CRW2 President Trump

November 9, 2016

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
― H.L. Mencken

Ten years ago, I saw a movie called Idiocracy. While the movie was just so-so, the premise of the movie was quite interesting and somewhat appropriate for today’s American election. The movie goes a little something like this:

The story revolves around Joe (a typically average name), who is just an average guy working in the military. Because of a mistake, he is transported 500 years into the future where intelligence has been bred out of humanity. You see, intelligent people think rationally about having children, so they typically postpone babies until they are emotionally and financially stable. Some intelligent people prefer to not have children for ethical reasons (e.g. overpopulation causes environmental degradation). Thus, only unintelligent people procreate, and some unintelligent people have far too many kids. After 500 years of this, humanity is left with a bunch of idiots; thus, society is not a democracy but an idiocracy.

They idiotic citizens voted for a president who best represents them – a former pro wrestler / gospel preacher / gun-loving / beer-drinking / party animal named Hector Macho Camacho. This is a clip of President Camacho. Notice the corporate sponsor logos everywhere.

After the election of Donald Trump, you will probably hear some Americans refer to this movie and President Camacho. It might be interesting research for those of you studying American culture.

WARNING: If you do not wish to hear bad language, please do not watch this clip.

Students: What does a President Trump mean to you, if anything? What repercussions do you think it will have for Korean-American relations?

The result of U.S president election was derived from a combination of populism and rebelling against the establishment. Reviewing the characteristics and election pledges so far by Donald Trump leads me to questions on if he is a responsible person to be a U.S president. He enjoys talking indecent jokes and saying openly discriminative comments about women and immigrants in public places. In addition, considering his election pledges about other countries including Korea, it seems apparently that he would put much burden on Korea in financial and national defense. He has commonly said that the burden of American forces stationed in Korea is unfair and Korea should share the burden. Plus, he suggests that American forces can be pullout from Korea. It truly increases military threats of neighboring countries. In addition, he committed to promote protective trade to increase U.S industries. If protective trade revived, then Korean companies should charge more taxes to export their products. It could also result in the tax increasing to average Koreans. Considering above, I think Trump’s winning can be a hard time for Korean.

“The result of U.S president election was derived from a combination of populism and rebelling against the establishment.”

I agree that the majority of Americans rebelled against elitist politicians who have abandoned them. A 2014 study by Gilens and Page illustrates how policies benefit mostly the wealthy and the powerful. I would add that the election results are also a rebellion against neoliberal economic policies that have hurt workers while greatly benefiting the 1%.

Usually we call President Trump as ‘Outsider’. It actually means that he is not original politician, rather he is more likely to be an entertainer or entrepreneur . He was born in Newyork, his father was rich enough so that he, Trump has no obstacle in his life with money. Indeed he has many real estates. However to me Trump is a person who really don’t know how to manage things properly and much worse, he don’t know much about the international situations. When I heard his election pledges, I though that he is doing a ‘closed-door policy’. He argues that he will ban all the refugees. Moreover he asserts that he will reduce money which related to national security, which is directly related to Korea. It means that he will withdraw US armed forces in Korea. It could affect many things to Korea, for example, we might get some serious danger with North Korea. Moreover, he says that he will reconsider the arrangement(FTA) with Korea. It will directly give shock to Korean industires. Ofcourse there migh be some good things to US and Korea, but still I don’t he is a good president.

“It means that he will withdraw US armed forces in Korea.”

Modern US presidents have much less power than in the past; there are many checks and balances to a president’s power. The Republican party apparatus will make sure that radical changes to military policy do not happen. Also, I would be surprised if there were major. albeit even minor, changes to international trade policies since both Republican and Democratic Parties favor ‘free’ trade.

I had thought Hillary would win the election because her ratings went up so much
and the US broadcasting showed us scenes of Trump who apologized his actions many times.
However, there are reasons that he could win the election.

First, There were many of hidden Trump’s votes.
The press made people who support Trump avoid to express their supports
as describing that Trump is too aggressive and vicious.
The progressive words ,also, is warmer than conservative words so we could
see that winning probability of Hillary is high than his’ on the surface.

Second, if i were an American, I would vote to Trump because of his promises.
I don’t know his promises will be actual, but compared to Korea, he said, he would make the strong Korea.
He will order the military to nip any northern provocation in the bud,
strictly deal with fighting against governmental authority, cater to a verylow class of people,
not accept illegal immigrants for national interest andso on. It will be best to the American.
Moreover, Promises in above are suitable for present the USA that needs to change
to something because of Brexit, and competition with China.
Furthermore, Email of Hillary had affected the election.

In his promise, Korea have many worries in connetion with FTA, the Army in Korea.
However, These are very important diplomatic tactics between Korea and the USA so it is not easy to change.
If defense spending is more high than now, it would affect little to our tax because of 1/n
Trump will not throw a huge blow to us.
I think It would rather reading one book than worrying ‘Who made our life better?’.
I don’t understand a man who attack the Trump in SNS, knowing not well politics.
Half of American support him. It’s not by chance that everything worked out.

“if i were an American, I would vote to Trump because of his promises.”

While I agree with you that his promises could help to improve the lives of many Americans, there is an important rule all voters should remember when choosing a politician: Don’t listen to what they say, look at what they do. I think many people worry about Trump because of what they know about his track record.

I think Trump’s election is the maximization of exclusiveness in democracy. Despite of his inappropriate speeches which include racial, gender, religious discrimination, Trump won the election by stimulating people’s anxiety for terrorism, economy and a strong sense of pride. I realized again that the threat of crisis can be led to a bad choice and human’s ‘the selfish gene’ is may be real. The campaign promises of President Trump are too extreme, so they are difficult to do realistically. Also they are uncertain and unpredictable. However, judging by his tendency, it can be the negative effects on Korean-American relations. First, the military alliance between the U.S. and Korea can be weakened and the issue of the American forces in Korea can be led the conflict from the military aspects. In addition, Trump’s protectionist policies for economy will seriously damage the Korean economy, because Korean economy has considerable dependence on export to the US. Worst of all, Korea’s domestic problems make it difficult for preparing appropriate response to the chaos caused by a President Trump.

  5. November 11, 2016 2:59 pm

I think inauguration of new America president Trump will have negative effect on Korea. Above all, it is expected to adversely affect economy. One of the main reasons why Trump has been supported by many people is America First he suggested. America First will result in protective trade which lays emphasis on native industry and market. Once America changes its market system, many nations around the world will follow such trend. This environment will be unpleasant for Korea which depends on export. Especially the manufacturing industry such as automobile and steel which are main industries of Korea will be expected to be restricted by protective trade. I am worried about this phenomenon will be actualized.

  6. November 12, 2016 10:35 am

President Trump will generalize discrimination. Before an election, People (especially white people) conceal their innate mind. However, a situation is changed. Even though there are many illegal immigrants, not everyone is. Trump show a strong attitude toward immigrants. It makes foreigners get a job. Students studying in the U.S.A. are embarrassed of that.
Trump’s election will have an effect to a relationship between Korea and U.S.A. The biggest influence is economy. Trump wants to enhance domestic manufacturing. Korea’s exportation rate is expected to decrease. It is caused by modification of a trade policy. Trump wants to maximize profit of trade and other things.

      “President Trump will generalize discrimination.”

Populists such as Trump often use racism as a strategy to distract citizens. One distraction is from the class war, which he and his other wealthy friends prefer average people not understand. It reminds me of a story I heard a few years ago.

There are three people sitting at a table: a powerful, wealthy person, a worker, and an immigrant. On the table are 20 cookies. The wealthy person takes 19 cookies and then turns to the worker and whispers, “I think the immigrant is trying to take your cookie.”

I hope Trump doesn’t try to embolden racists, but I expect some idiots will feel that his election will justify some racist comments and actions.

Trump is becoming the president in the U.S. To be honest, I feel that I am not entiled to claim the result of U.S president vote, because I’m not a U.S citizen. The reason why I refer this sentence is that people can not understand situation of others’ country. For example, I went study abroad in a year ago, I met some friends who are from Syria. And they told me that Islamic State(Military) are their last sovereign power to express their identity, because the U.S and Russia are trying to dominate their own country. And they had no choice but to oppose a resistance to the enemy who are the U.S or Russian. Before I heard their opinion, I suppose that Islamic State(Military) was the worst military in the world, because all media such as BBC,CNN even Korean News break the news to me Islamic State(Military) is the cruel armed groups. However, when I had a conversation with people who’s from Syria, somehow we are having a prejudice with limited resources through media.
In the case of Korea, our independence fighters were being treated terrorists to the world during the Japanesse occupation because of japanese media.
In conclusion, anyway. evem trump has lots of scandle about his personality and so on. He is elected president. Some specailists say that nationalism which is one of trumps’ powerful policy is played a determinant role in this election. Like this, I don’t know how much the U.S people are suffering from financial crisis because the U.S are helping other countries free. And the U.S people are paying lots of tax beacus of this. Maybe, it might be nice to see Trump getting elected, given the financial struggle that low-income bracket white people have had in the United States.

“all media such as BBC,CNN”…”we are having a prejudice with limited resources through media”

Yes, mainstream media companies have proven to be poor sources of quality, objective information. And companies such as CNN are really just advertising companies, which use sensationalist news stories to generate revenue.

“Maybe, it might be nice to see Trump getting elected, given the financial struggle that low-income bracket white people have had in the United States.”

Unfortunately, low-income white people will probably see their situation worsen. And after they realize that Trump’s promises are empty, unrest may follow. Already, Trump is filling his cabinet with Wall Street bankers, pro-business corporate lobbyists, and his kids: none of these people have demonstrated any concern for low-income people in the past.

The president elected Trump represents the diplomatic and cultural downfall of America globally. The U.S. has been a symbol of the West World, which is usually depicted as “logical”, “rational”, and “proliferation”. However, the U.S. has lost all of that images by electing Donald Trump as their commander-in-chief. Now the world clearly sees not to mention racism, but also white supremacy, which have been fueled by economic threats from China, India, and Russia. Americans, mostly white, are scared of being robbed of their assests(such as social status and class), which they robbed from Indians from the first place. These unreasonable and tacit outrages towards minors are the signs of a country going down.
The reason why there is so much difference between the poll results and the real election was that Trump supporters did not come out to their friends or families that they support him because they knew it will look dumb and racist and they know why they themselves are supporting him. Through the elction night, I made myself clear that I will never travel to America again since I do not know how much discrimination, or which crime I would experience, as an Asian.
The interesting thing is that the political situation in the U.S. is somewhat similar to that of South Korea in 2008. Korea was going through a serious economic crisis and people hoped that Lee Myung Bak, who once was a successful businessman, like Trump, would be able to save them from economic despair. Obviously, it turned out that president Lee was a very capable businessman, in that he earned millions and millions of money by scamming the people.
Americans are in economic crisis, Trump seems “honest” and capable, he lets “us white people” become white again. The future is yet to come but omens are clear as a hate crime is no longer a shame in America.

      “a successful businessman, like Trump”

Trump went bankrupt six times. This Fortune Magazine article says that Trump would be richer if he just invested in Index Funds instead of trying to do business. In other words, his business skills have made him poorer.

      http://fortune.com/2015/08/20/donald-trump-index-funds/

The articles on racism have some truth, but I think they overemphasize the issue. IMO, the Democratic Party is using the issue to distract people from their responsibility for the failed election. President Obama was elected twice, which won’t have been possible without support from white people. Elections are mostly about the state of the economy, but many people felt abandoned by the Democrats and their neoliberal policies. In fact, Obama was trying to pass a ‘free’ trade bill, the TPP, which would have hurt workers and greatly favored corporations, and thus the wealthy.

Also, the ruling class, including the media they own, use racism to distract citizens from the class war. Martin Luther King knew that the class war was important and was murdered just before he could begin the Poor People’s Campaign.

In my opinion, in the period of election, I thought Trump tended to look down on many disadvantaged groups such as women, ethnic minorities and the disabled. Also, he mainly focused on economic development in U.S.and wanted to change many economical policy such as FTA with Korea. He looked similar with our former president Lee. They both want to save country from economic despair. When president Lee was president, he achieved a high level of economic growth. There were some good things but I don’t think president Lee was not a good president.
Above these, when I watched that Trump was won the election, I was shocked and thought that there will happen many changes in Korea.

I predicted Hillary Clinton would win the election, because the graphic responses said that Clinton had a lead. And I wanted Clinton’s win more. However, Trump won the presidential election. I’ve read a lot of articles or tweeters that Trump’s win would bring various negative effects to Korea. And, I can’t say surely that I think it doesn’t. In my opinion, the election shows what white wants now. They want their rights back such as employment problems. If I were an American who is white, I think I have higher possibility to vote him in this election. Even though Trump attacked the non-white people and said he would build the wall between USA and Mexico during his election activity, he wouldn’t be able to do such things after being a president. I think what he said was not right as a president of the USA. But as being a President, he won’t commit immoral acts. Therefore, negative repercussions would not occur in Korean-American relations.

The Result of this election was unexpected for me. I think the president should protect their people who are especially the weak such as the disabled, the old, children, women and racial minorities. That is one of the important qualifications for the president. However, Trump doesn’t seem to be that kind of person when I listened to his speech and policies. The united state is a nation of immigrants. His ancestors also immigrated from Europe, but his attitude to other ethnic groups like the black race, Middle Easterner, and Asian is too hostile. Besides, Trump even is accused of sexual assault. So, the result is contradictory for me to understand. In addition, when it comes to the relation between Korea and America, it doesn’t seem to go well. As Trump mentioned in his speech, he doesn’t want to pay for US Armed Forces in Korea So, there will be some discords related to national security issues about North Korea between Korea and America. Also, the Korean economy is very dependent on America, so the US economy has a huge effect on the Korean economy. I think it will be hard for Korea to export in many different fields in particular manufacturing business by Trump’s new economic policies. Korea is not to be compared with the US, so Korea economy seems to fall down. I think he needs to have virtue, which is peaceful coexistence with others.

Today, Donald Trump was elected to the president of America. It was a hot issue to me and people all around the world. Even though I am not the citizen of America, I felt disappointed about this election. I don’t think he is a right person for the president. Without any doubt, Trump will cause discrimination and dissension to the world. Hatred of others is a trigger of every social problems and Trump is nourishing those feelings. He used to be business man not a politician. Trump may be a successful entrepreneur but politic is different thing. Politics is to maintain the social order by power received from the public. Trump cannot understand the others since he was trust-fund person for entire life. It doesn’t mean that Hillary should have be the one, but at least she is ready to use her power for people of her country.
Being as Korean the relationship between two countries is my main focus. They have been partner for decades, but it doesn’t seems positive from now on. Because Trump thinks America is over spending on Korea. He mentioned about raising the expense of defense. Also it seems like there will be less Us intervention in North Korea issues. All this commitments shows an ominous presentiment about relationship between Korea and America. However It’s no use crying over split milk and I hope situations in both countries to get better and to stabilized the function of the state.

I do not support both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. But I do not wanted Trump to be a president. He said lots of thoughtless words, words like a bluff and a personal affront. Without his bad personality, there are three reasons for my opposition to Trump. The first reason is that Trump is a racist. His policy aims white male supremacy and discriminating other ethnicity. According to his speech, he said he will banish poor migrants and make a wall at the border between the US and Mexico to prevent migration. Korean student who wants to go abroad for studying would suffer VISA issuing problem. The second reason for my opposition is that Trump is a misogynist. He loves woman`s sexuality but neglecting woman in other ways. He told breast-feeding is disgusting and belittle woman`s appearance. Moreover, he insulted Hillary with women disregarding words. It is interesting that many American women voted for Trump even though his reckless remarks. The third reason is that his policy can ruin Korean-American relationship. He insisted the withdrawal of US forces in Korea. This problem is very important for me as a Korean man. I have thought the US army is partially protecting Korea territory. I am not certain with the effect of withdrawal, but this can increase chances of attack from North Korea. Trump even said there is no reason to protect Korea! “Good luck!” If North Korea invades South Korea after the evacuation, Korean men including me may fight in the war. I have to carry guns and plunge under fire instead of studying in the class with books. The outbreak of war can create hostility to the US. Also, Trump tries to renegotiate FTA between Korea and America. Korea could be subordinated to the US by the offers which are advantageous for the US. Car industries and electronic device industries would damages with the renegotiation. Trumps policy can spoil sixty three years of friendship between the two nations. In these reasons, I do feel happy with Trump being elected.

I was very shocked at the result of the U.S. president election that Donald Trump won the competition. To be honest, I had never thought he could win the election. Considering his utterances and behaviors, Trump seems to be a racist, a white supremacist and a sexist. I think he is ineligible in moral standpoint for the U.S. president which is much more meaningful than the president of just one country. There will be many influences on Korean-American relations. First, Korea should cover the expense of the U.S. Force in Korea more than before. It is because Trump insists that Korea is protected by the U.S. Force for free, however, which is not true. Korea has paid much for the cost of the U.S. military. Nevertheless, it is inevitable to burden the expense of the U.S. Force in Korea much more than the past. In addition, Trump said America will not care about the conflict between South and North Korea. It can raise tensions on the Korean Peninsula. However, in my opinion, it is a good chance for Korea to achieve the capability of self-defense without other country’s interference. Moreover, there will be changes in economic aspects. It is possible that the Korea-U.S. FTA will be renegotiated at the request of the U.S. It could cause difficulties in exporting Korean product to the U.S. I wish Korea government copes with the huge upcoming changes.

  15. November 14, 2016 1:15 pm

In my opinion, president Trump will have a negative effect on US armed Forces in Korea. Trump emphasized ‘isolationism’ in his acceptance speech. It means that the US does not intervene in other nation unless they are related to their national security. Isolationism of Trump gives priority to protectionism to increase their economic profit and isolationism of national security minimizing military intervention. According to his speech, US armed Forces in Korea might me withdrawn or its cost will be increased. This is a diplomatical problem as well as financial problem. Therefore, I think the action of Korea is important than before. If Korea does not properly manage the relation with American, it may cause a decrease or withdrawal of US armed Forces. It will has a negative effect on Korean national security.

Trump is coward. As people are heard in advance, he hate woman, handicapped, sexual minorities and colored races. These are all the social weak. I think the leader of nation must protect the weak. It is his duty as a president. And this is the way to integrate all citizens. Thus, I think that he does not have ability to be the strongest country’s president.
We will have trouble with America in military and economy. Trump said that, he will not support military of Korea. It might cause war in Korea between North Korea. And, he wants to conclude FTA between Korean and America. The contract clauses in FTA is definitely profitable to America. It will aggravate Korea’s economy.

To begin with, I was very surprised at Trump winning on American president election. Because Although a lot of American people don’t think him as president, He was elected as president owing to vote system of American. As I saw his promises, i thought they are regarded as extreme egoism of American. That is his commitment such as banishing all Mexican immigrants, making a barrier to entry between American and Mexico, blocking Muslims who could bring about problems in America. I agree partly, but now they all American not strangers Because American is that All different kinds of people from many different places with different religions and cultures and identities in close proximity. The reason why People think America as the strongest country in the world that they have many kinds of people.
And, in terms of Korea-America relationship, there will be also changes in a number of areas. The most noticeably change thing would be military area. They assist raising cost of military. It could affect tax. So i think Korea should improve independent national defense capability.

The election results has lead to many controversial issues in the world. There has been lots of democracy to protest for his election. I have not expected his election as new leader for united states. Actually, although Hillary got the more volume of votes, she can’t be elected because of indirect election system. I’m not supporter both of them, Hillary and trump. However I prefer to hillary to trump.
First of all, he genaralizes discrimination and dissension. He used to said to look down minor groups such as women, ethnic minorities and disabled. The president is the leader of united states. This means he have to not only embrace most of americans but also try to be careful to listen to all of group’s opinions.
Also, he argue that american force has to be withdrawed from korea. If it happens, korea government have to put more budget military department. Actually, military budget is consit of lots of investment in korea. This means korean citizens will have more burden for taxes. Maybe not only this, trup election have influenced to the diplomacy between korea and USA. I hope his election have not influenced negative
