CRW2 Air Pollution

April 28, 2016

Air pollution is a serious issue. Thick layers of dust carrying heavy metals such as lead and arsenic from Chinese and Korean coal-fired power plants pose harmful effects to health, especially to vulnerable citizens such as children, the elderly, and people with health problems like asthma. Each year, citizens complain, the government reacts, but little seems to be done to improve the situation, unfortunately.

Students: Choose one question to write a response.

  1. What are the causes of air pollution? (or choose one cause and write about it)
  2. What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)
  3. What measures can individuals, government, and/or corporations take to reduce/minimize the negative effects of air pollution?
  4. Your idea.

These days, seeing the gray skies filled with air pollution, I am reminded of a scene from the movie Interstellar(2014) directed by Christopher Nolan. In this movie, humans are faced with the future where sand and dust destroys our lives by threatening our health, causing illness, and damaging crops. It is just similar to the phenomenon that is happening nowadays. I think the disaster depicted in the movie may really come true in the distant future. By the way, the causes of air pollution vary. According to KBS News, more than forty percent of the fine dust which comprises a big part of the air pollution recently comes from the exhaust fumes of diesel cars. Yellow dust blown from china is another one of the causes of air pollution

The effects of air pollution can be divided generally into two parts, the effects to human health and to the environment. Firstly, related with human health, air pollution is a big threat physically and psychologically. Humans cannot live without breathing air. Because of that, air quality is important to human health and dirty air is a big threaten to us. Breathing mostly relies on the lungs and respiratory system but it is also happened in all our body. So air pollution makes illness of in our respiratory, eyes, and skin. It is worse for the weak people such as children, the elderly, and Patients with respiratory disease. Also air pollution can make psychological problem of human. Samsung Seoul Hospital found that when fine dust and air pollution are serious, degree of the depression and the rates of suicide were ten percent higher than the day were not.

Air pollution causes bad effect environmentally also. As ‘A basic study of heavy metal content analysis in the crops farmed from city’, heavy metals such as Al and Fe were found in the surfaces of crops and ground. It is effects of air pollution, the contents in the air accrued in the surfaces of crops and ground. It destroys the environment and after all, causes bad effects to the human.

In conclusion, air pollution makes bad effects to the human and to the environment surrounding human. In the movie Interstellar, the sand storm destroy the earth and eventually human depart to the another planet from the collapsed earth. It can be our real future. Although it’s not happened while we live in the earth, our descendant can be faced such the end. We must have a long-term caution to this phenomenon and seek the solution actively.

These days, air pollution is getting more and more serious. Almost every day I check the concentration of fine dust. Because of the air pollution, a lot of people have difficulties in breathing. The main difficulty which air pollution causes is damaging effects on health. Fine dusts cause bronchitis. People are coughing, sneezing and spiting phlegm. WHO classified fine dust as class one carcinogen. Air pollution also causes asthma, lung cancer, stroke, cardiac disorder, eye inflammation, and skin complaint. Moreover, the air pollution can bring mental illness. People can be easily depressed. It is also fatal for people who are suffering from dementia, because the air pollution can aggravate it. Like this, the air pollution had a bad influence on health. Therefore, people and nations should do their best to remove the air pollution.

    2) What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

Air pollution makes all the creatures on Earth get sick. In February 1987, birds were decimated by air pollution in Mexico City. The reason for this is that the dead birds investigated and turned out to be poisoned with heavy metal like lead, cadmium and mercury. If not only man but also all the creatures on Earth live a health life, they should breathe in some fresh air. However, we can’t pick to drink the air, unlike food and water. So, polluted air has seriously affected all the creatures. If fine dust of air pollutants is inside the human body substantially, it is unfiltered in the trachea and is entered the lungs. If the fine dust blows into the lungs, people can get bronchitis or pneumonia that have a pain in chest and have a cough and a fever. Especially, sulphur dioxide (SO2) that is a major contributor to air pollution destroys the respiratory cells or weakens the body’s immune resistance. If people, of course, animals breathe the polluted air, they are troubled with a respiratory disease. Also, plants, flowers and leaves wilted and it can wither in the worst case. There is no border in the air. The polluted air floats in the world. Although some people make the air clean, it isn’t what solves the air pollution. The whole world should also try not to pollute the air anymore.

2)What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)
For a recent month, there are just two days without fine dust. It is a real shocking news to all of people who live in Korea. Nowadays this is the biggest cause of air pollution definitely. Fine dust is one of the important world problems. According to World Health Organization(WHO), about 7 million people have died early due to this. It can be also transformed into ultra-fine particles in the air. When these particles come in human body through the respiratory organs, They result in various diseases such as hair loss, allergic coryza and conjunctivitis, dermatitis and otitis media. Especially, It is fatal to elderly or pregnant woman. Ultrafine particles promote Alzheimer’s disease. They penetrate brain’s barrier which filters out toxic substances and damage a nerve cell. It leads to decline of recognition function. Besides, these particles hamper delivery of nutrients from mother to fetus. Despite such a serious problems, some people still overlook and ignore fine and ultrafine dust. In this situation, Only methods of keeping ourselves from these are firstly realizing magnitude, checking daily concentration and wearing a mask. A tiny little habit makes our life healthy and clean.

    2) What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

Recently,Koreans suffer most from air pollution. To be specific, from microdust that is mostly contributed by Korea and China. Literally, microdust is extremely small dust that is even smaller than our hair’s diameter, virtually making it impossible to be detected or filtered by human’s body. Also, it contains harmful things like heavy metals. These two features make human get various diseases. Microdust make people’s blood vessels narrower, eyes sicker, and nerve systems duller, not to mention respiratory illnesses. Elders and young people are more vulnerable to microdust, and it makes them lack of outdoor activities which enhances health. It can be somewhat filtered by wearing masks, but carrying and wearing them is quite bothering thing to do. Also, wearing masks can’t prevent microdust’s invasion of ears and eyes, and some microdust can even go through masks. Clearly, microdust threatens Koreans’ health. Individuals can’t get rid of microdust, so Korea and China government must make strict laws to restrict, watch and punish things that spoil air.

    1) What causes air pollution?

As you know, smog occurs frequently in our country even, several days ago, Korean National Weather Service warn people about an excessive amount of fine dust in the air. Contamination of air has been increasing every year and one of the most significant causes of the air pollution is Yellow dust. Intense dust occurred in northern deserts of China merges into clouds and travels toward Korea especially during the spring season. These types of dust usually contain sulfur, ash and other toxic pollutant which are harmful for our respiratory organ. Many children suffer from related diseases such as pneumonia and asthma each year. Industrial gases emitted by manufacturing factories also contribute to the air pollution in Korea. It contains lead, mercury and cadmium which we called heavy metal. It can lead to acid rain when they are mixed with rain. Especially, pollutants released from burning fossil fuels have harmful effects on atmosphere and environment. As people use more and more electricity in our daily lives, these kinds of air pollutant has become increasing which means that it is hard for us to inhale clean air.

    2) What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

One of the serious effects from air pollution is that it causes respiratory disease such as rhinitis, asthma, pneumonia and so on. Korea is now suffering from microdust blowing from China. The most significant reason why the microdust is fatal is its size. Microdust contains various kinds of carcinogen, also known as cancer-causing agent, and its size is one seventh of hair. Therefore, it can be accumulated in one’s body from throat to an alveolus in lung. According to a research from National Institute of Environmental Research, an adult man doing outdoor activities for an hour inhales 58㎍ of microdust and the 58㎍ of microdust is the same as inhaling cigarette smoke for 86 minutes. It is truly harmful not only to adults, but especially, also to young children, pregnant women and the elderly who are very vulnerable to diseases caused by air pollution. Since their immunity is lowered, they should pay particular attention to their health when the concentration of microdust is high.

It is impressive that you suggested specific figures in your essay, so I could recognize how serious air pollution is in these days.

    2) what are effects

These days, you can see people wearing a mask everywhere in Korea because of air pollution. In addition, on the mass media it continuously warns how the effects of these days’ air pollution are fatal to people. On the other hand, some people still overlook the influence of dust in the air and think nothing of it. This kind of thought is very dangerous because they don’t know how the air pollution badly affects not only health but also Economy and ecosystem. Let’s see what effects there are.
Firstly, effects on health. The dust has heavy metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium, and it is so tiny that the heavy metals in the dust easily come to our blood vessel and spread to every organ. This causes many diseases like lung cancer, skin cancer, heart attack, and stroke. According to the research from one renowned Science institution, every 10micro gram of the concentration of dust increases 1% mortalities. This is why it is called a silent murder.
Secondly, effects on Economy. Due to the air pollution, people become inactive and workers are not recommended to work outside. It means that productivity of labor will be lower than before. Also, the dust makes machines in a factory broke down very well and the factory cannot produce their product like before. These facts become a drag on the economy.
Lastly, effects on the ecosystem. The air pollution is also fatal to animals and plants as well as human being. Harmful substances in the air penetrate into soil through the rain and plants cannot intake helpful nutrient from the soil. Then this causes animals’ malnutrition and finally all of these problems affect human being in bad ways. Thus, because of the air pollution the whole ecosystem gradually gets paralyzed.
Sometimes we underestimate the seriousness of air pollution because the dust in the air is invisible. However, it is no doubt that the effects of air pollution are very harmful to not only creatures on the Earth, but also this society. Therefore we should always recognize how harmful the dust is and keep our body and society safe from the silent murder.

2)Some Negative Effects Caused by Air Pollution

How does thick layers of dust affect you? For me, it’s very serious problem. I am a person who has weaker lungs than others. Even though, this has an bad influence on all the people, there are certain persons who are suffered from air pollution caused by yellow dust and fine dust, like me. Especially, today’s serious air pollution is influencing on the kind of people such as people having weak respiratory organs, dermatitis or street vendors still more negatively.
To begin with, air polluting substances such as fine dust would weaken the immune system and cause trouble in respiratory system. As these systems are weakened, the cold which is not a serious problem might transform to the serious illness including bronchial pneumonia, especially, this symptoms show easily from the person who has weaker respiration. For example, I am one of them and I have problems with frequent coughing and nasal stuffiness because of the yellow dust from china in these days. When I stroll through the street, I give a cough continually and have a thirst intensely.
Moreover, air pollution causes skin problems such as skin irritation. Nowadays, fine dust is a serious issue and many products related to it, are getting popular more and more. It would proves air pollution have an bad effect on one’s skin. Fine dust is hard to clean, it attaches on skin and then aggravate acne and atopy. In short, these people may feel itchy and sore extremely because of air pollution.
Lastly, air pollution could give street vendors a hard time economically. In bad air condition, people would do not want to eat food sold on the stall because of serious dust. However, the street vendors are the people earn their living from day to day, selling their product or food on the street. They have no choice but to stand and sell the same food, even though people are reluctant to eat that food in bad air condition. I mean, street vendors could suffer from the air pollution.
In conclusion, there are a lot of bad effects and many people suffering from air pollution, as I mentioned above. Although, air pollution are getting worse and worse, there are not many people who practice something for protecting air pollution. People have to keep in mind, the existence who should live in the earth, is not other things, but themselves.

What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

Air pollution is a serious problem in many cities. It has many negative effects. First, it is dangerous to health. Many people are trouble with respiratory diseases, including bronchitis and lung cancer Because of air pollution. An estimated 27 people die a day from air pollution-related diseases. Second, due to the air pollution, It causes disintegration of the earth’s atmosphere. acid rain and global warming are increasing, Also Acid rain can harm both the land and the water. Third, air pollution damages cultural assets. we no longer see the many cultural asserts. to summary, air pollution has many effect: health, environment, cultural. so we should prevent air pollution. we can solve this problem. for instance, Bicycling reduces air pollution , so it is an environmentally friendly form of transportation as well. and we should promote the car-free day.

The air pollution such as ‘yellow dust’ and ‘fine dust’ is not individual problem anymore. There are lots of people who are suffering from the asthma or allergy and so on. However, there is no solution from the government at all because the government can’t stop yellow dust coming from China. Even though the government can not prevent dust from coming to Korea, I insist that the government should try to improve Korean people’s lives.
Due to the dust, many people are having diseases not only about bronchus diseases. Therefore there are lots of people using functional masks at outside, even inside. However, the special and delicate masks are used to prevent the fine dust, but people should buy those masks by themselves. Some pharmacy and store start to increase the price of those masks. I guess those materials such as mask or equipment should be offered by the government for free. If the government couldn’t prevent the dust from China before, the government should focus on minimizing the negative effects.

I found some interesting facts about the air pollution. I have always thought that the pollution is something that is created by humans. However when I was researching about this topic, I found out that there are some types of ‘natural’ air pollution. It means that some types of air pollution are produced naturally. Volcanoes, gases from radioactive decay of rocks and forest fires are the perfect examples for this. Forest fires, which start naturally, produce huge smoke that can cover cities or countries or even continents. Eruptions of volcanoes also create massive dusts covering all over the sky. It sometimes blocks the sunlight and cool down the earth. Lastly, radioactive rocks emit poisonous gases that can be harmful people’s health. These are interesting examples of air pollution caused by nature. It is something that humans cannot stop completely. However, we should always keep in mind that the unnatural types of pollution, which are made by humans, are the problems that we can try to reduce and solve.

    2) What are the effects?

There are lots of serious effects caused by air pollution such as a difficulty in breathing and an irregular pulse. However, I think it is also serious effect for women that air pollution causes skin problems. In the polluted air, plenty of ultra-fine particles which are smaller than 1/ 30th the thickness of a human hair exist. For this reason, if people are exposed to these particles, it is hard to wash them clearly and then particles block the skin’s pores. Finally people get terrible pimples just because of small particles. To prevent these problems, there is a solution “never get out the outside”. However, it is not practical solution because ordinary people have their own job like student and office worker which need outdoor activities necessarily. In my opinion, there are three steps to prevent it. Firstly, wear a mask when you have to go outside. Next, wash one’s face with deep cleansing foam as people arrive at the home and lastly, avoid outdoor activities as best as you can.

I agree with your opinion. Actually I got some troubles on my skin in this spring because of the bad air condition. I don’t want to go out for my skin but it’s impossible as a student. So I think it is important to make efforts as you mentioned.

I want to discuss the cause of fine dust and the solution to prevent fine dust which is one of the most severe air pollution. It is well known that fine dust is very harmful. Recently it is getting severe because of a wind from China. Then what should People do to prevent the negative effects from fine dust? The Meteorological Administration of Korea is blamed for not coping with this problem because of its uncertain forecast. It does not open fine dust measurement standard to the public, which leads uncertain forecast. For instance, recently Seoul had a gray sky because of the fine dust which filled the sky life fog, when the Meteorological Administration announced it is ‘safe’. Also, Koran only has 140 monitoring station of ultra-fine dust which is a carcinogen, so it is hard to get accuracy of its outcome. Furthermore, the standard level of Korea is even higher than other countries. For example, in Korea, it is seldom to classify the ultra-fine dust as ‘bad’ level. For this reason, people cannot realize the seriousness of fine dust. Therefore, Korea government must install more monitoring stations and let people know accurate level of fine dust by few hours. It also should make people do not go out when the air pollution is severe.

What are the causes of air pollution?

Apparently, it seems that most of people are recognizing the causes of air pollution. However, there are one more main cause of air pollution which people may not notice very well: the Freon Gas. As a matter of fact, Freon Gas is another name of CFCs(chlorofluorocarbons), because Freon is a registered trademark of The Chemours Company, which it uses for a number of halo-carbon products. This Freon Gas is mainly used for a refrigerator, or air-conditioner. And once it is exposed to the air, it starts destroy the ozone area. It means that, if you open the door of refrigerator and holding it so long, or if you turn on the air conditioner for so long time, you can be a air-pollutioner. But some scientists say that it is more harmful for the environment to turn on those machines frequently.
In conclusion, if you want to be a true savior of earth, you should realize those dead zones and follow the rules.

1.What are the causes of air pollution?

Recently, there are some serious news about “fine dust”. The air was covered with the dust so that many people cannot go outside. These phenomenon is a matter of frequent these days. futhermore, we can easily see the news reporting about the yellow dust that comes from China. These facts are all the serious air pollution that affects our health. Then why does air pollution such as these two examples that I mentioned happen? There are a main cause for the air pollution.

There are artificial reasons and natural reasons that make air pollution. Burning of fuel, occurrence of nuclear energy by using atomic power, chemical reactions and emission by the car, airplanes are all the artificial causes of the air pollution. Natural causes are eruption of the volcano and the forest fires. However, the main reason is by the polluted material that is made by burning of fuel. And it is connected with the emission by cars and airplanes. The number of the cars and airplanes are rising so that there are many possibilities to face with the air pollution.

Therefore, there are many suggestions to use public transportation for control the emissions by cars and air planes. Many countries already agreed on these serious facts and are searching for the method to make the fresh air. Nowadays, since many of people are suffering from the air pollution, we need to pay attention to the causes of air pollution and continuously find the way we can be free from the fine dust or yellow dust.

Have you experienced foggy atmosphere? That is a whole of fine dust and yellow dust. Air pollution is getting worse globally. We have to care about air pollution to reducing the negative effects of air pollution, especially by leading of a government.
First, government must demand solution plan to China. Presentation of a problem to major cause is very important. It can be a way of prevention of a perennial problem. It will help reducing the air pollution and help the global future definitely.
Then, government should give accurate notice beforehand about pollution forecast. Absolutely this notice should be announced without any adjustment because this is a real way of take care people. Then, government let them prepare mask and protect themselves.
Demanding solution plan, giving right announce will help the reducing the negative effects of air pollution. To solve a problem of air pollution, the role of government is really important. It only works with the accurate action and notice of government.

Pollution is that harming our environment .The environment is very important in people’s lives, because the environment influences people’s lives. But some people pollutes the environment, so recently environmental pollution is very serious. We live in a polluted environment, so we would fall ill easily. But we have the tendency to forget the importance of the environment. If the environmental pollution continues, all creatures that live on the earth may disappear. These days air pollution in Korea is serious.
Then how to get solution of air pollution, it has lot of way to clean the air. I think planted trees are very good way to clean the air. Trees are providing cleaning the air and fresh air.
and also we need to protect the trees. Another way to clean the air is use the bus. The car fumes are destroying the ozone layer then all the ice barge will melt. If ice barge melt, the earth will flood. Also not good for health too. Air pollution is not the someone’s problem anymore. It is our problem. I thinkthat we have to effort together for protecting our air and natural. If we don’t, air pollution will getting a very big issue the air pollution problem in the world.

Nowadays, streets are crowded with masked men. It is not easy to see sunny skies with no clouds. Nature itself shows that air pollution got more serious than ever. There are complex reasons for this serious pollution. However, humans cause all this. What they did on air can be classified into three aspects.
First of all, humans are destroying the nature by deforestation and manipulation of eco-system. They are cutting off trees to extend their land to build something. Trees are crucial element of nature because they absorb carbon dioxide and release fresh air for whole creatures throughout the globe. However, as humans keep deforesting the nature, trees cannot serve their roles so that air is deprived of its purifiers. Moreover, conglomerates such as Mcdonalds are breeding excessive amount of cows for their profit. They are breaking eco-system since if there are so many cows, they release huge amount of harmful gas that pollutes the air.
Second, civilization promotes industrialization with enormous plants releasing polluted gas to air which all creatures on earth breathe in to live. Humans are endlessly building factories for development. Although it enables convenient lives, paradoxically, it harms not only the nature but also humans’ lives with polluted air.
Finally, air pollution is steadily getting worse due to lack of humans’ action. Although almost all people who were under public education are aware that they have to realize the small rules for saving environment, there are few people who actually act on them. They take it for granted that small changes in their attitude can save air from pollution little by little. They tend to think that what they do is so small that it can nearly change the world. For instance, they just use their cars instead of walking or taking transportations and waste pieces of paper since everyone else is doing the same. However one’s action certainly moves people around oneself. Most people do not recognize it, which continues air pollution.
In conclusion, humans are the main causes of air pollution. Humans are deforesting, manipulating the nature, constructing factories, and not acting to save air from pollution. These caused air pollution and paradoxically, humans are now facing with serious problems due to air pollution. Reap as one has sown.

2.What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

As you know, it is spring time now, however, we haven’t been able to enjoy this spring properly because of an air pollution. About 3 weeks ago, I wanted to see cherry blossom so went to Seoul Amusement park. I had expected beautiful flowers with sunny weather but the sky was too hazy to have fun with spring. And I regretted not wearing mask to avoid breathing bad air. After spending a lot of time being outside with dust, I was shocked at the fact that staying in a smoking room for 1 hour and 40 minutes is equal to staying outside with fine dust at a high level. This bad air pollution can demage people’s lung easily especially children’s and the elderly people’s. In addition, it lead to serious lung diseases like black lung disease, silicosis, and asbestosis. Doctors say that it is best to prevent exposure to harmful dust. Because these diseases worsen very quickly, by the time you have signs all you can do is keep the disease from getting worse. However, most of us have to go outside almost every day so it is impossible to avoid dust in the air. Thus what we can do is just to wear mask, drink water a lot and wash hands frequently.

What are the effects? (or choose one effect and write about it)

I want to focus on the effects of air pollution because I’ve suffered from it a month ago. I’m a person whose vulnerable with a slight change of the weather or the condition of air. For example, I get fever when the change of weather comes and have sore throat, constantly sneezing. Fine dust was serious last month so I had the same symptoms. However, the problem was that last month was the month of mid-term! To make matters worse, I had two TOEIC exams but I couldn’t fully concentrate on study because of fine dusts. Of course people who study hard regardless of their health condition will be hard to understand me but I’m not that persistent person. Therefore, I can say that the effects of the air pollution is the decrease of my will to study making me ill!!!!!

What does air mean? meaning of air defined by a encyclopedia says “Air is the mixture of gases which forms the earth’s atmosphere and which we breathe” . In short, it makes all creatures which need air to breathe maintain their life. Imagine that every creature lives without it, and you can easily find it much faster that its lifetime becomes so short. In a case of human beings, they cannot endure breathing inside water even for a minute. The importance of air does not need an explanation anymore. However, this kind of precious thing is getting polluted as time goes on. The previous blue sky is being changed as buff sky, and the sales of mask people need to buy to breath and block the dust caused by yellow dust has been increasing. Then, what is the causes of air pollution? I think the most big reason is industrialization. The whole world has been experiencing in scientific development, which brought people surprised changes, such as excessive productions, convenient movement, and powerful weapons. These kind of things are what we cannot deny. On the other word, modern people exchanged nature for scientific creatures. Human’s greed lead natural destruction. Air pollution is the most serious victim of it. Many factories, companies and apartments built for human beings has emitted numerous pollutants that became the cause of yellow dust especially in China. That is, as china has gotten industrialized, it becomes the most polluted country in the world.
In conclusion, Air pollution will be not stopped until people give up on their greed. The people who are living in modern period should consider where to invest their life between the end of industrialization and the world of nature because it is impossible to maximize both them at the same time. The ideal decision is to balance between the development of science and the importance of clean environment.
