A Letter from the Year 2025

May 12, 2014

This is a little writing exercise to stimulate your creativity and imagine the possibilities life can have for you. Imagine it is the year 2025 and you receive a letter from one of your former professors who is curious to know how you have been doing.

Dear former students,
It’s nice to contact you after all these years – 11 to be exact. I trust you are happy, healthy, and wealthy. How have you been? How has life treated you? What are you doing these days. Please write me a letter describing you and your situation. (Be as specific as possible, and preferably positive) Take care and I look forward to hearing from you soon. By the way, can you believe Psy is now president of Korea? Who would have thought!

Time flies! How are you professor? I am so fine! 10 years ago, I passed the exam of National Pension Service! And I have worked in this public institution for 10 years. Now I am the representative of this institution. And of course I got married my lover. We got married 5 years ago. We live in Gwa-cheon, Gyung-gi province. And I have one daughter and one son. They are still young. We are so happy because of them. I really satisfy with my life. And I have another dream. I want to be a public counselor for community people. I really miss you professor! How about meeting together at this Saturday? There is one fantastic and delicious restaurant near Yong-in where Kyung Hee University is located. I am looking forward to your reply letter. Have a nice day!

Good to hear. BTW, how are things at the National Pension Corp.? I hear the pension fund is slowly running out of money and will have to be reformed for long-term viability. Does this create any stress at work?

Oh, hi professor! Thank you so much for contacting me. Well, I have been doing great. I used to work for the IT company and I was in charge of customer services. However, after 8 years, I was thinking the life i had was not what I had thought. So, I made a big decision. I started my own business that is related to international trade. Fortunately, it has been very successful and I am making much more money than I used to. I married to a beautiful woman 6 years ago and I have 2 kids. They are adorable.

Oh ya, I have never thought Psy would be the president! haha I think it is awesome!
By the way, how have you been? Are you still teaching? I remember your class was one of my favorites! and the advices you gave me was precious! I want to say thank you again:>

We should meet sometime soon so that you can tell me about your life sir!
Again, thank you for contacting me! Bye!

    How have you been professor?
I’m sorry that I couldn’t keep in touch with you. I was so busy. These days, everything goes quite well. When I graduated from university, there were too many difficulties to me. Working all day long and no time to rest… Those things made me so tired. But as time goes by, now I’m adapted to my work. Of course there are still some psychos in my company, but it’s okay. I’ll be more like psycho than them so that I can overcome them.

However whenever I see students in their 20s on the street, I feel nostalgiac. Then, I didn’t know, now I know that studying is much more easier than working. And my parents force me to get married. I told them and persuaded them that I won’t get married. They still don’t understand me and force me to get married. I believe they will understand me oneday.

Everything goes quite well. I hope you are fine too. And I knew that Psy would be a president. Because I voted for him too!

Yes, every workplace has an ‘oddball’ or two. Successful workers can manage interactions with everyone well, so good luck with that. Also, I agree with your wise observation that students do not realize how much easier the life of a student is compared to the life of a worker.

Wow, it’s really really welcoming letter !!!!!
At the first time, I saw you letter just as spam mail, but It was not.
How awesome it is, how are you doing these days? are you still miss your hometown?

Wow, time filies so fast, It is already over 10 years! Now, I always miss that time when I was in university and kept writing bloody journal but at that time, I really didn’t know how it was happy and meaningful. Now I am in my hometown, I really like my life, everyday I just work about 6hours a day and read book and excercise regularly! Especially here is Jeon Ju where so many delicious restaurant is located so please visit here! I will introduce delicious restaurant.

Our country have hard times now. Some people call this time as another 1998 IMF. Futhermore, you know, Psy is elected by president. It is alarming reality but he is doing well. The north leader, Kim Jung eun really likes Psy so he pass Panmunjum(the border of South and North) in and out of season to see the Psy concert so our country will reunify soon.

Anyway, It is happy to see your letter and visit my hometown-!

‘Bloody’ journal! Sounds like an Irish expression. Wonder where you would have picked that up? BTW, it was cool to see Psy and Kim Jung Un do the ‘horsey’ dance together with American President Kim Kardashian. It seems American politics has really gone to the toilet. Good to speak with you again.

    Professor Todd!

    Great to hear from you!
I’m doing great. As soon as I graduated Kyunghee University, I went to graduate school(USC Annenberg) to study communication. It was a tough time but I really learned a lot and enjoyed the life in LA. I miss the weather there.

I’m currently working as an executive creative director in an ad agency in New York. I got married 5 years ago and have a son and a daughter. So hard to be a parent. Haha. I’m planning to have a vacation with my kids and go to Italy for a month. Hope it will be fun.

How are you these days? Thanks to the CRW class, I felt much comfortable in writing when I went to grad school. My friend Chad and I always used to talk about your big appearance and guessed maybe you were from the marines haha. I really miss those days.

Yes, I heard Psy is the new president in Korea. No surprise though, since the news that Eminem becoming president in the U.S. was a lot more shocking for me. I guess it’s the world of musicians.

Hope we can get in touch often and let me know whenever you come to New York! Thank you and take care!

Awesome. Great to hear. and yes, the weather is LA is amazing. I heard the most boring job is a weatherman in LA because they just repeat the same thing everyday…72 and sunny! BTW, the elite class in most countries have learned that the best way to control politics is to use a ‘figurehead celebrity’ as president, someone who acts as president but without any power. Sigh 😦

Wow. it’s been a long time since I saw you last.
Above all, I want to tell you good news. It is that now I work at KOICA. Do you know what it is? It is a government branch which helps developing countries. It brings grant-type aid so I really proud of myself. I hope that you think it is wonderful.

Also I got married wonderful person. He is thoughtful and loves our kids so much. Every weekend, we go for an outing to the mountains and parks. I really enjoy my life because I am satisfied with my job and family.

In 2014, I had many woes. At that time, I always thought like this. Can I get a good job? Can I meet good husband who cares about kids and family? I was afraid that I won’t make a go of it. However, I almost achieved everything that I wanted.

Oh, also I want to express my thanks to you because my english fluency gave me an opportunity to get a great job. Actually, I changed my major to English so I was not good at English at that time. However, through writing class I could improve my writing skills and they helped me out a lot. Once again, I would like to thank you.
I want to tell you specific story of my life so I will visit you soon! take care of yourself bye!

Things may seem difficult by times, but with effort and a little luck, things often turn out well. BTW, thanks for explaining what KOICA is. I thought it was a Japanese manufacturer of cameras 🙂

Hello~ Long time no see, professor. I’m so glad to contact with you. How have you been? I’m so surprised that I am already 32 years old. I miss my university campus life. However, now I’m so happy. I married my great husband. I’m pregnant now. My babies are twin, a son and a daughter. I’m so happy because of my babies and my families. These days, my life is fully filled with them. Originally, a goal of my life was to be a competent career woman but it is changing. I hope to be a great wife and mother. I love my husband and my babies. I think we should meet once or more. I wonder your story and I need your advice about the career after my first delivery. Until now, I think I’m a student for you. I miss you!!

Already 32? Wow! Once I became 39, I stopped getting older. In fact, I had my 39th birthday again last month. Congratulations on having a wonderful family. My career advice would be to try to balance family and work. Therefore, keep one foot in the door at work and the other at home if possible. If you give up your career completely when you have children, it is often very difficult to re-enter the workforce, especially as an older woman. My older brother’s wife is a pathologist. She was lucky to have two children and work 2-3 days/week at the hospital.
Glad to hear form you again.

Let me start my letter by telling my current situation. Nowadays, I am working as a project manager of public relation department in SK. My job is preparing all the events from A to Z, and all the events are for promoting our company’s positive brand image. Sometimes work is too tough because there are so many things that I have to consider, but after the event finish, I feel so happy and worthwhile. Next time, I will invite you to come and join some events.
Oh! I got married 6 years ago, and I have two kids. My daughter is 4 years old, and my son is 1 year old. They are so cute and lovely. I attached some pictures of them, so open the files!
Whenever I am lost in memories of my university period, I often miss your CRW class. After attending your class, I got a confidence to write something in English, also I got a habit some journals in English every two weeks.

Hi! Thank you for your letter and sorry for making you send me it first. I should have sent letter first.
So, how have you been so far? I have been great. I came back to Korea a couple of years ago. I have been to many countries including Ireland to work and to travel after graduation. In 2016, I got a job in international trading company and learned a lot. Now I am operating export agent in Korea. I am also thinking about headhunting job. I got married 6 years ago and I have a boy and 2 girls. Fortunately, girls take after her mother. How about you and your family? I remember your little girl was so cute. Now she must be beautiful.
I did not realize that college life was so interesting comapred to job life. At that time, I just wanted to get a job as soon as possible and wanted to make money early. But now I realize school things were precious time in my life. I wish I could go back and took your class again. I bet I can do better. I want to meet you and have a dinner. One of my friend is running a fancy restaurant so that I want to treat you big supper. So let’s make a plan.

    Dear Professor

Hello, professor. How have you been? I can’t be happier to get a letter from you. It seems like it was not long ago when I suffered from the assignments you gave me, but it was, wow, 11 years ago. How time flies! I hope you are as health as you were when you gave us a great lecture every day. I have been good, trying to make my life more adventurous. Do you remember when we talked the last time on the graduation day? Soon after the graduation, I entered the big company which I told you about with passion of youth like others, but sadly It wasn’t a satisfactory life as I expected it would be. After 3 years I quit it and had a little time only for myself to figure out what I really wanted to do traveling and learning various things. A year later, during the Swamp of World Economy Crisis I came to get a chance to join the second national project of social welfare for 2 years, which was very successful. I still consider it as one of the worthiest works in my life. Right after the work I got married. Having a long term break I enjoyed the marriage, had kids and then started to write a book, which I had been desired for a long time. I still can’t believe that I am called a writer, and also i am really embarrassed to get good reviews, but I love so much to share my life and ideas with words in various ways. So, here I am so happy with my family, and satisfied with this job and my life. I am going to keep doing my best for my life to give you good news.
I am sending you two of my books with this letter. I know they aren’t perfect works but I hope you like them and feel proud of your student. I always appreciate keenly what you gave to my life.

    Thank you.

At the 11 years ago, I dreamed to be a great speaker so I had tried to make my own stories and praticed to speak in front of audiences. After a semester when I met you, finally I entered a congremerate as a HRD consultant. That time was really meaned to me because I took a first step to best presenter. In the company, I invented to my own programs to develop employee’s abilities and instructed. Afterward, I bulid my own company to make about people’s vision in 2020. For now, I’m instructing to many people in every corner of the land, and recently I began to teach to other countries. I couldn’t speak English before, but now it is easy by your teaching.
Maybe you want to meet me and me too, but I have a plenty of works. But as you know, I published a book 3 months ago, and you can find it easily because it is now a best seller in Amazon. Hello professor! How have you been?
It’s been 11 years since I took your class, but sometimes I still miss that time. Well, to tell some my story, I didn’t graduated right away, but chose to rest 1 more year. During that period, I tried to find what I want to do. Maybe that period was the hardest time in my life so far. I traveled around, met many people, but it was not easy to find it. But I couldn’t find what I’ve looking for. I realized that it would take a whole life to really know what I want to do.
After a long long wandering, first I chose to go to a graduate school to study more. I was interested in philosophy and history, so I studied about them more in Britain. In Britain, I really enjoyed my life. I studied hard, drank a lot of beer, listened tons of great music. After dream-like period of study ended, I came back to Korea and started to teach in University. Guess where it is! Yes I started to teach some English history in Kyung Hee!
Oh, another news is that I’m running a small cafe! Please stop by and have some coffee if you have a time. When I don’t have any lecture, I stay in cafe, read some books and listen to music.
One more thing, Almost forgot to tell that I got married 2 years ago and having 1 daughter. Maybe I can get some advice to raise daughter from you! Since 11 years have passed, fortunately I’m living a really happy life with my family. I hope you do too. Also, I’d like to keep in contact with you. I’ll make a contact soon.

    Dear. Professor Todd Mcgowan.
Oh! I can’t express the delight of getting your mail in words. How have you been, professor? Are you still lecturing in Kyung-Hee University? I really wonder how you have fared during last ten years. Ten years! It was ten years before when I took your class at first. Now I have a blurred memory about the time, but I can remember both that I was very poor at English at that time and that your lecture was so interesting and encouraging!
Um.. To tell you about my last ten years, now I am working at KOCCA, Korea Creative Contents Agency. I wished to work at here from sophomore, but it was tough time to achieve my goal. I was fascinated to cultural study at that time. However, as you know, in Korea, the area for humanities was decreasing day by day, and there was little chance to study on culture. So with the graduation ahead, I was agonizing about whether I would just get a job regardless my dream or I would study more abroad for my dream. I think you may have remembered that I had visited you to get advice about my trouble. I decided to seek my wish.
I was terribly lazy person, so it was the hardest thing to change my bad habit. After being more industrious than before, I wrote and erased hundreds time to complete just one academic paper to submit France Cultural Heritage Administration for getting scholarship, and I achieved it! Looking back on it now, still it was very thankful and wonderful event. Thanks to this chance to study on culture, I’ve been in Paris for 3 years, and when I turned to 29 years old, I met my husband in the library. Nowadays, I am very happy. I like my job and my married life although both of them are a little different from my imagination. I am endeavoring to make humanities revival in Korea and actually I am pregnant now. ^^!
I really miss you, professor. I want to meet you soon. Please tell me your last ten years on reply. I will be waiting for answer. I appreciate you that you contacted me before. Thank you. I wish you are always healthy and happy.

    Sincerely, Go Eun-Bi.

For the past 11 years, I worked at publishing company in Korea, then I went to U.S to study a journalism more. My parents really got mad that I leave my country and delay my marriage again, but my boyfriend really like that because he had to stay in here too for business trip. He is a great help of me. I remember that I took your writing class in Kyung-Hee University. I always hope that I could learn English better, but speaking and writing in English is so hard as always. Honestly, I’m really tired to follow class in here, but I’m really happy that I’m doing what I want. I hope to see you in here. Take a lunch with me and please give me your advices as professor. What a great surprise. It has passed for a long time, almost 10 years! So, how you have been? I’m curious whether you still teach students in Kyung hee university or not. Maybe, I could not graduate my college if there was no your amiable teach! Thanks to your CRW class, I could get a high score on TOFLE test. Very thanks again!
You know, what do I do now? You must be very curious.. haha Now I’m working at KOICA. In there, I am responsible for operating diversified projects on the subject of ‘multiculturalism and tolerance’ and ‘the 21st century International cooperation and multicultural society’. Advertising activity lists and work camps are also my job. In retrospect, I couldn’t do well on English. But now, as I can speak English fluently, I am able to deal with the concerning problems which I have to solve. Sincerely, thanks your lessons.
As to Psy, I’d like to mention something. Now Korea is completely mad! How I could imagine psy will be the president of Korea ten years ago? Is he have some special capacity except for making popular song? He is just figurehead celebrity. But, the public is entertaining this oddity situation. I don’t know how to change this social tendency. Anyway, I think you can come up with some ideas for crisis of Korea. Pleas, contact me again via email. I want to listen your opinion!

Long time no see, professor. How are you? I’m good. Even I recently got married and have lived in happy days. And I’ve worked for a trading company for five years. In this company, one of the most difficult things is to flatter boss at the office. I always thought that pursuing a career is not an easy job to do in a bigger society than university society. Also the other of hard things is too much drinking by participating in a frequent dining together.

Professor, recently living in the Earth makes me be nervous because of much earthquake. In this year, the earthquake had stroke more than ten-times in our country. As well as in the Korea, All the countries in the world are running into danger. Because of this reason, many scientists finished a research about living in the Venus. So, my family has a plan to move on the Venus. Also, in the summer, we couldn’t help turning on an air-conditioner as a result of global warming. Where are the people who boasted to make the ‘new renewable energy’ in the past? They still have not invented an effective energy as a substitute of the oil. Consequently, many companies are taking a failure in an efficiency of work because workers are commuting by walking or riding a bike. Unlike the past, nowadays we couldn’t get the oil which already was exhausted.

I don’t have a long time to live in the Venus so I’m so excited. Before becoming serious in the Earth, professor had better that you runs away in this planet as fast as. Keep your fingers crossed. Good bye, professor.

(P.S. when is most convenient for you? I want to meet you as soon as!)

How have you been? It’s so glad to write this letter to you. My age is amazingly 34 right now. When I first met you I was 23. Time flies by. I’m really sorry for you because this letter was little bit late. I was extremely busy because I was pregnant. haha. While I was pregant, I was exhausted and have serious morning sickness. I could not do anything during the time. Finally I had a girl on April the 3rd. It’s really cute! I felt some strange pleasant feeling that I’ve never experienced before. Being a mom is a pretty sacred thing which I can not change with anything in my life.
After the pregnant, I went back to my job. I’m working as an announcer in SBS. Recently I got a afternoon news so I began to study and practice really hard for the news. Everything goes properly. These days young announcers begin to come in the announcer department. I feel little bit tension about the younger announcers. So I started a diet and fitness. haha.
How about you professor? How do all your 3 kids do? Tell me! I will wait for your response! Be careful about daily temperature range! I think we could see soon with our kids. Bye!

    Sincerely omg

    Dear, Conor.

Oh, long time no see!! How have you been?
I am so happy to have a change to write a letter to you. When I was in my last year of Kyung Hee University, I took your class. Do you remember? When we met first, I worried about you. Since most of students told me before selecting class that you used to give us lots of homework at class. However it was not true. Your homework made me strong in field of English.
Anyway, what are you doing nowadays? Are you still teaching at University or did you found another place to work? I am working at one of the public companies so called KAC. The amount of annual salary is not enough though, I could work until 2050. Oh, big new is here. I god married with beautiful girl and have 2 kids. Both of them are in elementary school. Please check attachment. It is my family picture. When you see it, smile might be getting bigger. Your lovely daughter might become middle school student. Am I right? Please say hello to her and your wife too.
It is so glad to contact with you again and hope someday I would like to introduce my family to you and your family. Let’s meet together and have fun! Have a nice day. I miss you.

    Sincerely yours,

    Dear professor

Hi, Professor Todd! Long time no see. I’m fine, thank you. I work in English language academy. I teach children in academies. I somehow manages to keep life on the salary. My salary is not enough to let me live as I wanted, but teaching is a very rewarding job for me, I think. In fact, 11 years ago, I did not know what I really want to do, so I wanted to stay in the university forever. But, I should find my way, so I decided to teach English to students to put my major. I settle for my job, especially attendance time. I can attend the office afternoon, not morning. Because students come after school! And, I cannot find my husband….T_T Still, I live with my parents. But I have new family, sister-in-law and nephew, after my brother’s marriage. I like them, and I want to live like them.

How about you? I really want to see you. Bye.

    Dear,

It’s been a long time, sir.
recently my third daughter got a birth!
Although I’m getting high salary at work, It is not easy to make a living with my 4 members-family. But I got promotion last month so that I’m really happy with it. My first daughter entered elementary school this year. I’d never expected that there are so many things to prepare to the admission. My wife is busy for it. Ah, we have dual income, she also works. So, I’m trying to help household chores in these days. I’m doing provision for the future as I’m reaching 40. After retirement I’m planning to move to a suburb of Seoul. Now, Seoul is too loud for me. Did I say too many things? Anyway, thanks for lettering. I want to see you ASAP. Please keep in happiness.

    Dear professor

Long time no see. I am really sorry about that I did not contact you for last years. Honestly I really want to contact you but I could not. Because at that time, my career position was not settled down and I had went through very though days, so I do not want to make you worry about my situations. Luckily, those situations were relieved well, so these days I am spending very happy days in Spain. I emigrated to Barcelona 2 year ago with my husband. We got married Korea in 2035 and lived there for 4years. And we decided the emigration to the Spain because of our baby. Before we had moved to Barcelona I was in a fashion company as a MD and a consultant. I feel proud myself because in there, I was quite a professional person who receives lots of compliments from my co-workers and from my boss. Even though I quit my job with my marriage, I do not regret my decision. When our life in Spain became stable and my child became adults I will start again to work. Not for money but for my personal achievement. Anyway, I miss you a lot. If you have any chance to come Spain, please contact me without any hesitation. We will treat you as our family. I promise. I want to hear about your life these days. I look forward to your e-mail.

    Best wishes.

    Dear professor,

OMG!! I cannot believe that I receive your mail! Long time no see, Todd! How have you been? I’m so glad to contact with you. First, I’m so sorry and I want to ask for you forgiveness because I have not kept in touch with you. I have lived a very busy life. Now, I became a buying merchandiser in the SINSEGAE international. As you know, it was a my dream that I longed for a long time. Finally, I became and I am so happy. Nowadays, I have a lot of appointments in other countries. So I travel to many countries on business. Especially, I want to recommend you to visit Italy! Italy has not only gorgeous scenery but also delicious food. I am thoroughly fascinated in Italy. Oh, I also married. But I don’t have a baby yet. I and my husband are so busy, so we think that having a baby later is better.

I cannot believe that North Korea and South Korea finally achieve peaceful reunification. Furthermore, Psy is the president of the United Korea! Could you imagine the United Korea and Psy who will be the president of the United Korea? I think the United Korea will be the best international country because Psy is the president.

Now, I am going to make a plan for next business trip. It seems really hard but I’m happy with my job. I’m so proud of myself. I also hope you enjoy your life because life is too short and time flies too fast. I really want to meet you, Todd. I promise to visit Kyunghee University soon and meet you. Till then, I wish you the best of luck in your life.

    Sincerely yours, jay

Hi, professor! Long time no touch. I apologize that I didn’t keep in touch with you.
I should have contacted with you but by way of excuse, my life was frenetic.

    How have you been recently?
Can you believe that I’m already 32 years old?
    I can’t believe it! Actually it’s amazing!
I always wanted to be in my thirties when I was lectured by you.
At that time, my life was quite mess and everything was uncertain like teenagers.
But now, I’m quite proud of myself. I could finish graduate school master course successfully, and I’m already the top person in my career.
Of course, there’s lot of worries about some kind of things and it was not quite level road to live. To be honest, sometimes, I considered to give up every goals of mine. However I kept struggling to be success and it is sweet to gain achievement after pain.

For some years ahead, there’s tremendous pains I think.
But I won’t give up. This kind of courage was taught by you, professor Conor.
Thank you for everything and I won’t forget that your kindness when you gave me at my
    painful time.

    Dear former professor,

It is also nice to talk to you – like you said, it has been 11 years. It is said that time flies, but it felt like I’m exception from that sentence when I was 20. As you trust, I’m happier, healthier, and wealthier than ever before. I got married my beloved man and we have one child. My husband always had a dream about living in New Zealand raising sheep. Thus, we are now planning on moving to NZ. I know it won’t happen tomorrow or the next week, but we are just planning. Happiness, health, and wealth. I was hesitant which one to put before another. But through 11 years, now I feel like I have a clue. Health is the most important – so I try to exercise every single day at least for 30 minutes. As I am healthy, I don’t need to worry about possible diseases I could have, and for that reason, I’m grateful and happy about all the things I’m owning including my lovely family. Wealth is important in nowadays, but it just comes after happiness. (I think this ways) It can be means for happiness or other values, but it shouldn’t be the objective itself. With these beliefs, I can say I’m happier than anyone. And wow! I know, I know… I voted for him but it is such a fairy tale. But I can say that Psy is one of the best president EVER. He knows how to live a life and that’s what counts the most. So… I’m more than okay now! How was your past 11 years? Are you still in Korea?

    Dear professor,

Hello! It has been so long to see you. During 11 years, so many things are changed, isn’t it?
Just after graduated, I worked in a small company about one and a half years. It was terribly hard time I have ever experienced, so I quit that job. At first, I planed to prepare for a civil service exam after long travel to Europe. However a friend of mine suggested a movie distributing company because one of my favorite hobby is watching movie. So I applied and fortunately entered it. Work was hard and I had to work night overtime a lot, but I liked that. I treated numerous nice movies and sometimes had opportunities to meet movie stars from Korea and also from Hollywood. I leaved the area 1 year ago and now I am preparing to immigrate to New Zealand. Please wish my success!
