Sports

November 5, 2014

Growing up, I spent a lot of time at sports. I wrestled and played ice hockey and badminton from elementary school to high school. Nowadays in the summer, I play golf daily. Sports have keep me in great physical shape and taught me many transferable life skills such as leadership, co-operation, patience, and so on. I have many happy memories from the events in which I participated.
One interesting sports-related story happened when I was in my early twenties. I was a Canadian PGA golf teacher from Prince Edward Island, Canada. The real Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and the third son of Queen Elizabeth II visited our island. One of his royal stops was at our golf club where I was asked to give him a short golf lesson. I was not nervous until he showed up…with a dozen security staff, roughly two dozen reporters and photographers, and a bunch of fans. He asked me a few questions. I hit a ball for him and then he hit a couple of balls. The whole event was a bit surreal.

Students: This week’s topic is sports. Please choose one of the following:
1. What is one benefit of sports?
2. What is one transferable life skill from sports?
3. Describe an interesting personal sports story.
4. Do sportsmen and women make good role models? Explain.
5. Do you agree with Korea hosting the Winter Olympics? Explain.
6. Are e-sports players really athletes?
7. Chun Doo Hwan had a 3s policy (Sex, Screen, Sports) to distract citizens from his anti-democratic policies. What is your opinion on this?
8. Your idea.

    7. Chun Doo Hwan had a 3s policy (Sex, Screen, Sports) to distract citizens from his anti-democratic policies. What is your opinion on this?

A 3s policy amused people and get them absorbed in entertainments. Even if the policy succeded temporaily to make citizens ignorant person, in the long term it was harm to whole society. Because of the policy, democracy didn’t developed in that periods and eventually defer democracy. However I think the policy was smart in the aspect of distracting citizens from anti-democratic policies. Because sports are very attractive things for men’s amusements. screen is atractive entertainment for women. And sex is instinct of human. So both men and women could be distracted easily. More importantly both three entertainments take times in common so they could took time from citizens not to be interested in anti-democracy policies. For these reasons I think the 3 policy had effect to achieving a purpose but delay democracy.

I’m not arguing with you but I couldn’t agree with your idea actually. It can attract people in another way but this couldn’t be the reason of delaying the democracy. The reason for delaying democracy is in the lack of knowledge in democratic world. For example Franch Revolution, citizens know well about the Russo’s idea. So they become revolutionary person to break the rules. Also We, who are living in 21 century, are living in sex, screen, sports world. Our screen is now enough to see the imaginary world because of development of graphic. And we are enough love sports that could see in increasing fans in sports. But our citizens try to get more democracy because they study a lot of democracy in their school, news. I think it is just lack of knowledge not because of 3s policy.

I agree with you, because I also thought that a 3s policy delayed the period of democracy. By Chun Doo Hawn promoting three fields that could most interrupt people’ reason, he could easily do whatever he wanted to control Korea. This kind of policy to paralyze citizens’ use of reason is often used by the government also in recent days. Nowadays, the government usually uses hot issues related to celebrities to pass the laws easily. The citizens should try to be awakened not to be blinded by the government.

    4. Do sportsmen and women make good role models? Explain.

Have you ever seen sportsmen or women in television? Most of famous athletes show their process of training or their dream of competition. I already saw some sportsmen or women’s story about their dreams, their process of training when I was young. Those kinds of story include to be hard for practice and to prepare for the future. Thus athletes can be good role models. The meaning of role model is someone whose behavior, attitudes people try to copy because they admire them. There are many sportsmen or women can make good role model. For example Yeon ah Kim who is most famous skater shows us that we should prepare for the future. When Yeon ah Kim’s first competition, She didn’t get any medals. But she didn’t give up just prepare for the future competition. In one interview she said when she became over 17 year old she will go Olympics and won the game. This teaches teenagers to prepare for the future. Also episode of Ji sung Park can teach teenagers to be practice hard. Ji sung Park’s foot is not enough to play soccer game. Because he has flat foot that can’t play game for a long time. But he tried as much as he can. So now he became one of the most powerful impressive soccer player in the world. Therefore athlete’s story can be good example for teenagers.

    6. Are e-sports players really athletes?

In my opinion e-sports have many similarities with sports but if compare them they are fundamentally different. Both of them have entertainment function, competition& cooperation function and also give pleasure and help people to relive stress. That’s why e-sports is included to sports. But these are just superficial similarity. E-sports and sports make similar psychological effect but in perspective of physical effect e-sports is contrast to sports. There are any physical movement in e-sport. It means there are no benefit from physical movement in e-sport like delight after sweating, improvement of physical health and body shape and liveliness. And from these things other benefits are made sequentially. On the contrary to sports in the long term e-sports make our physical health harm, also there can be a psychological problem like addiction of game. For these reasons e-sports cannot be sports and that’s why e-sports players aren’t athletes.

I don’t agree with some of your opinion. The argument “e-sports is not a sport because it has no intensively physical activity” can be criticized. For example, go(baduk), one of the most famous mental sport, is officially a sport. It only need a small hand-snap activity. Then why does a sport include the go? This is because a brain activity can be included in physical activity. E-sports also can be a sport because it is a mental sport.

    1. What is one benefit of sports?

Through sports, people can strengthen their physical ability. If a person strengthens enough his physical ability, there are a few additional effects. First, he can feel confident, because by the sports he is healthier than before. Next, his metabolism can be raised by playing sports. That is, when he has a fast metabolism, his body fat percentage decreases faster in comparison with prior time. Also the fast metabolism prevents various cancers such as lung cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer. This is because the fast metabolism makes his cell accept more oxygen and then more oxygen prevents deformation of the cell. Lastly, he can’t meet with unexpected accidents because of higher physical ability. In other words, the person who has lower physical ability than other people is easy to break his born due to osteoporosis. Thus, the sport is essential part of life to live healthily.

I totally agree with you. Playing any sports can give us a lot of health as much as possible. But before start performing it we want, we should have to know about our physical ability. In other words, we should play a sport properly, not too much. If you do physical activity suddenly or excessively, sports can be a poison.

I agree with you, especially with the opinion that metabolism can be raised by doing the sports. When I regularly went to the gym and exercised, I really felt healthy and woke up with fresh mood in the morning. However, in recent days, I don’t exercise anymore, so I easily feel tired and exhausted. Whether moving our body regularly decides our metabolism and strength.

    8. My idea.

I think there are big 4 benefits of sports. First thing is it is good at your health. If you play soccor, baseball or other sports, it heips improve our immune system so you can live more healthier. Next benefir is it helps you relieve your stress. When you have a lot of stress or worry, it will be really helpful to you to forget or get rid of those. Third one is it increases your muscle mass and improves flexibilty of your body. This will make your body line more wonderful. Last benefit is it affects their ability to socialise. Most sport games are played with many player. By playing with other players, you can learn sociality. This will make you more thoughtful, patient person than before. Like these it will help you by many ways so let’s enjoy sports!

    6. Are e-sports players really athletes?

E-sports is a highly controversial subject in sports category. Some sports fans tend to think e-sports is not a sport because e-sports athletes are usually not to use their body. Rod Breslau said on Twitter that “Esports not a sport. It’s a competition. Chess, checkers… competiton.” But, in my opinion, not only e-sports is a sport, but the athletes are a sportsman. There are three reasons – contestability, popularity, and the range of physical activity. First, both e-sports and a sport have to contend for victory in a tournament or a league. There are many big sponsors for the events because a huge number of fans in the world enjoy watching the competition. For example, League Of Legend World Championship (LOL WC) is one of the most famous e-sports event all over the world. The event is conducted as a tournament. And each team has its own sponsor supporting both the team and the event (or league). This system is very similar to football events’ such as EPL(English Premier league) and the Champions League. Another reason is that e-sports has enough popularity to be included a sport. In January 2014, the game had 27 million active daily players, 7.5 million concurrent players at peak times, and 67 million active monthly players. (The source: Purchese, Robert (28 January 2014). “LOL: 27 million people play it every day!”, Eurogamer. Gamer Network. Retrieved 28 January 2014.) Also, 40,000 world fans personally came together at LOL WC hosted in Sang-am Worldcup Stadium. Some people could criticize e-sports is too maniatic to enjoy all the people. But, for example, the baseball is not usually enjoyed in Europe, but it is a world sport. Finally, a brain activity is included in physical activities. Brain is a part of human body, and the e-sports athletes use the brain intensively. They have to make a strategy to bit against the enemy, and this activity as much harder as physical activity. Clearly, people should agree that it is obvious to have changed the concept of a sport slowly until now.

Yeah, I agree that the brain activity is also a physical activity. Some time ago I have heard that the brain activity such as learning consumes more calorie than physical activity like soccer.

    1. What is one benefit of sports?

I think the most valuable benefit of sports is releasing our stress and fatigue. There are so many cases that people reduce their stresses by sports. But in my case, I often watch baseball and soccer game on TV whenever I got a stress. While I concentrate on sports game, I forget my stress and was refreshed by it naturally. In others cases, they release their stresses by playing sports themselves. They have lots of moving while they are playing something and these moving makes them relieve fatigue. In conclusion, whether watching sports game or playing themselves, sports have a positive effect to our body and mind.

    5. Do you agree with Korea hosting the Winter Olympics? Explain.

In 2018, Pyeong Chang winter olympics will be held and many Koreans are excited about one of the biggest sports event which is held in Korea. However, some of people are worried about some predicted problems. First of all, excessive investment in Pyeong-chang adversely affect local finance. According to announcement, Pyeong-chang already go into debt about 600million won. Moreover, there will cost a lot to maintain after olympics. If there will be no proper manage to facilities, it would be nothing but unused equipment. Secondly, It destroys virgin forest just for 3 days ski olympic. Though there will be financial profit, It have more disadvantage than advantage. Because predicted rehabilitation expense is more than 200 million won. Actually Salzburg, in Austria reject olympic at council and they decided to invest public education system rather than held winter olympic. As a result. I think it cost a lot of disadvantage than financial profit. However there is no choice from now on. All we can do is constant interest to olympic. And I’m afraid it shall fail.

    7. Chun Doo Hwan had a 3s policy (Sex, Screen, Sports) to distract citizens from his anti-democratic policies. What is your opinion on this?

3S policies in Korea is known as the “exhaust” policy which turns people’s complaints about the government into elsewhere as a means of image turn. “3S” is the initials of the sports, sex and screen. In Korea, The fifth Republic government which is established through The 12•12 military revolt and 5•18 Gwangju campaign for democratization turn the attention of the people towards the sports and entertainment to neutralize the anti-government movement, or political and social issues raised. There are a lot of criticism because Chun Doo Hwan intent to continue his Republic government by making people unconcerned with important social problem. But I think that there are some kind of positive effects through this policies. As a result, some measures such as releasing a curfew improve the freedom of the people oppressed.
Furthermore, these liberalization measures are anticipated to promote political awareness and democratic movement in the long term.

    1. What is one benefit of sports?

Sports help to mix all sorts of people. Through sports, almost people can enjoy socializing with others. Why? Because sports don’t discriminate people and in sports rule, everyone is equal.Whatever personality, people strive for victory on the same team. In this process, man can learn about others and sympathy with others stuation. That is the reason why take exercise with others from an early age. In fact, many studies show that sports influence with the people character. We should exercise regularly in life.

1.What is one benefit of sports?

: There are several benefits of sports such as improving health, making one’s body looks better. But the most benefit of sports is promoting relieving stress. When someone do exercise, they focus on that time as slick as nothing at all. For this reason, people do not think about their own serious problems anymore. Moreover, they can feel excited when they win the game or have really good match. These are the reasons of why the sports make people promote relieving stress. In sum, if someone enjoys the sports, they can promote relieving stress more easily.

    8.
When I saw Chun Doo Hwan’s 3S policy, the thought of gladiator combat suddenly struck me. For me, it seems that 3S policy is quite similar to the policy of Roman politicians. Though it’s not clearly known the origin of the gladiator combat, there are two main theories: one is that it’s from the Etruria funeral custom and the other is that it’s from southern Italian province. The first combat was to commemorate their leaders, but as the scale gets bigger and bigger, the function of combat became not for the honor of the deceased but for enjoyment. Eventually, it degenerated into the event for politicians’ propaganda and the public also wanted to hold the fight. Moreover, the gladiator show affects seriously to public election which is not negligible for the famous leaders Julius Caesar and the first emperor Augustus. They also let numerous fighters and beasts for the public interest of themselves and Tiberius who didn’t held spectacle at once was very unpopular. I was very surprised after knowing sports are often used for isolating citizens from the politics and it’s extremely dangerous thing because too much attraction make lose people’s proper judgment. In sum, for being a monitor of politics, people should have sharp rationality for being awake despite the eye-blocking tricks.

I have one interesting personal story about sports. I was actually majored in Golf Industry, which belongs to the department of physical education college. However, I decided to change my major to here, Global Communication since I was in second term of first year in college. Honestly, I’ve never ever thought about going to college of physical education before I take university entry exam. I came there just because my grade was appropriate to register that college. Eventually I changed my major, however it was such a good experience to be at Gold Industry. I learned how to play golf, for the first time in life, and attend many sports play, such as baseball game and basketball game. I also met many friends who are sports players. Some of my friends are professional golfer. Indeed, it has been a good experience to be at there, though the subjects I studied was not suitable for me.

    5. Do you agree with Korea hosting the Winter Olympics?
Korea is planning to host the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2018. Some people support the event due to several advantages such as economic benefits or promoting Korea to foreigners all over the world. However, I disagree with Korea hosting the Winter Olympics because of these two reasons : environmental disruption and image damage because of insufficient preparation. First, in order to make a place for a skiing match, the preparatory committee of the Winter Olympics is destroying ‘Gariwang mountain’. In Gariwang mountain, there are a lot of rare creatures, so it were designated as the retention area and had been protected by Korea Forest Service for a long time. However, as Korea became the host of the Winter Olympics, the law that had protected Gariwang mountain became invalid. Then, the preparatory committee is cutting down a lot of trees of the mountain to produce wide space for the skiing match. Because of this horrible action, the precious mountain that should be protected is getting damaged. Another reason is the image damage of Korea due to insufficient preparation, A short time ago, the Incheon Asian Games was hosted in Korea and criticized a lot because of the lack of preparation. For example, the steering committee of the Incheon Asian Games produced the stale food to the volunteers or didn’t produce enough vehicles for players’ moving to participate in other games, so they got a lot of confusion. Far from promoting Korea as a great country, this event only damaged the image of Korea. Because of this, it is worried that the Winter Olympics may become the event of damaging the image of Korea. How can the Winter Olympics be the successful event in this system without the basic manner of being the host? In sum, the Winter Olympics is likely to become the terrible event due to these reasons, so it should be reexamined thoroughly.

    1. What is one benefit of sports?
Sports is benefit for people because of its attraction and charm. It means that it can many people focus on thing as people want that their nation or team win. For example, when Korea, Japan World Cup held in 2002, people came out the street and cheered their team themselves. Because when their team wins, cheering people feel relieved mental and body stress which have in work or school. Although their team is defeated, people feel healing by putting together with friends or family and cheering up just together. They also feel excited when they watch sport. In conclusion, sport has attraction from people.

    5. Do you agree with Korea hosting the Winter Olympics? Explain.

In my opinion, it is quite unreasonable for Korea to host the Winter Olympics in 2018. One of the reasons for the disagreement is that investing for the Winter Olympic is not economically beneficial in substance unlike what Korean government has expected. In fact, among many Olympic host nations, only LA had a surplus and the other countries came to take on a lot of dept. That is to say, in the case of Pyung Chang as well, it will bring unsatisfactory results just as several general host countries. Another reason is that the nature is destroyed in the process of constructing the facilities for the Olympics. So far, 500-year old forest has been destructed, decreasing the biological diversity. This is indeed a huge loss of Korea in the perspective of conservation of nature. In sum, while the purpose of the Olympic to encourage world citizen to enjoy sports is desirable, it is needed to make an effort to thoroughly consider various side effects of hosting as well as economical aspects.

I partially agree with you. Incheon Asian Game also brought a lot of financial and management problems. It is certain that this will happen in Pyungchang, too. However it is also true that holding some kind of international sport event is one way to show the power which country has. Also, with help of this affectional game, people over the world have attention to our country like we does. I think it’s good way to imprint Korea to others unless it doesn’t bring serious financial trouble.

Even though, they destroy the nature to build the facilities and make good detained Olympic, the results are not good enough to satisfying world citizens. Sports give many positive effects to people such as health, release stress, makes companion etc. I think one of the best effects to people is makes companion. Many people says Korean have lots of affection but actually our society makes, the affection is become low. However when sports such as Olympic or Worldcup opens, people become unites themselves and gives affection to others. 2002 Worldcup was the best example of this, they all have one mind and gives affection to others very well. Therefore I think this Winter Olympics gives people enthusiasm to give affection again. Although some sports are view-sports,people are really participate and cheer the sports and by cheering and participating, people become hold together during watch the sports.

    8 My idea
Sport and Physical Activity as part of a Healthy Lifestyle
A number of factors influence the way in which sport and physical activity impacts on health in different populations. Sport and physical activity in itself may not directly lead to benefits but, in combination with other factors, can promote healthy lifestyles. There is evidence to suggest that changes in the environment can have a significant impact on opportunities for participation and in addition, the conditions under which the activity is taking place can heavily impact on health outcomes. Elements that may be determinants on health include nutrition, intensity and type of physical activity, appropriate footwear and clothing, climate, injury, stress levels and sleeping patterns.
