CRW 1 Food

September 14, 2015

For some people, food is merely “fuel for the fire,” a way to get the needed nutrition to energize the body and mind. For others, food is much more. It is a warm blanket on a cold day, a kind touch when one is gloomy, a dash of excitement to share with friends. How does food make you feel? This week, let’s talk food.

Students: Choose ONE of the following to write a paragraph. Don’t forget to read other students’ ideas and comment. Include a picture (or a link to a picture) if you like.

1. What is your favorite dish? Describe it. How do you feel afterwards?
2. If you can cook, what is your favorite dish to prepare? Why?
3. Do you have a comfort food? (‘comfort food’ is food that we eat when we want that warm feeling of Mom’s home-cooking. For example, one of my comfort foods is Mac’n’cheeze.)
4. Do you have a favorite foreign food? What is it? Describe it. (picture please)
5. Does some food have too much salt, sugar, fat these days? Explain.
6. What is the most unusual food you have ever seen? Have you tried it? Would you try it?
7. How important is food culture in making or maintaining relationships in Korea?
8. Is it wrong to criticize another culture’s food? (for example, eating dog meat)
9. Compare Korean food culture with the culture of another country.
10. Your idea

Do you like a pizza? I guess there are many people who love pizza including me. But, if you want to care about your health especially for the amount of salt and fat , you’d better avoid pizza or eat only one piece of pizza. Few days ago, I read an article about the nutritive components of pizza. The report was surprising that just one piece of it has 655.8mg natrium and 6.7 saturated fat! It means that if you eat 2 or 3 pieces of it you will get over the recommended nutrition standard for a day. Since I ate 4 or 5 pieces of it when i ate pizza, I got shocked. So, I wanted to share the information with you who don’t know the information. I think that for the right to know of customer, pizza companies should represent the nutrition information on their pizza product to their customers.

    8. Is it wrong to criticize another culture’s food? (for example, eating dog meat)

    http://occupyforanimals.wix.com/meat#!why-love-one-but-eat-the-other/c17gn

Now that the food of other culture is related with cultural relativism, a concept that cultural norms and values derive their meaning within a specific social context, it is absurd that the food which is different from our culture should be banned. But, I know that it is not the simple agenda. When Brigitte Bardot, a French actor and singer, said that Koreans who eat dogs are savages, it caused public outrage in Korea. But now a number of animal lovers in Korea understand and support her remark. They claim that it is not different from cannibalism, the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings, because dogs are our friends or family. So, if eating dog meat belonged to cultural relativism, cannibalism could also belong to it. The counterparts, however, assert that cattle, pigs and poultry can also become our friends or family. Then, it is nonsense that eating other meat, we should not eat dog meat. Both sides look reasonable. I can’t be sure whether eating dog meat is right or wrong custom. But I can be sure this; although I can agree with animal protection activists who don’t eat any meat, I can’t agree to absurdity with which eating other meat, other activists claim we should not eat dog meat.

I completely agree with you. Yes, It is contradictory. Moreover whenever eating dog meat is controversial, I think ‘Foie gras’ is more cruel, inhumane. And I think eating ‘Foie gras’ would be criticized as much as eating dog meat because of the way it is made!!

      I can’t agree more.
Some ignorant people say that cows are for food, pigs are also edible, but dog are friends…How arrogant categorization! This opinion is purely based of human-centrism and regards the nature as the tool of human. Animals have their meaning of existence in themselves. No man can grade their dignity by calling one is born as friends for human, and others are born to be eaten. Absurd.
I sometimes search this theme on Instagram, using hashtag “#dogmeat” and as expected, there are ample of argument. When one posts the picture of dog meat, then a “vanguard” leaves non logical comments or even some bad words, including tags like #dogmeatiscruel.
And then, many dogmeat objectors literally “invade” that post coming through the tags.
Usually their assertion are based on some serious bias like racism, orientalis or cultural-supremacy. Not to say that the most of them also love other meats. Guess what, it’s hard to find vegan in real life, isn’t it?

I agree with you. I love dogs, but I think that it is nonsense to criticize Koreans who eat dogs by reason that dogs are the most intimate animal to us. However, if dogs are killed unethically and people eat dogs in such an unethical way, they deserve to be criticized. This problem applies to all of animals. Animals raised for meat should also be killed in a humane way because it is the minimum manner for them.

I don’t agree with your idea. Of course i love dogs as well as animals. However, it is literally “Culture.” There are several socieies in the world. And also they have their own culture. In the dictionary, culture means that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. So we should understand other culture and their life-style as a member of society. If we accept and understand the culture of the world, we’ll be able to meet the peaceful world.

I think food is also one important part of country’s culture. Some country ragards monkey is a food ingredient. Other country think monkey is just an animal, not an ingredient. It’s relative. And environomental influences can’t be ignored. Because it determine people’s lifestyle and diet. Every culture use different ingredient is surely natural and it must not be judged.

I absolutely agree with you. People who eat other kinds of meat but claim that we should not eat dog meat are irony! I feel that dog meat can be a personal taste like pig, poultry, and cow. How can Korean be a barbarian for eating dog meat? It is a part of food cultures among many countries and it resulted from our own history. Also we can not also criticize other countries’ food culture. Even though we can not understand each other, we have to respect.

I agree entirely with your idea. Culture’s food literally means that the food of their own country. So It may well take different view from other country since they live another culture. It may look weird to eat dog meat in korea from view of other country however, in our view, it look more weird to eat mokey’s brain. Therefore I think no one has a right to criticize another culutre’s food.

I think it’s very controversial subject. I have 2 opinions about that. Though I think I have not been on any side about the subject, I think it’s very rude that someone in the other country criticize for food culture as it is. Since world has connected to each other, I think people need to accept ‘Cultral Relativism’. But I heard the distribution system of dog meat is really insanitary. Since it’s not related to Cultal Relativism and in the sight of hygiene, it’s needed that Korean goverment take care of its distribution system more strictly.

I don’t agree with you. people who think that eating dogs is like eating man regard dog as human’s friend. So they feel disgust at eating dogs, and it is spontaneous emotion. Nobody has a authority suppress their opinion. Nobody knows whether their thinking is absurd or advanced yet. This is same reason that we shouldn’t overlook a minority opinion. Since the minority opinion is may be right like human right of women. Therefore we shouldn’t prevent their voices.

I totally agree with the idea that it’s controversial that the people who ban eating dog meat eat other kinds of meat. I think they don’t have any qualification to blame others who eat dog meat. And in my opinion, it’s very important to respect other culture and thoughts because we should live this world. Without it, it’s impossible to maintain this symbiotic world.

    1. What is your favorite dish? Describe it. How do you feel afterwards?

Based on my privious experience during my life time, I have tried bundle of dishes throughout the world. However, ever since i had a ‘Shasimi’ some time called ‘hoe’ in korean, I have been crushed on it. you may see the picture of Shasimi above the link. Heo is thinly sliced raw fish or sea food. heo is usually dipped in a spicy sauce called ‘chojang’. Because it brings sweet and spicy flavor. Depends on one’s preference, you can wrapp heo in lettuce and Korean perilla leaves with couple of galic pieces. To be honest, that’s my favoite way to eat shasimi. Also after finish law fish, the other dish will be served which is ,Maeuntang, spicy fish stew made of fish bones. Stew is consist of vegetables and fish head and bones, and boiled few minutes. it has amazing flavors like spicy sweet. Every time I finish this fish dishes, i feel satisfied and have no emotion for few minutes because i feel very full. Otherwise, sometime the fish’s bones are irritating me due to bothering my gum. However, law fish is still my favorite food in the world.

However, I’m getting accustomed to the seafood. Especially, I found that the texture of sushi gives me refreshing taste.

    8. Is it wrong to criticize another culture’s food? (for example, eating dog meat)
Do we have a authority that criticizes another culture’s food indeed? This question is quite philosophical and complex unexpectedly. However, i’ m convinced that individuals have a right as a human to criticize other’s food cultures to a degree.
Everybody eat the food regardless of whether they are barbarian or vegetarians. So someone claims that there isn’t standard to criticize other food culture, because individuals need to eat food and their food cultures all have differences. But i think this argument has error. Point isn’t related in relativism. This is problem of the dignity of human. Others find standard to judge about food culture in emotions. For example, eating a dog is bad, since dogs are pitiful. Of course, this argument also has error. According to cultures, we can be friend with fishes, pigs too. If we shouldn’t to eat some food due to pity, we shouldn’t eat anything. I think, at first we need to know reason why we feel discomfort in eating some food. That reason is we think these acts damage dignity of human by instinct. We can understand this fact clearly by the example about cannibalism. In 2001, cannibalism happened in Germany. One man received proposal that other man can eat his body. He agreed this proposal, drinking a cup of coffee. After all, he who gives proposal cut other man’s body into pieces, and ate them with sweet oil. Then, can we admit these acts on the basis of relativism? Well, the answer is obviously no. It is because eating culture like that damages dignity of human. The most of people feel discomfort, if they see someone eat dog hungrily that was his old friend even until yesterday. Moreover, if he even bash and tenderize his friend’s meat, maybe we feel sick. Also, nobody understands whoever stimulates appetite looking image that someone eats creature with six legs.

As i mentioned, Reason is we feel such food culture damage dignity of man. They don’t despise other’s culture, but react to them naturally. Of course, If we all criticize each other’s food culture, inevitably conflicts are likely to happen. However we haven’t to overlook action like cannibalism. Therefore we should keep the right to criticize other food cultures, but this right need to certain limitation. Time goes by, excessive food culture will disappear and we will understand each other. That’s the share of the public. Until now, dignity of human is maintained like this way. So we should respect other’s spontaneous disgust.

    ( I linked article of cannibalism )

I agree. We should always keep the balance between universal morality and cultural relativism. Cannibalism is one thing that must be prohibited in any kinds of culture.

One of the my favorite foods is 떡순튀 which is combination of teokboki, sundae and fries. It is in the Korean snack bar and it is really famous especially to students. Because these three are about 10000won. This is really cheap price to have satiated meal with 3-4friends! Eating sundae and fries with teokboki sauce is perfect matching. And also you can add Kimbap if you want. Most of the mother’s home cooking let me comfortable, but one of my comfort foods is Kimchi fried rice. There was an memorable story that I regarded kimchi fried rice as a comfort food. Every winter, there has been a momentous event for high school students. It is the scholastic ability test! For the scholastic ability test day, one of important things we have to prepare is deciding what kind of food do we eat in a lunch time. On the day I looked forward to, I ate warm kimchi fried rice cooked by my mom in a thermal lunch box. Perhaps due to my mother’s nicely prepared meal, I did well on the test fortunately. At that time, since the scholastic ability test was the most crucial event throughout my life, I needed something which made me relaxed and my mother’s warm and tasty food played the relaxing role well. One of my favorite food is spagetti. Especailly Spagetti alla Carbonara. The reason why i love spagetti is because of “Memory.” Since i was elementary school student, my family and i have cooked it every weekend. However now i live in dormitory of our university, i can’t cook spagetti with my family. so when i eat spagetti outside, i am lost in old memories. And also when i traveled to Italy for 2month, i always ate it because my sister and i love it. For these reason, Spagetti is one of my favorite food. If i miss my family and want to feel our condition, i’ll go to eat spagetti. when cooking spagetti, it needs a lot of patience and time. Because we should repeat stirring to make sauce. So when i eat it, i can imagine a restaurant kitchen and feel grareful. I recommend when you eat spagetti in a restaurant, try to imagine a restuarant kitchen and their heart. For me, Sundaeguk, which is Korean blood sausage soup, is the most delicious food in the world. I had my first taste of Sundaeguk when I was 19. At that time, I was preparing for academic aptitude test and was really exhausted with all of my studies. So I eagerly needed a shot in the arm and finally, I found it. It was Sundaeguk. When I first tasted it, I was so fascinated that I ate it almost everyday since then. I don’t know the exact reason but I always felt some kind of comfort when I ate it, even if it doesn’t say even a word. Now that I have succeeded in entering university, I thank Sundaeguk for being my companion during tough times. Clearly, Sundaeguk is a food that I cannot live without!

    2. If you can cook, what is your favorite dish to prepare? Why?
My favorite food to cook is cookies! 🙂 I love baking or cooking food. However, the most easiest and happiest one for me is baking cookies. Baking cookies is kind of easy one to cook. First, you have to buy some ingredients for baking, such as powder for cookies, butter, egg, and sugar syrup. Next, you need to melt 70g of butter a bit and mix with egg and syrup. Third, u need to mix with all the powder (mix cookie powder) together. Fourth, you need to spread the dough in the tray and make the shape with cast. Lastly, put the tray in the oven which is prepared as 180 c’. This is pretty easy for man and woman both! 🙂 Help yourself everybody!

    3. Do you have a comfort food?
Sandwich has been the best delicious food since I was 8 years old. At that time, I didn’t have lunch and waited until the dinner which I could have with family. I had to eat my lunch at home because the school didn’t served any lunch for freshmen. However, when I came back home, there was nobody in my gloomy and dull house because my mother started working when I was 8. It was tough thing to prepare all of the meal and eat alone in the lonely house for young girl. I was common kid who missed mother’s care every moment and felt so lonely in silent house. I was too young to cope with the situation and hated to eat alone. These are the reasons why I didn’t have a lunch. So mother worried about me and decided to make special meal for me. After I go to school, she made various types of sandwiches like bacon, eggs, ham and so on and she went to work. So when I came back home, sandwiches on the table caught my eyes and I used to eat them well. My lunches were sandwiches almost every day since that moment, but I’d never been fed up with them because I could feel the sincere love of mother. Until now, when I miss mother or family during the life of dormitory, I love to enjoy sandwiches. My loneliness is fade away thanks to them. Sandwiches make me feel that I’m not alone and give me some energy.

    5. Does some food have too much salt, sugar, fat these days?

    http://blog.naver.com/ha_ov/220484942241
In this summer when I was in America with my friends, I found some characteristics about their foods. This was the first time that I visited USA but I felt so much cultural shock due to some foods. Without a doubt, America has lots of delicious food, and we can taste many kinds of excellent food that we never had it in Korea. However, those were so salty and so sweet on Korean’s taste.
When we finished to eat meal, always drank a bottle of water because of salty taste. Also, Most of friends put on weight because our menu was usually very salty or sweet, as a necessity it was high-calories food. Furthermore, there were lots of fast-food restaurant, we should eat fast-food once a day or every other day.
During a month that I stayed in USA, I took too much salt, sugar and fat. So it was too hard for me to readapt Korean food and tasty when I came back to Korea. The salt, sugar, and fat are very important to make taste of foods. But, using too much salty, sweet ingredients can raise many kinds of disease and trouble about our health such as obesity and diabetes. For this reason, we should try to reduce salty and sweet flavor of our foods.

I agree with your mention. I had same experience in this summer. When I was in USA, all foods are salty and sweet. I had defficulty with eating foods in USA because it was so cheesy that I could not eat everyday. Even I lost my weight in USA, whereas I had expected that I would gain weight in USA! Because USA has highest population of obesity all over the world, I think American should change their food habits to be more greener such as eating much vegetables.

When I was a kid, I thought my mom is a really competent cook. Interestingly, while I has been growing up, I can recognize she makes not that delicious foods as I have thought. Of course, everything she made for me is lovely and sincere, and she always uses very fresh and high-quality ingredients. However, she makes a terrible food frequently. One day, when I was a high school student, my mother made a curry and rice, and she put some ‘fish cake’ into them(Fish cake means eomuk). It was totally tasteless. I wonder how she could make that kind of food by mixing two delicious individual foods. I bet this is the most unusual food in the world, because nobody have ever seen this food except for my family.

    1. What is your favorite dish? Describe it. How do you feel afterwards?

I have found all kinds of delicious foods in the world because I really love tasting fresh and unusual flavor or something special. One of the my favorite foods is ‘Korean boiled chicken soup’ so called ‘닭곰탕’ Have you ever tried it? It is really nice. It is kinds of chicken soup, but it is a little different from boiling few hours with meat broth, garlic, ginger, and all sorts of medicinal herbs. It is a really Korean style food because it has a common features of Korean food such as boiled, many seasoning, and not only delicious but also good for health. Appearance of the ‘Korean boiled chicken soup’ is quite simple. Watery soup with pieces of boiled chicken, small pieces of spring onion, garlic, ginger, and all sorts of medicinal herbs. At first blush, it looks nicely presented and neat. Like the preceding, it tastes also clean, light and bland because it is not salty enough at first but you can season with salt as you want. Finally, it is also high protein food, so it gives you a strong and great day. I usually eat this food in the summer, but I also often eat this food in the other seasons because I really love this ‘Korean boiled chicken soup’. Afterwards, when I eat ‘Korean boiled chicken soup’ made by my grandmother (She’s specialty) as I mentioned before, I feel that as much as I am the superman. Like this, it gives me a super power to overcome all of the hardships and sufferings. After a long time, I really want to eat my grandmother’s ‘Korean boiled chicken soup’.

    7. How important is food culture in making or maintaining relationships in Korea?

Korea’s one of the most important thing in making a relationships is eating together. It is also called ‘sharing’ culture. Eating meal together is always easiest way to be friendly with other people from the past. They enjoy talking with variety topic during eating meal together. Moreover, many important information is shared during that time, too. By doing this (eating meal together), Koreans share same values and feel the sense of unity. Therefore, eating culture is quite necessary for making relationships. However, this culture can cause negative effect. Unfortunately, some people have fear in eating meal alone. Because they feel that they can’t belong with other people. Though negative effect is exist, sharing food and have meal together is surely beneficial to combine social community.

I learned that Western cultures have ‘independent’ characteristics, whereas Eastern cultures have ‘dependent’ characteristics. And this is reflected in food culture. Especially in Korea, there is ‘sharing’ culture, as you mentioned, in which one plate of food even is shared by several spoons. Someone hate this culture, because it is unsanitary. In other words, much saliva of many people is mixed in the plate of food. Having grown up, however, it doesn’t bother me. Rather, it has an advantage that if many people order respective food, we can taste various menus at the same time. 🙂

    9. Compare Korean food culture with the culture of another country.

Korean food and western food has difference in staple food. Korean staple food is rice, whereas western is wheat. The reason why they have different main crop is geolocial, climatic factors. Rice, firstly, needs environment which is humid and high temperature and it is similar with Korea’s one. Because rice is susceptible to environment such as ground, water, and pest, famers in Korea should give full attention while raising it. So, in the past, farmers in a village had to make community to help each other’s raising. On the other hand, western has more arid and berren areas than Korea. But wheat has strong ability of adaptation in these areas. So western’s main agriculture focus on wheat. Wheat is easier to cultivate than rice so westerners can do indivudually. In conclusion, difference of staple food between Korea and western results from environmental factors.

I didn’t know that to cultivate rice is more difficult than to cultivate wheat. It’s interesting. But, both rice and wheat are kinds of carbohydrates, right? All foods that mom cooks for me and my family are my comfort foods, but one of my favorite is 미역국. It is a kind of Korean soup which is cooked with seaweed and beef. I don’t know why, but I’ve liked that food so much since I was young. I have one story heard from my parent. When I was a child, I was a picky eater and took a long time to eat a meal. Usually my parent were troubled to feed me, and one day my mother cooked 미역국. She put rice into soup and gave it to me. Surprisingly, I ate it all myself even fastly! After that happened, my mother cooked 미역국 very often. Sometimes family members were tired of it but I was an exception. Topic: Is it wrong to criticize another culture’s food?

A standard of defining a ‘Food’ varies with cultures. People usually regard something as a food, according to their cultural context. Insects, for instance, are efficient supply source of nutrition in some cultures. However, for some people in different cultures, insects never can be a ‘food.’ Those are just living things or only nasty, harmful and even horrible things to them. Like this, criticizing another culture’s food has possibility to ignore the diversity of culture. Thus people should consider different cultural background before making a certain decision about another culture’s food.

Do you know subway sandwich? It is my best favorite foreign food. But I got to know recently, because I traveled to USA during last vacation. In USA, subway sandwich is very commonplace food. So I often ate this. Actually, I don’t like vegetables except some of them. The subway sandwich is included lettuce, tomato, olive which are my favorite. And I like this order steps. We can choose bread and kind of vegetables. If we don’t like vegetables, it is possible to exclude what we don’t want. Next, there are a lot of sauce, especially, I like sweet onion sauce and bbq sauce. My favorite menu of subway is Roast chicken. Chicken’s texture is very chewy and plain. And it harmonized all of vegetables. Oh, except jalapeno and cucumber. I hate them. So sometimes I used to eat lunch at submarine, which is similar subway. Sandwich is fresh and my best favorite foreign food which makes me happy.

I can cook many kinds of food regardless of genre, it can be Italian, Korean, or Japanese food. Among them, the food which I can make perfectly is ‘Kimchi bokembap’. It’s not difficult to make. It is the food that steamed rice and kimchi mixed together with other ingredients such as green onion or carrot and fried for some times in the pan. The normal kimchi bokembap looks very simple. However I usually decorate with fried egg and make it looks like a bear. If I have a girlfriend, I really want to make it for her, the food which I can prepare wonderfully!!

What is the most unusual food you have ever seen? Have you tried it? Would you try it?
I want to talk about the most unusual food I have ever eaten. It is snail dishes. Many people would have heard of it and may eat it already. Before that day, I didn’t expect that I would eat snail dishes in my life. When I was in middle school, I went to buffet with my family and just ate my own dishes. Suddenly, my father gave me something with cream sauce. It looked like usual whelk that I eat sometime. Without any doubt, I took it and ate it. The taste was not that bad because it has almost similar flavor and chewing texture with whelk. After eating it, my father told me that it was not a whelk.. it was snail with cream sauce.. I couldn’t believe that I ate a snail which was my old friend used to see in rainy day. Until now, when I see a snail, the flavor is reminded in my mouth and it feels very sorry for snails..

    1. What is your favorite dish? Describe it. How do you feel afterwards?

It is hard to me to choose my ‘favorite’ dish, because I like so many different types of food. So I want to talk about recently my favorite dish.(I mean when I have to choose something for my meal, I think this dish first all the time recently.) It is Donburi(돈부리). It’s a Japanese food that rice is below a pork cutlet(or deep-fried shrimps, chicken, salmon, ect. Any thing else can be.), onion, egg with sauce. My favorite is Ebidon(에비동 – rice with deep-fried shrimps) and Sakedon(사케동 – rice with salmon). It is easy to eat because there’re no need to any other side dishes. So it’s convenient when I have short time to eat my meal. And also it’s really delicious. I think that a collaboration of onion, egg, and sauce with shrimp or salmon cannot have no taste! I recommand you to go Hong-Dae Donburi and order Sakedon! It’s located not only Hong-Dae but many places(You can search it). I feel full of course.. and I didn’t think of my feelings.. but I’m always happy after eating delicious food, so I’m happy and enjoy my meals.

I went to Hong dae donburi a few times. This restaurant is very popular and makes delicious donburi. But I have not eaten Sakedon you recommend. The kinds of Donburi is very various. When I went to Enoshima in Japan, many restraunts in Enoshima sell Enoshimadon. Enoshmadon is rice with conch. If you have a chance, you try this food.

    1. What is your favorite dish? Describe it. How do you feel afterwards?

First of all, It was really hard to pick one food…there are so many delicious kinds of food!
But finally I choose one, it’s PIZZA.
When I was young, in fact, I don’t like pizza. Because I really hate vegetables. However when I was about 10 years old, I ate pizza for the first time and it was really delicious. Now I’m thinking why i didn’t eat that delicious pizza.
As you know Pizza was born in Naples,Italy. But I think Korean style pizza is the most delicious pizza. Of course, It’s my personal opinion.
Actually, the reason why I had this opinion is my two previous experience.
Quite a while ago, I have been to Italy and I eaten Pizza there. I was really looking forward to eat Italian pizza. But It’s not delicious than I had expected. (Perhaps, Because I’m Korean? Haha)
So I like Korean pizza. Because Korean pizza has so many different kinds to choose and DELICIOUS!

I also think pizza is delicious. But pizza is so greasy and oily. If you eat a lot of pizza, you are fatter. Be careful!

    2. If you can cook, what is your favorite dish to prepare? Why?

If I can cook, I would like to prepare a maeuntang(Korean spicy stew).
I want to put plenty of hospitality in maeuntang and serve it to the people whom I love.
I chose this dish because I want to hold a party where we can enjoy alcohol.
It seems to be a very adequate dish to eat with soju.
I also wish the fish, which is a main material of maeuntang, is to be fresh fish.
If there is a chance, I want to have a time to go to the sea or river and enjoy fishing directly.
Time spent with friends as with alcohol is more pleasant and happy.
I hope my sincerity is contained in maeuntang by putting various healthy ingredients.
I think it would be a valuable time to spend with people through this food.
Ultimately, I want to make maeuntang for my friends and family.

Each person including me avoids or feels scared about some foods. For example, many non-koreans hesitate about eating ‘Soon-dae’, organs of pig such as liver, lung, and ears of pig. And I had that hesitation over eating something as a foreigner. That was a heart of chicken.
I visited USA on my vacation, and went to a restaurant selling expensive and various kinds of meat or fish. There, one foreign friend asked me if I have ever eaten a heart of a chicken and asked me to try once. I was very afraid of eating because it made me think of the heart of human beings. But actually, it was different from my expectation. It was a size like my thumb-nail, and tasted like chickens’ large intestine. (It is more scary..)
Though I had no chance to eat chicken’s heart twice(because I’m the coward) but that was the food I want to introduce as my unusual dish and recommend you to try for special experience.

Mexican dishes are my favorite foreign dishes. I really love them and I have to go to eat them regularly 🙂 I especially like burritos, a kind of wrapped sandwich, which are made with guacamole, red beans, salsa sauce and various kinds of meats and vegetables.
I first ate them in Hongdae when I was a freshman. The taste was so stimulating and addictive. Guacamole, traditional Mexian dressing matched perfect with other ingredients.
I have totally fallen in love with Mexicans foods since then.

Unfortunately, there are not so many Mexican foods restaurants around University. (I know that the one near the front gate is serving burritos, but frankly speaking, it is not satisfying. 😦 )
Here are some Mexican foods franchises I recommend!
“Dos tacos” are well known for their burritos. Price is reasonable and suitable for launch or simple dinner. You can visit them in Gang-nam, Hongdae, Seoul city hall station.
“On the boarder” are franchises that serve nice fajita. I think they are little expensive for students,so I usually go there to have some special dinner. They are located in 여의도, Itaewon and Jamsil.
“Tomatillos” is the franchises I usually visit when I have something to do in 을지로. They offer varied set menus so it’s easy to choose the dishes.
I hope I can get chances to have nice Mexican meals with you 🙂

In western coutries, it called to bacon. 삼겹살 is a perfect dish. 삼겹살 is very delicious. It is very soft and juicy. Koreans roast pork belly over a hot grill and eat with vegetables. Also, 삼겹살 is more delicious when it is eaten with 신김치 and 소주. You know,They deserve one another 삼겹살 is to appetizing too many foreiners doesn’t like it.
