Kidults

October 5, 2015

I am posting this on behalf of Prof. Greg Sharer, who will take care of this week’s blogging exercise.

I recent read this article. The word “kidult” refers to a blend of “kid” and “adult”. A kidult is an adult who likes to collect traditional and new toys. According to the business press, it’s a rapidly growing market around the world. Kidults buy 15% of toys in the US and 20% of toys in Germany. Here in Korea, the market is booming. Consumers buy models of tanks and Ferraris, Lego and Star Wars toys. There are over 300 online communities for Korean kidults, with between 10,000 and 50,000 members, most of whom are between 20 and 40 years old.
So who are these kidults? Often they’re grown-ups who buy the toys they couldn’t afford to have when they were young. They want to remember what it’s like to be young – something they may have abandoned by trying to grow up as quickly as possible. Marketing experts call it “age compression”: both young and old want to capture a teen culture of ‘eternal youth.’ Beyond nostalgia, there’s another reason to be a kidult: we’re so stressed with school or work that we’ve forgotten how to play.
Personally, I have good memories of my childhood toys. Lego, board games, and even old computer games help me remember some fun times I had growing up. But although I’d like to be a kidult, I don’t think I have the time! Maybe I’m part of the audience that marketers need to target.

Students: Choose ONE to write about.
1. Are you a kidult? Would you like to be? If so, write why being a kidult appeals to you. If you like, post a picture of a toy you have purchased as an adult or would like to.
2. If being a kidult does not appeal to you, when did you stop playing with toys? Could you describe your favorite childhood toy. Why was it your favorite?
3. Describe a toy you wanted as a child but could not have. How did you feel at that time?
4. Kidults may be nostalgic for the toys of their youth or they may prefer the toys of today. How are the toys of today compared with the toys when you were young? For example: electronic versus real

I think buying and collecting toys are not starange hobby even after being adult. It’s just personal intersts. Many toys became fancier than the past so it can extremely attract to adult. I undestand whay adult collect toys. And I accept that, if they have enought capability to do that.

Barbie is still loved by adults all over the world. So, in this point, I think the taste like collecting plastic model of robot , and dolls is not something embarrassing anymore.

When I was about 8 years old, I wanted to get Barbie doll which has been a role-model for young girls. Barbie usually has blonde long hair, skinny body, and pretty face. And it usually wears fancy and trendy clothes that these strongly attracted me. At that time, I wanted to have it because I could do role-play with my friends which was very enjoyable. But, it was so expensive that my parents did not buy for me. So, I did play-role with other toys. I felt sadness and was envious about friends who had a Barbie.

Kids feel frustrated about parents for the first time when they find that their parents are not able to buy the toys they want. I think kids begin to grow up through this process.
By the way, some toys are too expensive. I think parents should notice that sometimes buying needlessly expensive toys to children can make them arrogant and boasting.

Yes..barbie doll was too expensive at that time. So my parents also tried to buy other toys, but I puerilely begged my mom to buy me a barbie doll. Anyway, although we have a similar experience, we showed different attitude about buying barbie doll. I was a little bit mean. 🙂

I was very proud of having many toys ,so I always wanted to have many of them. But, oneday I got to know that toys are expensive and I don’t need to have many toys since I play with only some toys. At that time, I learned I some kind of self-control.

I think that there are two ways in which toys captivate kidults. First, some of the kidults want to get some toys changing remarkably, which are more elaborate and detailed than before. While the toys in the 90’s were a little coarse or crude, like (1), the toys of today look like a real person and are very exquisite, like (2). When I was a child, I had a RoboCop figure, the arms of which only had the ability to move. Today’s figures, however, can fold even their fingers and pose variously and vividly due to their pliable joints. I think that the flexibility is not for play, but for display, and actually the kidults just display them, not play with them. Second, it is toys maintaining their features that others of the kidults want to collect. An example of these kinds of toys is Lego. Although there have been some different parts of Lego since I first played with it, it retains generally the same form and substance of past, like (3) and (4). I anticipate that the Lego of future also will not deviate from it’s features, because of the kidults who like the maintenance. In conclusion, there are two ways about changing toys, but anyways the kidults will continue to be enthusiastic about toys to suit individual tastes.

I have a same opinion with you. Today’s toys are more realistic than toys in the past. When I visited market, I saw a child carrying a baby. It looked like a real baby, but it was not! Besides the toys of human shape, other things like puppy dolls and cutlery-toys are getting realistic.

When I was kid, I really wanted to buy the Viking Lego. I was fascinated with lego at that time, and I always play with them. But the price was quite expensive, and I was hesitated to tell mom to buy those legos. Instead of buying them, I went to the lego store and watching the Viking model. I felt little sad but I played another robots and watching several animations instead of playing lego.

    2. If being a kidult does not appeal to you, when did you stop playing with toys? Could you describe your favorite childhood toy. Why was it your favorite?

I stopped playing with toys when I was 7 years old. At that time, I was not interested in having toys like lego. The only thing I wanted to have is barbie doll. (I was a typical little girl.) According to my dim memory, I had a variety of barbie doll. Because I have a sister who is just a year older than me, we needed to own a number of dolls not to fight each other. Among the dolls, one of my favorite dolls had blond hair, pink lips and wore a fancy dress, shiny shoes. The main reason I like it is that the doll was my idol. As I was an ordinary person, I could not dress as the doll in my daily life. Furthermore, I couldn’t find such a fancy dress. Another reason is that it provided me with an opportunity which maximize my fairy-tale imagination. By playing with my barbie doll, I could give full play to my imagination.

3.Describe a toy you wanted as a child but could not have. How did you feel at that time?

when i was little kid like 8 years old, i was dying to get lego and some toys named k-cops. it was really hit at that moment. beside, almost all of my friend possesed that sort of things. i was only one who didn’t have any of toys like lego and k-cops. Therefore, i had to go to my friends place to play with toys. i felt little bit shame when my friend didn’t like to touch his toys. i didn’t like everything around me like my mom, dad and friend playing with toys. However, after i became grown kid so called adult, i understand my familly’s financial situation at that moment because we, our family, were not able to afford everything i liked to have. Although i felt bad and somehow jealous of my friend and mom, it has been good foundation to be a not kidult.

    1. Describe a toy you wanted as a child but could not have. How did you feel at that time?

When I was a child, I was obsessed with toy BB guns. (Strictly speaking, there are no BB guns for children because the law prohibit) My father bought me a small pistol and I was very satisfied at first. However I soon realized that my tiny handgun is totally outgunned and out-ranged by large rifles carried by some older boys. Their long rifles were more accurate, had larger bullet capacity and decisively, were much more handsome. I nagged my father to buy me a more powerful gun but got rejected probably because he thought that the large BB guns are dangerous and expensive. I depressed and felt like being a primitive man opposing fully-armed soldiers with a stone axe.
Sometimes I can see the children playing a shooting battle in the play ground. It looks like technology have improved since I stopped playing as some kids are equipped with full-automatic toy gun. However other kids are still have manually reloading guns which look much disadvantageous. They might feel as same as me, or even more desperately because their gaps look bigger than I had before. Being feeble is perhaps the most sad thing that a little boy could feel. 😦

I also have experiences of playing with BB guns! When I was a child, I and my friends were divided into two teams, and we did the BB guns battle. If the battle got too excited, It sometimes became real fights. Also, if we ran out of the BB bullets, we vocalized the sound of gunshots, like ‘Tu, tu’.

I have loved many robot animation characters like Evangerion ,Gundam and Sunguard since I was a young boy. Though I have had good memories in my youth with those characters, I didn’t feel like to have a plastic model of them ,so I have thought I’m not an kidult. but after I watched Star Wars last Choo-Seok, I get to know I’m a kidult! There is an robot character called ‘R2-D2’ in Star Wars and I felt this character is so charming that it makes me want to have the real figure of it. From this experience, now I can understand people called kidult. I think they just keep their memories and some value in figures like plastic model. And, In this point, those things can be valuable personally. I’m not kidult now. However I understand charm of kidult and I want to be kidult someday, if I have a chance and spare time. I think kidult culture is so nature. Mary Roberts Rinehart said, “The man is always boy”. I agree with his opinion. Not only man, also woman is kid in part as ever. It’s not always so, but obviously we all have childlike side in common. Adults are compelled to behave like a grown-up person. The older people are, the more they suffer from this social pressure. It is because older people have more of responsibility, for example their family or job. For this reason, the adults have pretended that they are mature at all times and hide their tender, inner child. In contrast, when we take kidult goods, we can feel that we return to our childhood. The kidult goods console our tired every day in adult world. This is the reason why kidult appeals to us. Now, I want to introduce toys that I felt it is charming. “Kinder JOY” is that example. This is targeting for kidult. Kinder Joy stimulates our childlike mind. Like this way, we will keep depending on these things, and disclose our inner side by kidult. Therefore, I think kidult culture is needed to this world we live.

There is a reason why kidult does not appeal to me anymore. I had one favorite toy when I was about 6~7 years old. At that time, I eagerly wanted to have a sister after meeting my best friend’s adorable and sweet sister. So mom bought me a cute small baby doll to stop my grumble. I remember spending most of my free time with the doll as though that was my real sister. However, after watching the movie ‘Child’s Play(1988)’, which is about the horrible doll Chucky, I stopped loving the baby doll. Every time I watched the doll, it reminded me of Chucky’s cruel murders. Because of this, I still cannot look right at any kinds of dolls.

Yes, most of the people born in early 90’s saw the movie and some of them have a trauma toward weird-looking doll. Beside of the Chucky, some doll’s artificial eyes look very scary. Later I knew that this is due to the Uncanny valley effect. According to this theory, when a doll or artificial character looks too similar with human but not exactly same, the small visual gap gives us uncomfortable and scary feeling.

    1. Are you a kidult? Would you like to be? If so, write why being a kidult appeals to you

When I was a child and went to kindergarten, I wanted to become an adult. As my past wish, I am now an adult. However opposed to my wish, I want to reverse my adult and childhood time.
At the time before I became an adult, older people around me tended to say that I have to have both independence and responsibility after becoming an adult. Through life in university, I tried to be independent and responsible. Eventually, I felt I need someone to rely on. But those advices made me not to lean on somebody. So I started to find something I could talk to without burden.
Second cause I prefer kidults is that I don’t want to lose the purity mind of children. I consider one advantage of being a children is to challenge something without any worries and hesitation. Differ from them, I think adults have less chances of having process of failing something and overcoming it.
For those above reasons, I want to stay at the state of children as a kidult until now.

  14. October 9, 2015 12:23 pm

According to the Wikipedia, ‘kidult’ refer to adult with interests traditionally seen as suitable for children. In other words, the range of kidult is not limited to only toy. In my case, I am a kidult loving cartoons and animations. When I was child, according to my mother, I almost didn’t play with animations and usually played with dolls, books and animals. However, by the time I was about 7 year old, the time to entrance elementary school, I started watching animations and so far I have loved watching animation and cartoons. Especially when I was high school student, I started watching webtoon(webcomics) such as ‘The Sound of your Heart’, ‘Penguin loves Mev’, ‘School-Holic’ and ‘Crazy Coffee Cat’ etc and it has become my important hobby -I am watching about 20 webtoons now and it is decreased number. I believe the main reason I obsess animation and cartoon is that it can get rid of stress quickly. Now days, it is difficult for many people to spend lot’s time to releas stress everyday. Thus many people prefer certain activity to give enormous satisfaction in short time. And I think webtoon and animation are best tools to achieve this aim. As a result, I love them in other to release my stress and I will be watching animations for long time as long as I am a member of society.

When I was young, I watched so many comic books and webtoons. Nowadays, I didn’t have a time to enjoy comic book. However I still have fun watching webtoon. It is because, the webtoon don’t require a lot of time, and it is convenient to see webtoon by mobile phone.

I love webtoons too! I have read Noblesse, Tower of God, and About Death. Despite its format, it still give even adults many things. So I think the standard of kidult is very ambiguous

About Death is awesome webtoon I think. It was really great.

    1. Are you a kidult? Would you like to be? If so, write why being a kidult appeals to you

I think i have some kidult tendencies. Of course i’m not kidult now however, i love ‘Teddy Bear’. When i was nine years old, my grandfather bought it from Jeju and gave it to me. My mother and father are always busy so i had a lot of tume with grandfather, grandmother and teddy bear. This being so, i have friendly relations with Teddy Bear until now. I have a elder sister who is 26. For this reason, i can become mature early more than my peers so i have no innocense of childhood. However, when i saw or stay with teddy bear, i can feel some of childlike. During these courses, i can throw my stress about school, study or society. I think we should be a kidult or try to be a kidult sometimes. Because, we need to throw our stress about our work and need to motivate us by returning to the innocence of childhood. For these reasons, i want to be more kidults like child amd stay at this state. 😦

I feel that I have lost the purity. Although I don’ have the Peter Pan syndrome, I want to keep my naiveness. The older I get, the calculating and callous I become.

In my childhood, I was really into Rego. I always begged my parents when the new series launched. Someday, the batman series released and I hopefully wanted to get it. However, parents didn’t buy it even if I cried out loud in the department store. I think they worried about getting bad habit that having mind of parents should buy everything. I was disappointed at that time, but I can understand them.

So now, are you eager to buy that legoes or not? In my case, my parent didn’t buy me everything I wanted, but now a days I’m not interested about it anymore. I bought some legoes recently, but it is not a reason that my parent didn’t buy for me in my chindhood(I’m not interested in lego when I was young).

    3. Describe a toy you wanted as a child but could not have. How did you feel at that time?
When I was 12 years old, the game console ‘NINTENDO DS’ was very popular among my friends. The NINTENDO DS can play a variety of games by different game card. It can also connect each game console by using its special system. So when I met my friends, they always talked about the new game card. Or just played game. My parents thought spending money on game is silly and they didn’t buy me NINTENDO DS. At that time I was really disappointed that everyone got NINTENDO DS but me. I feel like all of my friends have that game console except for me. But now, I think my parents’ decision was right thing to me. If my parents buy that game console for me, probably I played the game all the time. The fact that I don’t’ have game console made me be interested in reading books. I keenly appreciate my parents’ decision. 

    2. If being a kidult does not appeal to you, when did you stop playing with toys? Could you describe your favorite childhood toy. Why was it your favorite?

My favorite toy was a fire truck. Because I have a brother who is two years younger than me, I always fought with him to play with the fire truck. I think we liked the truck more than any other toys. But, the day before my brother’s 6th birthday, I did hide the truck somewhere my brother couldn’t find it. The next day, his birthday, when my brother blow out candles of cake, I gave him the truck as a birthday present. I have not played with a toy since than. I don’t like toys nowadays, but I sometimes buy a thing that can remind me of my childhood.

If “kidult ” meaning includes playing with dolls, I can say I”m a kidult. Because I really love to have dolls such as rag dolls of typical characters, teddy bears and something look cute. Someone can think me as a child like my mom does, whatever they say, dolls are my favorits. Until now, I buy some dolls. A few days ago, I bought a rag doll,Moomn which is a character of japanese animation. When I stay at home, I used to hug it or sometimes I talk with it. It makes me feel comfortable that I’m going back to my childhood.
Since I was young, I really like to play with dolls so that I had a lot of dolls. However, when I became a middle school student, I threw away all of them because I thout I’m not a child anymore. However, these days I gather dolls again since they make me recall my childhood and the feeling of pleasure. Also, as playing with them, I can forget some sense of responsibility that adults should have and behavior that adults should do. For these reasons, I think I became a kidult.

My favorite toy was Winnie-the-Pooh doll which was as big as me, a 5 years old girl. Although there had been various kinds of toys like lego and barbie dool, My best friend was the Pooh. I used to be left home alone after kindergarten because my parents worked outside since when I was a baby. It was too difficult to being home alone until late at night. I felt so lonely that cried almost every day. So I could spend the miserable time only with the doll. It was my mother, father and friend. I talked to it and watch TV next to it. I need it even when I had to go to bed. My loneliness and fear were definitely disappeared when I hug it tightly. However, I couldn’t be with it anymore because I got lost when our family moved to another house. I was 10 at that time. I have missed the doll and it is still placed deep inside of my heart.

ulike other girls, my favorite playing is ‘building block’ since i 7years old . of course i was playing with pretty doll but not often. i enjoyed establishing buliding more with younger brother. when the one block piles up to make a specilal kingdum, slowly, consistly and finally i complete the shape i wanted! i ‘m so happy and proud of me. it’s like a “No cross, No crown” to young girl. the playing is continued until i was 12years. by the time my graduation of elementary shcool, i focused on study more and forgot my hobby, and l intereted in listening the music. and my brother also grown up and my mom threw away all of them.
sometimes when i visited my youner cousin. and play with his block. it isn’t fun than the past.
i thought i grew up a lot. and have another hobby watching movie and listening music.

Building something with blocks, we feel that we make a city, or a kingdom. I also used to enjoy playing with blocks. Even, I and my friend built our hideout with real blocks in a vacant lot! We stored our building tools, toys, and magazines. However, the workers nearby deprived us of our hideout, saying it was dangerous to us. 😦

    1. Are you a kidult? Would you like to be? If so, write why being a kidult appeals to you. If you like, post a picture of a toy you have purchased as an adult or would like to.

I think I’m not fully a kidult, but partly, yes. In recent days, I bought two nano legoes, and I would like to buy more. Making nano legoes is fun for me, and during the time I made it I thought only about legoes and ignored anything else. I think many people like to be a kidult because of that reason. They can concentrate not heavy and funny things that they love in the past. But acually the reason I bought legoes is different. I have no memory that I couldn’t buy or play with legoes that I was eager to. So I’m confused with the exact meaning of kidult. Recent days, I play with legoes, and from the past to now I have read the comics called web-toon, and I’m the one who is just 20 years old in this year! So am I the one who can be called a kidult..?
Kidult appeals to me in some way. I think kidult lives life more joy than other people. They have what they like and they can use their free time more well. I like something, not legoes or toyes. And I think I live my life more meaningful than other. Some people said that I just waste away my time but I think differently. Loving this, I feel various enjoyable feelings, and it makes me happy. I think that’s enough. So someday, maybe I can be a kidult.

    3. Describe a toy you wanted as a child but could not have. How did you feel at that time?

When I was a child, I really want to buy nintendo player and play station 2 (In fact, it is not a Toy but a video game machine). At that time, all of the Korean children want to get them, because those kinds of machines were the latest fashion for young children. Also, there were not many computer games in those days, so especially we (include me) really want to play video games with our friends. It also caused a sensation or a syndrome of video games. However, it was very expensive game console to buy; therefore there were a few people who have those kinds of video game set. One of my friends had a play station 2; I went to his house every day to play games because it was really interesting, exciting and amusing. It gave me a fantasy and made me if I am a protagonist of the famous book. For those reasons, it made me to really want them and to pester my parents to buy them. But, before I mentioned that it was more expensive than the other toys, my parents gave a flat denial on buying those kinds of game consoles. So, I teased for them again and again, but my parents were so stern that they said “No” firmly and directly. Consequently, it was too calm judgment and decision that I was so depressed and painful so I did not say anything with my parents for a week. After a week, finally I made up with my family but the memories of my childhood have sometimes given me a pain until today.

When I was a child, I played the Playstation 1 at my cousin’s house. It’s a new world for me. While other game machines are used by game pack, the Playstation1 is used by game CD. It was very amazing and It has a good quailty. After I bought the Playstaition2 when I was a highscool student. I enjoyed it.

When I was young, I bought so many Legos. Including HarryPotter theme lego, I bought about 10 legos. As a child, I played with lego almost all day long. After I bought lego, at first I made lego following the instruction. And after than I made something with lego in my own way. Now as an adult I didn’t pay my money for lego anymore. But now I paying my money for character dolls. So I think I’m also a kidult. The cute character dolls always catch my eyes. I don’t always buy them. But at least whenever I go to trip, I usually buy a doll.
Some people buy toys excessively. That can be a problem. But within the limits I think kidult is fun and good!!

Actually, I’m not interested in toys. Even when I was a kid, I didn’t have a strong desire to it. My parents said once that I’ve never cried or whined to get toys. I think I liked them as a child, but didn’t really care about them. To my recollection, I stopped playing with toys after I entered the elementary school. Although I’m not quite fascinated to toys, I used to play with a small doll with a small toy house that is similar with suitcase. It was my favorite toy, because I could carry it anywhere. I put my doll into the tiny suitcase-house filled with various doll clothes and shoes. Usually I played with my sister putting clothes on dolls and having roll-play. Sometimes, I want to find that toy again and keep it in my room forever.

When I was a young boy, I really exuberated in Japanese robot animation and Ultraman, which is very famous tv series in Japan. For these reason, I really like robot toy and Ultraman toy in these animation. They were my everything in my life. The toys seemed to occupy most of my room. My father and mother often took me into the department store. When we passed by toy coner, I pestered my parents to buy new robot toy. If they refused my request, I lay on the middle of the floor and bawled. Despite this action, when I could not have toys, I felt like losing everything in my life. I was so sad and disappointed.

In my perspective, kidult does not appeal to me. It seems that kidult is one of maladjusted symptoms for me . I stopped playing with toys when I was 8 ior 9 . When I was a kid, I used to play with dolls or lego. As you can imagine, I am a girl and I played with them pretty a lot. Barbie was my favorite and assigned roles to each barbie, such as mother, farther and babies. Barbie is a doll modeled with the real human. So it may be easier to play with. Also, Barbie is pretty and fancy to play with . haha For these reasons I played with Barbie a lot when I was a kid.

If my parents’ bought me that game console, certainly I played the game all day long. But they didn’t do that so I became interested in reading books. Surely reading books is more helpful hobby to me. Therefore I don’t care of that time’s sadness.

Actually, I don’t want to be a kidult. Rather, I want to be a more mentally mature,,, adult. I stopped playing with toys when I was very young. Maybe before I enter middle school. Although I’m a girl, I didn’t like dolls. My favorite childhood toy was a lego. Especially a castle, like…Hogwarts which appears in Harry Potter. When I was eight years old, my parents gave me the lego Hogwarts as a christmas present. I was very very devoted to assembling it for few days. I was interested in assembling and the process of completing something. Fun event, the next day I finished it, my younger sister crushed it. She was about..five years old. After school, I found my crushed castle..But I was not angry and tried again.

If being a kidult does not appeal to you, when did you stop playing with toys? Could you describe your favorite childhood toy. Why was it your favorite?

Firstly, I think kidult is not a bad word, When I was young, I liked playing with different kinds of fake pistols, and enjoyed it until 12 years old. my favourite childhood toy is one of my pistols, I bought it with two weeks of pin money, it was a simulation pistol according to Desert Eagle, with golden appearance. As we know, all simulation pistol are just can shot a plastic bullet just for meters, and ballistics always deviate. But that golden Desert Eagle wasn’t. it can shot to nearly 30meters long and hardly deviate. It let me very exciting, because often have a pistol competition with the kids who also have pistols and I value my marksmanship, that was the highest of highest glory in my childhood. With that golden Desert Eagle, I won other kids easily and won fame among kids. They are all willing to play with me and thought me as a hero, I also remmbered there were several kids willing to hold a stick of incense in hand to let me shot at it because they knew Im the best shoter never made no mistakes and believe in me, I just shot incense and never hurt their hand. I can shot very tiny things accurately like a match, thin strings and even a flying fly with my golden Desert Eagle!!! It gave me a happy and powerful childhood, because many little boys were my man since my excellent marksmanship, Thanks to my golden Desert Eagle, hah~

This picture is what I wanted to get as a child. I used to play house with my freinds when I was young. So, I need some toy for playing house. There are many kinds of toys that children can do role playing such as playing doctor, playing cook, and even playing singer.
However, my parents said that It was too expensive to buy for me. So I can’t get it and felt big disappointment. Then, I remembered it was christmas eve when I was 6 years old. When I woke up in the morning, there was big presents beside my bed. My parents bought for me this toy and two books. They taught me that reading a book first, and playing with toy last. I absolutely promised with them. This is the one of the best memorable toy in my life.
