CRW 2 Unit 6 Environment

May 23, 2018

Today’s homework, due Monday, is to write a short description of a specific case study on an environmental problem. You might review the example paragraph on page 112 (paragraph 2) about drought in Kenya. Also, look at the example below, which is a description of case study A on page 116.
Note: You will be able to use the description of the case in which you are interested when you write the essay at the end of the unit.

Case Study A: Fire Risk
Southern Australia is susceptible to bush fires. The geography of the area is heavily forested, so there is an enormous amount of fuel for the blazes. The number and intensity of the destructive fires have escalated recently, but they are especially common during summer months. Experts blame the phenomenon on several factors including global warming, drought, and human activity. This, in turn, has resulted in the loss of commercial and residential buildings, animal habitats, and health problems from smoke pollution.

Japan is exposed to threat of Earthquakes. It is due to geographical location of Japan. Japan is located on the boundary lines of plates, where 4 plates including Eurasian, North American, Pacific and Philippine Plate meet. Although annually, the number of Earthquakes reported in Japan is random, as nobody can predict exact numbers. It could be said that it is very common every year. The intensity may vary from a minor earthquake that human can barely feel, to major which causes destruction of buildings and houses, and causalities. Japan has been putting a lot of effort on seismic design for mitigation but there are limits.

Case Study B: Damage from earthquakes
Haiti, an island in the Caribbean, is one of the most vulnerable areas to earthquakes. It is because Haiti is located near the boundaries of two Tectonic Plates, the Caribbean and the North American; their movement is the most representative factor that generates earthquakes. There are also other causes like lack of reinforced buildings and lack of infrastructure. The scale of the earthquakes are considerable. There were eight major earthquakes in the past 500 years: 12-02-1562, 02-12-1751, 06-03-1770, 05-07-1842, 01-12-2010 and so on. Consequently, they led to loss of life. Due to collapse of buildings including infrastructure, a lot of people died and people who luckily survived became homeless. The immunity of the residents became weakened as they couldn’t eat well, stay clean, and be treated. Many Haitians, in turn, suffered from epidemics and other disease. Cholera can be one example; numerous people died from it after they drank polluted water because Water Treatment Facilities were destroyed.

Haiti, an island in the Caribbean, was severely damaged from a terrible earthquake in 2010. The country has experienced eight major earthquakes in the past 500 years, which means that Haiti is not frequently suffered from earthquakes. Because of this condition, there was no sufficient preparation to cope with the influences of disaster. Moreover, Haiti has been one of the poorest countries in the world whose GDP ranks 138st, so the aftermath of the earthquake was devastating. The earthquake which was started from the movement of tectonic plates, caused lots of casualties and almost every part of the capital, Port-au-Prince, was destroyed including its government buildings, hospitals, and infrastructures. Due to the lack of reinforced buildings, infrastructures and aid systems, a large number of people became homeless and several diseases was spread.

Recently, Pohang has been a region which is vulnerable to the earthquake. Just for the last 30 years, there had been only 2 times of earthquake in Pohang for a year. While there were about 100 times in Pohang in last year. Many experts point out a geothermal power plant in Pohang for a main reason of this unprecedented disaster. However, there are still many factors which could deepen bad consequences, for example, absence of proper education, preparation plan, infrastructure and recognition of its seriousness. Accordingly, possibility for a loss of properties, residential buildings and even citizens’ lives has risen gradually.

Earthquake has emerged frequently in Japan. It happened eleven times in this year. The geographical position is the main cause of the disaster. Japan is located in Circum-Pacific belt and four plates collide with each other beneath this country. Because the earthquakes happen so often as a result of this collision, the government of Japan had no choice but to endeavor to mitigate the damage from this disaster. Therefore, travelers in Japan are often surprised when they see most of citizens evacuating calmly while earthquake is occuring. In addition to that, most of structures in this country have a tolerance to earthquake. Nevertheless, when earthquake happen, there exist still much damage. For instance, in 2011, as nuclear power plant exploded because of the earthquake, many people had to leave the city. So, government has constantly struggled to prevent this natural phenomenon.

The Maldives is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. However, this island is in danger of disappearing. First of all, the Maldives is group of islands in the Indian Ocean and average 1.5 metres above sea level. The main reason the Maldives is in danger of disappearing is the flooding. The potential cause of flooding is rising sea levels due to climate change. As the average temperature rises due to global warming, problems such as sea level rise have arisen and this has a great influence on the Maldives. The climate change is also economically fatal, especially since the Maldives is a popular tourist destination. Thus, the Maldives GDP ranking in the world is 166th and it can be regarded as one of the poorest countries. Above all, the potential effect is to completely lose the island, including homes of up to 320,000 people. Therefore, it can be serious problem in the near future not only for environment but also people who might lose their life.

Recently, there is an ecosystem disturbance in Korea due to the exotic species called Nutria, Bluegill. It is becoming an annoyance to destroy the ecosystem in the southern warm region, mainly in the Nakdong River. In Korea, there is no natural enemy, so it is not easy to prevent breeding. They eat marshy vegetation, so that a risk of seed distinction is possible. Also, Nutria is the main damage to farming.
Bluegill is a fish originated from North America. They eat small native fish and shrimp. Especially, they eat five times of their weight to live in summer. The harmful effects of carnivorous foreign fish on the Korean river ecosystem are significant. In conclusion, these ecosystem disturbing species harm human and indigenous creatures.

The Anyang Stream – located in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, Korea – was seriously contaminated from the 1960s to the late 1980s. As the 1960s was a time of rapid industrialization and urbanization, many buildings and apartments were built around Anyang Stream; additionally, the area near the stream was flat, so it was suitable for building construction.
Due to the concentration of population and increased number of factories, more and more domestic sewage and industrial waste water flowed into the stream, without being purified. The Anyang Stream began to be polluted. Fish, birds, and aquatic insects couldn’t live in the stream. It smelled terrible and the tap water was polluted with heavy metals, which caused people’s health problems. Thus, in 1980s, Anyang Stream was called the River of Death because it was a stream where no life could live.

Korea is not safe from earthquake anymore. Recently, major earthquakes at a level above 5 occured in Gyengju. Since the occurence of major earthquakes, inhabitants had to evacuate to somewhere else and many stuffs fell down in buildings. Therefore, countermeasures for earthquake should be prepared ranging from minor steps to major steps. First of all, government should educate citizens of preparation plan of earthquake. Also, government should do safety training regularly so that people can protect themselves when earthquake occurs. Secondly, officials in korea have to examine buildings whether they are earthquake-proof or not. Additionly, government should obligate owners of buildings to inspect safety facilities. Lastly, people should educate themselves of safety guide.

Recently, many earthquakes have occurred in Korea. In particular, there have been many large earthquakes since 2016. In the last three years, there have happened about five earthquakes with magnitude of 4.5 or more in Ulsan, Pohang and Gyeongju. Until just a few years ago, Koreans thought that Korea is safe from earthquakes. Thus, most Korean buildings are not earthquake-resistant. Also, students don’t participate seriously in earthquake drills at school. Because of them, Korea suffered a lot from earthquakes. Lots of things in the house were destroyed, many pillars of buildings were cracked and some buildings were collapsed. Also, asphalt roads cracked, cars were broken and water pipes were burst. Like this, many people were injured and even died because of earthquake. Therefore, Korea should prepare thoroughly in case of a big earthquake. Especially, there are nuclear power plants near Ulsan and Gyeongju so damage from earthquake will be able to be more critical. In conclusion, earthquake problem of Korea is more severe than people might think and it needs some preparations.

The worst flooding in three decades is scouring the arid landscape of coastal Peru. Exceptionally warm water in the Pacific Ocean is fueling heavy rain in western South America, which then comes pouring down out of the mountains. The extraordinary amount of water has overwhelmed surrounding towns. Significant amounts of rain have fallen over relatively short periods of time in some parts of the Andean country in the latest repetition of a local El Niño, a rise in sea temperatures that increases evaporation and brings about heavy rains. More than one hundred thousand homes were demolished, leaving approximately one hundred seventy thousand people homeless. Including 113 people killed by flooding, around one hundred million people have been affected. They lost their residents, properties, and family. All the infrastructures and schools are destroyed. There are shortages of food and water in many areas and prices have risen by 5% on average. Flooding also brings fatal diseases including dengue carried by mosquitoes.

Japan is suffering from earthquakes frequently, because the land is placed near the circum-pacific orogenic zone. the zone is a land that is made up from volcano eruption or the curust’s uplifit . Therfore magma is made in the basements and spurts out throught volcano,or make the land to shake frequently. The fierce shake of the land damae buildings or crack land surfaces, so many casuaties by the disaster can be produced. The most threating feature of an earthquake is that it can lead to other disasters like fires or tsunami.

    Case study C: Dust Storms
Representatively, Mauritania, North Africa which located in west of the Sahara Desert has exposed to the dust storms. The geography of the area is mainly desert. Wind, drought, farming practices, and deforestation are the potential causes for this situatuation. Dust Storms have approached to Mauritanua about two per year until early 1960s and has left lots of losses. For example, it effected to loss of fertile soil, poor visibility for transport, and health dangers such as breathing problems. The country needs to investigate how to solve the problems and reduce the lost.

Every May in northern India, ther is a dust storm or storm. But it is said that this is the first time the damange has been so great.
The main causes of this dust storm are desertification and harmful gas emissions. Especially, India imports large quantities of oil called cokes.
This is said to produce about 17 times more sulfur than coal. The dust storm left 278 people dead in about a month. And street lights and houses are damaged and collapsed.
In addition, more than 70 aircraft headed for Indira Gandhi Airport in New Delhi have been turned around and more than 100 have been delayed.

Recently, fine dust become an object of public concern in Korea, generally at spring season, so many of Korean suffer from it and wear a mask for it. Since it comes to the fore pastfor some time past, it attracts concern from people. It is more hazardous to bronchial tubes than yellow dust. It can cause bronchitis, lung cancer, and various kinds of cardiopulmonary disorder. From Chinese industrial park, dust cross the Yellow Sea with northwester downwind of Korea in the springtime. The sever problem is, there is no solution at the moment, people cannot help wearing their mask for it, but it is also less effective to prevent it.

Kilauea volcano is erupting lava and releasing hazardous gases on Hawaii’s Big Island. More than 1,700 people have to relocate their home due to the disaster. 18 fissures have now opened up as a result of the volcano eruption. The lava spilling from the eruptions has destroyed at least 26 homes and a number of other shelters around 387,500 square feet from the most active fissure. Furthermore, Kilauea’s eruption caused several small earthquakes and it made the situation worse. Kilauea is Hawaii’s most active volcano and has been continuously erupting since January 3, 1983. Because people are advised to stay away from the areas near Kilauea, the sale loss of tourism industry is also expected.

In Mexico, after a big earthquake in 1985, serve earthquake also occured.
In Mexico, natural disasters are frequent because Mexico is belong to the the circum-Pacific orogenic zone which has more than 80 percent of the world’s earthquakes.
The Pacific Rim is called the ” Ring of Fire ” because it is an circularity earthquake-shaped that connects Japan, Southeast Asian countries, and New Zealand to the Pacific Ocean’s islands, North America, Central America, and South America.
This is because Mexico City is a city formed on a lake with three tectonic plates meshed together and has a weak ground.

Japan is vulnerable at Earthquake because it is located at the intersection of three continental plates, the Eurasian, Pacific and Philippine Sea plates, which are slowly grinding against each other, building up enormous seismic pressure. It results huge damage such as loss of properties, death, destruction of buildings. Therefore, Japanese prepare for potential Earthquake by developing prediction system and constructing Earthquake resistance buildings. Also, they educate people to know how to reply when Earthquake happens
