Is it possible to live life without risk?

I think living without risk is impossible. Of course in these days, high-tech societies, human beings have no more need to go hunting for their daily lives. Compared with ancient times, it seems that modern societies’ well equipped systems can reduce the risk of life. It is true that high technology helps people to feel more comfortable and safe. However, it also makes different types of risk. For example, the recent issue of Samsung’s exploding smartphone shows how dangerous and risky the modern devices are. Besides exploding mobile phone, we can easily witness other risky circumstances like car accidents, sinkholes in television news. Above things considered, it is hard for people to live life without risk.

“Of course in these days, high-tech societies, …”

Revised: “Of course in modern high-tech societies,…”

“It is true that high technology helps people to feel more comfortable and safe. However, it also makes different types of risk.”

Revised: While it is true that advanced technology provides comfort and safety, it also produces new types of risk.

    1. Do you think our lives are too safe these days?
A danger is anywhere. There are possibilities of car accidents and hate crimes. Therefore our lives are not too safe. When we commute to school or company, we are always in danger of an accident. Many cars are on the road so the danger of accident is rising. Thousands of people are dead because of a car accident every year. Recently, there was bus accident in highway and ten people died. No one knows the accident would happen. Also, there are hate crimes. In modern society, many people are suffering from mental illness. They choose victims randomly and attack or kill them. Just walking street could be dangerous activity due to these crimes. Therefore I think we cannot speak conclusively that we are safe.

I agree that Korea can still be risky to pedestrians, drivers, and passengers. However, it is far safer than when I first arrived in 1996. According to a 2015 World Bank report entitled “How South Korea has dramatically reduced road deaths,” the author claims “In 1992, 1,566 kids (14 years old and under) were killed in road crashes in South Korea. By 2014, children deaths dramatically decreased to only 53, the equivalent of an almost 97 percent reduction over that period of time. No other country that we know of has experienced such a remarkable reduction in only 22 years.” It seems as if the government is doing some things well to minimize the risk of accidents.

I think people could avoid risk to some extent by efforts but could not totally be free from it.
No matter how they try to make contingency plan, there is not s a flawless method to protect themselves from risk. Because they couldn’t predict how future goes on. For example, natural disaster is typical example of unpredictable accident. In Korea, citizens were surprised that a 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the country. Anyone couldn’t expect it. Except for natural phenomenon, there are also social risks all over the society. For instance, people always are at risk that drunken driver could hit them anywhere, anytime. Therefore, it is impossible to live without any risk.

“No matter how they try to make contingency plan, there is not s a flawless method to protect themselves from risk. Because they couldn’t predict how future goes on.”

Revision 1: No matter how well people try to prepare a contingency plan, there is not a flawless method to prevent harm, injury or even death because the future cannot be predicted.

Revision 2: No matter how well-prepared a contingency plan might be, risk can never be fully eliminated because of the unpredictability of life.

Revision 3: Even the most well-prepared contingency plans cannot fully eliminate risk because of life’s unpredictability.

    2. Is it possible to live life without risk?
I think it is not possible to live life without risk. Our lifes are surrounded by many kinds of danger. For example, car accidents, kidnapping, and even natural disasters don’t have confidence that they will never happen. For a few months ago, the subway stopped suddenly during rush hour. And, there were the explosions of up-to-date smartphones. Therefore, it is impossible to live without risk. Any risky thing can happen in any time.

I agree: life has risk. But most risk to individuals can be minimized so as to not be much of a worry. Science tells us that people often misidentify risk; that there is a disjunction between scientific evidence and people’s perceptions. One example I remember clearly was the dangers of Mad Cow disease many years ago. I remember the violent street demonstrations as people worried about developing debilitating brain problems – virtually (none?) occurred.

Is it possible to live life without risk?

Before we find the answer, we should define ‘risk’.
‘Risk’ is a possibility of arousing a loss or an uncertain thing that arousing the loss.
So, what is the loss? The loss is thing that occurred absolutely when we have to do something.
When we strive to gain something, the loss should appear, and we often say it “risk”.
In other words, everything has some risks.
For example, one day we prepare to have a dinner so we cook some foods.
In cooking, we may have some injuries like burn injuries, cutting our fingers.
Additionally, the ingredients that we bought to cook are also ‘risk’ due to we pay some money and labors.
After having a dinner, we could have a food poisoning. It’s also risk.
Although we look into having a meal that is very simple, many of risks is in existence.
Why the word ‘safety’ is exist if the risks is nonexistent?
It isn’t possible to live life without risk forever.

I like that you wanted to define the word ‘risk.’ But it would be better to use a reputable source as such: According to, the definition of risk is “the possibility that something bad or unpleasant (such as an injury or a loss) will happen”

Living is being together with a possibility of risk. Even health-conscious people can’t avoid the risk of disease. Even though they do not smoke to avoid lung cancer, second-hand smoking and air pollution threaten them. Exemplary citizen also may be in danger regardless of their effort by lawbreakers such as a person who doesn’t obey the traffic regulations, robber and murderer. We can stay home all day to avert risk, but natural disaster can destroy the house. Natural disaster is hard to evade through the effort of individuals, because it is unpredictable and enormous. However it doesn’t mean effort for avoiding risk is meaningless. It can’t remove the risk but can reduce it. For example, effort for natural disaster like a breakwater or seismic design can’t prevent the coming of natural disaster but can minimize losses. In conclusion it is impossible to live life without risk, and we can only expect possibilities for avoiding risk and restoring damage.

    2. Is it possible to live life without risk?

It is impossible to live without risks because every moment of our lives is about taking risks, literally. Even a seemingly trivial (or safe) thing such as doing laundries contains a little bit of risks because there is a chance of getting your hand stuck inside a washer. Worse, you may forget the important thing on your to-do-list while doing your laundries, and it can produce a disasterous result that might change your whole life! Even when you are talkin to somebody, you are taking risk of miscommunication. These possibilities or possible risks are infinite. From doing chores, studying, talking, and eating out to cave diving, bulls fighting, and riding motorcycles, the risks are everywhere! While we can minimize the possible risks, there is no chance that we can completely eradicate those risks.

    2. Is it possible to live life without risk?

I want to talke about task 2. At frist, I feel that this sentence is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard. In other words, risk is everywhere in the world, even at this very moment. For example, a week ago, a powerful earthquake happend in Gyungsang province unexpectedly. And a few people are reported killed and injured in that earthquake. In this way, we should always double check to look after our safety because we might be faced with unexpected danger.
In anddition, I believe that risk is one of the driving force which make people strong. People can be developed by expericing danger. For instance, if one person has a experience of car accident, this person will be more cafeful about his driving. Just imagine that how our lives would be without danger. Our humanity could be died out hundreds of years ago.
On balance, I think risk is a essential factor, and it is impossible to live life without risk.

“At frist, I feel that this sentence is the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard.”

Actually, it is not that preposterous. Risk depends on perception; different people perceive activities on a sliding scale of risk – low, medium, and high. While you might say it is impossible to live life completely without risk, people could choose a lifestyle that is very low risk in their perception. Moreover, some people might even consider an activity to have no risk, even though an objective evaluation might consider it to have some risk. There is often a disjunction between perception and scientific evidence.

Is it possible to live life without risk?

I think there is no possibility to live without risks because there are a lot of risks that we face every day.
First, there are some physical risks that include natural disasters such as earthquake and physically injuries by traffic accident. We live in fiercely competitive and busy society so we are inclined to do in a hurry. For example, when I go to school, I should experience traffic jam and feel confused about it every day. People run ahead of others and cut in to cars or buses without rules.
Second, mental risks also appear in these modern society. As technology is developed, there are many online crimes that violate our rights. According to Chosun-Ilbo, 75% of adults experienced online crimes and worried about one’s privacy be exposed to others. In addition, they felt it was more risky and they had mental illnesses and stress because of it.
Therefore, I insist that peopel cannot help facing a lot of risks in modern society.

I don’t think our lives are too safe these days. Even though the society is developed more and more, there are still a lot of risks around us. In some aspects, modern worlds are more dangerous than the past. While science and technology make human comfortable through various parts of advance, they also give us other hazards that we could not imagine in the past, for instance, traffic accidents, and nuclear accidents. In addition, as communities are getting heartless, the frequency of violent crimes like robbery, murder and kidnapping has increased. Moreover, it is almost impossible for people to predict and prepare nature disaster. Recently we also experience massive earthquakes in Korea which had been considered the safe area from earthquakes. Thus, people should recognize many kinds of risks around the world and make abilities to overcome them.

I don’t think it is possible for people to live without any risk. Because there is no safe place and danger is everywhere, people cannot be safe totally. Even though people prepare everything to keep them safe even in advance, it is hard to avoid every accident or disasters. For example, a few weeks ago, the southern area of Korea was harmed by a typhoon, which is called “Chaba”. People already knew that the typhoon was coming. Nevertheless, people who live in that area were damaged by a heavy rain and rain storm. Therefore, I am sure that people live their lives with danger all the time.

    2. Is it possible to live life without risk?
As far as I am concerned, I think human cannot live life without risk. Historically, human strived to avoid risk. They made weapons and built safety refuges to survive in the nature. Development of civilization enables people to avoid some predictable risks. However, human cannot predict all their future even they prepare well for upcoming things. Natural disaster is one example of risk that we cannot prevent. Few days ago, there was an earthquake in GyeongJu. The earthquake was so serious that inside of many buildings were broken and even Seoul people felt it. The government didn`t predicted it and the action was useless. Likewise, even the technology developed, human did not find perfect method for preparing the future risk. There is a phrase ‘Better safe than sorry’ which means prepare now not to be failing in the future. It could be true, but it does not make sense in that people cannot make preparation for the future perfectly. Therefore, I think it is impossible for human living without danger.

    1. Do you think our lives are too safe these days?

I think people’s lives cannot be safe, not even today. There are two reasons why our lives are in danger until now. First, risk is unsolved problem which is lurking in every place in every second. It is obvious that human society has been developed compared to the past. Modern people can overcome the danger that our ancestors couldn’t deal with. Diseases such as flu and food poisoning used to be a fatal health issue at that time, which are just a minor ailment today. However, we still have lots of dangers that we cannot handle. It might be solved in future as it is. But another problem will definitely appear. So, there is no way to get rid of risky situations.
Second, risk is the relative concept that cannot be justified. For example, cat can be lovely pet to someone while it can be phobic animal to the others. Everything or situation have a possibility to turn in to risk depends on how people accept about it. Also this fear can just pop up at any time. The thing that once adored can turn in to hate thing in a second. Justifying some thing as a safe thing is impossible in this context.
Thus, our lives are always in danger never too safe.

In my opinion it is impossible to live life without risk. Because, there are so many risky things all around us, for example car accident or natural disaster. Everything can be risky to us. Eventhough, we always prepare for the accident, it is hard for us to prevent everything. That is to say, we don’t know what will happen in future. However it could be possible to be safe when we do some kind of exercise with safe guard and safe equipment. Nevertheless, it is not possible for us to prevent unexpected accident which happens around us. If we know when we are danger, there would be no one who has been killed by natural disaster. Moreover, there are some unexpected danger such as murderer. Of course, we could be safe and live life without risk when we only live at home and do nothing but eating and sleeping. However nobody wants to live like this. So in conclusion, I don’t think that it is possible to live life without any risk.

I don’t agree that we live in a safe society. In the past, human beings were suffered from hunting, various epidemic and lack of food. In these days, we are not suffered from this kind of risk. Human beings solved most of these problems. For example, Human beings developed vaccine on epidemic and shortage of food through gene manipulation. Also, we divide area which people live and animal live.
Although we solve risks of past, modern society made new risk. For example, there are new disease like cancer and AIDS, transportation accident and suicide. Human beings just solved risks of past, not modern risk. We strive for solving modern risk.
Thus, I do not think we are live in safe society.

I do not agree that out society is too safe lately. Rather, it is full of risk and danger even in daily life. Especially in Korea, there was a big earth quake which striked Kyung-ju lately. Natural disaster is not something people can handle, but I think Korea is exposed to risk more than other countries like Japan. Also, these days the word ‘safety frigidity’; that people feel risk not much deal, which makes more vulnerable to such dangers. So, I think that people in our society are exposed to many dangers and risks, which is preventable if tried, but does not care much about it.

I think that our lives are not too safe. Even when we are walking on the street, someone suddenly might kill you. Actually, recently, there was a serious crime which someone kill a woman without reason in Gangnam, Seoul. All people were shocked because they think they would be the woman killed by someone. No one has been sure to be safe by accident. Like this attacker, people has suffering from mental diseases. I think the causes of mental diseases could be in society. In Korea, when doing anything such as making money, studying, etc people must compete with someone. Only if the one in competition can survive. it is too stressful for all people especially teenager. it has proved by the rate of suicide. That’s why I think living in these days too dangerous to live.

Do you think our lives are too safe these days?
In my opinion, It depends on each country.
of course, when comparing ancient time, we don’t need to attack or hunt animal.
However, many other risk have increased, such as war ,nuclear bomb, epidemics.
In Korea, compare to other country we are safer, but still have ceasefire.
other country are suffered a lot of wars. such as middle east and Africa.
furthermore, We still deal with natural disaster. It’s still hard to overcome.
In conclusion, I don’t think we are too safe.

    1. Do you think our lives are too safe these days?
No, I think our lives are not safe these days. There are a lot of dangers such as traffic accidents, conflagration, cruel crime and so on. Hidden danger is represented suddenly irrespective of a will so accidents can be easily occurred everywhere even daily life. People can be hurt seriously by unexpected accidents. Recently, ten people died because of a tourist bus accident. It seems that superintend of government is careless and safe fridgity is lack. Moreover, motiveless crime is getting serious and it threats safe of individuals. When Gangnam station murder was occurred, many people was afraid and scared. Thus, our lives does not safe and people live with a lot of danger.

I do not agree that we are living in a safe world.
I have seen a lot of news about accidents and diseases these days. Many people believe we are living in safe societies maybe because of high developed environment. Although we enjoy convenient lifestyle but we conversely get many dangers by errors of machines. In addition, we are seeing people who run security programs or systems and they find our personal information and use them for their own benefits. We are more exposed to dangerous environment
