CRW 1 Introduced Animal Species

March 10, 2016

The homework from today (Thursday, Mar. 10) to be done by Tuesday is as follows:

Are introduced animal species a problem in your country?

Example:

Introduced animal species can be a problem in Canada. With many non-native species, there are sometimes little or no natural predators, so these unwelcomed visitors can multiply rapidly and disrupt local ecosystems. One example is the Zebra muscle, which is native to the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. Zebra muscles multiple faster than local muscles, so they can outcompete the native species. Zebra muscles can damage the environment, economy, and human health by reducing food for surrounding fish, clogging pipes, and cutting people’s feet and hands. Thus, government action is need to prevent invasive species from entering Canada and manage those that are already in the country, like Zebra muscles.

I’m gonna talk about bullfrogs in Korea. Bullfrogs lived in partial area of North America. The reason why they live in Korea now is some Korean people imported them to eat, but they discharged them carelessly by mistake. Their habitat is wetland and water like greenfrogs. And they are prolific. Even bullfrogs have big huge body compared with normal frogs. They eat even snake, fros, fish, crawfish, mouse and same kind. These features of bullfrogs have made Korean ecosystem higgledy-piggledy.

I think Nutria is the best example of this subject. Nutria is native to the southern part of South America originally. In Korea, it had been imported from the 1980s to the 90s. It inhabits Busan and GyeongNam regions equally nowadays. It was fed for its fur or meat on farms. However, Nutria was not attracted great popularity, and eventually farmers threw it outside. After all, Nutria has been introduced to our ecosystems and its population grower and grower. It is not only devouring crops and fruits indiscriminately but also destroying dams by digging burrows which make ground erode. Finally, Korea government specified the nutria to ecosystem disturbance species in 2009. As a result, 7869 Nutrias were killed in 2015.
In my opinion, I agree with Nutria is one of the most dangerous animal to our ecosystem but it occurred by human’s irresponsibility. We should be responsible for this problem and refrain from making blind criticisms about the Nutria. It is just weak victims. Also we have to find ways to coexist between people and Nutria as possible.

i would like to talk about Vulpes ruepellii .
Vulpes ruepelli are widespread. They are found in desert regions of North Africa and the Arabian peninsula and other warm country . Rueppell’s foxes are highly adapted to their desert habitats . they use to live in dried and sandy stony areas but they have some problemns due to competition with red foxes, Rueppell’s foxes have been pushed to more extreme habitats that red foxes do not dominate. also Rueppell’s foxes have a lifespan in captivity of approximately 6.5 years to 12 years. Their lifespan in the wild is unknown, but is probably greatly shorter due to pressures such as predation and competition with red foxes.
Rueppell’s foxes are small foxes with a predominately sandy-colored coat . they have large, broad ears, and feet with furred pads that protect them from the heated sand. they achieve a body length of 40 to 52 cm with a tail length of 25 to 39 cm. At the shoulder, they reach 30 cm and they weight around 1.2 to 3.6 kg. Males tend to be slightly larger than females.
Rueppell’s foxes will eat almost anything that crosses their path. They are omnivores, partaking in anything from insects, eggs and small mammals to roots. they serve as a population control for both rodents and insects. These pests can be very detrimental to humans considering both are important disease vectors as well as crop destroyers. These foxes also do kill many pest species that cause millions of dollars in damage to crops.Rueppell’s foxes are considered pests because they are thought to eat poultry and other domesticated animals. They are also known vectors for the rabies virus. The actual population size of this fox is unknown. The main threats to it are habitat destruction and indiscriminate poisoning. Also competition with red foxes is making Rueppell’s foxes compete for resources. so for this reasons in my country they considered that the rueppell fox is an endangered animal.

There are some problems about introduced animal species.
Red-eared slider is one of them. They were imported as a edible and pet.
But they began to cause some problems. They eat off our native underwater creatures such as terrapins and freshwater tortoises. This eventually leads to disturbances in ecosystem.
We are strongly committed to resolve this problem. First, We encourage red-eared slider holders not to release their pets. It is not legal problems, it is conscientious problems.
Second, we captured them artificially. For example, regular citizens cast a net at a waterway in person. But it is not enough. It is hard to resolve by just personal efforts.
It needs goverment supports. Government have to expand budget or use existing budget efficiently. If that happens, this problem will be resolved quickly.

South Korea surffer from a lot of non-native animals and plants.
I would like to talk about Red-eared turtles that make a problem in my country.
Red-eared turtles live in U.S.A Indiana to Texas orignally. My country imported them for pets.
It was really good trying. They are really cute and look after easily.
However we have a problem that kinds of people release them in the river or lake. When I was young, I released my pet Red-eared turtle too. I regret for these thing. By the way, there are good habitats for them so they can reproduce what they want. More important thing is they can damage the environment, eco-system. They eat anything which is traditional species in the river or lake. But they don’t have natural enemy.
Thus, to solve a problem, It needs to goverment supports that they have to prevent importing Red-eared turtles and people who raise them have to be interested this problem.

I’m sure that people in Korea should pay attention to the issue of introduced animal species. In the past, people imported various introduced animal species for several reasons, especially for food. However, they didn’t notice how much non-native species negatively affect Korean ecosystems. Moreover, since people were careless about the results introduced animal species cause, they were easily brought into local ecosystems. To make matters worse, non-native species tend to reproduce rapidly. Therefore, these days, many species including Bass, Nutria, Blue gill and Red-eared slider have destroyed the balance of local ecosystems by shrinking the population of native species. For instance, according to an article, a fisherman can catch 200 kilograms of Bass and Blue gill per day in Soyang River Dam. Through this example, we can infer that imported animal species will have an effect on our lives severely. Consequently, I think that government should try to resolve this problem by taking advantage of natural enemy of exotics species like the relationship between bullfrog and toad.

Since other students got most of introduced animal’s name, I was searching in the internet and found something interesting. According to Ministry of Environment of South Korea, they announced 24 species that will cause a big problem in Korea’s ecosystem in 2013. One of the name was outstanding. In english, it was anoplolepis gracilipes but in Korean it was crazy yellow ants. Crazy yellow ants is so called because its body is slightly yellow, and it won’t move around like other ants do, such as following one’s tail in a row. But it suddenly changes its direction like zig zag. This species is native in Africa, Japan, North America and Southeast Asia. It vomits acid to other animal which makes them go blind and starve to death. This ants eat anything one can get one´s hands on, including an arthropods, reptiles, birds, mammals etc. Anoplolepis gracilipes is notorious of ruining ecosystem. Because of their bad skills in ruining the ecosystem, it was designated of ‘Earth 100 malicious ‘Invasive species to the ecosystem’ by IUCN(International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources). We should make the security harder and make people report spontaneously. The country should examine closely before introducing in our land.

In Korea, there are some animals such as nutria, bullfrog, red-eared slider and, large mouth bass, which disturb the ecosystem. Among these animals, I’m going to talk about large mouth basses. Large mouth basses were introduced from America. They prey on Korean native fish and have no natural enemy. Even they have a great ability of environmental adaptation so, they cannot die easily. For these reasons, they were designated as species of disturbing ecosystem. Therefore, government should prevent them from entering Korea and capture them, And there is also what we can do to solve this problem. We need to eat them a lot.

I introduce ‘a bluegill’ among many exotic species that cause ecological disturbances in Korea. Bluegill is originally eastern Canada, the eastern United States, North Eastern Province, including exotic species is native to northeastern Mexico. But the influx of domestic bluegill randomly exterminate species like a freshwater shrimp, small fish. As a result, the bluegill has become the main cause breaking down and sharply reducing the ecological balance of native fish. they live in ponds, lakes, rivers, and elsewhere without the fast current. Also, they have long breeding season and excellent fertile. therefore, in the absence of natural predators, they eat the other species and multiply rapidly. these non-native species that threaten reservoirs and rivers is to be resolved when government and NGO should concern about the problem. And furthermore, when each of us concern about ecosystem, the ecosystem should be preserved.

I have no idea about what species are introduced from other countries to Korea and what are the problems. So i did a little reasearch on the internet. I found report which shows introduced animals and how they effect on ecosystem where they are non-native. Almost all effect was negative. According to this, there are about 36 kinds of main introduced species which cause damage in korea’s ecosystem. It’s all different how they work negatively in nature, but they have something in common to. That is firstly, they kill a lot of insects and plants that need for circulation by eating all of them. Secondly, they got much more reproductive rate than other native animals. So above all, it seems they cause a huge damage on native ecosystem and yes they are propblem in my country.

Not all species, but some species make problem in our country.
One of them is Nutria. Nutria is a kind of mouse that came from South America.
At first, Nutrias were found near by Nakdong River. But now, it is found many of rivers even though Nutria can be found in Jeju island. Nutria is a mouse, but it grows as 1m and its weight is about 10kg. Nutria can eat 1.5kg of indigenous crops in a day, and it also damages the crops. Also, Nutria’s nature is vicious, so it can attack people. Its teeth are sharp and big. It can cut people’s fingers.
So, Nutrias destroy our country’s ecosystem.

Nowadays, harms that introduced animal species do have been serious problem both for human and its local ecosystem. There are actually quite many uninvited animal species in Korea but the main species on the headline is Chinese cicada.
Chinese cicada is originated from china, vietnam, japan and india and takes away Korea native cicadas’ habitat by its rapidly increasing population. It is now hard to see Korea native cicadas in summer because of chinese cicadas. More than its’ destruction to local ecosystem, it also damages crops by secretion. Its’ large amount of secretion degrades the quality of crops and lay eggs inside of fruits and make it hard to reap.
In addition to chinese cicada, there are bass, bullfrogs. There were originally brought into korea for its’ own purpose but not to peoples’ expection, they are becoming a disturbance to its’ local ecosystem. There should be a resolution to this unexpected problem and native animals species should be protected.

I have been reasherchig on introduced animal species which are a problem in Korea on the internet. During the reasherch I found a bird from Canada, common name is Canada goose in Enghlish. The name of ‘Canada goose’ has been famous for fashion brand that has been well knowned for thier qualified paddings. That is the reason why this migratory bird took my attention. Branta canadensis, texonomic name of Canada goose, is kind of wild goose as you can see in their academic name. They were originated from north America and now spreaded widely because of good habitual adaptabilities.
Actually the problem has been related with this abilities that they could live in city with people and could be not only migratory but also resident in particular areas which appropriate to live in for four seasons long. Branta canadensis’s extraordinaly competences have been troubled in many aspects like environment, aesthetics, and human health. In fact population explosion of the species because they don’t have powerful predactors also has been affected native lacations.
I think the goverment should resist the increasing population of canada goose. And also the fashion brand ‘canada goose’ had better to find a way coexistance human and this species than it could give greeting emages customers.

Introduced animals are serious problem in Korea too. There is a specific law that handles with introduced species, and more than 18 species are specified as disturbed ones to Korean eco system. Not only animals such as mammals, reptiles, insects, there are plant species that also cause problem.
When I was taught in highschool, the representative introduced animals were bull frog and bass. However, as time goes by, more foreign species enter Korean land and affects the entire ecosystem. If there is no further effort for regulating these introduces species, they will wipe away the natural species, and destroy the ecosystem. Korean government is trying hard not to bring out that cause, and many movements are held to protect the environment.

There are many introduced species in Korea and sometimes they are threatening to not only local ecosystems but also human health and economy. One example is a Vespa velutina, kind of bee, and it comes to Busan first via Shanghai in 2003. Vespa velutina is a subtropical wasp which like warm place, so it appears to cities due to urban heat island effect and it can adapt cities well. It has more fatal poison than native species which can kill people. Because Vespa velutina has hooked sting, it can shoot continuously, not dying. Also it can damage the economy by eating the honey bees which is main feed to Vespa velutina and It affect beekeeper’s income. The Government designate the Vespa velutina level one hazard species with bullfrog and bass.

When I was child,I often came along with my dad to fish. Whenever we went fishing, my dad told me amusing stories and whispered me “It is just between you and me”. I really liked fishing with him not because of interest in fish but time we spent together. One day, he started explain species of fish which we got. And He taught me there were so many ‘bass’ in Korea and actually it was from North America. Bass is so aggressive that it prey anything move especially native fishes. It threaten the biodiversity. From know on, I regard the situation as serious. We all have to perceive harm of injudicious invasive species’s introdcution

Types of exotic animals and plants introduced in Korea are very much. Largemouth bass, Bull frog, Red ear turtles are typical examples. The main reason why they are the problem is ecosystem degradation. Native animals are losing their homes to live because of exotic(introduced) animals. Even regardless of species, native animals are also eaten for exotic animals. Many introduced animals destroy ecoregions and also inflict damage to crops. The obvious countermeasure is needed for these problems. Introduced animals that make troubles or breed quickly should be expelled. It is also important not to take the exotic flora and fauna into our country.

Nowaday the newly introduced species destroy the ecosystem
There are many introduced species in korea such as nutria, bass, red-eared slider
These exotic species threaten the survival of native animals
Because introduced spcies have a strong adaptability and also incapacitate the existing system of the food chain
To address these problems, the government executes various protective policy
for example exotic species hunt support programs and exotic species habitat research…
I think the indiscriminate introduction of exotic species should prevent and
Research on individual number change of introduced spicies is also needed

Nowadays , there are many speicies that harms the ecosystem
Among those species, i would like to talk about red-eared-slider turtle.
Red eared turtles has their origin in north america and they’re imported to korea for pet.
But people start to release them to a lake and now they’re the one of the most notorious ecosystem destroyers who eat literally everything if it’s possible. Since it has no natural enemy in korea, it’s entity has been increasing enormously.
To prevent their increasing, we need to stop releasing them to a lake and keep attention to our local ecosystem.

Introduced species are regarded as a ‘problem’ in Korea. I would like to talk about that species that raise some problem to the native species, especially ‘The bullfrog’. They are much bigger and much stronger than the korean native frog. Sometimes the bullfrog not only eat our native frog but also eat the native snake, which is natural enemy of the native frog. Because of their enormous eating habit, ecosystem of korea was fallen into the ‘chaos’ at the past. Now, the condition of the natives’s habitat have been better than the past, because of the people’s effort to protect the natives. Many korean who wants to protect their own ecosystem really did a lot of action like a nationwide campaign of killing ‘Bullfrog’, sprinkling the drug fatal to the ‘Bullfrog’ and so on. A lot of problem caused by introduced species are still regarded as a ” tough problem”, but I believe that we can also overcome that problem thoroughly again.

Introduced animal species can be a problem in Korea. Problems occur when they disrupt native ecosystem and reproduce so fast that their number gets bigger than native one. Ameican bull frog specie has caused both of problems and it is getting serious matter in Korea ecosystem. American bull frongs are from North America. Korea first brought America bull frog to eat. However they are designated as a wild disruption animal now.
First reason why they are designated as a wild disruption specie is their reproduction power. Bull frogs lay from six thousands up to 4 million eggs a time. Their amazing reproduction power is keep increasing the population of America bull frog so that it is way over Korea native frog population.
Second reason is Ameican bull frong’s size. They are about 20 centimeter average so they are more likely to survive in any condition. In addition, they live mostly in the water but when weather gets humid, their sphere for activity gets larger. Therefore there are no limit that they can not go.
The most interesting characteristic of American bull frogs and the most affective influence to ecosystem is they don’t have predator. They only have preys to hunt. Therefore they eat up most of ecosystem. For example, Korea frog, snail, insects, and even snake are their favorite menus.
Korea brought them to eat but it is not preferable to us. So American bull frog’s number are getting bigger and bigger. It is hard to control.

The rat specie called Nutria is being issued because of it’s negative effects. They are eating every crops on a farm and even attacking other animals. It is a huge damage to farmers. Unfortunately, Nutria is not the only one. There are more introduced animal species like bullfrog, bass, red-eared turtle, which are ruining our ecosystem. So, yes. Introduced animal species can be a problem in Korea.
However this doesn’t mean that they are harmful animal species. It’s just that they are not fit in here. Then what we have to focus on is that ‘How can they be able to come to Korea?’. It’s because of human. At first, human tried to import introduced animal species for their own good. For example, Nutria and bullfrog were treated as imported food. However it didn’t turn out in a way they planned.
Introduced species are destroying the ecosystem to survive in their way. They don’t even know what they are doing is destroying the environment. So we,human have to be responsible of it. We should protect native species from introduced one by making the shelter only for them under our control. Moreover government have to be strict about importing other species.

In korea, blue gills and large mouth bass’ are problems. they are imported to increase the number of fishes, but they’re decreaing the number of fishes. because they are more bigger and stronger than native fishes, native fishes lose competition and decrease in numbers. according to study, 77% of the fishes in ponds are blue gills and large mouth bass and only 23% are native species. also, blue gill and large mouth bass are meat diet fishes and they eat more valuable fishes than they are. so they are very serious problem for the people who live catching fishes. I think government can reduce the number of harmful introduced animals by promoting them and commercializing them.
