone was sentenced to thirty five years’ imprisonment after five months trial but he was not recognized a charge of murder. On April, 28, whether he made an in-ship escape announcement or not will be a key from a charge of murder in the court of appeals. The other crew members were sentenced to from five years to thirty years imprisonment. However, since real owner of Sweol ferry, Yu byeong eon died, investigation and trial about his family has been slow. In addition, prosecution indicted yu byeong eon family and people close to him liability for the accident but they were acquitted. Among maritime polices who failed rescue, only 123-ship director was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and other officers or policies received slightly penalty such as a reduction in salary and reprimand.

Like this, it’s been a year since Sewol Ferry disaster but investigation and trial is still underway. To appease casualties’ soul, proper punishment and accurate truth would come

    6.punishment of captian

‘Sewol tragedy’ has a lot in common with the sinking of the Kongkoreu Dia which was a luxury cruise ship of Italy. Kongkoreu dia ship went down after the collision with a rock caused by the captain’s mistake. But the captain run away in a hurry without taking any measures with the passengers inside. As a result, It made 32 people dead and the whole affair ended in tragedy. The basic common ground is the fact that the irresponsible conduct of captain worsend the damage. Both captains escaped from the ship when it was sinking. Consequently,Captain of Kongkoreu dia was sentenced to 2687 years’ imprisonment whereas captian of sewol was senteced to death. In sewol-ship’s case, however, the fact that korea doesn’t exeucute the death penalty in paractice became a bit controversial problem. Because it means that death penalty is quite the same as life imprisonment so far. According to this, a few people are still criticizing it with rage that the captain should be punished more severely. I guess everyone understands that feeling. However, the sad truth is that there’s no other alternative. And even though the government will sentence him more severe punishment, there’s no guarantee that the punishment could ease the pain. So, as a member of the public I feel so sad about this tragedy and just want the real facts are compeletely revealed soon. I hope and pray that this kind of incident that remained huge shock and pain will not happen again.

    11. Your idea

I remembered the morning when the news about a sinking ship was announced. At first, it was reported as a small accident that looks like being solved soon. However, after 2 hours, this became the biggest disaster in this history. While watching the news I felt so miserable that I can’t do anything but watching the situation. After the disaster and watching government’s doubtful avoidance I felt so furious about them and also for myself because what I can do was just shutting down my lips. And, now I am watching the people who start to criticize the surviving families with distorted truth.
I want to know what kinds of people who make jokes about the disaster which dominates in the internet. They criticize families of Sewol tragedy and advocate the government wrong action. At first, I tried to consider their opinion from conservative people who wants to protect the nation value but after a protest provoked by ‘Ilbe’ I couldn’t say anything and my trial was so generous for them. They just look like doing the protest for their pleasure which is earned by other’s sorrow. I think not only punish the captain and crew in the Sewol ship but also these people who distort the truth of the tragedy and mock the surviving families.
Also, I think that the government should act something for the families. Even though one year has passed since the disaster, what I have heard was the president’s endless meaningless speech and quarrel between parties with a law for the families which was actually for erasing government’s responsibility and avoiding the criticism from public. The government makes just noise scandal with Yoo Byung-eun which was not desired thing by the families and not helpful for looking into the real causes about Sewol tragedy. Still, even yesterday, there was no actual plan or presenting the truth but the sentimental speech from the president.
I understand and want to believe that it is even hard for the president to deal with this huge disaster alone. However, why does the government not open the data about that day and just manipulate it? Why does the government not stop and even look like helping the people who try to ridicule the families? But the most miserable thing is still that I can’t do anything in this stuffy situation. What I can do is just try to remember the day and keep open my ear for the families. I really hope to make some action together for this situation.

I also remembered the day when Sewol tragedy occurred. At first, the news reported that every student, teacher and people in the ferry were saved safely, however the truth is totally opposite. I wondered how this kind of funny situation was made. I thought it was a shame.

    7. Changes that have resulted from this accident

April 11, I went to Gyeongbokgung with my friend to see the cherry blossoms. there is a The Blue House next to Gyeongbokgung. but something is strange. the Cherry promenade was blocked by many police, which is must be open to citizens. Indeed there was a lot of police here and there. friend and me so curious, so asked to the one police who seem in high position. The police did not tell me anything. and that night, I found the reason through facebook. that night, there is large demonstration in front of The Blue, condemned president. Frightening thing is the fact that, there is no press reported that situation. rather, many people said that Facebook is false and it is crime to say such a false. but I knew that it’s true because of I saw the scene in persone. I realized that a lot of truth have been covered in this way. The media covering the work and distorts the truth, there is nothing the change compare to one year before. If there is something changed, compared with a year earlier, maybe it is amount of raising money. one years ago, there is much raising money, but today it is all gone somewhere, no one knows where it is used.

    11. Your idea (memorial ceremony of Sewol ferry with violence.)

2014. 4. 16, unimaginable and tragic accident was occurred in cold oceans Korea. Above all things, many people died including young students, and it also have caused acute pain to the bereaved family because some missing people have not came back to their family still. It is a really heartbreaking story and a deplorable accidents to all of the people, who know a never to be forgotten day.
Then after a year, 2015. 4. 16, there was a memorial ceremony in Gwanghwamnun Plaza Seoul. A lot of people have commemorated the memory of the deceased people and consoled the bereaved family, who have unutterable sadness and pain. Although, many people shared a severe pain and mourned the death, there is some hindrance, which interrupt this pure memorial ceremony.
Violent anti-government demonstrations transubstantiate the purpose of the memorial ceremony of Sewol ferry. Some demonstrators of the Sewol ferry let down the police officers’ tires and break down the walls of the car. Besides, they are violent the police officers, also they push the police officers on the top of a bus and force their way to get out of the lawful demonstration place. It is not a proper memorial ceremony but a riot. We should doubt theirs sincerity.
Of course, real bereaved families do not participate this riot, and the police officers also protect themselves by spraying the capsaicin at least. But, mentioned before, some demonstrators transmute the purpose that make a safe Korea into the violent demonstration. We also ask them whether this demonstration is for the memorial ceremony or for overthrowing the government. If it is for the memorial ceremony, it must keep within bounds and follow the social order.
Therefore, what I’m saying is that we’re not clear this situation because there is a lot of unconfirmed information. So, we should develop our abilities to grasp the point with penetrating the truth or fact. And, l really curious about your opinions too.

Questionable business practices by Yoo Byung-eun

Yoo byung-eun was a leader of ‘Guwonpa’, which is considered to be a heresy, and a president businessman of Chunghaejinf shipping company operating Sewol ferry. He was also pointed out to be a person who caused a tragedy of Sewol ferry fundamentally. This is because that he is the owner of the company which possesses Sewol ferry, therefore he is responsible for the accident. If he had not committed any illegal crime but he strived to manage sewol ferry, he would not have ran away from the police. However, he had already made many illegal acts. At first, he lived a luxury life using lots of money he took from many believers of Guwonpa. He allured them with a religious speech in Bible to make more offerings. In addition, he evaded a huge amount of taxes. Although his profit was from various routes like Chunghajin company and religious group, he embezzled public funds which was supposed to be used for maintaining Sewol ferry. Nevertheless, some people raise a question that why government concentrated on only Yoo byung-eun by media although it is common that many presidents of famous corporations have committed these kinds of illegal acts. They think that this was a strategy of a government to shift the responsibility of sewol tragedy to Yoo byung-eun. They said that the police did not arrest him intentionally to turn people’s attention from government to Yoo byung-eun. Many multiple aspects including government’s act and Yoo byung-eun’s illegal crimes are responsible for Sewol tragedy.

    7. Changes that have resulted from this accident

I think one of important changes that have resulted from this accident is people’s attitude. Actually, people always didn’t think about danger. For example, Pangyo accident also happened because of people’s lack of risky. However, after happening that Sewol accident, lots of people start to conduct some activities that protects their safe life. Government implement various institutions about ferry and punish people who are related to this accident. Of course, it was the worst accident in Korea. But, in conclusion, because of this accident, people who had safety ignorance recognized importance of safety in their life.
